Drama and Theatre

This week was an exciting end to the term in the Drama Department, with Year 10 undertaking their Realism Monologue performances. This is almost certainly the most challenging task students undertake in Stages 4 and 5, being required to perform a solo, character-driven piece from Jasper Jones in front of an audience of their peers. Their work, stemming from the methodologies of legendary 20th Century actor trainer Konstantin Stanislavsky and iconic contemporary feminist director Katie Mitchell, relied on embodying an authentic and personal portrayal of their character. Students built their performances on a basis of deep textual research, generated through a detailed, meticulous and rigorous process of investigating the given circumstances of their pieces. This challenging theoretical work culminated in performances that had exhibited conviction, deep belief and beautiful inner life.

Across the entire cohort, students took up the challenge with enthusiasm, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and enacting a diverse set of nuanced, engaging performances. Year 10 can take great pride in their hard work in this unit, and should look forward to using this new set of skills moving forward.
