Issue 30 2024 Term 3 Week 10 - 26 Sep 2024

From the Principal

Last night we celebrated our departing Year 12 students at their Prize Giving Ceremony and Valedictory Dinner which culminated a week of events for them as their journey at Redlands is rapidly coming to a close. It has been a special time of fun, reflection, appreciation and nostalgia for the Class of 2024 before they head into their final HSC and IB Examinations at the beginning of next term.

I have been very fortunate to have observed and been a part of their journey in the Secondary School since 2019 when I was Head of Secondary School and many of them commenced Year 7. Personally, I am especially proud to have seen this Year Group mature and grow over their time at Redlands, and I believe they are truly life ready and primed to make a real difference in the wider world.

At their final assembly on Wednesday, I shared three words that I believe best summarise the Class of 2024 from my observations of them over six years, and especially over the past 12 months. My three words are:

Caring. Their genuine care and support for each other, members of our school community and members of the wider community has been evident through the way they have checked in with each other, whether through Covid lockdowns or at their Year 12 Study Centre post assessment debriefs; the connections they have made with other students across the Year Groups from Kindergarten to Year 11; and the powerful Service Learning initiatives they have led this year.

Courageous. The courage they have shown through their willingness to push themselves and to step out of their comfort zones, fittingly captured in their Year 12 motto, “Step Beyond”, has set a wonderful example for the rest of the School to follow.

Authentic. Their genuine authenticity and vulnerability in sharing their true selves with the rest of the school community has helped to create a powerfully supportive culture which was so aptly summed up by the student leadership team in their final student run assemblies recently.

So, Class of 2024, thank you, for not only “leaving it better than you found it”, but for also leaving a legacy of care, courage and authenticity for future students to aim to live up to and strive to emulate for years to come.

Please enjoy this final farewell and thank you from the whole School to the Class of 2024 during yesterday’s Guard of Honour.

It has been a wonderful Term 3 at Redlands with many different activities and events across our campuses allowing our students to shine in so many different ways. I hope students and families enjoy the break ahead and return to school refreshed for the final few months of the year on Monday 14 October.

Community Update

It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to be able to attend the Year 12 Farewell Assembly and Valedictory Dinner yesterday.  I have been inspired by the service and endeavour demonstrated by this impressive cohort of students in their final years at Redlands, closely supported of course by their families and teachers who shared in the celebrations. We look forward to following the journey of our 2024 Valedictorians as our newest cohort of Redlanders.

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through Term 3. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in bringing our various groups together both socially and operationally. The RPFA is drawn from dedicated and passionate parent and carer volunteers who selflessly support the growth and prosperity of our School and the wider Redlands community.

Parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to nominate for the various RPFA Committee positions that will become available at the RPFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at the School on Thursday 24 October. The meeting notification can be found here. The AGM provides the opportunity for our community to hear how the RPFA serves the School and includes an update from our Principal, Sean Corcoran. The meeting concludes with the election of the committee and there is no obligation to nominate if attending the AGM.  For more information on how you can become involved as a volunteer at Redlands please visit the RPFA section.

Our highly anticipated Festival of Redlands event will take place on Saturday 19 October on our Junior Campus. Our Festival of Redlands will shine a light on 140 years of the School highlighting our rich and diverse culture, growth, talent and community. From 1-5pm, the Festival will showcase Performing Arts, Sports, Academics, Visual Arts, Innovative Design and Outdoor Education and feature an international food extravaganza and a House Challenge. More information, along with ticketing details, can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful Spring break with your family.

Foundation

Festival of Redlands

Thank you to the RPFA, Redlanders Alumni Association and Redlands staff for all their efforts in preparation for the Festival of Redlands, an incredible celebration of 140 Years of Redlands!

The Foundation team has joined these efforts with few initiatives:

Wishing Tree at the Piazza

This is a unique opportunity for you and your children to write a note of love, encouragement, or celebration to the School!  Choose a ribbon of different colour and value. Each message will be delicately hung from the branches of the tree, creating a vibrant tapestry of goodwill that everyone can enjoy.

Art Auction

A collection of artworks was crafted by the talented students of Prep School and Redlands House. Each piece reflects the creativity and passion of our young artists and is a unique opportunity to own an original artwork created by the students from each class. Join us in celebrating creativity while making a positive impact in our community!

The proceeds from these initiatives will directly support the High Country Campus, helping to expand facilities for all our Redlands students.

Alumni Café

Treat yourself to a barista-made coffee and indulge in home-baked cupcakes, brownies and cookies lovingly prepared by our Redlander community, relax and enjoy the sunshine (hopefully!) and mingle with other community members as the celebrations continue…

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, and learn where we are meeting this month or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting will be during the week of October 28, when we will be discussing Safe Haven by Shankari Chandran.

Seen a book you’re dying to read and discuss? Recommend it for our next read!

Year 12 Farewell

It’s been a significant week for Year 12 as they move through various rites of passage in their culmination of learning and living as Redlands students.

On Tuesday Year 12 were able to have some fun on their Activities Day which involved a Harbour Cruise and some swimming and games at Chinaman’s Beach.

Wednesday marked their final farewell assembly with the student and staff community and Valedictory Dinner and Prize Giving at The Star. It’s been an emotional week for the students (and the adults in their life too!) and we are all very proud of them.

Farewell to Term 3

In our Year 12 Farewell Assembly on Wednesday, I wished all students a relaxing and restorative break over the coming holiday period. The student community conducted themselves maturely and respectfully during the entire farewell assembly and joyfully celebrated in wishing Year 12 all the best as they graduate.

All of the staff wish the students in Years 7 to 11 a lovely holiday experience. We thank parents and carers for their support, cooperation and trust this term and anticipate an awesome Term 4, commencing on Monday 14 October.

Year 9 Commerce Intrapreneurship Program Pitch Finals

Redlands welcomed our six partner organisations to the Senior Campus on Tuesday to watch the Year 9 teams pitch their innovative solutions. Across Term 3, students have been working hard to understand their assigned organisation, conducting market research, customer profiling and then applying a human centered design methodology to the challenge before them. They experienced site visits, a round of asynchronous feedback from the organisation, pitching and visual design masterclasses and finally the opportunity to share their team’s solution in front of the organisation.

Although working with a range of businesses, this year’s overarching theme had justice firmly at its core. Justice is about being in respectful and harmonious relationships with one another and the world around us – relationships that create cultural, social, environmental and economic opportunities for and with one another. Innovation and entrepreneurship often feels like it must be new and shiny but of course it is about the ability to look at problems, sometimes age-old problems and seemingly intractable problems in new ways or even solve new problems with existing methods. We are delighted that we were able to offer such a rich range of organisations to our cohort to work with—all of whom are striving for positive impact and challenging the status quo.

All our partners were extremely impressed with the students, each staying for a Celebration of Learning lunch afterwards to informally offer further insights and words of encouragement. Not only did we eat well but one meal for every meal purchased by Redlands will go to an addiction recovery centre in Mexico City.

Bougainvillea Retirement Village Showcase

Last Thursday, a group of Redlands performers and musicians visited Bougainvillea Retirement Village, where they put on a heartwarming showcase for the residents. The students’ performances filled the afternoon with joy and highlighted both their artistic talents and their compassion for the community.
Millie McDonald and Lily Thompson did a fantastic job as MCs, engaging the audience with trivia and creating a lively atmosphere. Their performance of City of Stars was a shining moment, showcasing their charm and stage presence.
Eliza Chang and Emma Reynolds captivated everyone with their duet, My Hero, while Megan Kirkpatrick opened the showcase with her heartfelt rendition of Out of Love. Tara Ward took us on a nostalgic journey with Journey to the Past, demonstrating her storytelling ability through music.

The showcase featured a variety of further performances, including Remie Gibbs’ enchanting Paper Moon tap dance and Betti Butcher’s touching I Know You. Daniel Koppers impressed with both Andante and Raindrop Prelude, showcasing his technical piano skills.

Jessica Jackson engaged the audience with Everybody’s Blues, and Matilda Hayes and Olive Green delighted the audience with their Cranberries acoustic cover. Ava Atkinson demonstrated her artistry with Air Varié, while Sahara Nicholas moved us with her rendition of She Used to Be Mine.

Leo Campbell added a classic touch with Fly Me to the Moon, and Edward Chang closed the musical segment with Salut d’Amour, leaving a lasting impression on all.

A special thank you to our Redlands Bougainvillea Supervisors, Alissa Ynson and Kate Moore for their support in making this event possible, and to Year 12 student Betti Butcher for her assistance and with organising all the student performances and program.

This showcase highlighted not just individual talents but also the spirit of community and connection that music fosters.

Thank you to all the performers for sharing their gifts and making the evening truly special!

Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships & Speakfest

How convincing could you be with only 2 minutes to prepare for a randomly selected topic? Could you captivate an audience with a 9-minute interpretative reading or work seamlessly with a new partner to argue a topic with only 45 minutes of preparation? These are the types of challenges faced by our Redlands students during this week’s Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships (AIDPSC) and Speakfest in Brisbane, and they rose to the occasion with great enthusiasm and skill.

Year 11 students Eleanor Blankenstein, Jesse Forrest, Hiro Phillips, and Sophie Yu represented Redlands for the first time at AIDPSC, where the winners go on to represent Australia at the World Championships. Meanwhile, Year 8 students Paige Barnett, Aimee Kang, Fergus Kerr, and Liv Law participated in Speakfest, the junior division. Across a few days of competition, students delivered interpretative readings of fiction, engaged in parliamentary-style debates, gave impromptu speeches with just two minutes of preparation, and presented persuasive or after-dinner speeches they had prepared beforehand.

The competition was intense, with many students going up against peers who had attended this event multiple times. Despite this, our students handled the pressure with composure and confidence. Their ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and adapt quickly was on full display, and it’s clear that the experience has only strengthened their public speaking skills.

While the competition itself was demanding, students had the opportunity to explore Brisbane, enjoy the city’s sights, and unwind with an evening of barefoot bowls. The camaraderie that developed within the group was one of the highlights of the trip, creating lasting memories both on and off the stage.

Special congratulations to Jesse Forrest for his 4th place finish in the after-dinner speech category and to Sophie Yu, who placed 7th in debating and 14th overall. In Speakfest, Fergus Kerr took 3rd place in the persuasive speech section, and Aimee Kang finished 15th overall – impressive accomplishments for all, especially considering the high level of competition.

A special thanks to Ms Vyvian Kang for coordinating the tour, as well as to Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill and Ms Claudia Zaferis for their invaluable support and supervision throughout the event. Their guidance and encouragement helped make the trip a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Stitching Success In Textiles Club

This week in Textiles Club, Ivy Abenino (Year 7) and Ivy Flatman (Year 8) completed a pair of pajama shorts and pants. Both students have shown great dedication, learning new skills such as threading a sewing machine, sewing different stitches, using the overlocker, and reading a pattern.

The other members of the Textiles Club are also working hard on their own pyjama projects. With continued progress, a few more finished pieces are expected at the start of next term.

It’s been a productive and rewarding term for all students in the club, with more accomplishments to come.

A big thank you to Ms Lauren Costello, our Textiles Club Supervisor, for her exceptional support and guidance of the Textiles Club students throughout the term.

Textiles Club occurs every Thursday at lunchtime in LH 1.6. All students welcome!

Start Up Success

The Start-up Bootcamp Pitch Evening last Wednesday night was a showcase of our students’ creativity, innovation, and drive to make a difference. Each student took to the stage to present their vision, addressing diverse problems and opportunities with entrepreneurial flair.

Loukas Veryinis kicked off with his concept of video shorts tailored for investors. His idea focused on bridging the gap between startups and potential investors, offering concise yet impactful presentations to spark interest.

Josh Dubowsky introduced a gamified platform to enhance financial literacy among high school students, combining education with engagement to equip young people with essential life skills.

Hugo Christy presented DIY Rides, a rim repair kit for car enthusiasts, showing an inventive approach to solving common automotive issues at home. Similarly, Hugo McDonald impressed the audience with “The Better Battery,” a battery design that can be disassembled into repairable parts—highlighting the importance of sustainability.

Rafael Rolon brought in a fitness angle with Fit Happens, an app that promotes group-based physical activities, reminding us all of the power of community in staying active.

Brodie Howes tackled the car-buying process with his Car Selection Companion, helping users make more informed decisions when purchasing a vehicle. Continuing with personal well-being, India Dutton unveiled Balance Buddy, an app focusing on the holistic integration of exercise, health, and mindfulness, a timely reminder of the need for balance in our lives.

Eddie Williams brought us back to marketing basics with EW Marketing, emphasising the importance of focusing on local communities when building a brand.

In the sustainability space, Georgia Grace addressed food waste with BiteWise, an application that helps reduce food waste at home, marrying technology with everyday practices.

The evening closed with two student-led ventures aimed at different markets. Charlie Willson introduced EarlyBird, a platform offering employment opportunities for teens, while William Thomson envisioned Sapphire, a video editing solution he deemed the future of the industry.

These students have demonstrated not only the ability to think creatively but also to respond to real-world challenges. Their dedication to developing these ideas is a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit, and we are eager to see how these projects evolve. A big thank you to Ms Liz Green, Ms Meagan Barr and all the staff who assisted in organising the event and to the students who worked tirelessly to bring their pitches to life.

Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships

How convincing could you be discussing a randomly selected topic with only 2 minutes of preparation? Could you draw readers into the world of a work of fiction in a 9-minute interpretative reading? What about convincingly arguing a topic, paired with someone you have never met, and with only 45 minutes preparation? Or could you engage an audience totally through humour, persuasion and pizazz over 10 minutes? If you think this is a challenge ready for you to conquest, then perhaps the Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships is for you!

This week, Yr 11 students Eleanor Blankenstein, Jesse Forrest, Hiro Phillips and Sophie Yu competed in the Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships in Brisbane. The winners of this competition go on to represent Australia at the Worlds competition in Malaysia! Yr 8 students, Paige Barnett, Aimee Kang, Fergus Kerr and Liv Law were also on the tour as part of the Junior division, the Australian Speakfest competition.

Across a couple of days of competition students needed to provide an interpretative reading of fiction, engage in parliamentary style debates, present impromptu 3–5-minute speeches (with only 2 minutes of preparation!) and offer a prepared persuasive speech or after-dinner speech. It is a nerve wracking and adrenaline inducing place to be, particularly as our Yr 11 students found themselves competing against students who had attended this competition for multiple years, while this was the first time Redlands has ever sent a team. Nevertheless, their confidence and poise in engaging in each activity was wonderful to see and I have no doubt that the experience has emboldened them and further developed their oratory skills. The tour also gave students some fun downtime exploring Brisbane city’s sights, sounds and surrounds, and having a relaxed evening of barefoot bowls after the first two days of competition.

Congratulations to all the students for their efforts over the week, particularly to Jesse who came 4th in the after-dinner speech section, and Sophie who came 7th in debating and 14th overall – huge achievements given the high level of competition and skill at the tournament!

Many thanks to Ms Vyvian Kang who coordinated the tour and Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill and Ms Claudia Zaferis who assisted in supervision.

Year 10

Farewell Term 3

As Term 3 comes to a close, it’s clear that our Cremorne Campus students have had a productive and ultimately rewarding term. Yr 10 has been especially busy, juggling a full schedule of assessments and activities. From welcoming the Yr 6 students on the Senior Campus for lunch to participating in the Service Learning trip to Urban Walks and Cook4Good, they have shown dedication, thoughtfulness and engagement with their peers and the wider community.

Term 4 promises to be just as exciting, with Australian Business Week, the Yr 10 Camp at Myall Lakes, and the Harbour Cruise all on the horizon. It will be a time for Yr 10 to step up into leadership roles as senior students, especially when supporting the new student leadership team by fulfilling Gate Duty whilst they are away at their Yr 11 Camp. These experiences are vital for Yr 10 as they lay the foundation for a strong commencement to their senior years.

After a busy term, Mr Millham and I wish all Yr 10 students a well-earned break. Whether you are going on holidays abroad or staying local, enjoy the time connecting with family and friends, we hope that you return refreshed, ready to focus and set achieving your goals for the remainder of the year.

Winter School Wrap-Up

I had the pleasure of visiting Winter School as the program drew to a close, and it was wonderful to hear students share the stories of what has made Winter School such a special part of their Redlands journey and indeed Redlands culture. Many of these students looked older and wiser than when they’d left, the mountain air clearly agreeing with them. Listening to them recall the wonderful adventures and connections they’ve experienced are a true testament to the success of the Winter School program.

Reflections from Mrs Lisa McDonald, Assistant Head of Winter School

Our largest cohort of Winter School students is travelling back to Sydney tomorrow after another incredibly successful season. Over the past eight weeks, we’ve been delighted to witness students ski and snowboard, with many making dramatic improvements in their skills.

Students have truly thrived at HCC, enhancing their independence both in the residential environment and academically. When not on the slopes, students enjoyed a variety of engaging activities, including HCC’s Got Talent, the Newspaper Fashion Show, Family Feud and games at Sport and Rec.

Year 10 students particularly appreciated living alongside their friends in the peaceful surroundings of HCC. While they have thoroughly enjoyed their time here, they are also looking forward to reuniting with their friends, family and pets back home.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Eva Fitzhenry for achieving a Bronze medal at Nationals in the Division 1 Snowboard GS race! Eva also competed in the Moguls event for her division and, excitingly, stepped up to fill a spot for the older girls in Division 1—where they went on to win a medal! Well done, Eva!

Commerce Pitch Day

On Tuesday this week, the Yr 9 cohort participated in the culminating event of their Term 3 Commerce project. Students have been working hard all term to develop a solution to a problem posed by their chosen social enterprise. A big thank you to the businesses involved, including:

  • Rooftop Bees
  • Studio A
  • Raise
  • Welcome to Country
  • Architectus
  • CandleXchange

Earlier in the term, students had the opportunity to visit and hear from the businesses and deepen their understanding of the challenges these businesses experience. This week, the businesses visited Redlands and students pitched their ideas to a real-life audience. The clients were genuinely impressed by the calibre of the students’ ideas, as well as the significant thought that had gone into planning how this idea would be executed.

It was great to see many groups take the opportunity to network with clients in the Fahl Garden at lunch, with a number of groups receiving offers to engage in further conversation with the clients about implementing their ideas.

House Debating Finals

Last Thursday saw the finals of our House Debating for Year 9. The topic was incredibly relevant, examining the question of if the federal government should adopt South Australia’s proposed legislation banning kids under 14 from social media.

Congratulations to Roseby who argued for the negative and was victorious in convincing our Year 12 adjudicator of the merits of their arguments.

Holiday Events

Japan Trip

During the holidays, 26 Yrs 9 and 10 students will be heading off to Japan for a cultural immersion experience. We wish these students (and their teachers) safe travels and look forward to hearing all about it when they return.

Touch Football Gala

In Week 1 of the holidays, four Yr 9 girls will be heading up to the Gold Coast to compete in the All-Schools Touch Football competition. The competition is an annual event with over 530 teams representing various schools both nationally and internationally.

Congratulations and good luck to the following students:

  • Elodie Melvin
  • Maya Turton
  • Amelie Dewar
  • Belle Monty

Subject Focus – English

As part of their current unit, Year 9 have been writing protest poetry. Given that camp is fast approaching I really enjoyed the following poem protesting camp food by Lizzie Grinham, Charlotte Algar and Sophia Liu.

Food Feud

Diary Entry 1: Ewww camp food

They make us eat powdered egg,

Yellow dust, no flavour begged.

A scoop of mash like glue,

Sticking to spoons in tasteless bits.

Baked beans slosh in tin cans, cold as regret,

I gag them down, but my hunger’s unmet.

Outdoors we dine, but it’s far from serene

Flies in our face, plates unclean.

Dirt in the broth, mould in the bread,

Is it too much to ask for some real food instead?

So hear us now, as we gather to shout,

We deserve better, and we’ll call you out!

For health, for strength, for a proper meal,

No more powdered egg,

We demand for real food!

This is food feud!

Diary Entry 2: Someone eat me

They call me disgusting,

bland and grotesque,

One look at me,

And I’m left alone on the desk.

Filtered through a drying chamber,

Stripped of my former glory,

I’m no longer a brunch celebrity,

But a depressing fallen story.

The people should be sued,

This a food feud!

Diary Entry 3: The Red Cross parcel

We hold each bite with humbled grace,

A feast of hope in a foreign place.

The broth is warm, the bread is kind,

A taste of belonging we’ve longed to find.

For every grain, every crumb we receive,

We offer thanks, and we greatly believe.

For the hours that we queued,

This is such a food feud!

Year 8

Farewell Year 12

It is that time of Year again where we bid farewell to the wonderful student leaders in our school – not just those with official titles, but all our Yr 12 students who have played their own little part in making Redlands the school that it is today. It is often said that a school can rise no higher than its leaving class and it has been a privilege to see how our Class of 2024 have helped to foster a culture of kindness, compassion and ‘stepping beyond’ at Redlands. Our Yr 8 cohort still fondly remember those who supported them in Yr 7 Peer Support and wish the class of 2024 all the best in their endeavours as they prepare for their final examinations in the HSC and IB.

As part of our Yr 12 farewell celebrations, the school recently also held a fun filled lip-sync competition! In the beautiful sunshine and surrounds of the Fahl Garden, students performed classic hits and pop chart toppers, and so did the staff! The Executive, Yr 12 Year Advisors and even Mr Corcoran got up onto the stage to strut their stuff. Congratulations to the teachers who ended up winning the competition!

As a final gesture, on Wednesday of this week, students from Yrs 7-11 also formed a celebratory tunnel to bid farewell to Yr 12 one last time. There were some smiles and tears from the Yr 12 students as they embraced the joyous recognition offered by students from across the Secondary School.

Beyond Ourselves – Service in Action

This week we concluded our Tutor service program, and it has been wonderful to see how ideas of serving others have been embraced by students across the term. Whether it be helping the Library staff put genre labels on new books; assisting IT with preparing new laptops for staff collection; helping our Canteen team with composting food waste material; recycling cans across the School; cleaning up areas like the Undercroft and Fahl Garden; baking tasty treats for staff; helping to return lost property; producing knitted squares for joey pouches; or creating cards for the retirement home at Bougainvillea, our cohort have been hands on in supporting people across our local school community.

Thank you to all the students for their excellent work and thank you to all the Tutors and staff around the School who have supported them in engaging in meaningful service. We look forward to continuing to build a culture of service and gratitude in our Yr 8 students in the years ahead. No doubt, their lessons in working as a team and supporting others will be invaluable as they move out into shared living in the Moonbah program in Yr 9.

Below are some final photos of Dumolo Blue and McDouall Green’s efforts in knitting pouches for joeys and creating colourful cards for the residents of Bougainvillea.

Performing with a Smile even when ‘there are Daggers in Men’s Smiles’

Across the past few weeks, Yr 8 have been studying Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Macbeth. Written as a piece of propaganda to affirm the rightful rule of Shakespeare’s patron, King James I – and to warn against the dire consequences of regicide – it is a brutal play of blood, betrayal and crippling guilt. So, of course, Yr 8 are loving it!

This week, a variety of classes were performing scenes from Macbeth. 8G went so far as to bring in a huge number of baked goods to perform the Act 3 Scene 4 banquet scene, where Banquo’s ghost returns to plague Macbeth’s conscience. Meanwhile, 😯 took advantage of the sunshine to perform scenes from the play on the roof! It’s wonderful to see students embracing the bard and engaging with Shakespearean drama.

My Heart will go on – Science Experiments

Yr 8 continued to be drawn into the wonderful world of science exploration. Last Friday, they ventured into the weird and informative world of dissection, exploring the heart and lungs of a sheep. While a few students did not quite have the heart for such an experiment, others were fascinated by witnessing the internal workings of an animal. Some even took up the opportunity to blow up the lungs with their own breath – using a pump, of course!

Speakfest – an Adventure in Oratory

How convincing could you be discussing a randomly selected topic with only 2 minutes of preparation? Could you draw readers into the world of a work of fiction in a 9-minute interpretative reading? What about convincingly arguing a topic, paired with someone you have never met, and with only 45 minutes preparation? Or could you engage an audience totally through humour, persuasion and pizazz over 10 minutes? If you think this is a challenge ready for you to conquest, then perhaps Speakfest is for you!

This week, I was fortunate enough to accompany Paige Barnett, Aimee Kang, Fergus Kerr and Liv Law on a tour to Brisbane for the Australian Speakfest competition. We were also accompanied by Yr 11 students Eleanor Blankenstein, Jesse Forrest, Hiro Phillips and Sophie Yu, who competed in the Australian Individual and Debating Public Speaking Championships – the winners of which go on to represent Australia at the Worlds competition.

Across a couple of days of competition students needed to provide an interpretative reading of fiction, engage in parliamentary style debates, present impromptu 3–5-minute speeches (with only 2 minutes of preparation!) and offer a prepared persuasive speech or after-dinner speech. It is a nerve wracking and adrenaline inducing place to be, particularly as our Yr 8 students found themselves competing against Yr 9 and Yr 10 students. I am sure we will see them back at the competition in the future!

In their own words, students said of the competition:

  • ‘It was great to have lots of time to meet people from other schools and everyone was really nice. We made lots of friends from older years.’ (Liv)
  • ‘It was an amazing learning experience – very formative and engaging and provocative. It definitely built my critical thinking skills and really opened my eyes to what was possible in public speaking.’ (Fergus)
  • ‘It was even better than I expected. Everyone was really skilled, which was motivational.’ (Paige)
  • ‘It was such a nice environment as everyone was always trying to help us and they were so supportive.’ (Aimee)

Congratulations to all the students for their efforts over the week, particularly to Fergus who came 3rd in the persuasive speech section, and Aimee who came 7th in debating and 15th overall – huge achievements given the age of everyone else at the tournament!

Many thanks to Ms Vyvian Kang who coordinated the tour and Ms Claudia Zaferis who, along with me, assisted in supervision.

Student Success – Yr 8 Debating:

Last Friday our Yr 8 Debaters attended Monte for the finals of the SDN Debating competition. The team were faced with negating the proposition that poverty can be used as a defence against crimes of acquisition. In a complicated and well-argued debate, our team were victorious! Congratulations to Paige Barnett, Eleanor Flatman, Vivienne Matthews and Gabby Thomas on their fantastic win!

Student Recognition – Alex Taylor

Congratulations to Alex Taylor for his recent amazing success in Football! Alex plays in the Football NSW Youth Premier League for Bulls FC Academy. This club is the youth development academy of A League Club Macarthur FC!.  On Saturday, as team captain, Alex led his team in the grand final to win the Football NSW U14s Youth League 2 Championship by a convincing margin of 6-2. This is the second year in a row that the team has won the 2023 Championship. Alex has captained the team both years. The club has now gained promotion to Youth League 1 in 2025, which is the highest level of youth football in NSW, and Alex is excited for the increasing level of play and competition to come!

Student Vs Teacher Lip-Sync Battle

It is that time of Year again where we bid farewell to the wonderful student leaders in our School – not just those with official titles, but all our Yr 12 students who have played their own little part in making Redlands the school that it is today. It is often said that a school can rise no higher than its leaving class and it has been a privilege to see how our class of 2024 have helped to foster a culture of kindness, compassion and ‘stepping beyond’ at Redlands. As part of our Yr 12 farewell celebrations, the school recently also held a fun filled lip-sync competition! In the beautiful sunshine and surrounds of the Fahl Garden, students performed classic hits and pop chart toppers, and so did the staff! The school executive, Yr 12 Advisors and even Mr Corcoran got up onto the stage. Congratulations to the teachers who ended up winning the competition!

Year 12 Guard of Honour

Today we said goodbye to out Yr 12 students and acknowledged their kindness, vulnerability and authentic approach to their senior students. Yr 7 students gathered along the Senior Campus to farewell these students. It’s hard to think in five years time our Year 7s will be following in their footsteps.

World Clean Up Day

Over the years, many national, regional and local governments and communities have been undertaking clean-up activities globally. World Clean Up Day represents the reflection on their achievements. The clean-ups serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility we share in preserving and maintaining a clean and healthy environment as well as sustainable waste and resources management.

Yr 7 students have been engaging in a school clean-up over the last week and got hands on making sure our school is a positive environment for everyone.

House Debating Final – Well done Roseby!

Congratulations to Roseby and Cowper in making it to the final House Debate last week. It was a fantastic competition where both sides diligently prepared their rebuttals ready for each round of debating.  The Topic was ‘AI generated works should be considered art.’

Well done to the Roseby team, Charlie Benfield, Sophie Wong and Sammy Halliday and the Cowper team Elias Buggy-Axton, Alexia Tsacalos, Kody Benoliel, Marcus Melvin and Calvin Macnab.

A big congratulations to Roseby who were declared the overall winners of the House Debating Competition.

SDN Debating Final

The SDN Schools Debating Network is a competitive Debating league for schools in Sydney, providing a platform for students to develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills. It brings together teams from various schools to engage in structured debates on a wide range of topics, promoting intellectual growth and confidence. The network emphasises the importance of clear argumentation, teamwork, and respectful discourse in a competitive yet supportive environment.

A huge congratulations to Elias Buggy-Axton, Alexia Tsacalos, Jenna Forrest and Bernice Cheung who won the final of the SDN Debating competition last Friday.

Manly Jazz

It was wonderful to be able to watch Redlands Junior Jazz Band in the sun last Sunday afternoon. We had many of our Yr 7 musicians performing to a large crowd of jazz enthusiasts. Well done to the following students on their participation and commitment to music at Redlands: Bear Whitelaw, William Beeston, Thomas Bye, Jackson Humphreys, Vivian Killin, Miriam Killin, Calvin Macnab and Ines Tan.

Shout Outs

Well done to Louis Dobson who won the under 14 year boys match play singles title at the Bathurst Spring Open and Junior competition over the weekend.  He played 16 matches over the course of the tournament, a fantastic achievement!

Routine

We know that routine provides structure and stability for our students, helping them to feel secure and reduce anxiety. It also promotes good time management, healthy habits, and responsibility, supporting both cognitive and emotional development. A consistent routine also reduces stress for both children and parents, making daily tasks more manageable. Students are encouraged to take an active role in establishing healthy routines and habits both at school and home.

End of Term 3

We just wanted to finish off with a big thank you to all of our Yr 7 students, teachers, parents and friends who have all contributed in making this term a huge success.

We have noticed a remarkable difference in engagement and diligence across our Yr 7 cohort and are keen to continue raising the bar to ensure all of our students can be the best versions of themself.

Next term we will focus on the following goals…

  • Timely submission of home learning tasks
  • Further increased engagement in lessons
  • High levels of organisation for each lesson

A collaborative approach with these goals will make a huge difference in finishing off Yr 7 in the best possible way.

We hope you all have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 4.

Head of Junior School

Thank you to the many parents and carers who made time to visit their children’s classes in recent the Gallery Walks. We very much value the opportunity to showcase the learning our students have undertaken across the term as well as the opportunity to strengthen our partnership with Redlands families.

Year 6 Gallery Walk

Our Year 6 students shared their learning through a showcase of their innovative solutions to natural disaster preparedness in our end of term Gallery Walk. Student’s solutions addressed natural disaster preparedness with a focus on safeguarding children’s rights during such events. Each group prepared a presentation, sharing their ideas with parents and classmates, and several groups had the opportunity to present their proposals to UNICEF Australia at their downtown headquarters.

Year 4 Gallery Walk

Year 4 students welcomed friends and family to their Gallery Walk, proudly showcasing a range of their learning experiences. Highlights included engaging maths challenges, interactive coding tasks with Spheros, and the sharing of their Geographical and English learning. Visitors also enjoyed viewing students’ artwork, which reflected their creativity and learning journey. It was a wonderful opportunity for Year 4 to share their progress and achievements in a fun and interactive way.

Year 3 Gallery Walk

Year 3 Gallery Walk saw family and friends join us in our classrooms for a morning of learning. Excitement filled the hallway as students prepared for the big Crack the Code challenge. Each class shared their Acknowledgement of Country, summarized English texts, and explained their maths learning this year. Parents and students teamed up to solve riddles and find a secret location using mapping and coordinate skills. It was wonderful to see students sharing their learning with their parents, and we thank everyone for joining us and embracing the challenge!

Year 5/6 Business Boot Camp

A team of enthusiastic students from Years 5 and 6 enjoyed a day at the MQ Incubator to get their first taste of entrepreneurialism. They moved through a process of ideation, prototyping and finally pitching their ideas for a Christmas Market Stall. This day long intensive was a precursor to Redlands latest cocurricular offering, Junior Bootcamp. The after school club will run throughout Term 4 with a real world Christmas Market experience at the end.

UNICEF

Thirteen of our Year 6 students recently had the opportunity to present their innovative solutions at a UNICEF event, focused on supporting children during natural disasters. After weeks of collaborative brainstorming, design, and prototyping, three groups from our school were chosen to pitch their ideas alongside students from other schools. Their projects – Life Jacket, Smartband and Buy-a-box – each tackled different child rights, including safety, health and the right to play in times of crisis. The event was not only a chance for our students to showcase their creativity but also to learn from others and receive valuable feedback. It was an inspiring and enriching day for all involved.

ICAS Academic Competition

A huge congratulations to our Junior School students who achieved High Distinctions in the ICAS academic competition, placing them in the top 1% in Australia.

Milly (Yr 6) in English and Maths, Sasha (Yr 6) in English, Sienna (Yr 4) in English, Vihaan (Yr 4) in Science, Liam (Yr 6) in Science and Alaina (Yr 5) Spelling.

Head of Preparatory School

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a lovely break. If you are travelling, safe travels and if not, then my hope is that the variation to school routine provides some down time for you and your family.

Term 3 is always one of my favourite terms at Redlands as our students engage in units of inquiry that encourage such curiosity. By this time of the year, learners have developed a strong ‘toolbox’ for learning and can draw on so many different strategies to express and demonstrate their thinking. Their ‘learning resilience’ has grown to a level where they feel confident to think outside the box and try new things, knowing that learning from mistakes is a great way to grow. In saying this, I have also observed so many of our students listening to feedback and feeling confident to give feedback to their friends. Such a powerful way to learn and a great foundational skill to develop.

We have focused this term on being kind. I start our Tuesday lines each week with a simple question ‘how much does it cost to be kind to someone’ and all our Prep students are very quick to tell me that it costs nothing! In the playground and in the classroom, staff and students are working together to ensure that the power of being kind is celebrated and encouraged. Talking to someone, not about them, checking why a friend is looking sad or including a friend who may be eating or playing alone are just some of the many ways our students have been showing kindness.

Again, I wish everyone a lovely break and on behalf of all the staff, thank you for your ongoing support and connection with us in prep.

For your planning, please find key events in Redlands House and Prep School for Term 4.

Year 12 Guard of Honour

Senior and PreK students had the joy of participating in a special Guard of Honour for our Yr 12 graduates. Joined by our Prep school friends, we lined the pathway from Dunnet Hall, clapping and cheering as the teary-eyed graduates made their way back to the Senior Campus. This heartfelt moment not only showcased the bond between the students but also created lasting memories for everyone involved. It was a beautiful reminder of the support and encouragement that our school community offers.

Congratulations to our Yr 12 students on reaching this important milestone! We wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Secondary Sport

As we move into the holiday break it is important to encourage everyone to stay active over the holiday breaks. We have a few holiday sessions in the works, with the Touch Football High Performance squad heading to the Gold Coast for the All School Touch Football Tournament, the Senior Rowers are heading to Berry as their preparation for the season ramps up, and the Basketball program is running some development sessions during the second week of the holidays. Whether it is with the school based programs or external, we encourage you all to stay active, heading to the park with some mates to throw the football around, or play some pick up basketball, even going for a run/walk, keeping that active fitness will set everyone up for a great start to the winter season.

During the holidays we can often see ourselves guilty of falling into a sedentary lifestyle with increased screen time and less structured activity, staying active will help counter this. Staying active ensures we can retain our conditioning, preventing a drop in performance when we return to Term 4.

For those looking to get started on their exam preparation, regular activity enhances brain function, improving memory and focus, which helps stay sharp for academic tasks. It is also proven to reduce stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression, by remaining active we release endorphins, improving mood and increasing energy which can positively impact our overall well being.

We are wishing you all a safe and enjoyable holiday break, and look forward to Term 4 with the summer season starting and lots to look forward to! best of luck to the Year 12 students for their upcoming exams!

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

Rep Sport Summer Sport Trials

Thank you to all our students who were involved in our Summer Sport trials last week in preparation for the Term 4 Rep season that commences first week back in Term 4. We were able to get through our Tennis, Touch, Girls Basketball, Mixed Basketball and our Year 3 and 4 Mixed Basketball in skills and drills and then full games. Those students who did not attend the trials will be assessed in Term 4 Week 1. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

  • Ability: in direct comparison to other students across the sport
  • Attendance: any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
  • Attitude: this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Parents and carers are reminded to check the teams each Friday afternoon for changes that may have taken place at training during the week. Students may at times be asked to fill in for other teams occasionally due to absences etc.

Non-Rep Sport Recommencing Term 4

At our assembly I reminded our students about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport in Term 4. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

Can you please ensure your check your child’ activities to see what sport they are commencing in Term 4 making sure they bring the appropriate gear and or equipment to sport. Those families who have children enrolled in Swimming, Sailing and Surfing were sent paperwork to complete, and these must be completed so as to ensure your child can enter the water in their first session next term.

Non Rep families are also reminded to check the home page of Pulse as well as their individual sport pages on a regular basis for updates.

Redlands Olympics

Congratulations to France on winning Gold at our Olympics which have taken place over the last 9 weeks. With points awarded for Hurdles, 80m sprint, prone hold, standing long jump, target kick, target throw and then three weeks of Football, the placings were decided yesterday at Wednesday Sport. Well done to all students on their enthusiastic participation.

So Long Year 12 and Thanks for All The Fish!

This week as part of the very long goodbye I heard many speeches with well considered phrasing and beautifully articulated sentiment. I thought what a wonderful place Redlands is – and to be fair this is a sentiment that has been expressed to me in the past two weeks on many occasions. In this vein I began to reflect on the journey the students in HSC Drama and IB Theatre have had this year and thought I might share some highlights.

In the first Term of HSC the Year 12s performed a brilliant range of Performance essays, guided by their incredible teacher, Ms Marita Jansons. The work was sophisticated and intelligent and reflected their depth of understanding, using the texts Stolen and Neighbourhood Watch. The second Topic, Approaches to Acting we saw them apply theory from Jacques Lecoq, Levels of tension and the Poetic Body and Versold Meyerhold, Biomechanics. Meantime they were all busy working on the Individual Projects, with all of the cohort, with the exception of one student selected to do a monologue, and Hannah selecting costume design using the iconic Friedrich Durrenmatt text, The Visit. In the final term, students mastered the Group Project creating work of a very high standard, again reflecting their skills and knowledge. As Acting Subject Coordinator this year, I have had the great pleasure of seeing these amazing humans grow in spirit and strength as their pieces developed and their collaborative Drama journey progressed. They are an amazing group of students who certainly excelled in the final weeks with 7 nominations across Group and Individual Projects definitely being something to be very proud of. To get the students across that finish line we have offered a workshop on Australian Contemporary Theatre Practice which will be held on 11 October. I am looking forward to running it as Ms Jansons is taking long service leave, a very well-deserved break.

On the other side of the academic fence this year I have had the great pleasure of guiding the IB Theatre cohort through their course. A very different journey to their HSC peers.

The year started with the Production Proposal where the students act as creator and director using a playscript of their choice to create an imagined production. We had a fabulous range of plays and students tested their work by running workshops in class for each other. Following this we launched into the Collaborative Project that was probably one of the highlights for me in the year. All three groups were of such a high standard and used the work of physical theatre experts like Jacques Lecoq, Vesold Meyerhold, Frantic Assembly, Complicité and Gecko as their guide. Academic rigour comes into play here as they have to not only act and collaboratively devise but they also have to direct and design the 10-minute performance. The students did not disappoint with sophisticated work in the form of three very bespoke performances. The students then launched into the World Theatre Traditions Research Task with diversity coming in the form of Noh, Kabuki, Commedia and Peking Opera. Tracing the footsteps of practice and applying this to theory was a very strong element of this task and many hours were spent trying to move from novice to (almost) expert(s). However, the absolute highlight of the IB Course for me this year was definitely the Solo Theatre Piece. There were some magnificent performances and for those of us lucky enough to sit in the Drama Studio over the two nights and see the incredible camaraderie with students from all across the Year 12 cohort, it was a magical experience. The strength of the work was not just in the vulnerability of the beautiful nuanced performances but also in the incredible intestinal fortitude to apply theory in practice, some of the most remarkable, challenging and sophisticated pieces I have seen in some 15 years of teaching the IB. A workshop will also be held for IB students on 11 October to finalise their reports for the Solo.

I personally would like to thank the Drama and Theatre Captains, Olivia Everingham and James Stuart, whose absolute can-do attitude, brilliant selfless actions, warmth, charm and talents will be greatly missed, you raise up the subjects with integrity and intelligence. Thank you both so very much, you have been a huge support to the Drama and Theatre Department this year. It also goes without saying what a phenomenal job the Arts Captains have done on the bigger school arena across all of the Arts, the remarkable triple threat Ms Hallie Hunt, and formidable Sholto Mirrlees-Black – thank you – you have created very large shoes that are going to be difficult to fill.

We have a range of students who have applied to Performing Arts courses at various universities for 2025, such as NIDA, WAPPA and VCA, but not all are for acting. Charli Waterland has created a remarkable portfolio and worked tirelessly to prepare a thoughtful and sophisticated submission, and whilst it is unusual for NIDA to take students straight from school I thoroughly encourage them all to continue to reach out for their dreams and don’t stop believing or as Eva said, “Dream Big”, and find a place where you can continue to thrive.

Again, many I please offer my congratulations to this graduating cohort, to the many hours of hard work and collaboration that certainly seems to have paid dividends. We are not raising a troupe of actors, but rather I think we have been very successful in contributing to the formation of some very well-rounded empathetic 21st century leaders. Bravo!

I would also like to thank the Drama and Theatre staff, past and present, along with the incredible band of Tutors led by Ms Virtue, who have also taken this journey with you all, and all contributed in some ways to the success of these students: Ms Jansons, Mr Gidney, Ms Lamb, Ms Sparke, Ms Whitmore, Ms Novis and Mr Hawkins.

Please put the 8 November in your diaries for the Drama Celebration Night to be held in Redlands Hall; it will represent a cross section of work from Year 3 (Extra Curricular) all the way to Year 12.

Have a restful break.

Music

As we come to the end of this term, this is a great opportunity to reflect on what an incredibly exciting term we’ve had in Music. In just one term, we’ve had an incredible amount of both internal and external opportunities for our students, with lasting memories for students and something on every single week!

Last Sunday, many of our students performed in the Manly Jazz Festival. It was great to see our community out in force to support our musicians.

I want to take this moment to thank all of the staff involved in making this opportunities possible, as well as the support from our community. It doesn’t happen without you!

Calling Future Viola and Double Bass Players!

Are you looking to stand out in the orchestra and take on an exciting musical challenge? Our ensembles are in need of talented students to learn the viola and double bass! Both of these instruments play essential roles in creating the rich, full sound of an ensemble. Whether you’re interested in deep, resonant basslines or the warm, unique voice of the viola, now is the perfect time to start learning. Get in touch with Ms Moses if you are interested.
