The Academy sprang into action on Sunday 28 April with Sophie Holloway and Maddy Bowyer holding Jazz Performance Group Intensive Rehearsals, where much progress was made on the competition pieces that are due to hit the stage this term. We are absolutely thrilled by the incredible standard of the dancing this year and are excited to have the opportunity to showcase the work at the Anzac Village RSL Aged Care Facility on Saturday 18 May.
During the holidays six of our elite ballet dancers had four days of intensive classes and rehearsals with Head of Academy Gilly Revie, prior to participating in the AICD and the Asian Grand Prix.
At the AICD Juliet Whelan performed the challenging role of the Sugar Plum Fairy for the first time en pointe, Abigail Korbel was the Bluebird, Meg Ishii danced the solo from the Pas de six, Giselle and Hannah Scott Prelude from Les Sylphides. Ady Lee and Irene Kim both performed their Eisteddfod solos and achieved Highly Commended Awards.
At the AGP the students completed a ballet class taught by Vicki Attard which was observed by judges, parents and teachers. The following day they took to the UNSW Science Theatre stage to perform their repertoire solos. The standard was high throughout, but it was clear that the technical proficiency, pure classical form and artistic quality shone through in each of the RDA students. Congratulations to Abigail for her beautiful Bluebird, Juliet’s Paquita solo strong and accomplished, and Meg’s natural and energetic Giselle Pas de six. Hannah secured the much-deserved Encouragement prize for her sparkling Crystal Fairy, and Irene came away with the Silver Prize for her impeccable Bluebird which puts her through to the finals in Thailand. All these solos will be performed at our in-house Solo Soirée in Redlands Hall on 3 August.
A huge thanks to our wonderful ballet teachers who coached these talented dancers to such a high standard during term.

Johan Inger’s award-winning production of Carmen is an exhilarating journey that thrusts Georges Bizet’s 19th-century opera into the modern world with a breathtaking display of athleticism and passion.
