Secondary Sport
We are extremely fortunate to have Ms Mia Lundquist in our Fitness Centre as the Director of Strength & Conditioning. Over the last (nearly) 12 months, Mia has implemented and number of changes within the space to develop all athletes at Redlands, developing some key focus areas to work with sports and the development of athletes.
- Injury Prevention: Strengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments can help prevent injuries by improving overall body mechanics and stability. Conditioning exercises also enhance flexibility and mobility, reducing the risk of strains and sprains during athletic activities.
- Performance Enhancement: Building strength and endurance directly contributes to improved performance in sports. Enhanced muscular power and explosiveness can lead to faster sprint times, higher jumps and more powerful hits or throws. Additionally, better aerobic and anaerobic conditioning can help athletes sustain high-intensity efforts for longer durations, leading to better overall performance during competitions.
- Optimised Skill Execution: Strength and conditioning training can enhance an athlete’s ability to execute technical skills more effectively. For example, a soccer player with greater lower body strength may have more power and accuracy in their kicks, while a basketball player with better core stability might improve their shooting accuracy and balance.
- Mental Toughness: Endurance training, such as running or cycling, not only builds physical stamina but also mental resilience. Athletes who undergo rigorous conditioning are better equipped to handle the mental challenges of competition, such as fatigue, pressure and adversity.
- Recovery and Rehabilitation: Incorporating strength and conditioning exercises into training programs can aid in the recovery from injuries and help prevent future re-injuries. Targeted exercises can strengthen weak areas, improve joint stability and restore range of motion, facilitating the rehabilitation process.
We are incorporating a Strength & Conditioning session for each of the 1st teams this season, and this is encouraged for all students (not just those in the 1st teams). There is more information in the Note Day below on how to register for the Fitness Centre sessions.

ISA Strategic Review of Sport
As part of the ISA (Independent Sporting Association) Strategic Review of Sport, the ISA has engaged an independent consultant to prepare a survey covering themes such as your satisfaction, expectations, and sentiment toward various elements of ISA, with key demographic questions also included. Students will also be surveyed. The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous. Parent and carer feedback is valued by the ISA and will be used to guide ISA into the future. Below are the survey links. Please note the survey will close at 4pm Friday 12 April.

Football
Football capitalised on the gathering of its cohort for trial games last Saturday by holding its season launch event on the new astroturf Northern Fields at Macquarie University.
Gerry Gomez, Football Director, announced the addition of four more teams to the program this year due to the sport’s growing popularity. He noted that the outstanding performance of the First XI Boys at the CIS Plate on Friday (winning 8-1) sets a promising tone for what looks to be a fantastic season ahead!
Captains Hannah Garde and Liam McFarlane delivered a heartfelt speech emphasising the significance of unity within the squad before announcing the selected players for the Boys and Girls 2nds teams.
Gerry, along with Assistant Head of Sport (Coach and Student Development) Graham Nes, had the honour of presenting the First XI Girls and Boys with their jerseys. Mr Nes remarked on the intense competition for spots in the Firsts, acknowledging the commendable dedication and skill demonstrated by all players throughout the selection process.
Congratulations to all players.
