Year 9
Interesting Article of the Week
Next week, Yr 9 students will receive an interactive presentation from the organisation DARTA regarding alcohol and parties (see more information below). The article I have attached today is about alcohol drinking and teenagers. It is from the organisation ReachOut, which is Australia’s leading online mental health organisation for young people and their parents. This website helps parents understand some of the issues surrounding teenagers and alcohol, the harm it does, and the role of parents in reducing the harm of alcohol in their teenager.
DARTA
On Monday 17 June, Yr 9 students will have an hour and a half workshop which focuses on alcohol, with an emphasis on the ‘positive norms’ or how many young people choose not to drink alcohol. Discussions will be had around how there are no safe places to be drunk and all environments entail a degree of risk. Conversations will take place about developing rules around alcohol and teenage parties that may reduce associated risks.
Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Evening
It was wonderful to see so many parents at the Yr 9 into Yr 10 information evening. Remember that subject selection choices have to be in by 27 June. Please encourage your children to choose subjects that they are interested in.
Arnhem Land Immersion Opportunity
In the April school holidays next year, students from our Year Group have the opportunity to live with and learn from the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. This is an incredible experience that allows students to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of our land, Aboriginal culture, and self. All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening on Monday 24 June at 6.15pm in the Roseby Library. Any questions should be directed to Simon Colyer.
Gala Arts
Further congratulations to the following students who participated in Gala Arts:
Kyle Banfield, Louise Colin, Mia Kloiser-Jones, Harry Knight, Ashley Manovel and Callum Warden-Browne.
Pastoral Care and Social Awareness Programs
This week students completed a survey in preparation for DARTA visiting on Monday.
Excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum
Yr 9 attended an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum this week and heard a confronting and powerful account from a holocaust survivor. Katina Casimaty delighted the survivor by thanking her in her native Czech language.
