Year 10
Judith Locke
On Monday 25 February, we are very pleased to be hosting clinical psychologist and author of The Bonsai Child, Dr Judith Locke. This is part of our ongoing focus on wellbeing, as well as providing another of the many parent education and engagement opportunities here at Redlands. The event is being held in Redlands Hall and begins at 6.00pm.
In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents we are excited to announce that Clinical Psychologist and author Dr Judith Locke will be coming to Redlands to present two workshops for parents around how to support their child to become confident and capable. These workshops are designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal best, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Judith will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.
Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now Director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organizations. Judith works with families and individuals in her private practice in Toowong, Qld. She also undertakes research at QUT, investigating modern parenting, student and parent wellbeing, and their interaction with the academic environment. Judith is a Member of The Australian Psychological Society (APS) and a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. She is the author of the popular parenting book The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around.
Student Achievements
Chloe Stewart has been successful in her application for a scholarship to attend The Critical Issues Summit in July/August of this year. Rustic Pathways is an organisation which facilities educational experiences for students through travel and philanthropy as a means to achieve sustainable growth in developing countries around the world. In addition to a providing travel experiences for students, Rustic Pathways has recently introduced a Critical Issues Summit for aspiring youth leaders and change makers. The Critical Issues Summit 2019 is a unique two week experience that will bring together 100 students from more than 20 countries around the world. During the first week of the Summit, Immersion Week which is held in one of five countries listed below, students will examine one of five global critical issues in local communities. The second week, Action Week (held in Thailand), brings all students together for a conference-style event focusing on skills like design-thinking and learning start up methods. Action week will feature presentations from experts, workshops and community building.
The five global critical issues being examined at the Summit are:
Laos – Globalization: How sustainable is the current pace of global growth?
Vietnam – Access to Education: Is it a right for all people?
Myanmar and Thailand – Refugee Crises: Should we close borders to people in need?
Thailand – Gender Equality: How long until we reach equality?
Cambodia – Access to Water: Is there enough on the planet?
We warmly congratulate Chloe on this significant achievement. We look forward to hearing her news and stories of these exciting two weeks.
Swimming Carnival
The Secondary Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday and proved a wonderful day. It was fantastic to see Yr 10 students supporting others in their House groups. Particular congratulations must go to Olivia Donoghue as she broke the record in the 16 Years 50m freestyle in 26.73s. Olivia was also the Age Champion for the U16 Years Girls as well as the Intermediate Divisional Girls Champion. Olivia also won the Champion of Champions 50m freestyle race.
A special mention to Olivia Donoghue, Gabby Drage, Alexander Holtheuer, Rachel Kinghorn, Marie Kurzrock and Sophia Justice, as these students competed in six or more events. Such events as the Swimming Carnival are all about team spirit and “having a go”, and this was certainly demonstrated through the high level of participation by these students.
