Community Update

Thank you to the many volunteer parents, carers and friends of Redlands who selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. Your generous contribution and efforts in keeping our community connected, included and informed this term are appreciated and valued. Our community and the School will be celebrated at our Festival of Redlands event to be held in early Term 4 this year. Set in the grounds of the Junior School, this event will shine a light on 140 years of Redlands and include games, sports, arts, drama, music, and refreshments and will also showcase our High Country Campus.

Our postcard series of Redlanders continues this week with Hannah Tobin’s (RL 2021) journey from Redlands to London, via Melbourne. We greatly value the relationships we have with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School and our wider community.  This connection more often than not provides guidance and support, or even just a friendly face in Hannah’s case, as our alumni unite and bond in places near and far. To read Hannah’s postcard along with an update on our upcoming Giving Day, please visit the Foundation section.

Thank you for the encouraging feedback on the launch of our Master Plan this week.  Our Master Plan was developed following significant consultation and engagement across our community, to deliver a shared future vision for a cohesive journey across our three campuses. With our students’ wellbeing at the heart of a holistic Redlands education, our 20-year Master Plan will provide the flexibility to nurture their growth and potential in a rapidly evolving world, allowing their lights to shine brightly.

Building upon our rich 140-year history as innovators and agile movers with the changing educational landscape, the Redlands Master Plan creates the physical spaces necessary for the future of our great School. We are excited to embark on this transformative journey and look forward to sharing further updates as we evolve and realise this visionary plan.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful mid-year break with your family, and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From the Principal

Yesterday we were excited to share our Master Plan for our Junior, Senior and High Country Campuses with our community. Our Master Plan has been in development over the past two years and has taken on broad consultation and input from students, staff and parents to create an exciting vision for facility development over the next twenty years, ensuring our students are able to reach their fullest potential and thrive across their educational journey at Redlands. We look forward to sharing further updates in the months and years ahead as this vision starts to become a reality.

The Master Plan video can be viewed here and further details are available here.

Over the course of this term, we have been liaising with Macquarie University to discuss how we could further strengthen our connections and develop more opportunities for collaboration between our two institutions. As many parents are already aware, Redlands has invested in the development of Macquarie University’s sporting facilities, ensuring we have a high calibre home ground for trainings and fixtures across many of our outdoor sports for years to come. We are now looking at extending this partnership to open up a range of further opportunities for our students in areas such as social enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurial programs; extension and high potential learning opportunities; and microcredential pathways.

As part of this partnership, we are excited to offer a “Start Up Bootcamp” for Secondary School students in Term 3. This cocurricular program will be a collaboration between Redlands and the Macquarie University Incubator and will provide students with an opportunity to experience innovation and entrepreneurial learning approaches and skills through authentic, hands on and real-world environments. Spaces are limited and further information can be found here.

As we come to the halfway point of the year, it is a fitting time to reflect on Semester 1 and the vast array of events and activities which have allowed students to shine in so many different ways so far this year. Just over the past week, I was enthralled by our amazing musicians at the Senior Music Festival (and I also enjoyed an opportunity to sing in the choir on the night – hopefully in tune!); I loved the opportunity to speak to Year 2 students about our High Country Campus and how it is a special place for Redlands; I was impressed by our Year 10 Computing students who showed off their robots playing basketball in Liggins Quad; I enjoyed seeing our Secondary School students compete with a mixture of fun and competitiveness at our Athletics Carnival; and I appreciated seeing our Junior Campus students come together across the year groups for their Buddy Picnic – just to name a few!

After an action packed first half of the year, I wish all students a refreshing and enjoyable break, and I look forward to seeing them return back to campus ready for Semester 2 to commence on Tuesday 23 July.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2024

‘Post Card’ from Hannah Tobin, RL21

After graduating, I pursued a Bachelor of International Studies at RMIT in Melbourne while living at University College. On the first day at College, I recognized two familiar Redlands faces, which made a world of difference and helped confirm that I had made the right decision. Moving states was a daunting and, at times, challenging task, but I was comforted to know I had Redlands alumni with me in Melbourne.

During my time at RMIT, I developed a deep passion for global studies and international relations. Building relationships with my peers and mentors has allowed me to participate in unique learning experiences internationally, such as a two-week study tour to Mumbai earlier this year.

Today, I am an intern at the Australia-UK Chamber of Commerce in London. In this role, I am responsible for member organisation and event logistics, where I have the opportunity to network with professionals in careers that I am interested in. During this position, I coincidentally discovered that the Redlands community extends globally, with the CEO’s sisters being 1972 and 1973 Redlands graduates, back when SCECGS was SCEGGS. This connection piqued the CEOs attention in my initial application and fostered a sense of familiarity, aiding in my selection process.

If I had to give any advice to current Year 12s, it would be to not get caught up in the end goal. Yes, it is important to have goals you want to pursue; however, you also have to enjoy the journey to achieving them. I am in my third and final year of my degree and again faced with those difficult questions of what to pursue next. However, now I know that no matter what I want to pursue, it will be one step at a time.

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

CP Five

Name: Ben Scott
Role: Class Parent 2 Red and curator for small mammals
Kids: James 2R and Charlotte 6W

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?

Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles. Our class parents are always so positive and supportive. Plus, given the weather we’ve had, a few events have been cancelled but we’re always looking past those dark clouds to make sure we can still create fun for the kids and build community spirit for our Redlands families.

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

As a new family to Redlands at the time, I became a Class Parent to meet and get to know other parents in my class. Organising activities is definitely something I enjoy. It’s great to see the kids have so much fun. We’ve also been able to build a very social Year 2 Dads group.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?

Go to as many events organised by Class Parents and the School as you can. All staff and parents are welcoming and it’s a great way to learn about what’s happening at school. It certainly beats trying to read crumpled up notes in my son’s bag or trying to get more than three words from my daughter in the car! I highly recommend being a Class Parent too!

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

I’d definitely want to be part of the Year 2 chicken hatching. It was all that was spoken about for weeks! I would also return the sand we’ve collected over the years to the playground.

The Week in Pictures

As a result of the last minute 7.30am cancellation of the 1sts Hockey game (15 mins after players showed up at Barker for warm up), Hockey parents (and players) had an impromptu coffee to make the drive worthwhile. It’s always good to find the silver linings!

Do you have event pics you want to share? Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Head of Secondary School

Farewell Term 2

Tomorrow we conclude the term with two formal School assemblies; Year 9-11 and Year 7-8. Students host the assemblies, deliver personal reflections and enjoy the musical talents of their peers. They also hear from me and Mr Corcoran and receive Academic Awards for Semester One. Year 12 spend the morning focused on Giving Back to the local community, a School service initiative, and then leave early to ready themselves for the Year 12 Formal – always a glamorous affair.

It’s been a marvellous term, full of events, celebrations, community mindedness and peer support. Year 10 have made some significant decisions about Stage 6 and our current Stage 6 students have been role models for the junior Year Groups. Years 7 and 8 have been great listeners and very much enjoyed the Year 12 Student-led assemblies. Year 9 have been exceptional tour guides, leaning into the wisdom and experiences of Year 10. The students continue to impress me with their self-awareness, kindness and strong communication skills.

Musical Talent

The Senior Music Festival, held last Friday night at The Concourse, Chatswood, was an extraordinary community evening showcasing the talent of our Secondary students. It was certainly a kaleidoscope of joy and our Year 12 Captains were incredible hosts. A huge congratulations to the students and staff involved – it was an amazing experience for the students and a pleasure to watch. The Contemporary Music Maker on Monday evening was also a highlight. Our five Yr 12 IB Higher Level Music students presented their Contemporary Music Maker projects. These student-led projects were the result of collaborations across musical, artistic and logistical domains, designed and executed by our students. The projects ranged from live musical compositions and performances accompanying dramatic monologues, musicals, and short films, tackling complex themes and issues.

Engagement leads to better mental health outcomes

Five Habits for Better Mental Health article by The Educator

The three-week holiday is a much-needed break for our young people. Some may be able to use this time to relax and unwind from a busy term. Others may need to re-set and engage in routines to support their Semester 2 success. Either way, we know that the holiday period affords students an opportunity to practise wellbeing strategies in support of their mental health. Researchers from Macquarie University found that when volunteers stopped engaging in regular activities associated with good mental health, such as talking with friends and exercising, they struggled within a week.

A Macquarie University clinical trial, with the goal of empowering people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression to manage their mental health, led to the development of ‘The Big 5’ – an evidence-based program promoting five types of activities strongly linked to good mental health. We think these would be a supportive focus for all students over the 3-week holiday period.

  • Healthy Thinking: Thinking realistically about oneself, the world, and the future, and treating oneself with respect, especially in difficult situations.
  • Planning for the Future: Engaging in activities that involve planning and preparing for future events or goals.
  • Engaging in Meaningful Activities: Participating in activities that provide a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, or joy.
  • Maintaining Healthy Routines: Establishing and sticking to healthy routines such as cooking and eating healthy meals, having a regular bedtime, and getting regular exercise.
  • Connecting with Friends and Family: Interacting with friends and family at least four times a week.

Senior Music Festival

The Kaleidoscope-themed Senior Music Festival was a celebration of colours, sounds, instruments and student talents showcased last Friday evening at The Concourse. Students from Yrs 7-12 were able to showcase their progress throughout this school year and, for many, this was a culmination of years of experience, practice, hard work and love for their instrument.

Music Captains introduced each act, Yr 12 Music students linked each performance with a musical segway and many highlighted their immense skill in a particular musical number. Jocelyn Wang, featuring on piano, along with the Symphony Orchestra performed Rhapsody in Blue, Sholto Mirrlees-Black shared his Composition Premiere along with the Senior Chamber Ensemble with his piece Iridi, Ahnu Guan and her sister Ina Guan together played the piano to Waltz of the Flowers, Halcyon Hunt took to stage along with Oliver Cooke, Lily Wainberg and the Intermediate Stage Band singing Dancing in the Moonlight and all Year 12 Music students waltzed across the stage in the final performance of the evening to Green Light Medley.  Well done to all students involved in making the event a night to remember and a true celebration of many years of hard work. Thank you to Mr Mathew Owen and the entire Music Department for putting together an incredible evening.

Year 12 Featured Performers: William Andrew, Olivia Everingham, Harry Fenton, Tara Gold, Rafferty Heard, Will Howard, Halcyon Hunt, Jack Keogh, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Henry Moate, Christopher Szeto, Scarlett Thorp, Lara Wilson and Kabir Yohannan.

A special thank you and shout-out to our multi-talented Assistant Year 12 Advisor, Katharine Boase, who choreographed the performances for the event and who has worked closely with all Music students throughout their time in the Secondary School.

Giving Back

On the morning of the final day of Term 2, all Year 12 students will engage via the Year 12 “Give Back” Service program. Promoting our Values of empathy, compassion and kindness, students will participate in a range of activities, giving back and giving thanks to the Redlands and local Cremorne communities. More detailed information on the service options has been shared with students and they have put through their preference of service activity in preparation for Friday’s event.

Students will hear from key staff and executive about the meaning of Service and how important this day is for them to experience giving back to others wholeheartedly and selflessly, to recognise their contribution to the Redlands community and to appreciate the time and attention others have given to them throughout their years at Redlands.

Please note that most service activities are on campus. However, if students choose the community rubbish clean-up option or the Neutral Bay Community Centre option, these will require students to leave campus for their activity with a Redlands staff member. If there are any concerns regarding your child engaging in these two options in particular, please respond by email to aynson@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Yr 12 Friday Schedule

  • P1 – regular time-tabled classes
  • P2 – Redlands Hall for Give Back Assembly
  • 10:00am Quick Recess/Transition and move to Service Activity

  • 12:30pm – Student Dismissal (students make own way home)
  • 7.00pm – Year 12 Redlands Formal at Shangri-La

Time has been given back to students from 12:30pm to prepare for their evening at Yr 12 Formal. Several students have been involved in the Formal Planning Committee. Their time, attention and discussion with the cohort to ensure Friday’s program is inclusive and celebratory for all involved has been invaluable and we look forward to a wonderful evening.

Year 11

Athletics Carnival

Yr 11 students attended the Athletics Carnival with boundless enthusiasm, showcasing high levels of participation in various events. Their wonderful House spirit was evident as they cheered on their peers. The camaraderie among the students was unmistakeable, encouraging one another and celebrating every achievement, big or small. This collective energy and support created an unforgettable atmosphere, highlighting the unity and pride within the Yr 11 cohort.

Final Week of Term

As we approach the final day of the term, we want to encourage everyone to stay focused and finish strong. Here are a few important reminders to help us all maintain our high standards and ensure a smooth end to the term.

Uniform Reminder: Stay Smart and Warm

With the weather getting colder, it’s important to make sure our uniform standards don’t slip. Students should wear their blazers and navy school woollen jumpers to stay warm. Please remember that fleeces are not part of our uniform. Looking smart helps us feel smart and ready to tackle the last days of the term with pride.

All students are required to wear their Blazer to the End of Term Assembly of the final day of term, Friday 28 June.

Respecting Our Community: After-School Guidelines

We love seeing our students socialising and enjoying time together after school. However, due to end-of-term fatigue and a natural drop in self-management, we ask that social activities take place in the comfort and safety of someone’s home under parental supervision. This helps everyone stay safe and respectful of our community. Please note that students will not be allowed to visit local shops after school during the final week of the term.

StartUp Bootcamp Extracurricular (Years 7-11)

Do you have a business idea that you’d like to explore? Are you curious about entrepreneurship? We have the perfect extracurricular opportunity for you in Term 3!

Year 10

Community leaders Workshop on Cohesion – Student reflection by Genevieve Holt

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Kylea Tink’s workshop on Thursday 13 June. I had an enlightening and enjoyable time, speaking with community leaders from around our electorate, including a Minister, Principal and CEO to name a few! Presenters from ‘Together For Humanity’ spoke on the concept of being an “upstander” and the science behind stereotypes. Typically, their courses are run in schools, much of which I think could be really beneficial for Redlands. To top of the night, I even got a photo with the woman herself, Kylea Tink!

Overall, the evening was an amazing and rare chance for an insight into the workings of our leaders!

Athletics Carnival

Well done to the Yr 10 students who attended the Athletics Carnival with excitement and enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see such good participation in a range of events. A special highlight was watching the Yr 10 girls cheer on their peer, Le Shyan Chua, as she achieved an impressive javelin throw. The Yr 10 boys also added humour to the day by hyping each other up to jump over the very tall high jump bar. Throughout the day, Yr 10 demonstrated House spirit as part of the wider Redlands community, ensuring they cheered on their peers no matter how big or small the success.

StartUp Bootcamp Extracurricular (Years 7-11)

Do you have a business idea that you’d like to explore? Are you curious about entrepreneurship? We have the perfect extracurricular opportunity for you in Term 3!

Year 9

End of Term

As we come to the completion of Term 2, Ms Barr and I wish all of you a safe and relaxing break.

We both feel that we have had a very successful term as a cohort and our Year 9 students have set a high standard for themselves to follow through for the remainder of the year.

With both Student-Led Conferences and the publishing of reports this week, students will be receiving a lot of feedback on their progress academically and on the effort that they are putting into their learning. I encourage you to take some time with your child over the break and reflect on what’s been communicated and discuss some of the small habit-based changes that could be implemented in Semester 2. I would emphasise that a small change, such as recording key vocabulary from each lesson daily during Home Learning, is more practical than a complete overhaul of all systems and approaches.

Secondary School Athletics Carnival

I cannot speak highly enough of Year 9s participation in the Secondary School Athletics Carnival on Tuesday this week. They enjoyed the perfect weather and relished in the opportunity to run, jump, throw and cheer one another on.

SEED Program (Yrs 8 & 9)

The catch is, the afternoon sessions are on a Thursday, so if you have Sport training then you won’t be able to participate. Please check your Term 3 schedule.

It is an innovative social enterprise initiative that empowers students to develop enterprising skills while addressing real-world environmental and social issues.

Over the course of approximately 30 hours spanning 16 weeks, students will move through an immersive design thinking process, collaborating with others to creatively solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Culminating in a showcase event held at Taronga Zoo, participants will be able to share their ideas for the chance to win exciting prizes.

Key dates:

  • SEED Launch day – Thursday 1 August
  • Fortnightly workshops – Thursdays 3.30pm-5pm

Year 8

Sun, Fun and Run, Run, Run – it’s the SS Athletics Carnival!

It has been a jam-packed Term 2 and everyone is looking forward to their upcoming mid-year break. After completing some busy assessment schedules, Yr 8 students have had a positive air about them and this was no more apparent than at the recent Secondary School Athletics Carnival.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the final week of term, everyone was able to bring their boundless energy, enthusiasm and good cheer to the Carnival on Tuesday. And my, didn’t the weather show up as well?! It was a gorgeous day of sunshine, friendly competition and fun. Yr 8 put on an excellent showing across the day, engaging with good spirit in event after event from 100m sprints to 1500m endurance races, and also field events like javelin, high jump, shot put and long jump. The students were so involved, they even encouraged this Year Advisor to get amongst things as well – and if you look closely through the photos below, you might find a few depicting a slightly older person having fun, giving the Athletics events a red hot crack!

I was impressed not only with the participation of students on the day but also their support of their peers. It was wonderful to see everyone giving it a go and supporting their mates from the sideline (even when on crutches!)

Subject Selections for Year 9

On Wednesday, Ms Rolon (Dean of Studies 7-10) spoke to the cohort about elective selections for their Year 9 study. A lot of useful information was communicated to students to help them with their elective selections for 2025. You can find all the details Ms Rolon covered posted on Pulse.

Moonbah Term Selection

A quick reminder that the Moonbah term selections for 2025 need to completed by this Friday 28 June. Full information on the Moonbah program for 2025, including a link to the term nomination form is accessible through Pulse.

Senior Music Festival – Congratulations

Last Friday, Redlands held the Senior Music Festival, the theme this year being Kaleidoscope. The evening was a celebration of colours, sounds, instruments and student talent at The Concourse in Chatswood. Students from Yrs 7-12 were able to showcase their progress throughout this school year performing in ensembles and individually. Over 50 Yr 8 students worked hard towards preparing for the event this year for over two terms. The confidence and skill on display was a dedication to the hard work, commitment and love for their instrument. Well done to all students involved in making the event an exciting and entertaining night to remember. Thank you also to our resident Yr 8RR Tutor and Director of Music Performance (P-12), Mr Mathew Owen, and the entire Music Department for putting together an incredible evening.

Uniform Reminder: Stay Smart and Warm!

With the weather getting colder, it is important to make sure our uniform standards don’t slip. A reminder that the blazer is a compulsory part of the Term 2 and 3 uniform. It should be worn to and from school. If students are cold (and we have had some chilly days!), they should wear their blazers and navy school woollen jumpers to stay warm. Please remember that fleeces are not part of our uniform. Looking smart helps us feel smart and ready to tackle the challenges of school with confidence and pride.

Importantly, all students are required to wear their blazer to the End of Term Assembly on the final day of term, Friday 28 June.

Best Wishes for a Lovely Mid-Year Break

Ms Wang and I want to wish all families a wonderful midyear break. Whether you are travelling interstate or overseas, or just hanging out at home, we hope the holiday period offers you and your charges important time to relax, recharge and reconnect with family and friends. We look forward to seeing all our students bright eyed and bushy tailed and ready to tackle Term 3 when the term commences on Tuesday 23 July.

Athletics Carnival

What a fantastic day! The Secondary School Athletics Carnival is a significant event in the calendar and brings each House together. This carnival always fosters an incredible sense of Redlands community, teamwork and school spirit.

Well done to everyone who participated in these events from Sprints to Javelin and Long Jump. All students had the opportunity to showcase their sporting abilities and experience the thrill of competition in a supportive environment. Beyond the physical benefits, an athletics carnival helps build resilience, perseverance and a positive attitude toward challenges. It also provides a platform for students to interact across different age groups and cultural backgrounds, enhancing social skills and fostering inclusivity. Overall, the Athletics Carnival is a celebration of effort, determination and camaraderie, contributing to the holistic development of students.

Well done to everyone involved in the organising, running and participation in this event.

Hot Chocolate – Chat and Connect

Last Friday Cowper and Roseby had the opportunity to connect on the Roof Top Garden and share a Hot Chocolate together. It was so nice for all the students to have some time together outside of the classroom.

Wayside Collection: – A Message from the Junior School Captains

Amelie and Pax

This year as School Captains and a Year 6 cohort, we want to help Wayside Chapel. Wayside needs donations of money and goods. As well as money, Wayside needs donations of single use toiletries which are provided for people who come in to have showers, brush their teeth and get changed into some clean clothes. As we did at the start of this term, we would like to gather single-use toiletries for Wayside Chapel. Given the school holidays are approaching, we thought this would be a perfect time to ask students and their families to collect these items from hotels and aeroplanes, if they are going away during the school holidays; please keep an eye out for these items on the list on the below flyer.  When you come back to school, there will be a large bucket that you can place the toiletries in so that we can pass this on to Wayside Chapel.

ySafe Parent and Student Cyber Safety Sessions

Head of Preparatory School

As Term 2 draws to a close I would like to thank our Preparatory School community for your continued support, enthusiasm and encouragement of our students and our staff. This community support and engagement is so very important in building and maintaining the special culture that we enjoy every day. A big thank you Ms Wales, Mrs Mast and Mrs Thomas who have come in every week to take lunchtime Wellbeing Clubs. The children have loved your art and story reading. The time that you have so generously given us is very much appreciated.

I know you all join me is thanking our teachers for yet another term of engaging learning. The key to early years as we always say, is to build strong foundations as this leads to courageous inquirers who look for connections in learning as well embracing new skills and knowledge.

After reading the K-2 reports last week, I am so excited for our families to read about their children and to see the progress made so far this year while being guided as to their next steps in their learning. As Mrs Anagnostu shared in her parent webinar, reports are to be viewed as a snapshot in time and provide families with a guide as to where children are at in their learning but more importantly, what will the next steps be for children as the year progresses. I encourage parents to come to our Term 3, Week 2 Learning Conversations with questions based on this report and also based on next steps so that an understanding of progression is shared and understood.

As I wrap up our last Note Day for the term, I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday period and we look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 23 July.

The Moonbah Program which will commence for Year 9 in 2025, promises to be a transformative immersive educational experience for our students who will benefit academically, pastorally and socially from their involvement.

Significant research has gone into the preparation of our program, including comprehensive reviews of similar programs at other independent schools with residential programs with site visits to many of these schools in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia by key staff. In addition, the School has drawn on academic research on residential experiential learning, immersive and outdoor education programs which have found positive impacts on students’ wellbeing, relationships, self-confidence, resilience, engagement with learning and achievement.

There were a number of fantastic performances which will all be recognised in the School Assembly early next term. A huge thank you to the staff and students for their involvement throughout the day, whether that be running, jumping or throwing there were a number of students who were measuring, raking and assisting with the events.

A reminder that there are a number of holiday sessions for sports over the next 3 weeks, students need to register for these events through the following link Redlands Sport – Term 2 Holiday Sessions (Tennis details are outlined under the tennis section below). We ask that students and parents check their emails throughout the break to ensure they are aware of any changes to the schedule.

We are pleased to announce that Winter Penney (Yr 12) has taken on the role of Snowsports (Ski) Captain for the upcoming Snowsports Season. Winter has been heavily involved with an range of ski disciplines in her time at Redlands, we are looking forward to Winter working with Felicity Schlederer (Snowboard Captain) for the upcoming season.

We are all wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break.  Sport will resume with training on Tuesday 23 July (Term 3, Day 1), sessions will be loaded into student calendars over the holidays.

‘One of life’s counterintuitive lessons is that you will often gain energy by spending a little bit of energy. When you feel lethargic and like you want to lay around all day, it is usually the case that getting up and moving will make you feel better than simply sitting around. Getting outside for 10 minutes or doing the first set of a workout or simply stretching on the floor for a moment – anything to get your body moving – will often leave you feeling more energised. If you want to get your day going, then get your body going. it’s harder for the mind to be sluggish when the body is moving’

James Clear (inspired by a recent conversation with Morgan Housel.)

Football

ISA Football Round 7

In a cool and wet morning, our Redlands Boys faced the tough round of games vs St Patrick’s College at our brand-new synthetic ground at Macquarie University.

We are most grateful to have high quality fields as most games around Sydney were called off. The Redlands boys tried hard and keep improving week by week.  We are working very hard to maintain our style of play right through the game. Good to hear most of the results improved from Round 1 vs St Patricks.  Congratulations to Coach Ruddy Franco and the Second XI boys who had a great draw against Central Coast Grammar.

The Girls Program had just one game called off due to the weather. First XI Girls, Junior A Girls and Junior B Girls all travelled to Oxley. Even though it wasn’t raining it was very cold and a little windy. The girls were magnificent and performed well bringing home 3 wins out of 3 games.

Important news

  • Football Holiday Programs have been sent to everyone please enrol as soon as possible.
  • Invitation game for the Junior A Girls 1pm on 22 July 2024 vs Abbotsleigh School.
  • Training for all the teams will start first day back on 23 July
  • The ISA competition will re-start with Round 8 on Saturday 27 July
  • Check new action pictures on Pulse of the first 7 rounds of Football.

Have a great break and holidays!

Hockey

Round 7 Hockey was unfortunately a wash-out for all teams at Barker. The 1st Girls arrived at the field optimistic about playing against Barker 1st but the field wasn’t able to sustain the heavy downpours.

All teams go into the holiday break well placed and looking forward to returning first day back next term on Tuesday 23 July. We will be running two holiday training sessions for all teams:

Rugby

Round 2 ISA Wrap up:

In traditional rugby conditions on Saturday, our BaBa’s teams took to the field against a very strong St Augustine’s sides. Throughout the day we witness some great developments within our teams with amazing sportsmanship and efforts until the final whistle.

As a coaching group, we are incredibly proud of the fight shown against Auggies. We look forward to the remaining ISA fixtures on the other side of holidays!

Rep Winter Sport

Unfortunately, the rain and wild weather played havoc with our Saturday Rep Sport once again last weekend. Only those matches scheduled to play on our Redlands Synthetic Oval were able to proceed which saw Year 3, 4 and 6 teams play in wet conditions in their last game of this season. The Football and Rugby teams in Term 3 will have their final 3 weeks of their regular season from Week 1 onwards.

The Redlands App caused some delays to families but after a review by the IT team this week we can confirm that our Redlands App was not the issue but rather clipboard (program that supplied data for schools fixtures) that got overloaded by the volume of requests from all schools logging in around the same time (6am – 8am), leading to failures. We were able to get an email out to all families with updates. Please note this type of email will only happen in rare situations like this, for all other cancellations we revert to automatic notifications through the Redlands App as our staff are out of the office.

Unfortunately for our Netball and Hockey teams their final round of their season was another cancellation. It is such a shame that some of our teams have only played two matches this season due to wet weather. Congratulations to those students who competed at various NSW Athletics events over the weekend in the wet and wild conditions.

Snowsports

Good luck to all our Junior School students who are involved in our Snowsports program in the upcoming school holidays. For more information about what is on offer, please refer to the link here Redlands Snow Sports and for any questions please reach out to Danielle Steer dsteer@redlands.nsw.edu.au who is our director of Snowsports.

Term 3 Redlands Mini-Olympics

When our Rep Rugby and Football season finishes their season on Saturday 10 August, all students from these teams will be automatically rolled over and enrolled to compete in Redlands Mini Olympics for the remainder of the term. Students from both codes have been divided into 8 countries and will play each other each Wednesday in a variety of Athletic events. Teams are mixed grades and each team has been allocated a country that they are representing.  Teams were displayed at school and the students are very excited about the event. For your reference these can be viewed here: 2024 Redlands Olympics

Athletics Holiday Training Program ‘Student Take Home Pack’

I have put together a training plan aimed at those students who would not normally train leading up to our Junior Athletics Carnival which is scheduled for Wednesday 14 August. As you know training for Athletics and Cross Country takes place well in advance of the carnival itself.

You are under no obligation to use this training plan, it is a suggested resource we have put together for those families who want to work on carnival preparation over the upcoming school holidays and for the weeks leading up to our school carnival.

To download and or view this training it can be found under ‘Files’ on Pulse on the Athletics Page.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

This week was an exciting end to the term in the Drama Department, with Year 10 undertaking their Realism Monologue performances. This is almost certainly the most challenging task students undertake in Stages 4 and 5, being required to perform a solo, character-driven piece from Jasper Jones in front of an audience of their peers. Their work, stemming from the methodologies of legendary 20th Century actor trainer Konstantin Stanislavsky and iconic contemporary feminist director Katie Mitchell, relied on embodying an authentic and personal portrayal of their character. Students built their performances on a basis of deep textual research, generated through a detailed, meticulous and rigorous process of investigating the given circumstances of their pieces. This challenging theoretical work culminated in performances that had exhibited conviction, deep belief and beautiful inner life.

Across the entire cohort, students took up the challenge with enthusiasm, pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and enacting a diverse set of nuanced, engaging performances. Year 10 can take great pride in their hard work in this unit, and should look forward to using this new set of skills moving forward.

Please note, Drama and Theatre Extra-Curricular Program Classes will start up after the holiday break in Week 2.

Senior Music Festival

The Senior Music Festival on Friday evening was a roaring success and we are grateful to all those in our community who joined us for the fun! The show was made possible by 220 beaming performers, our graduating class as hosts with the most, and 30 staff and Friends of Music who jumped on board the creative vision to make it the memorable night it was!

Yr 12 IB Contemporary Music Maker

On Monday night, five Yr 12 IB Higher Level Music students presented their Contemporary Music Maker projects. These student-led projects were the result of collaborations across musical, artistic and logistical domains, designed and executed by our students. The projects ranged from live musical compositions and performances accompanying dramatic monologues, musicals, and short films tackling complex themes and issues.

We’re proud of our five IB students who put in countless hours to make these passion projects a reality, as well as all of their student collaborators!

Senior Piano Competition Auditions – due tomorrow!

We’re delighted to announce that we will be joined by Daniel Rojas as our adjudicator for both the Junior and Senior events.

Daniel Rojas is a South American born Australian concert pianist and composer who specialises in the rich and vibrant Latin American musical aesthetic. Rojas brings together music from diverse indigenous, folk and popular Latin American traditions and rearranges them for the concert stage. Seminal classical works by Latin American composers also play a significant part of his repertoire. He performs his own compositions, which include solo piano works and two piano concertos, and blends this with his sophisticated abilities to improvise live on stage.

The last chance to upload auditions for Senior Piano Competition is tomorrow! Don’t miss out on this wonderful performance opportunity.
