Issue 21 2024 Term 3 Week 1 - 25 Jul 2024

From the Principal

There was a palpable positive energy on the campus this week as all staff returned to school on Monday for our professional learning day and students returned on Tuesday for their first day of classes. I hope all parents, carers and students were able to enjoy nourishing family time over the holidays as we head into the second half of the school year.

Over the last week of these holidays, I was honoured to travel to Boston to attend Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education Achieving Excellence: Leadership Development for Principals course. The course was attended by 160 principals and educational leaders from around the world – 130 from the United States and 30 from other countries.

It was a wonderful week of learning, reflection, stimulation and connection with these educational leaders from around the world, and not surprisingly, we quickly realised that we share many of the same current joys and challenges at our wide variety of schools.

Pleasingly, much of the week was an affirmation of the approaches we are taking and the direction we are heading here at Redlands. Key throughlines from the course such as adopting an adaptive leadership stance; balancing a culture of high expectations with high support; in depth analysis of data to improve student learning; fostering community connectedness; strengthening family engagement and partnership; and the importance of building trust throughout the community have all been key areas of emphasis for us at Redlands over the past two years.

I have already shared some of my learnings with all staff at Monday’s professional learning day and with our Executive team at our beginning of term meeting, and I look forward to sharing further learnings with staff and parents in the weeks ahead.

I would like to acknowledge all of the staff, parents and in particular Friends of Snowsports whose efforts led to another successful Redlands Cup at Thredbo in the holidays. I would also like to the congratulate the many students who competed and achieved exceptional results. Over the break we also hosted tours of High Country Campus outside of Jindabyne so families could get an up close and personal look at this beautiful campus which is home to our Winter School and from next year our Year 9 Moonbah Program.

Finally, I am looking forward to attending the Secondary School Gala Arts on Friday evening – one of the annual highlights of the Redlands calendar where we showcase the diverse range of talents across our creative and performing arts community in a spirited House Competition format. Good luck to all performers and may the best House win!

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It was a pleasure to join the Junior School Parent Contact Group (PCG) meeting earlier this week. We are so grateful for our active and passionate PCGs who continue to explore and deliver ways to keep our community connected, included and supported. The term has commenced with a vast array of class, year group and program events and activities for  parent and carers and these can all be found listed in the RPFA [link to RPFA section] section of Note Day.

My thanks to our students, staff and alumni, along with the many parents and carers who support their children in preparation, for the wonderful performances and production of Gala Arts 2024.  In a whole of community event it was particularly inspiring to see the connection between our alumni, the School and our performers. Our alumni continue to inspire, support and motivate our students and staff in all aspects of their endeavours. Our Guest Judges this year provide a small but impressive snapshot of our alumni who are pursuing careers and further study across the performing arts. Their impressive portfolios of work can be found in the Foundation [link to Foundation section] section of today’s Note Day.

Planning is well underway for the Festival of Redlands, a celebration of Redlands’ 140th year proudly hosted by the Redlands Parents and Friends Association and the Redlanders Alumni Association, in collaboration with the School. This unique event will showcase our community’s rich history of achievements, programs and talent through a diverse array of interactive activities, displays and performances in an afternoon of fun, food and entertainment. We invite you to celebrate, participate and enjoy the festivities with us.  More information, along with a call out for volunteers, can be found here [link to RPFA section].

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Head of Secondary School

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to all our parents and carers as we embark on an exciting journey into Term 3 at Redlands. As we reflect on the achievements and growth of our students thus far, we are eager to share the enriching learning activities planned for this term. From engaging projects that foster critical thinking to collaborative endeavours that cultivate creativity, our aim is to inspire and empower every student, via support and challenge.

Students are selecting subjects for study in 2025, preparing to attend Winter School, and Year 12 are finessing their understanding and distilling their knowledge for their final secondary school examinations. Tomorrow, we gather as a whole secondary school community in Dunnet Hall for a Term 3 Student-Led Assembly. We look forward to sharing in the start of a busy academic term, led by our soon to graduate Year 12 leadership team.

In partnership with you, we continue to build a supportive community where each child thrives personally, academically and socially. Your involvement and collaboration are invaluable as we work towards a successful and fulfilling term ahead. Here’s to a wonderful Term 3 filled with learning, growth, and a strong sense of connection.

Independent Learning and Self-Management

Our students are impressing us with their enhanced capacity to engage independently and self manage in 2024. We’ve seen a real uptick in Study Centre attendance across all year levels and recorded the best ever holiday workshop attendance for Year 12 in our recent 3-week break, where senior students were offered a range of HSC and IB revision sessions.

Are you keen for your child to sustain this tremendous focus or begin this term with an enhanced commitment to personal learning and responsibility?

Additional guidance, encouragement and subject specific tutoring is available via our Illuminate Scholars Program, which has already begun again this term.  To register your child, please head to the Illuminate page on pulse.

Redlands Secondary School Athletics Carnival 2024 Results

A really fun day at the end of last term saw our yearly Athletics Carnival, attended by students in Year 7 to 12. It was a beautiful sunny day which saw students across the school ‘have a go’ and for many, personal bests were achieved. We will be celebrating these students at our first Term 3 Assembly tomorrow.

Secondary School Leadership Team

If you have any specific questions or needs this term, please do reach out to the relevant member of the Secondary School Leadership Team. We are more than happy to chat over the phone, correspond via email or hold a meeting with you, underscoring our partnership approach. We sincerely appreciate parents/carers who make contact to discuss the needs of their children, provide contextual updates and reach out for additional support and recommendations regarding learning, emotional and social needs.

All school terms are ‘busy’, and Term 3 is a significant term in that much of the preparation for the following academic year, takes place. I thought you might like to understand the Secondary School Leadership Team’s priorities this term – they are outlined below:

  • Year 10 experiences and opportunities, including Winter School
  • Year 11 into Year 12 leadership process
  • Subject selection for 2025 (Year 7, 8 & 9)
  • Timetable building for 2025
  • Recruitment for 2025 (Cremorne and High Country Campus)
  • Year 12 Showcases, Trial Examinations and graduation events

The Secondary School Leadership Team supports a large team of Middle Leaders, across Academics, Pastoral, Sport and Cocurricular. Each of these teams have their own priorities for the term too, and we look forward to a rich and diverse set of experiences for students and community members.

Please do make contact with us if you have any questions or wish to offer any feedback.

We are pleased to announce our new online ordering portal has been launched through Flexischools.  The new uniform is now available to purchase along with sports uniforms and accessories.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to Yr 12 students and their families to the last term of Secondary School. As students have noticed that they are engaging in “their last” of several things at the start of this term, they are also excited and full of energy returning from productive breaks and focusing on the upcoming Trial Examinations in Wk 3.

As a record number of Yr 12 students participated in the JEDDLE, OSC and Redlands based academic workshops over the term break, presenters were impressed by their enthusiasm for the content, their engagement in the sessions and the sheer number of students committing to this additional support outside of term time. Thank you for parent and carer support from home and well done to the cohort for embracing these opportunities.

Last term wrapped up with smiles, dancing and beautiful memories for the Class of 2024. Students heard from Mr Nick Walker as his cohort started the Give Back Morning Initiative. They also heard from Mrs Jansons, Mrs Riley, Mrs Van de Peer, Mr Corcoran and their Year Advisors with thoughts on what service means to them, the meaning of giving back to the Redlands Community and how it can be a part of their lives ongoing. Students jumped into their varied activities throughout the morning with enthusiasm and ended their day at the Yr 12 Formal. Photos below showcase a few beautiful moments of the cohort entering the Shangri-La Ballroom, the cohort taking to the dance floor and having an unforgettable evening. A full collection of photos will be shared with students via a link from our external provider.

Wishing you all a rich and well-rounded last term with moments of pride, reflection and gratitude.

Nutrition and Examinations Presentation with Anna from The Biting Truth

This week, Yr 11 and 12 students engaged in a presentation by Anna, founding director of The Biting Truth and an Accredited Practising Dietician. She shared invaluable information with students regarding what to eat at breakfast to fuel your body and brain, addressed the appropriate amount of caffeine for growing teenagers to consume on a daily basis (one cup!) and busted a few myths that have been trending on TikTok. Students were encouraged to ensure they do include carbohydrates, proteins and fruits for a well-balanced breakfast and they were advised as to which local neighbourhood fast food places offer healthy, nutrient-rich meal options to keep their energy up for studying throughout the afternoon.

Anna invited students to email her with any questions about fads or specific queries about getting enough of a balance for breakfast throughout the examination period. Further information about Anna and her co-founder, Alex, can be found here.

Year 12 Legacy Gift: Our Gift, Our Legacy

It has been an exciting journey with the Year 12 Legacy Gift team working through ideas, concepts and fundraising initiatives. This year’s student led initiative is focusing on the importance of ‘Giving Back’ to the School. It is wonderful to see students working collaboratively and with a passion to continue this tradition which was started by the Class of 2016.

This year, funds raised will be contributed to the sixth Redlands Means Tested Scholarship named after Coralie Amos OAM Redlander Class of 1964. For all her efforts and commitment to Service, Coralie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

Please join Year 12 in their efforts: They are inviting the entire Redlands community to support them in their fundraising efforts. They appreciate your support as they come to the end of their Redlands journey by purchasing one, or more, of our special commemorative 2024 drink bottles, Redlands Rhino key chains and greeting cards, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.

If you make a purchase, products will be available next Term (July/August) either delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post for an extra charge.

Year 10

Welcome Back!

We hope that the break provided a chance for some much-needed rest and relaxation, allowing students and families to recharge both mentally and physically for the term ahead. This term is a pivotal experience for our Yr 10 cohort, as half of the year group embarks on the Winter School experience. Back on our Sydney campus, students will continue to prepare and solidify their course selections and senior school experience.

We encourage Yr 10 students to approach their academic and co-curricular activities with enthusiasm and dedication, making the most of every opportunity to learn and grow. Remember, staying organized and maintaining a positive mindset will be key to navigating the challenges and achieving success.

Farewell to Winter School Students

This Saturday, we will say farewell to half of our year group as they depart for Winter School. We look forward to witnessing their growth as they navigate the ski slopes and engage in academic learning at Redlands High Country Campus. For those of us remaining at the Cremorne Campus, this period offers a wonderful opportunity to strengthen existing connections and form new and exciting relationships with peers in smaller classroom settings.

Today in Chapel, our Chaplain, Ms. Phillips, spoke to Yr 10 about the notion of peace—creating peaceful and harmonious relationships with our peers and ourselves. I encourage Yr 10 to reflect on how they can cultivate peace in their lives this term, especially as they encounter new situations and experience personal growth in light of the changed cohort dynamics.

Jeans for Genes Day Bake Sale

Did you know 1 in 20 children faces a birth defect or genetic disease? That equates to around 1 student per class!

With these facts, a cause close to our hearts at Redlands is ‘Jeans for Genes’ day. This event is all about supporting medical research and raising funds for children and families living with genetic disorders.

On Friday of Week 2, we will be promoting this cause with our own ‘Jeans for Genes’ day events. Students are encouraged to come to school in their favourite pair of jeans or denim clothing, as well as wearing the colour blue. For the privilege of dressing in causal clothes, a gold coin donation will be collected during Tutor. Students may also wish to purchase a blue ribbon before school for $2 or to buy a bake sale items in the Liggins Quad at recess.

Importantly, this year, Yr 10 are in charge of coordinating and running the bake sale. To this end, WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you are able to bake some cookies, slices, brownies or cupcakes for this event that will go a huge distance towards helping us to raise important funds for the event. Year 9

Welcome Back

It was wonderful to welcome back Year 9 on Tuesday morning. Many of them seemed well rested and had fully taken advantage of the three-week break. They were well presented in their winter uniforms and eager to reconnect with their peers and teachers and get on with their job of being a student.

Year 9 into 10 Subject Selection

On Wednesday during Tutor Time, Year 9 received a presentation from Mrs Rolon on their subject choices for Year 10. She outlined the subjects available, some of the impacts that these choices can have on senior patterns of studies, as well as the considerations about the more self-directed approach needed for students planning to attend Winter School.

Mrs Rolon stressed the importance of using the handbook which students will be provided with and the sessions that have been set up during Tutor Time next week to ask questions to Subject Coordinators about the subject they are interested in to make good, informed choices for next year.

As parents you are encouraged to discuss this with your students using the subject slection handbook as a guide over the coming weekend.

Coaching Conversations

On Monday 29 July (Week 2) during Periods 1-2 and Tutor Time students will engage in their Semester 2 Coaching Conversations with their Tutor. This is an opportunity to reflect on their progress in Semester 1 and use their recent reports, student-led conferences feedback and Recognition of Academic Discussions (RAD) or Recognition of Academic Growth (RAG) to inform their approach to Term 3.

I encourage you to have a follow up conversation with your student so that you are aware of their goals and intentions for the term and can help support them with this.

Year 8

Week 1 – Welcome back to Redlands Term 3!

I hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic break and are revitalised and ready to tackle all that Term 3 throws our way! I know some of our cohort were lucky enough to travel across the world to countries in Europe, journey across the savannah in Africa, and hop across the ditch to New Zealand for some skiing and boarding on the slopes; while others just enjoyed some beautiful, well-earned downtime in Sydney and along the NSW coast. I was fortunate enough to spend some time at the absolutely gorgeous Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, as illustrated below.

Wherever the holidays took you, I hope it offered some valuable time for excitement, rest and relaxation, and connection with friends and family.

Ms Wang and I are looking forward to an exciting term ahead, as we seek to encourage the Yr 8 cohort to think beyond themselves and consider how they can engage in acts of service. Our central focus this term in our Pastoral Sessions will be on service, both within the school community and beyond in students’ own communities. We will be encouraging students to understand the benefits of helping others, serving in their community and supporting charitable causes. Tied to this, we will also be thinking about the value of gratitude and fostering skills of mindfulness in students. It should be a valuable term of social and emotional learning ahead, and we look forward to continuing to see wonderful growth in the cohort.

Year 7 and 8 Critical Reasoning Course:

On Wednesday, Redlands held a novel Critical Reasoning Course for Yrs 7 and 8, which saw Dr Regis and Dr Poon present a workshop on Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development. The purpose of the course was to introduce ethics and concepts of moral philosophy to a select group of Yr 7 and 8 students, so that they could be equipped with the intellectual skills to break down the assumptions behind theories about the ways in which humanity arrives at consciousness of morality. From all student reports, it was a really valuable and engaging afternoon.

Students did a fantastic job participating with thought and insight in the session and demonstrated outstanding confidence and cognitive ability when faced with challenging questions and discussions. Congratulations to Natalie Bain, Lachlan Carter, Lucas Gai, Otis Gait, Jason Gong, Ina Guan, Aimee Kang, Audrey Kwok, Aaron Oh, Lauren Rolfe, Gabby Thomas and Elisabella Ty, who were all selected to participate in the course.

Thank you to everyone involved in the running and organisation of this fantastic event.

Year 8 Student Led Conferences

In Week 3, on Wednesday 7 August, parents and carers of students in Yr 8 will have the chance to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers in the student led conferences. These conferences are an excellent opportunity to connect with teachers and gain insight into your child’s strengths and areas for development.

To help students take ownership over this process, during Tutor Time in Week 3, we will spend time planning scripts and question prompts for students to lead these conversations, introducing parents to their teachers and seeking to identify their perceived strengths and weaknesses in the subject. This student led process will help students to take ownership over identifying and addressing where they can improve in their engagement, diligence or behaviour during lessons.

Flashback: End of Term 2 Assembly

Last semester, we had an exciting final Term 2 assembly mc’ed by students Lewis Fitzhenry and Aaron Oh. Josh Freer also impressed us with some wonderful singing, and Georgia Grace provided a beautiful reflection about her and her peers’ experiences over the semester. Congratulations to all these students for the roles they played in the assembly.

We also recognised a range of students in Yr 8 who had achieved top results in their subject assessments over Terms 1 and 2. Students were acknowledged and applauded in the end of Term 2 assembly and will be issued with academic certificates in our Year Assembly on Monday. Congratulations to all those students who put in strong effort and were able to achieve fantastic results in their subjects. We look forward to everyone continuing to work to the best of their ability this term as they seek to continue their academic growth.

Congratulations Otis Gait – Hockey Nationals

After a tough weekend of hockey trials, Otis Gait performed exceptionally well and was selected to represent on the NSW U14s hockey team. This means that he will be competing at Nationals in Perth this October. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement!

It took a lot of hard work to get there, and Otis is very excited to represent NSW. We look forward to seeing how his team progresses!

Academic Assessment Services

On 7 August, Year 8 students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.25am – 12.10pm in Redlands Hall. Students will need to bring a pen and a scientific calculator (not a CAS) to the test. As independent consultants, they specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals include measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will be emailed a copy of the results.

Year 7

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope the break provided a chance for some much-needed rest and relaxation, allowing you to recharge both mentally and physically for the term ahead.

Mr Walker, our Yr 7 Tutors and I have been hearing many wonderful stories from our Yr 7 students about their holidays. Some highlights included overseas travel, catching up with friends, finding new mountain biking tracks, reading a new book, fishing, skiing and snowboarding. I was lucky to head back to Europe these holidays to catch up with family and friends after many years apart. The highlights of our trip were a visit to the Castles of Sintra just outside of Lisbon and walking around the city of Copenhagen taking in the sights before a trip to Tivoli Gardens.

One of the many things I loved about Copenhagen was learning about the concept of HYGGE, which in short means taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about – or even by yourself – to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures. If you are practicing hygge, you are embracing presence over productivity.

New Families

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our three new Yr 7 families joining Redlands this term. We hope you settle in comfortably and quickly become an integral part of our vibrant community. We are excited to get to know you and support your journey here at Redlands.

High Expectations of Year 7 Students in Lessons

Starting off the term with high expectations of behaviour, diligence, and engagement is crucial for Yr 7 students as it sets a positive tone for the entire term. Establishing clear standards helps students understand the importance of respect, responsibility, and active participation in their learning environment. High expectations encourage students to strive for excellence, stay focused on their studies, and contribute positively to the classroom dynamic. This proactive approach not only enhances individual academic success but also fosters a supportive and productive school community where everyone can thrive. By committing to these standards from the beginning, Year 7 students can build strong foundations for their future academic and personal growth.

Yr 7 Student Conferences

On Wednesday 31 July, parents and carers of students in Yr 7 will have the chance to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers.

This conference is an excellent opportunity to connect with teachers and gain insight into your child’s strengths and areas for development. To help students take greater ownership, during Tutor Time we will be creating some sentence starters to assist with the flow of these conversations. We are encouraging students to take the lead in introducing their parents and carers to their teachers and to come up with at least one question to ask each subject teacher about how they can improve either their engagement, diligence or behaviour during lessons.

Further information can be found HERE.

Critical Reasoning Course

Congratulations to the following students Kody Benoliel, Bernice Cheung, James Doree, Ashton Hsiau, Irene Kim, Julian Lundberg, Cleo McLay, Sophia Moriarty, Alma O’Leary, Ginevra Pecora Lauria, Marke Rolfe, Alexia Tsacalos and Ethan Wei who took part in the Critical Reasoning Course this week, which saw Dr Regis and Dr Poon present a workshop on Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development.

Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development outlines how individuals progress through stages of moral reasoning. It includes three levels:

  1. Pre-conventional: Morality is based on avoiding punishment and seeking personal rewards.
  2. Conventional: Morality is based on conforming to social norms and maintaining social order.
  3. Post-conventional: Morality is based on abstract principles and universal ethical values, transcending specific laws and rules.

Our Yr 7 and Yr 8 students did a fantastic job engaging in this session and demonstrated outstanding confidence and cognitive ability when faced with challenging questions and discussions. Thank you to everyone involved in the running and organisation of this fantastic event.

A Message from our Digital Learning Lead (P-6) Joseph Butler
Cyber Safety Workshops

Thank you to David Smith, NSW Education Manager from ySafe, who this week ran a series of Cyber Safety workshops for parents and students. David shared current trends with children and teenagers use of digital and online tools, and detailed some of the potential risks and pitfalls that exist. He also outlined some strategies and support mechanisms for students to use when being online or facing any issue that may arise.

The workshops were a timely reminder of how quickly the online world is developing and that we all need to be safe, sensible and aware when online. Sharing of personal, private information was a main message throughout David’s presentations as well as ensuring we engage in positive communication and behaviours while interacting with others in online places. While there are some tools that support us in being safe online, David reminded us that, just like in the ‘real world’, clear expectations and boundaries, face-to-face discussions and time together are the main defences against online issues.

Online and Digital safety is an ongoing focus at Redlands and we will continue to work on the advice David had for us. The Redlands community also have access to a range of tools and services via PULSE which would encourage everyone to become familiar with.

Of particular note is the ySafe Redlands Cyber Safety Hub which contains curated articles and resources for support parents, students and staff.

The staff look forward to welcoming David back to Redlands in October for a follow up session and to continue ongoing planning for this vital area of support for our community.

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

A message from our Junior Campus Counsellor, Silvia Roberts

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high-stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, I invite you to join me for regular Parents Circles.

The Parents Circles will draw on specific topics and will be centred on providing a space for open discussions and questions. \

The Parents Circles will take place in Week 2 and Week 8 in the Prep Library, after school drop off. We welcome our prep and junior school parents to attend. Please feel free to bring your own coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion, so please book your space here.

The topic for our first session, in Week 2 (Wednesday, 31/07/2024 8.30 am – 9.30 am in Lucy Hill Library) is:

Codependence in Children – Causes, Characteristics and Prevention

  • Codependence in children, if not addressed, can have a significant impact on their lives as they grow into adulthood.
  • What is codependence and what does it look like in a child? What contributes to the development of codependence in children?
  • How can parents prevent the onset of children becoming codependent later on in their lives?
  • Guiding parents through strategies on how to effectively support their children from becoming codependent.

In Week 7 (11/09/24), we will be exploring the topic of Defense Mechanisms

  • Defense mechanisms in children are often adaptive strategies for coping with stress and managing emotions. Understanding these mechanisms can help parents provide appropriate support and guidance to help their children navigate challenges.
  • Distinguishing between defense mechanisms and learning about the roles defense mechanisms play.
  • What defense mechanism do I use as a parent and how does this impact my child?

Exploring healthy coping mechanisms that equip parents to navigate challenging situations more effectively and promote their children’s emotional well-being

I’ve invited you to fill in a form:

Uniform Shop
New Online Ordering System

We are pleased to announce our new online ordering portal has been launched through Flexischools.  The new uniform is now available to purchase along with sports uniforms and accessories.

For students who are already wearing the new uniform and wanting to order additional items,  we suggest checking the size tag on the item to ensure you order the correct size.  You will see the selection size available if you if you need to go up a size.

Our new sizing offers both tailored and relaxed fits in trousers, shorts and shirts.  We recommend students who haven’t had a fitting to come into the shop and try on the new uniform so we can assist with selecting the right size and also explain the guidelines on wearing the new uniform.

Please note once shirts are removed from the packaging, we are unable to exchange these as they cannot be repackaged to sell.  The Uniform Shop has sample sizes available to ensure you purchase the correct size.

We still have some items of the old uniform in various sizes available to purchase directly from the Uniform Shop.  Please call contact us for further information.

A reminder that any order placed before 5pm will be available for collection after 11am the following day (except Tuesdays).

Posters – Student creative challenge

We’ve designed some posters to give you encouragement on the way.  You will see some in PE with messages like: Try your best!  Keep on going!  Have Fun!

But we need more so that we display them all over the school.

If your child would like to make a poster at home, they could paint or design one on the computer. Once they have completed it, please ensure their name and house are included, and hand it to a PE teacher by the 1st August. Every submission will get 10 house points!

We will also be hosting a variety of Olympic based events during PE lessons and lunchtimes next week to really engage in the Olympic celebration.  Keep an eye out for some action shots of these events in next week’s Note Day!

Jeans for Genes Day

Term 3 lunchtime wellbeing clubs will commence next week. These clubs have become an important part of the prep school. All students benefit from an opportunity to try something different, meet new friends and spend time with different staff. Please take the time to share this with your child and perhaps encourage them to give one of them a go. If you have any questions, please email Ms Anderson directly eanderson@bigpond.nsw.edu.au and she will help you.

100 Days of Kindergarten!

A Message from Ms Knox

We are excited to announce that on Monday 29th July we will be celebrating ‘100 Days of Kindergarten!’ This special occasion marks a significant milestone in your child’s learning journey. We have been counting each day of school and will be reflecting on our accomplishments to date.

As part of the celebration, we are inviting each student to bring a collection of 100 items to share with their classmates. This activity not only engages the children in a fun counting exercise but also encourages creativity and resourcefulness as they choose their unique set of 100 objects.

The collection could consist of buttons, stickers, leaves, LEGO bricks, beads, rice, paddle pop sticks or shells. The possibilities are endless, and we encourage you to involve your child in the selection process to make it a personal and enjoyable endeavour. Please assist your child in organising their collection into a secure zip lock bag that is labelled with their name.

On the 100th day of kindergarten, we will gather as a class to showcase and discuss each collection. Children will be encouraged to verbally share what they collected, how they grouped them and to share a way that you could count to 100. We kindly ask that no food is brought in to share with the class. This is to help ensure the safety of our students with food allergies.

Online and Digital safety is an ongoing focus at Redlands, and we will continue to work on the advice David had for us. The Redlands community also have access to a range of tools and services via PULSE which would encourage everyone to become familiar with.

Of note is the ySafe Redlands Cyber Safety Hub which contains curated articles and resources for support parents, students and staff.

The staff look forward to welcoming David back to Redlands in October for a follow up session and to continue ongoing planning for this vital area of support for our community.

Redlands Race Week

How proud we are of our Redlands House and Prep school students who participated in the Redlands Race Week in Thredbo during the holidays.

The week started with Redlands Cup on Sunday in Thredbo. Arwen Fildes (RH), Jemima Joyce (Y1), Saskia Williams (Y1), Kathy Piao (Y1), Eloise Krallis (Y2), Annabel Grinham (Y2), Jonathan Burton (Y2), Liam Huang (Y2), Lucas Lam (Y2), Max Von Konigmark (Y2) and Ethan Huang (K) completed in the GS on Lower Antons.

The ski team of Annabel, Eloise, Jemima and Saskia placed second and Kathy Piao won an individual silver in the snowboard event.

The week then moved to Perisher for the Sydney Snowsports Championships.

The Division 6 students raced in 2 events – Ski Cross and Alpine GS. Competing in these events were Arwen Fildes (RH), Jemima Joyce (Y1), Saskia Williams (Y1), Annabel Grinham (Y2), Jonathan Burton (Y2), Liam Huang (Y2), Lucas Lam (Y2), Max Von Konigmark (Y2) and Lincoln Shirvington (Y1)

Ski Cross was first up, the team of Annabel Grinham, Jemima Joyce and Saskia Williams placed second, earning them a silver medal and a place to compete at the State Championships in August!

The team of Jonathan Burton, Max Von Konigmark and Lincoln Shirvington placed 11th.

In the Alpine GS, Annabel, Jemima, Saskia and Arwen took home the silver, and again scoring a place to compete at the State Championships. Jemima also placed 4th in this event out of 45 competitors!

In the Boys GS, the Redlands A team consisting of Jonathan, Max, Lincoln and Lucas placing 5th earning them a place to compete at the State Championships.

Jemima Joyce and Saskia Williams also competed in the Division 5 Moguls competition, coming a commendable 11th and 17th respectively. As this was a qualifier event, sadly neither made the State Championships.

It has been a fabulous week in snow and all the children who participated should be proud of themselves for not only participating but also learning new skills when it comes to racing and teamwork. Congratulations.

Drama

Tickets are now selling for Away, the 2024 Redlands School Play.  Away by Michael Gow, will be performed by Redlands students at the Zenith Theatre, cnr Mcintosh St and Railway St, Chatswood: 6.30pm Thursday 8 and Friday 9 August and 2pm Saturday 10 August grab your seats here.

Set in 1960s Australia, Away follows three families on holiday, each grappling with personal issues. The play opens with a school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, reflecting themes of love, transformation, and the blurring of illusion and reality. As our characters confront their struggles and grow amidst uniquely Australian coastal and bushland settings, these Shakespearean motifs resonate deeply.
We are proud to present this play and these characters as they reflect our societal growth.

Away transcends class distinctions and xenophobia, demonstrating how understanding and empathy can bring us together. The characters’ journeys towards reconciliation and personal growth mirror our collective progress, making this play a timeless and poignant reflection of our evolving identity.
