Year 12 Legacy Gift: Our Gift, Our Legacy
It has been an exciting journey with the Year 12 Legacy Gift team working through ideas, concepts and fundraising initiatives. This year’s student-led initiative is focusing on the importance of ‘Giving Back’ to the School. It is wonderful to see students working collaboratively and with a passion to continue this tradition which was started by the Class of 2016.
This year, funds raised will be contributed to the sixth Redlands Means-tested Scholarship named after Redlander Coralie Amos OAM, Class of 1964. For all her efforts and commitment to Service, Coralie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

Please join Year 12 in their efforts!
Students are inviting the entire Redlands community to support them in their fundraising efforts. They appreciate your support as they come to the end of their Redlands journey by purchasing one, or more, of our special commemorative 2024 drink bottles, Redlands Rhino key chains and greeting cards, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.
If you make a purchase, products will be available next Term (July/August) either delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post for an extra charge.

Alternatively you can make a tax deductible donation to the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship.

Student Presentation: Man Cave
This week, our cohort identifying as he/him, participated in a Man Cave workshop, building on their first workshop with the program in Yr 10.
Man Cave is a group dedicated to preventative mental health and emotional intelligence to support boys in becoming great men. They exist because the leading cause of death among young men ages 15-44 is suicide. Man Cave believes these statistics are preventable as every young man should have healthy relationships, contribute to their community and should be supported to reach their full potential.
Yr 12 leaned into this opportunity and fully embraced the session. Students were challenged to practice being vulnerable, sharing with others and listening to others to support one another.
Please visit the link below with resources on how to support your son with ongoing conversations after he experiences the Man Cave.

How can I support my boy after the program?
We suggest going gently with your son after the program. It’s likely he will take a few days to make sense of and integrate the experience with us. Keep in the mind the following:
- Ask questions, be curious but don’t push him too much
- Give him time and space to share
- Understand he is now shifting his relationships to his peers. Don’t take it the wrong way if he doesn’t want to share with you
- Knowing he can talk with you about anything, without ramifications (psychological safety), will be plenty for him, for now
The HSC and IB Question and Answer
Today, we had two Year 12 High Performers, Nathan Barrie (HSC) and Daisy Thomas (IB), speak to the Year 10 Elite Athletes and Performers in a Year 12 HSC/IB Q&A session about their reasons for choosing the HSC or IB pathway. This session also provided an opportunity for Year 10 students to ask questions about the programs.
Freestyle skier Daisy, who came 2nd in the Youth Olympics for ‘Big Air,’ shared why the IB was appealing to her, highlighting the course structure and the global perspective the IB program offers. Nathan Barrie, who was just signed with the Western Sydney Wanderers, discussed the academic support he received from Lucy Benjamin and his teachers, which helped him keep up with his work despite the demands of his football and training commitments.
Year 10 students asked questions about the differences between each program, course structures, and how Daisy and Nathan managed their time effectively with their HSC and IB studies. There was also a key focus on career backups, with both Daisy and Nathan discussing their career pathways and the guidance they received from the Redlands Career Advisors Justine Fowler and Claire Hurst.
We hope this session has provided valuable insights and guidance for our Year 10 students as they consider their own academic and career pathways.

Yr 12 Students Teaching Classes
As an additional fundraiser for Festival in the Fahl, Yr 12 students were able to donate toward the cause by “purchasing a class to teach” of one of their teachers. Most students worked with their teachers to organise a lesson for Yr 7 or Yr 8 and a few Yr 12 students even ran a class debate with Yr 11 students!
Please see some reflections from Yr 12 students, Eva Osborn and Jack Keogh, from their class take over with Ms Xue.
Reflections
Eva Osborn
Our year 12 Chinese class all decided to sign up to teach the Year 7 class as we thought it would be a fun experience and a good way to step into Ms Xue’s shoes. In our lesson, we went over basic family members, teaching them how to say things like mum, dad, younger brother, grandma, etc. However, my favourite part of the lesson was when we were divided into groups and the Year 7 students competed to guess which family member on the slide presentation was related to which Year 12. Everyone became a little competitive, and although my group didn’t win, we certainly had the most spirit! The class was so enthusiastic and full of energy that we all had the best time! Through this experience, I learned not only how far we have come with our Chinese since Year 7, but also the energy and effort it takes to run an engaging and informative lesson. If you are given the opportunity, I would definitely recommend teaching a younger class!
Jack Keogh
When I heard part of the Festival in the Fahl fundraiser included the chance for groups of Year 12’s to ‘buy’ younger classes for a period, I was surprised it hadn’t been done before as it is such a good idea to raise money, create links between year groups and have fun. Our whole Year 12 Chinese class (all 12 of us) decided to take Ms Xue’s Year 7 Chinese class for a period, a class many of us were in back in 2019. The surprise of the Year 7s as they walked into a class full of Year 12 students (only Year 12 and teachers knew it was happening) quickly led to fierce (and loud) competition as they showed off their Chinese knowledge of stationary, family and guessing the Year 12s family member photo for points and lollies. Planning and running just a single period definitely gave us an appreciation of how hard it is for Ms Xue and all teachers to keep learning on track for a whole year but overall the junior and senior students were all laughing together and it was a great Monday Period 1 to start the week.
Student Congratulations
Congratulations to Nathan Barrie for signing a three year scholarship contract with the Wanderers! This is a fantastic opportunity for Nathan and he is very excited to play as much as he can and make the most of this experience over the next three years. See an excerpt from the Wanderers article below:
The 18-year-old joined the Wanderers Academy under 18s squad two seasons ago and has worked his way up through the ranks to the Isuzu UTE A-League team.

Redlands ISA at the CIS crsChampionships
Today, 24 students represented Redlands/ISA at the CIS Cross Country Championships held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Despite the muddy and tough conditions, it was fantastic to see our students putting so much effort into their runs today.
Yr 12 Highlights from today include:
- Isaac Brooks finished 6th in the 18 Years 8k, qualifying for the NSW All Schools.
Well done to all our students for their outstanding performance and sportsmanship!

Student Presentation: Paul Dillon
This week, the entire cohort engaged in a 1.5-hour session with Paul Dillon on drugs and alcohol awareness. Students received updated information about making smart decisions and avoiding drink driving, how to have a safe and celebratory 18th birthday as well as the impacts of various drugs on the human body, especially at their age. Thank you for your support from home. Please see parent resources to support in these ongoing conversations:
