Secondary Sport

As we move towards Round 1 of winter sport starting this weekend it has been great to see teams taking shape with training progressing well! Being a reliable and consistent teammate is crucial for teenagers in school sport for a number of key reasons:

  • It fosters trust and camaraderie among team members, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and respected, this in itself can enhance motivation and morale, leading to improved performance on and off the court.
  • Contributes to the team’s overall effectiveness and performance. When teammates can depend on each other to fulfill their roles consistently it minimises disruptions and maximises efficiency during practice and games, this will enhance team success and promote accountability and responsibility.
  • Being reliable and consistent helps teenagers develop important life skills such as time management, discipline and commitment. When teammates by into the responsibilities and show up consistently they learn the importance of honouring commitments and persevering through challenges.

Within all our sport programs, a key value is responsibility, being a reliable teammate sets a positive example for others and can inspire teamwork and unity among peers. When everyone is committed to the team’s goals and supports each other consistently, the collective effort becomes greater than the sum of its parts, leading to a more fulfilling and rewarding experience for all involved.

‘Your competition isn’t someone else. Your competition is the attitude, habits, discipline & choices you make on a daily basis’

Staff Update – Renae Garlepp (Director of Basketball)

We have been very fortunate to have Renae working within the Redlands community for nearly a decade. Renae began working within the Fitness Centre and doing some Basketball coaching having finished her Professional Playing career. Renae has then developed the School’s basketball program as the Director of Basketball since 2017 whilst also paving her way with numerous Representative and State Pathway coaching roles. More recently Renae was fortunate to take on a role as the Assistant Coach with the Sydney Flames in the 2023/24 WNBL Season. With a fantastic first season Renae has been offered an extension with the Flames as such she has informed us that she will finish up with Redlands. We would like to thank Renae for her outstanding contributions within the Redlands community. With a prestigious history as both a player and now coach, we wish Renae all the best as she departs her role at Redlands to re-join the Sydney Flames for their upcoming season!  Congrats and all the best Renae – Go the Flames!

Congratulations to Annabelle Hwang (Yr 11) who over the April school holidays, competed at EA State Interschool Championships with record number of entries this year, representing Redlands, over 5 full days covering from dressage to show jumping with her two lovely horses, Annie and Squid.

Squid joined Annabelle since late February 2024. This pair had less than two months to train together and got qualified to enter most competitive secondary classes.

Despite very minimal time together, Annabelle and Squid managed to be qualified to enter Secondary Senior Preliminary dressage championship class after the first round of dressage class. Then they went for show jumping class with superb 90cm show jumping rounds, grabbing 6th place ribbon in one of the round, and overall 7th place in the Secondary Senior class.

Annie also has managed to run beautiful dressage class, in the combined training, coming 8th in dressage, even though Annie has been off work for over 6 months.

Rugby

We also ask that players and parents check the Pulse page & Rugby news notifications for weekly updates and important information.

Goal for the week:

Following our pre season block for training in Term 1, our program focus is to have strong basic skills so that when we bring the schools together we can introduce more structured and technical rugby.

This weekend we want to see each player control their controllable, taking ownership of the 1 ‘percenters’ that make up the game.

This week will act as a building block as we get some games under our belt ahead of ISA fixtures kicking off in week 5.

Trainer of the week:

The following players should be congratulated on their efforts over the holiday and earlier this week.

These players demonstrated commitment to the team in training. We will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week.

  • Liam Donnelly
  • Seb Okhovat

We had great attendance at the Training Camps in Week 2 of the holidays with many great matches played – there will be plenty more training sessions and match play each school holiday.

Can you please ensure you are on time for training and put in 100% effort to get ready for the Winter Comp which starts this Saturday.

Let’s get off to a great start for the Winter Tennis Season!

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session or match.

Trainer of the week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and strong performance in games.

Focus for the week: Following our pre-season training last term, we are focusing on having a good understanding of the game and general skills and movements. This week in games, we will be looking for players ensuring they get their body out of the water and arms in the correct position to ensure efficiency and power when passing and shooting. Along with watching players are looking around the pool for their teammates to pass to, to build effective team work.

Congratulations to Olive Ross-Sampson who along with her Balmain Tigers teammates finished Runner Up in the State Championships in April.
