Year 10
Winter School 2024
At today’s Year Meeting, the Dean of Students Ms Jansons spoke to Year 10 about the rigorous selection process that is currently underway for those students who have applied to attend.
Key Messages
Attendance at Winter School should be considered a privilege by students, accompanied by high expectations regarding learning, behaviour, personal responsibility, and contributing positively to community life.
The process of nominating for enrolment at Winter School can be daunting for any student, and we acknowledge and admire the moral courage displayed by all applicants in nominating themselves to attend.
We would like to thank you all for your applications and interviews.
Selection Process
The offer to attend Winter School is based on the following criteria: the student’s application and interview, overall contribution to school life (clubs, sports, activities, service etc.), input from key staff, and your 2024 student record (RADs, Formal Conversations, Detentions etc.). In a coeducation school, gender balance is also important.
In the next week, letters regarding your Winter School application will be sent home. Not all applications will be successful.
Successful applications are conditional on students upholding the Student Code of Conduct and acknowledging and supporting Winters School expectations.
- This offer of a place at Winter School is dependent on the student’s continued adherence to the Redlands Student Code of Conduct, School Values, and sustained academic effort prior to the program’s commencement.
- While residing at our High Country Campus (HCC), all students must uphold all aspects of the Redlands Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the 2024 Student Planner.
- At all times, students must stay within the designated boundaries on High Country Campus, Jindabyne and Thredbo.
Consequences for breaches of the Code will be applied, which may include termination of Winter School enrolment.
Managing Personal Responses
In the coming week, there will be a spectrum of emotions experienced. Excitement, energy, joy, and thankfulness will be common among those offered a place.
It’s also important to acknowledge that some students may experience disappointment, frustration, confusion, and grief.
All these emotions are normal and expected. It’s important to take time to process these emotions, to:
- Recognise these responses in yourself and others.
- Understand the cause and consequence of these emotions.
- Label the nuanced emotion accurately.
- Express them appropriately and respectfully toward each other.
- Engage in activities that help you find balance and regulate your emotions effectively.
Our previous Year 10 cohorts have managed this process with humble compassion for each other and the school. What does that mean? They have privately celebrated and supported each other, focusing on the community within the school.
If students felt confusion (or sometimes anger) as to why they did not receive an offer and needed more information—instead of having their parents complain on their behalf—they demonstrated maturity and proactively sought feedback from appropriate staff. If you feel like you personally need to talk this through, please reach out for a chat.

Rise to the Challenge: Join the 2024 Balmoral Burn Schools Relay

Get ready to unleash your potential and join the 2024 Balmoral Burn Schools Relay! Students from Years 7–12, get ready to conquer Sydney’s steepest street in Mosman for a noble cause. Join Redlands for the Humpy Dumpty Balmoral Burn Schools Relay on 26 May, 7:30 to 9:30 am. This event isn’t just about the challenge; it supports sick children nationwide. Founded by Phil Kearns AM to thank the Royal North Shore Hospital, the Balmoral Burn aids hospitals through the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. Students can form teams of four, aiming to raise $250 per team for the cause. Separate races will be held for boys and girls. Email Mr. Walker your team by the end of Week 1, Term 2, to participate. Let’s unite as a community and make a difference. For more information, check the Secondary Sports section of Note Day.
First Australia RoboCamps
First Australia RoboCamps teach students to design, build and code robots to complete a series of challenges. Classes are offered from beginner to advanced level in purpose-built facilities at Macquarie University. These are perfect for students who wish to stretch and challenge their STEM engineering and coding skills. RoboCamps will run over the April term break, and the deadline for registration is 14 April.

English Writing Competitions
There are some exciting opportunities for eager students to flex their writing muscles this term and next with the following writing competitions now open for submissions from students in Yrs 7-12:
- The Nan Manfield Young Writers’ Award – deadline: 14 April 2024
- The Whitlam Institute What Matters? Competition (fiction, non-fiction, prose or poetry) – deadline: 17 May 2024
- Mosman Youth Awards in Literature (prose and poetry) – deadline: 31 May 2024
We encourage all students to have a go at crafting a piece of writing. Whether it is based on work they have done in their English class or something they have composed out of their own interest, writing a piece that is judged externally is a great way to gain validation for effort and skill.
