I read an interesting article by Greek Olympic track athlete and filmmaker Alexi Pappas. She spoke compellingly about the “Rule of Thirds’ as guiding principles she learned during her journey to the Olympics. The concept, introduced to her by her coach, is simple but powerful; in any ambitious pursuit, you’ll feel good about a third of the time, okay another third and the last third will be difficult. This rule is especially relevant for young students as they progress through high school and prepare for their futures, as it reframes how they can perceive and respond to challenges. This mindset can be particularly valuable in order to:

  • Encouraging Resilience and Perseverance – for students in their final years, life can often feel like a marathon. Pressure to excel academically, plan future careers and balance co curricular and social lives can be overwhelming. Understanding that not every day will be easy helps students avoid discouragement during challenging times, encouraging them to view setbacks as a normal and essential part of growth. this mindset promotes resilience, allowing them to stay focused on their goals rather than letting difficult days derail their progress.
  • Normalising Struggle in Pursuit of Growth – throughout students senior years they can experience great personal growth, they can be pushed out of their comfort zone to meet academic, social and athletic demands. The Rule of Thirds helps normalise the inevitable discomfort associated with such growth. By understanding that struggle is a natural component of success, students can focus on learning from these moments rather than seeing them as failures. This outlook cultivates a growth mindset, an essential tool for both personal growth and academic success.
  • Preventing Burnout by Setting Realistic Expectations – When students learn to expect a mix of positive and challenging experiences in their pursuits, they become less likely to burn out. The Rule of Thirds encourages them to set realistic expectations for themselves, recognising that progress isn’t linear. By acknowledging that not every moment will feel rewarding or inspiring, students can build sustainable habits that allow them to stay committed to long-term goals without sacrificing mental health and well-being.
  • Building Self-Awareness and Reflection – The Rule of Thirds encourages students to regularly reflect on how they’re feeling about their progress. This self-awareness can lead to better decision-making, as students learn to gauge when to push through challenges and when to recalibrate their approach. With this principle in mind, they can more objectively assess whether their efforts are aligned with their values and aspirations, empowering them to make informed choices about their future paths.

By applying this mindset, students can manage expectations, maintain perspective, and develop the resilience needed to pursue their dreams, whether in academia, athletics, or personal ambitions. In this sense, it becomes a lifelong strategy for achieving meaningful goals without being derailed by temporary challenges.

Tennis

We had some good results from Redlands Tennis on Saturday with great matches played at both Cammeray and Mosman Lawn Tennis Club.

Despite the rain showers, we completed all the matches.

At 8am Redlands 21 played very well and won against St Pius 21.

We had some great matches at 10am, with some very solid wins in straight sets – Redlands 1 won against St Pius 1, Redlands 2 beat Cammeraygal 1 and Redlands 16 beat St Pius 15.

We are very pleased with the attendance and effort by students at the Development Squads with very positive feedback about the performance from the coaches.

We are looking forward to some great tennis this weekend.

Please ensure you are on time for your matches – please be there at 745am for an 8am match and 9.45am for a 10am match.

All matches will be ON unless you are notified – any cancellation will be updated on Clipboard.

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)
