Mary’s House Walk
Mary’s House Services, founded in 2015-16 by residents of Sydney’s northern suburbs, provides crucial support for women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Established to address a lack of government-funded services, Mary’s House offers safe accommodation and personalised case management by specialized social workers, housing up to four families at a time and delivering over 14,000 nights of shelter since its inception. Mary’s House Services focuses on fostering safety, financial independence, and social support, drawing on evidence-based practices and lived experience. Community-funded, it relies on donations, advocacy, and partnerships to sustain its mission of creating a safer, more supportive community for survivors of domestic violence.
On Sunday 27 October, roughly 30 Redlands students and teachers arrived at St Leonards Park to participate in the 2024 Mary’s House Walk. It was an inspiring community event dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support women and children affected by domestic and family violence. Students walked with their pets and family members together with hundreds of other people to say ‘no’ to domestic and family violence. Although Mary’s House didn’t quite achieve its goal of $250,000, they were still greatly impressed by the massive turnout of community members and Margaret Beazley, Governor of New South Wales. Redlands raised $3195 and we should be very proud for standing up and supporting such an incredible charity and cause. I know my friends and I had a lot of fun and it really brought all the students together.

NSW Schools Constitutional Convention 2024
We are proud to announce that one of our dedicated Year 11 students, Sophie Yu, recently attended the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Sydney. This unique annual event, celebrating its 30th year, provided students like Sophie with a platform to delve into the workings of Australia’s Constitution and our system of government.
A reflection from Sophie,
On Tuesday this week, I attended the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention along with 95 other Year 12 students from across the state at the NSW Parliament House. A day for discussion and consideration of the Australian law, we focused especially on the theme of ‘Limits on freedom of political expression’.
The day began with a lecture from Professor Emerita Anne Twomey of Sydney University. She gave detailed insight into the intricacies of our rights in the area according to the constitution, explaining the complexity of solving issues of political fraud in the digital age. Afterwards, we moved into smaller groups where we shared personal insights, then voted on a plebiscite, expressing our support for such limits.
Overall, the Convention was an eye-opening experience. Constitutional law is an aspect of social justice often overlooked by young people, by myself certainly, but the educators at Parliament House were both engaging and informative, giving all of us newfound insight into our legal frameworks. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate and encourage all students to get involved in the future.
