Last night we celebrated our departing Year 12 students at their Prize Giving Ceremony and Valedictory Dinner which culminated a week of events for them as their journey at Redlands is rapidly coming to a close. It has been a special time of fun, reflection, appreciation and nostalgia for the Class of 2024 before they head into their final HSC and IB Examinations at the beginning of next term.

I have been very fortunate to have observed and been a part of their journey in the Secondary School since 2019 when I was Head of Secondary School and many of them commenced Year 7. Personally, I am especially proud to have seen this Year Group mature and grow over their time at Redlands, and I believe they are truly life ready and primed to make a real difference in the wider world.

At their final assembly on Wednesday, I shared three words that I believe best summarise the Class of 2024 from my observations of them over six years, and especially over the past 12 months. My three words are:

Caring. Their genuine care and support for each other, members of our school community and members of the wider community has been evident through the way they have checked in with each other, whether through Covid lockdowns or at their Year 12 Study Centre post assessment debriefs; the connections they have made with other students across the Year Groups from Kindergarten to Year 11; and the powerful Service Learning initiatives they have led this year.

Courageous. The courage they have shown through their willingness to push themselves and to step out of their comfort zones, fittingly captured in their Year 12 motto, “Step Beyond”, has set a wonderful example for the rest of the School to follow.

Authentic. Their genuine authenticity and vulnerability in sharing their true selves with the rest of the school community has helped to create a powerfully supportive culture which was so aptly summed up by the student leadership team in their final student run assemblies recently.

So, Class of 2024, thank you, for not only “leaving it better than you found it”, but for also leaving a legacy of care, courage and authenticity for future students to aim to live up to and strive to emulate for years to come.

Please enjoy this final farewell and thank you from the whole School to the Class of 2024 during yesterday’s Guard of Honour.

It has been a wonderful Term 3 at Redlands with many different activities and events across our campuses allowing our students to shine in so many different ways. I hope students and families enjoy the break ahead and return to school refreshed for the final few months of the year on Monday 14 October.
