Let Your Light Shine on Education

Thank you to our community who have supported this year’s Scholarship Appeal. We are currently at 30% of our target to raise funds for one Means-Tested Scholarship.

Students are Leading the Way

Our Yr 12 students are already behind the cause, volunteering to help organise activities to inspire student participation in reaching this objective, including a challenge to our Alumni to join them in contributing to this Fund and creating their own Class Legacy Gifts.

We are working in collaboration with our Yr 12 Legacy Gift team: Nicholas Armstrong, Zoe Kimber, Ela Kos Lindsay McNeil, Constantinos Tsinonis and Alec Vigneault, pictured at top. This week we have finalised a few exciting fundraising events including a Movie Night, a 3 on 3 Futsal competition and a Beard Growing competition (Yr 12 only). More information to come soon.

Wellbeing Parent Information Session

Supporting your child to manage the ups and downs of friendship can be challenging at times. As part of our ongoing focus on wellbeing and our commitment to partnering with families, Dean of Students (P-6) Mrs Samantha Kourakis, has planned an information session focusing on the five core social and emotional competencies that support children to develop positive relationships and sustain self-confidence, independence and resilience.

This session will also provide the opportunity to update families in regard to the ‘Positive Behaviour Support for Learning’ approach that the School has been implementing on the Junior Campus this year. A film that was produced in partnership with students demonstrating our behavioural expectations will be presented at this time.

The parent information session will take place in the Arnold Library, Junior School, on Thursday 20 June at 8.30-9.30am. Please use this link to register your attendance. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Preparatory Clubs Term 3

Prep will once again be using the Trybooking system to organise the registration of Clubs for Term 3. Clubs are run by teachers on Wednesday afternoons from 3.00–4.00pm for Yrs 1 and 2 students only. An additional offering this Semester of a morning club beginning at 7.30am will also be available. Designed to be an hour of fun activity, Clubs provide children with an opportunity to mix with students in a new group, made up of both Year Groups. If you would like your child to take part in the Clubs program next term, for which there is no additional cost, please refer to the letter being emailed to families on Monday 17 June. The letter outlines when the Trybooking system will be available for you to make bookings and the Club choices on offer. Clubs will commence in Week 2 (Wednesday 31 July) and will finish in Week 9 (Wednesday 18 September).

Environmental Action at Redlands

Mufti Day Friday 28 June

Throughout Term 2, the Student Representative Council (Yrs 3-6) has been focusing on environmentally friendly strategies to help Redlands become eco-friendlier. In an effort to help our Australian community, students have come up with the idea of raising funds for farmers experiencing the detrimental effects of drought. To help raise awareness for Australian farmers, the Student Representative Council will be hosting a mufti day on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28 June. Students from Preschool to Yr 6 are invited to dress in earthy colours and to bring a gold coin donation for farmers in need. All funds will be donated to Rural Aid Australia. Rural Aid Australia strives to provide support to farmers and rural communities in times of need.

The Student Representative Council is also in the midst of planning projects to reduce single-use plastic items and to help reduce waste at our school. Please be on the lookout for upcoming waste wise initiatives. Thank you for your support.

Yr 2 Strings Performance

We are delighted to invite Yr 2 parents to Dunnet Hall on Monday 24 June for the end of term Strings concert. This performance will provide an opportunity for the students to showcase their learning this term. It will commence at 2.25pm and will run for approximately 15 minutes. All parents of Yr 2 students are invited to celebrate in their child’s achievement in Strings thus far. A reminder that there is no parking permitted on the school side of Allister St from 2.30pm onwards.

Library Book Returns

All Lucy Hill Library books are due back soon. There will be no children’s borrowing after this time; however, parents are welcome to borrow for the holiday period especially if you are still intending to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Adventure to the Aquarium

Yellow Class Seniors adventured to the Sea Life Aquarium this week to extend on some project work that began last term. They were lucky to have a hands-on tour with one of the aquarium staff as well as free time to explore, observe, admire, question and learn. The dugong was definitely a highlight and they have already begun investigating some of the follow-up questions. Their curiosity for the penguins and sharks blossomed and they couldn’t help but be in awe as the large Grey Nurse and Stingrays swam above them. The children should be admired for their behaviour, sense of responsibility and conduct on the excursion. They were naturally inquisitive, polite and followed the instructions of their teachers and the aquarium staff. Following on from this, staff used photographs to foster some reflective thinking and the Seniors were then asked to represent their favourite part of the excursion through visual representations and verbal descriptions. Thank you to our parent volunteers who assisted us on the day and made this excursion possible.

Independent Thinkers

At Redlands, one of our major objectives is to encourage children to be critical, independent thinkers. Children are naturally curious and therefore the educators’ role is to introduce them to different more effective ways of thinking. The staff support the children to focus on critical thinking, and problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Staff develop these skills by assisting the children to make connections between new ideas and their own experiences, building on their prior knowledge, identifying children’s current understandings and addressing any misconceptions. Staff engage the children in real-life problem solving, encouraging them to describe and verbalise their thoughts to co-construct meaning, challenge ideas and viewpoints. Families can assist in developing these thinking dispositions by:

  • Helping children make connections between new ideas and their own experiences.
  • Engaging children in solving problems and talking about what you are thinking.
  • Asking children to describe their thinking and expose them to a variety of viewpoints.
Illness

As the cooler weather of winter approaches, and we come into cold and flu season, we encourage you to please keep your child(ren) at home if they are unwell. This prevents the spread of infection amongst the children and staff. If your child is absent, please let us know.

Foundation Day

Last week Redlands celebrated Heritage Week and the traditional Foundation Day Service was held on the Friday. As this annual internal School event was my last Foundation Day and I was invited to be the Guest Speaker this year, I thought that parents might like to read my musings about why it is important that we celebrate the history of this remarkable School.

Foundation Day

Friday 7 June 2019

This year, we are celebrating 135 years since the School’s co-founders, Miss Elizabeth Liggins and Miss Clara Arnold opened our School on 12 July 1884. Within 15 years, the School had outgrown its original site at Milson’s Point and, after some deliberation, the Principals bought ‘Redlands’, a large house on Military Road set on four acres of land. So, it was 120 years ago that these two adventurous women opened the doors of their relocated school in September 1899, renaming their school Redlands, after the house and property they had bought.

Why do we, as a nation, and as a School, also remember our past history each year at ANZAC Day? The landings at Gallipoli were poorly planned, they were a military disaster that resulted in the deaths of a many Australians for no tangible outcome. Yet there is no sign of ANZAC Day fading from our national memory: quite the contrary.

So, why do we take time each year to celebrate our Redlands history and heritage in the first week of June, and conclude the week with a special Foundation Day Assembly? Why does the past matter? Is the history of Redlands just a past that really has no great meaning or importance for us today?

I believe that this annual remembrance of our School’s heritage and history helps us to feel connection with the place where our staff come to work and continue to learn, and where you, our students, come to learn, to play and to make friends. It helps us to understand the journey that other students and staff before us have had, and to appreciate and be thankful for the vision and determination of those who have been leaders of our School. Redlands started as a school that was ahead of its time and it has continued to be a school that moves with the times rather than being locked into preserving the past.

Moving the School to another suburb 15 years after its foundation proved to be a well-considered risk. The move must initially have caused the two founding Principals some anxiety; student numbers initially dropped when the School relocated to Military Road. However, Ms Liggins and Ms Arnold had rightly predicted that the tramline that ran outside the front gates of the new site would transport students from the growing suburbs of Mosman, Cremorne and the Northern Beaches in one direction, and from the lower North Shore in the other. They also trusted that the School’s already excellent reputation would attract new students. The two Heads also foresaw that the new site would enable them to provide on-site boarding facilities for country students, and perhaps even more significantly, offered space for games and sport to be introduced. That is why we had a luncheon at RSYC last term to celebrate 120 Years of Sport at Redlands and why we invited four Redlander Olympians to speak to the guests.

Their well-considered risk paid off, and we can thank Miss Liggins and Miss Arnold for their vision and courageous conviction. The sports program of today has morphed over the years to become a major part of Redlands’ offering.

The founding Heads of Redlands had a vision that girls should become equals with men and should be prepared and entitled to have a no lesser education than boys. As a result, Redlands girls were some of those who were the first women to graduate from the University of Sydney and who then embarked upon careers in leadership and professions similar to their brothers. The educational vision of those founding Heads also included their recognition of the importance of the early years of schooling for young children.

In the mid-1970s the School was threatened with closure and was saved by parents who valued a Redlands education, some of whom made heroic personal efforts to allow the School to continue. The Redlands community rallied behind those who led the battle to keep the School open.

The era which followed in the following decades did not merely maintain the status quo. Soon after, the School’s leaders made the decision to make Redlands a coeducational school. At that time all the other long-established independent schools on the lower North Shore were steadfast in their view that single-sex schooling provided a superior education for girls and boys. This view reflected the history of secondary schools, in particular, in the UK during the 19th Century and carried on well into the 20th century.

In 1989 another milestone was reached. 30 years ago the first Redlands Seniors sat their International Baccalaureate examinations. The introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma had been another adventurous decision. For, at that time, there was no existing evidence to measure its likelihood of success in an Australian context. However, like the original founding Heads decision to relocate their school, this was also a thoughtfully calculated risk, led by then Headmaster Mr Peter Cornish, aided by research overseas by his Deputy, Mr Christopher Brangwin, and then supported by the Board. At times our current IB students bemoan how hard they have to work, but they might spare a thought for those early IB candidates who studied both HSC and IB courses in their senior years and then those who sat their IB examinations had to stay on until May, as there were then no southern hemisphere IB Diploma examinations.

I myself have learned to understand and appreciate the history of Redlands and of the achievements of those who led the making of that history. It has certainly made me feel connected to and proud of this School, which I have been privileged to lead over the past 12 years.

I hope that all of you will continue to appreciate how the school of today has evolved from its beginnings to become the school it is. And I trust that your knowledge of Redlands’ history will continue to grow and assist you to feel connected to those who built this School and those who continued to nurture and develop it for its students.

Dr Peter Lennox

A Peek Inside the Classroom… Visual Arts

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over this term, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I will write about my Visual Arts lesson.

Today I had the great pleasure of visiting Mr Harpley’s Yr 12IB Visual Arts lesson. Students were busily working on their Major Works for their exhibition towards the end of Term 3. It was wonderful to walk around and hear of their various themes and the different ways they were exploring these themes in their pieces. I was struck by their thoughtfulness and experimentation and cannot wait to see how their works take shape over the coming months. Thank you Mr Harpley and Yr12IB students for this peek inside your classroom!

EduTech

Last Thursday and Friday, I attended EduTech, the largest educational event in the Asia-Pacific and Southern hemisphere. The conference brings together the entire education and training sector to learn, debate, exchange ideas and be inspired by the very latest in educational thought leadership. While there were many ‘take-aways’ I will be sharing with individuals and teams back here at School, one of the highlights was hearing from Sir Ken Robinson (an internationally recognised authority in creativity and innovation in both education and business, who has written best-selling books and has some of the most viewed TED Talks) who spoke about The Creative Advantage and the future of education. He reminded us that children have boundless potential and it is the responsibility of schools and school systems to enhance their creative thinking, love of learning and innovation – not to constrain these attributes. He also challenged us to develop and articulate a clearer vision for education which moves beyond output or ‘yield’ (ie – test results) and will enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and the talents within them so they can become fulfilled individuals and active, compassionate citizens. Not only was his talk inspiring but it was also affirming as many of the principles he espoused are also ones we are trying to cultivate here at Redlands.

Theatre Success

On Tuesday evening, Yr 11 IB Theatre students Greta Feldman, Aleisha Lawrence and Domenica Stuart represented the School at the Regional competition of the Shakespeare Festival. They performed against other teams from the area and in a great result, finished in first place! Congratulations and good luck in the next round.

Alumni News

We are very proud of our graduates and their many and varied accomplishments after they leave Redlands. It has been a great pleasure speaking to various students from last year’s graduating class as they have returned to campus to share with us their post-school journeys. Over the past few months, a number of students have gained acceptances to overseas universities and, currently, 21 students from the Class of 2018 will be attending universities in the USA, Canada, UK, Switzerland and Japan – continuing to increase Redlands’ international footprint.

We would like to make special mention of Stella Everett, who has recently confirmed she will be accepting a place at the prestigious Julliard School in New York – one of the most acclaimed performing arts schools in the world. This year 1,961 students from around the world applied for their Acting Program and Stella is only one of 18 students (and the only Australian) to be offered a place in next year’s class – an amazing accomplishment. We wish Stella every success on the next stage of her journey in New York.

Paul Dillon Parent Talk: Tuesday 18 June 6:00-7:30

On Tuesday, 18 June, Redlands is pleased to welcome back Mr Paul Dillon to speak to our parent community. Paul has been working in the area of drug and alcohol education for the past 25 years and presents to many schools and community organisations in the Sydney area.

Paul will be delivering a parent presentation on the evening of Thursday 18 June free of charge to all parents and carers from 6.00 – 7.30pm in Redlands Hall. This year, Paul will be presenting on the topic entitled, Teenagers, Alcohol & Other Drugs 2019: What’s happening, what’s out there and how much influence do parents really have?.

Using the most recent data available, this talk will examine the use of alcohol and other drugs by school-based young people. It will have a particular focus on the changes in patterns of alcohol use that have occurred in recent years, as well as any particular concerning trends around illicit drug use. There will be a close examination of the positive influence that parents can have on their child’s drinking behaviour, as well as the barriers that they may face during adolescence. It aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest family discussions in this complex area.

This session will be covering material aimed at parents and carers and it is not appropriate for students to attend. As Paul’s sessions are always highly relevant, informative and practically based, we strongly encourage all interested parents to attend as we continue to work in partnership in developing our students’ wellbeing.

Pink Sock Round

On Saturday 15 June, Redlands will again be hosting a Pink Sock round in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Redlands has a proud association with BCNA and we look forward to raising funds in support of its mission again in 2019. This year we encourage the School community to purchase pink socks from the Uniform Shop for $15.00 in support of this charity. All spectators and coaches are encouraged to wear a pink item (or several) on the day to demonstrate support. The Uniform Shop also has pink Redlands hats and t-shirts to purchase for $15.00 and $20.00 respectively.

On this day we have arranged for a large number of our winter sports teams in Rugby, Football and Hockey to play at our home venue, Macquarie University. Throughout the day, there will be a bake sale and a BBQ with all proceeds going towards the charity. We will also have an Alumni tent and other fundraising activities. The BBQ and bake sale will cater for all students and post-match functions for 1sts teams. Netball teams will also be selling pink baked goods at their home venue, NBISC, on the day.

In order to make this a successful day, we would appreciate any assistance from parent volunteers across our community. Some of the ways that our community can get involved include:

  • Providing items required for the bake stand (doughnuts, muffins, cupcakes, slices, cookies)
  • Collecting donations on the day
  • BBQ assistants (minimum of 2 volunteers for each hour shift from 7am-12pm)

Chaplain

Redlands encourages students to make connections in their learning across curriculum areas. Yr 9 attended an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum on Tuesday,  a joint excursion between Christian Studies and History, Students were privileged to hear a testimony of a holocaust survivor. This was both confronting and moving as they shared their positive and victorious outlook on life even though they had survived the worst that humanity could offer. It was delightful to have a student, Katina Casimaty, who has Czechoslovakian heritage, thank the survivor in Czech.

The students also participated in a seminar examining different aspects of the Holocaust and history. They touched on topics such as Propaganda and the participation of so many people in the “final solution to the Jewish question”.

Students also explored the exhibits in the Museum.

This is the fourth time I have attended and each time I am newly impacted by the honesty of the guides and the complexity of the issues that the recounts and artefacts stir. Students are often shocked to learn that it was not just a few people who humiliated, violated and murdered Jewish men, women and children. People from all walks of life volunteered and actively engaged in this, proudly posing for photos. This leads to valuable discussion about what causes an everyday educated person to descend to such violence. Students identified the impact of repeated lies, de-humanising the other, the fallen nature of humankind and mob mentality. This also leads the students to reflect on their own lives. They are encouraged to think about how discriminating they are to messages in the media. They think about the acts of isolation and humiliation of others that might happen online in social networks. Students also built empathy and a sense of justice, while reflecting on forgiveness.

Yr 9 students have been learning about Judaism in Christian Studies and so this excursion helped them understand the practice of Judaism today as well. As we debrief over the next few weeks, I am confident that students will look back on this excursion as an important contribution to their understanding of the world.

Yr 10 Redlands School Sleep Out

Yr 10 have made a wonderful start to their gathering sponsorship for their Redlands School Sleepout coming up at the end of this term. We will be hearing from guest speakers representing Taldumande and Orange Sky Laundry about the services they provide to young people at times of crisis or people living rough on the streets. Students have been encouraged to seek sponsorship for this event so that we can make a financial contribution to these organisation. Thank you to the many contributors so far and the supportive feedback has also been very much appreciated. If you would like to support Yr 10 students and these organisations, you can use the following links to make a contribution.

Matthew Talbot Winter Donations Appeal – Socks Undies and Toiletries

We are still seeking donations for this annual appeal. The Redlands community has consistently made a very valuable contribution to Matthew Talbot Hostel for homeless men in Woolloomooloo. Please consider making a small contribution of socks, underwear or toiletries. These can be dropped off at the Secondary School Office, brought into school by students during Tutor lessons or to the Staffroom in the Liggins building. This will mean that the Hostel has a good supply of these items for the coming months.

Travelling Overseas in the Holidays?

Please keep in mind that if you are travelling during the holidays and have an opportunity to pick up toiletries from the airline or hotels, we can pass these on to the Matthew Talbot Hostel as well.

Matthew Talbot

The Matthew Talbot Hostel provides accommodation and specialised support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The service aims to provide immediate support and accommodation for people at the time of crisis as well as facilitate access to other essential services and more permanent housing. These services range from provision of nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical to intensive case management, legal and housing support, specialised health care, advocacy and providing a safe, welcoming environment for people who are sleeping rough and have experienced trauma. The Hostel employs a multi-disciplinary team, allowing for a coordinated and client centred approach to care and support. Many thanks to our Yr 10 families who have already generously donated to our Matthew Talbot sock drive. In addition, thank you for supporting the $25 donation for our Winter Sleepout. Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

Next week, Yr 9 students will receive an interactive presentation from the organisation DARTA regarding alcohol and parties (see more information below). The article I have attached today is about alcohol drinking and teenagers. It is from the organisation ReachOut, which is Australia’s leading online mental health organisation for young people and their parents. This website helps parents understand some of the issues surrounding teenagers and alcohol, the harm it does, and the role of parents in reducing the harm of alcohol in their teenager.

DARTA

On Monday 17 June, Yr 9 students will have an hour and a half workshop which focuses on alcohol, with an emphasis on the ‘positive norms’ or how many young people choose not to drink alcohol. Discussions will be had around how there are no safe places to be drunk and all environments entail a degree of risk. Conversations will take place about developing rules around alcohol and teenage parties that may reduce associated risks.

Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Evening

It was wonderful to see so many parents at the Yr 9 into Yr 10 information evening. Remember that subject selection choices have to be in by 27 June. Please encourage your children to choose subjects that they are interested in.

Arnhem Land Immersion Opportunity

In the April school holidays next year, students from our Year Group have the opportunity to live with and learn from the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. This is an incredible experience that allows students to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of our land, Aboriginal culture, and self. All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening on Monday 24 June at 6.15pm in the Roseby Library. Any questions should be directed to Simon Colyer.

The relationship between social media, alcohol use and parental monitoring in adolescence

Wednesday 19 June at 12pm, Presented by: Ms Anna Smout

This webinar is for parents, school staff, and anyone else seeking information about the relationship between social media use and drinking, and how parents can protect against alcohol use in adolescence.

Australian teenagers spend more than three hours per day on social networking sites. Greater time spent using these sites has been linked to problem drinking in adolescence. This webinar will present information on the relationship between using social networking sites and problem drinking, and will focus on how parents can intervene to protect their child from alcohol-related harms.

This Week

We were very appreciative for the special presentation to our Yr 7 cohort last week by Marguerite Gillezeau, Redlands Archivist, on the history of Redlands.  Students were intrigued to know how the school started, how few male students were first part of the school and many other fantastic Redlands trivia questions and answers. Several students commented on what they had learned between the special Yr 7 presentation on Thursday and the whole school assembly on Friday. Heritage Week is a special celebration to commemorate our School’s birthday and to remember the many reasons we have pride in our school and in being a Redlander.

Congratulations to our fantastic Yr 7 finalists who submitted a photograph in the Gala Arts Visual Arts photo competition with the theme of Light: Sierra Allen, Aaron Beder, Zara Clement, Miles Eden, Emma Sullivan, Alex Tanner and Daisy Thomas.

Today the following students attended the NSWCIS Cross Country Championships: Isaac Brooks, Hamish Campbell, Liam McFarlene, Charlie Parker, Daisy Thomas and Sofia Thorne. More details to follow.

Are you every wondering what might happen in a Yr 7 Science classroom? This week, we have additional photos included showing several Yr 7 scientists working on the distillation of ink. Students were able to test practical skills and improve their cooperation due to the complexity of this experiment. Students also needed to assess the risks of boiling water, steam and using hot equipment.

Completed annually, the Redlands Behaviour Awareness Survey (BAS) allows students to express their opinions about the school environment, endorse positive contributions from students and identify any undesirable behaviours that are not aligned with the values of Redlands. Results will be shared with the Senior Campus Counsellor and Year Advisors but students who report information will remain anonymous. The BAS for Yr 7 2019 will be completed Tuesday Week 8 during Pastoral Care time.

Term 2 Pastoral Care: Hitting Our Stride

Students are continuing to focus on refining their habits, study skills and other tools for success by revisiting many ideas introduced to them in Term 1 and adding a few new ones to their repertoire. The Yr 7 Pastoral Program has been designed to include strategies and ideas from: Burn Bright Program, Pru Salter’s Study Skills, 7 Habits of  Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey and feedback from our wonderful Yr 7 cohort.  A snapshot of our program each week includes:

Monday – Chapel
Tuesday – Tools for Success and Assessment Support
Wednesday – Student-Led Tutorial Sessions
Thursday – Year Meeting
Friday – Community Days and Peer Support

Head of Junior School

For a long time now, Redlands has had a fascination with cultivating students who are inquisitive and curious. It is commonly thought that curiosity is an essential element for learning and recent research confirms this. Research by Gruber, Gelman & Ranganath reveals the power of curiosity for learning in the moment and its benefits to learning in other contexts as reported by Jackie Gerstein of User Generated Education:

First, as expected, when people were highly curious to find out the answer to a question, they were better at learning that information. More surprising, however, was that once their curiosity was aroused, they showed better learning of entirely unrelated information that they encountered but were not necessarily curious about. Third, when curiosity motivated learning, there was increased activity in the hippocampus, a brain region that is important for forming new memories.

So, curiosity drives us to learn, enhances our ability to learn even unrelated content and allows us to form long lasting memories. This reminds me of an idea I read in 21 lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari. “Questions you cannot answer are usually far better for you than answers you cannot question”. In 2016 the Oxford Dictionary declared post-truth as the word of the year. In such times, dispositions of curiosity and inquisitiveness seem to be essential survival skills.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2019

For over 30 years International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa.

ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

ICAS provides an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/region. The student report is also useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in the skills and processes in the ICAS they participate in.

Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:

  • High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants
  • Distinction to the next 10% of entrants
  • Credit to the next 25% of entrants
  • Merit to the next 10% of entrants
  • Participation to all other participating students.

A UNSW medal is awarded when the highest score in each year level in each state is judged to be sufficiently meritorious. Students must sit the official sitting dates to be eligible for a UNSW medal.

For more information please visit the UNSW Global website www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au

At Redlands, the Junior School students sit these tests by choice. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required.

Changes This Year

The Assessments

ICAS assessments have moved to online this year, with the exception of writing for Yrs 3 and 4, which will remain paper based. Students in Yrs 4, 5 and 6 will complete the assessments using their own iPads; the school will supply iPads to any Yr 3 students sitting the tests

Timing

All assessments will occur within a three weekly period in September (see table below).

Ordering and Parent Billing

Parents will directly access the UNSW Global website to order the assessments for their child and to pay online. All orders and payments need to be completed by 31 July. No orders or payments will be taken after this date. All tests will cost $14.50.

Currently we are awaiting login details for orders and payments. This information will be published next week in Note Day. The information for 2019 is as follows:

See it.. to be it!

Role modelling in today’s society is a vital tool to inspire young people to aim high and obtain their goals. Both in sport and other parts of life, role models provide a tangible and relatable example of what values and attributes are required in order to achieve your goals. For our students to believe it, they need to see it! Last week I was delighted to see the achievement of Ash Barty winning the French Open. It is these sorts of role models and the attitudes and behaviours they espouse which we need to share and hold up high for our young people to see and emulate. It is the daily habits and behaviours of our lives that lead to our success. From the way we interact with people, manage commitment, deal with victory and persevere through loss we will determine our success. Ash Barty’s approach to these ideals is a shining example for young people to see, hear and aspire to.

Redlands@Home Charity Round – Pink Sock Round, Saturday 15 June

We look forward to your support at the upcoming charity sports round, where we will be supporting the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. At Macquarie Sporting Fields, our Rugby teams will be taking on Blue Mountains Grammar in a must win match for all grades to secure their sport in the Finals. Our Boys Football teams will come up against one the strongest schools in the competition in the form of St Patrick’s College. With some close score lines in our previous meeting, the Redlands Boys Football teams will be looking to get one back against Pats. Particularly our First XI who narrowly lost 0-1 from a penalty in their last match. Our Girls Football teams will be looking to continue their dominance in the competition against Chevalier. All of our Girls Football teams are at the top of the table and are looking to keep it that way as they lead into the finals series. Our Hockey teams will also come up against Chevalier in what will be a tough match as they face off against the school sitting at the top of the table. Our Hockey team have proven themselves worthy of competing in the top division in the ISA competition and are looking to go one better this weekend against a strong Chev team.

It should be a fantastic day filled with school spirit and sporting passion. We would appreciate any assistance on the day and in particular, cake donations.

Athletics

Athletics training will start again on Friday 14 June, with all events (including Jumps and Throws) taking place. For those students wishing to attend this training, please register with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department.

This training is a great chance to learn and practice specific techniques in the lead up to the Secondary School Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 25 June (Term 2, Week 9).

Congratulations to Tom Latchford (Yr 12) who participated in the Balmoral Burn.  Tom ran a blistering time of 1.46 to take out the Humpty’s Race.

Rugby

With the winter school holidays fast approaching, we can look to these next two rounds as a way for all of our teams to continue their push into the top four and qualify for the ISA Semi Finals. Currently all of our sides are strongly in the mix for the finals which, from a programs perspective is such a positive. Having been able to see all sides play this season it is so encouraging to see the level of commitment for many of our boys especially with their defensive efforts.

For our Under 13s these next two weeks give them a chance of moving as high as tied 2nd/3rd overall on the ladder which will be a great spot to be in before the holiday break. Their last game against Oxley was a brilliant team effort with all players having a hand in the win.

Our Under 14s see themselves locked currently into 4th on the ladder, with the bye this weekend this group can look ahead to their tough fixture against a rejuvenated Scots All Saints side who have been steadily improving all season. Our 14s come off the back of a brilliant second half effort against Oxley.

With our 1st XV season starting to become more controlled, these next two weeks should be a chance to really flex our attack, with our backline really stepping up against Oxley last week although undermanned. There will be movement between positions across the next two weeks, hitting the mid-point of the season, we can begin to further flesh out our starting 1st XV, bench rotation and our game plan as we lead into the holidays and the final push towards the Semi Finals.

This weekend being our Charity Round, I encourage all parents, students and supporters to get into the spirit and paint our side lines pink in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia. This is a wonderful initiative by the school and one that, when combined with such a social sport such as Rugby, can build a wonderful atmosphere for all involved. Photos of 2018’s Pink Sock round.

Surfing

Last week, we had four surfers compete in the Sydney Schools North Regional Surfing Titles. Asher McBride, Ethan Noes and Hugh Sellar competed in the U16 titles on Wednesday morning. Despite less than ideal conditions, all three surfers had some great runs, with Ethan Noes managing to finish top two in his heat and progressing onto the second heat. Flynn Henry was our only competitor on Thursday for the U19s, coming up against some very strong surfers. Flynn finished in 3rd position in his heat, and despite not making it through to the next round, it was a great effort against some of NSW’s top young surfers.

Waterpolo

Congratulations to our Boys Open A and our Girls Open A teams who have made it through to the NSSWPA Semi Finals which take place this Friday night at the Warringah Aquatic Centre. Our Boys take on St Augustine’s A team who have been the form team in the competition, whilst the Girls will be taking on the Brigidine B team. The Girls have had some close matches against Brigidine this season so Friday night will be no different.

Girls looking to make a head start on their skills for Term 3 are welcome to join the Friday morning skills sessions before school on the Oval.

Netball

Stella Simpson-Morgan, Mischa Fabig and Ava Mills all recently competed at the NSWCIS Netball Championships for the HICES team. The HICES Girls had their highest finish in recent times tying for second after the preliminary rounds. Ava Mills was selected into the possibles and probables selection game, but narrowly missed out on the NSWCIS team. The girls played extremely well, made a big contribution to the HICES success and had a great time meeting the NSW Swifts, who were patrons at the tournament. Pictured at top.

Redlands Netball teams return to the court this week, with some minor adjustments to draws after the NSNA regrade. Very few of our teams are affected and any changes will be communicated to teams directly via email as soon as they are available from NSNA. The NSNA website is also an excellent source of up to the minute information.

Hockey

Our Hockey girls matches have been rescheduled and both remaining matches this term will now be at 8.00am at Mollie Dive Field, Pymble Ladies College

NSWCIS Cross Country

Best of luck to Jeffrey and Daniel Benoliel, Landon Mansell and Krishna Gupta who will be running at NSWCIS Cross Country representing HICES as this edition is released. I look forward to bringing news of their achievements at this high level next week.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.
