Year 7

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope the break provided a chance for some much-needed rest and relaxation, allowing you to recharge both mentally and physically for the term ahead.

Mr Walker, our Yr 7 Tutors and I have been hearing many wonderful stories from our Yr 7 students about their holidays. Some highlights included overseas travel, catching up with friends, finding new mountain biking tracks, reading a new book, fishing, skiing and snowboarding. I was lucky to head back to Europe these holidays to catch up with family and friends after many years apart. The highlights of our trip were a visit to the Castles of Sintra just outside of Lisbon and walking around the city of Copenhagen taking in the sights before a trip to Tivoli Gardens.

One of the many things I loved about Copenhagen was learning about the concept of HYGGE, which in short means taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about – or even by yourself – to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures. If you are practicing hygge, you are embracing presence over productivity.

New Families

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our three new Yr 7 families joining Redlands this term. We hope you settle in comfortably and quickly become an integral part of our vibrant community. We are excited to get to know you and support your journey here at Redlands.

High Expectations of Year 7 Students in Lessons

Starting off the term with high expectations of behaviour, diligence, and engagement is crucial for Yr 7 students as it sets a positive tone for the entire term. Establishing clear standards helps students understand the importance of respect, responsibility, and active participation in their learning environment. High expectations encourage students to strive for excellence, stay focused on their studies, and contribute positively to the classroom dynamic. This proactive approach not only enhances individual academic success but also fosters a supportive and productive school community where everyone can thrive. By committing to these standards from the beginning, Year 7 students can build strong foundations for their future academic and personal growth.

Yr 7 Student Conferences

On Wednesday 31 July, parents and carers of students in Yr 7 will have the chance to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers.

This conference is an excellent opportunity to connect with teachers and gain insight into your child’s strengths and areas for development. To help students take greater ownership, during Tutor Time we will be creating some sentence starters to assist with the flow of these conversations. We are encouraging students to take the lead in introducing their parents and carers to their teachers and to come up with at least one question to ask each subject teacher about how they can improve either their engagement, diligence or behaviour during lessons.

Critical Reasoning Course

Congratulations to the following students Kody Benoliel, Bernice Cheung, James Doree, Ashton Hsiau, Irene Kim, Julian Lundberg, Cleo McLay, Sophia Moriarty, Alma O’Leary, Ginevra Pecora Lauria, Marke Rolfe, Alexia Tsacalos and Ethan Wei who took part in the Critical Reasoning Course this week, which saw Dr Regis and Dr Poon present a workshop on Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development.

Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development outlines how individuals progress through stages of moral reasoning. It includes three levels:

  1. Pre-conventional: Morality is based on avoiding punishment and seeking personal rewards.
  2. Conventional: Morality is based on conforming to social norms and maintaining social order.
  3. Post-conventional: Morality is based on abstract principles and universal ethical values, transcending specific laws and rules.

Our Yr 7 and Yr 8 students did a fantastic job engaging in this session and demonstrated outstanding confidence and cognitive ability when faced with challenging questions and discussions. Thank you to everyone involved in the running and organisation of this fantastic event.
