Issue 4 2019 - 21 Feb 2019

From the Principal

This week, the stands of the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre at Homebush were filled with Redlands students cheering on their teammates on two consecutive days – Secondary School on Tuesday and Junior School on Wednesday. I was delighted to attend the Secondary School Swimming Carnival and witness first-hand the large number of students who were pursuing personal bests or competing to gain valuable points for their House.

Thank you to all our Junior and Secondary School Sports staff for their splendid organisation of these two events which do so much to engender House spirit amongst our students, to all of the other staff who assisted on the days and to our Junior and Secondary School House Captains for leading the rallying cry for participation in support of their respective Houses. Finally, a special mention to the students of Roseby for winning the Secondary School House Shield for the first time since 2006; and to the students of Cowper for winning the Junior School House Trophy for the 6th year in succession.

I am very much looking forward to joining parents, both current and new, at tomorrow evening’s Twilight in the Piazza function on the Junior Campus. In the event of inclement weather, the function will be held in Dunnet Hall, also on the Junior Campus. Please note that stilettos are not to be worn in Dunnet Hall, as they damage the playing surface.

On Tuesday 19 February the Secondary School had a very successful House Swimming Carnival at SOPAC. There were many outstanding individual results on the day with School records being broken by Samuel Virtue (Yr 9) in the Boys 15 years 50 Freestyle; Kirill Shatilov (Yr 9) in the Boys 16 years 50m Freestyle; Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) in the Girls 16 years 50m Freestyle and McDouall House in the Junior Girls 4 x50m Freestyle relay. Congratulations to Samuel Virtue (Yr 9) and Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) for winning their respective Champions of Champions 50m freestyle races. A full report on the Swimming results can be found in the Sports section of Note Day.

It was also great to see the increased participation and House spirit on display throughout the day, led ably by the House Captains and the Yr 12 cohort. Congratulations to Roseby who won the House Swimming Shield for the first time in over ten years. And a begrudging congratulations to the Yr 12 student team who turned the tables on the staff team to just out touch them and win the 4x50m relay in an exciting final race of the day.

Prefects Commissioning Service

Last Thursday, Ms Shaw, Ms Lihou and I accompanied our Yr 12 Prefects to the Annual Commissioning Service for Prefects in Anglican Schools at St Andrew’s Cathedral. Our Prefects joined student school leaders from over 30 other Anglican schools across NSW at this event. The Service provided an opportunity for the students to reflect on leadership and the important role they play as student leaders in a school setting. (Picture at top of page)

Judith Locke Presentation

In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents and provide them with useful information and recent research on ‘best practice’, we are excited to announce that clinical psychologist and author, Dr Judith Locke, will be coming to Redlands to present two workshops for parents around how you can support your child to become more confident and capable. These workshops are designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal bests, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Judith will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become more independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.

Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organisations. Judith works with families and individuals in her private practice in Toowong, Qld. She also undertakes research at QUT, investigating modern parenting, student and parent wellbeing, and their interaction with the academic environment. Judith is a member of The Australian Psychological Society (APS) and a Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. She is also the author of the popular parenting book, The Bonsai Child: Why modern parenting limits children’s potential and practical strategies to turn it around.

The Secondary School session will be held on Monday 25 February from 6.00pm in Redlands Hall. Please note these sessions are for parents only and you should not bring your children.

Twilight in the Piazza

I hope to see many of you at the Welcome Cocktail Evening on the Junior Campus tomorrow evening from 6.00 – 8.00pm. It is a great opportunity for parents to connect with other parents across the school and also meet key staff who will be working closely with your son or daughter over the coming academic year. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place in Dunnet Hall, Junior Campus. Please note, no stilettos to be worn in Dunnet Hall.

Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made. Student Achievements

Chloe Stewart has been successful in her application for a scholarship to attend The Critical Issues Summit in July/August of this year. Rustic Pathways is an organisation which facilities educational experiences for students through travel and philanthropy as a means to achieve sustainable growth in developing countries around the world. In addition to a providing travel experiences for students, Rustic Pathways has recently introduced a Critical Issues Summit for aspiring youth leaders and change makers. The Critical Issues Summit 2019 is a unique two week experience that will bring together 100 students from more than 20 countries around the world. During the first week of the Summit, Immersion Week which is held in one of five countries listed below, students will examine one of five global critical issues in local communities. The second week, Action Week (held in Thailand), brings all students together for a conference-style event focusing on skills like design-thinking and learning start up methods. Action week will feature presentations from experts, workshops and community building.

The five global critical issues being examined at the Summit are:

Laos – Globalization: How sustainable is the current pace of global growth?
Vietnam – Access to Education: Is it a right for all people?
Myanmar and Thailand – Refugee Crises: Should we close borders to people in need?
Thailand – Gender Equality: How long until we reach equality?
Cambodia – Access to Water: Is there enough on the planet?

We warmly congratulate Chloe on this significant achievement. We look forward to hearing her news and stories of these exciting two weeks.

Swimming Carnival

The Secondary Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday and proved a wonderful day. It was fantastic to see Yr 10 students supporting others in their House groups. Particular congratulations must go to Olivia Donoghue as she broke the record in the 16 Years 50m freestyle in 26.73s. Olivia was also the Age Champion for the U16 Years Girls as well as the Intermediate Divisional Girls Champion. Olivia also won the Champion of Champions 50m freestyle race.

A special mention to Olivia Donoghue, Gabby Drage, Alexander Holtheuer, Rachel Kinghorn, Marie Kurzrock and Sophia Justice, as these students competed in six or more events. Such events as the Swimming Carnival are all about team spirit and “having a go”, and this was certainly demonstrated through the high level of participation by these students.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please Read

I found this article very interesting this week, particularly as I had not heard of the term ‘lawnmowing’ before! If you do decide to read it, I urge to read to the end, as the last half helps to explain why we are like we are as parents. Being a former police officer, I particular found meaning in the comment, ‘Every police member I have asked “has having seen what you have in the job made you a more cautious parent” has answered “definitely, yes”’. My daughter has regularly told me over the years that I panic too much and always think the worst is going to happen to her and her brothers. While we all make mistakes as parents, I loved one of the final comments in the article which sums it up – ‘our parenting instincts are driven by exactly the same motivation as all the rest; love.’

Pastoral Care Program

This week students spent the Tutor group session being shown by their Tutors the location of the Yr 9 Assessment Booklet on the Pastoral Care iLearn page and some of the important aspects of the booklet. They were also given time to download the booklet to their desktop and to look at the link on iLearn to the Study Skills resources. The Study Centre timetable for after school support is also on the iLearn page.

Social Awareness Program

This week students have begun to look at the Term 1 topic of Gender Inequality. They have brainstormed the ways that women are treated unequally and have begun choosing their particular topic to research more fully as the term progresses.

Twilight Drinks

A reminder that Twilight Drinks are to be held this Friday 22 February on the Junior Campus beginning at 6.00pm. Tony Dong and I will be there at the beginning of the evening, so please come and say hello to us. The event will be in Dunnet Hall if it is raining.

Yr 9 Parent Representatives

A reminder that we are looking for volunteers to take on the role of Yr 9 Parent Reps for 2019. Ideally at least two people are needed, however the more the merrier.

The Role entails organising:

  • a coffee morning at the beginning of each term
  • a Dad’s night out
  • a Mum’s night out
  • an end of year gathering
  • welcoming new parents/students to the school
  • being a conduit for information.

There are quarterly meetings held in school for all Year Parent Reps, which only one of the team need attend so that information can be passed on. It is a fun way to get to know more people and more about what is happening at the school. If you think this is for you – please contact Kylie Hunt on bk.hunt@me.com.

On Monday 25 February, at 6.00pm in Redlands Hall, we are very pleased to be hosting clinical psychologist and author of The Bonsai Child, Dr Judith Locke. This is part of our ongoing focus on wellbeing, as well as providing another of the many parent education and engagement opportunities here at Redlands.

In an ever-changing world, parents are constantly wondering how they can best support their child. As part of our on-going efforts to support parents we are excited to announce that Clinical Psychologist and author Dr Judith Locke will be coming to Redlands to present two workshops for parents around how to support their child to become confident and capable. These workshops are designed to provide specific strategies to assist the young people we care for to achieve their personal best, both within the classrooms as well as in other areas of life. Judith will provide advice as to how to support your child in a friendly and relatable way as well as providing specific strategies around how to help your child become independent and make the most of their opportunities whilst at school.

Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, and former teacher and workplace trainer. She is now Director of the training company, Confident and Capable, which delivers psychological solutions for parents, students and organizations. Judith works with families and individuals in her private practice in Toowong, Qld. She also undertakes research at QUT, investigating modern parenting, student and parent wellbeing, and their interaction with the academic environment. News
  • Congratulations to all swimmers who competed at the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday. Age Champions have been announced in the Sports section of Note Day. Well done to the winning House, Roseby.
  • Best wishes to Aurora Golowenko, James Ireland, Marina Viese Vivaldi and James Whelan who left for a three week exchange to New Zealand on Saturday. We look forward to hearing about their experiences. Yr 8 will welcome four students from New Zealand in early Term 2.
  • Well done to Isabella and Angus McLachlan who have been accepted into the annual Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive Program held in New York.
  • During Pastoral Care this week, students have continued work on organisation. Students have each completed an A3 Wall Planner which they will be bringing home to stick up on the wall in their study area.
Student Planners

Some students are naturally organised; for others, organisation is a learned skill. Each cycle, Tutors are viewing Student Planners to ensure they are being used correctly as a tool to aid time management. We ask that parents also assist students in the use of this important resource by viewing and signing Student Planners each week. Students should be recording 1) the date home learning is assigned; and 2) the date home learning is due.

Swimming Carnival

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”  The Olympic Creed.

In the inspiring surroundings of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Pool, these words really resonated with me as I observed, enjoyed and felt the palpable spirit of our Redlands students at our annual Junior School Swimming Carnival.

As always, for me, it was an absolute joy to witness such strong House spirit and the perfect balance of competitive spirit and sportsmanship from the students. And with both the 25m and the 50m pools available to students, participation levels were very high again with students all experiencing contributing to the overall House totals, something of great collective worth for them.

As I remarked at the conclusion of the event, every student would have had their own personal hopes and expectations of the Carnival; for some students, I know that overcoming the challenge of being in a race for the first time was a milestone; for others it was swimming in the 50m Olympic pool for the first time; and for some it may have been achieving a personal best time after committed practice and training ahead of the event. For every child who swam, I hope that there was a sense of accomplishment and above all, enjoyment in being an active participant in another wonderful Junior School event.

My thanks are extended to all of the teacher and student helpers, without whom a carnival of this magnitude for 450 students simply could not take place. In particular, I acknowledge the excellent leadership of this event again by Head of Junior School Sport, Mr Adrian Carter, ably assisted by Junior School Sports Administrator, Mrs Gemma Michael.

I also add my congratulations again to Cowper House who retained the House Swimming Trophy for a remarkable sixth year in succession!

What Makes a Great Community?

In just over 13 years at Redlands, I have often highlighted the significance of our School community to me and increasingly over the course of this time, to my family. Schools are about people and from the first day I walked into the School, I have felt a strong connection to the people who make up our community and believe that it is a fundamental strength of Redlands.

As part of their study on the roles and responsibilities that people have in our community, Yr 3 invited Principal Dr Lennox, Deputy Principal Ms McGarry, Head of Early Childhood Mrs Fellowes and I to a special Q & A session with them as they articulately posed thoughtful and challenging questions on the roles that we play at Redlands. As a group, it was lovely for us to hear the Yr 3 students’ thoughts too and following our stint in the hot seats, a number of our Yr 12 students were asked similar questions, and some of these students had been taught by Yr 3 teachers, Mr Latimer and Ms Moore-Patel, when they were in the Junior School. Listening to both colleagues and students, there was a genuine synergy in the shared understanding and values of what it means to be part of the Redlands community and for me, this spoke volumes in itself. Thank you to the Yr 3 teachers and students for allowing us to be part of this learning experience for the students, and indeed for us too.

Yr 4 iPads

Yr 4 parents are reminded that for those either providing or purchasing an iPad for their child from Yr 4, the student inductions will take place next week (Week 5). While the BYO iPad program in Yr 4 is optional, we do recommend purchasing a device which allows them three years usage as an iPad is required from Yr 5. We do have six iPads in each Yr 4 classroom. At this stage, if you order the iPad online through the School, it will not arrive by next week; however, iPads can be purchased from JB Hi-Fi, Myer, David Jones or any Apple store. If you are providing an iPad for your child to use at school please ensure that you have:

  1. Read the BYO information and set up an Apple ID
  2. Read the Terms and Conditions
  3. Given Online Permission

Without the online permission, your child cannot go through the induction process as set out in the dates below:

Clean Up Australia Day

All Redlands students and their families are again encouraged to participate in Clean Up Australia Day, an activity to help make a positive contribution in our local community. This year, we are changing location and will be focusing our energy on cleaning up Spit West Reserve. Many Redlands students have spent time in this area for various sports including training sessions in the park and rowing on the harbour. This is our chance to make a positive difference. We will be fanning out from the Redlands Rowing sheds and seeing if we can remove as much rubbish as possible from the park and the harbour foreshore.

Date:                               Sunday 3 March
Arrive:                            1.00pm for a short briefing
Clean up:                       1.15pm – 2.30pm
Afternoon tea:              2.30pm, BYO snacks to share

Drop Off and Pick Up Times

As per my letter prior to the start of the term, please may I remind parents that unless here earlier for an event or practice, students should arrive close to 8.00am when teachers commence supervision. I appreciate that sometimes bus arrival times or drop off times mean students get here a few minutes before this but we have a number of students being dropped off at 7.30am or even earlier and left by themselves in the playground, which causes me concern from a safety perspective.

A reminder also that Tuesday Clubs finish at 4.30pm when students should be collected promptly. We have had students left until 5.00pm with teachers and from next week, if teachers need to leave, students will be sent to our After School Care program which may incur a charge.

Many thanks for your support of these two matters.

Welcome Parent Cocktail Evening

I look forward to joining many in our Redlands community at tomorrow evening’s Welcome Cocktail event on the Junior Campus. I know that there has been a team of Redlands staff and parents busily working behind the scenes in setting the stage for what will, I am sure, be another memorable event and I acknowledge and thank them in advance. In the event of inclement weather, the drinks will be held in Dunnet Hall. Please bear in mind that stilettos are not to be worn in Dunnet Hall.

Social Connectedness

Social connectedness at school plays an integral part in establishing a stable foundation for students from which successful learning can occur. At Redlands, we believe that students who have positive relationships are much more likely to be highly engaged learners. We therefore embed the development of five key social and emotional competencies into our curriculum and teaching methods. The widely used Framework for Systemic Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) identifies five core competencies that educate hearts, inspire minds and help people navigate the world more effectively. It informs how students relate with each other at all levels of the system, creating a welcoming, participatory, and caring climate for learning. Three of the five competencies are associated with social skills, specifically Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. In the Prep School, Circle Time, Friendship Club and The Friendship Bench are practical applications of the social awareness and relationship skills we aim to build. Friendship Club runs three times per week during lunch time, providing a space for students who would like to build friendships and play in an environment that is supported by a teacher. This year, we are delighted to have several Yr 6 leaders, who have volunteered their time during lunch to assist the younger members of the School with their overall development of social skills. The Friendship Bench is a place where students can go to, if they are having trouble finding their friends in the playground or need someone to play with.

On Friday, I was privileged to be invited to talk to the Yr 3s as part of their unit of study on Changing Communities. All students were interested and engaged as they listened to the panel of speakers, Dr Lennox, Ms McGarry, Mr Guha, Yr 12 leaders and I, discussing the role we play within our school community, the responsibilities we share and the changes that have occurred over the time we have been at Redlands. It has only been a few weeks in the Junior School for these students, and they continue to show their perceptive and thoughtful questioning skills, together with their insightful ideas and considerations.

Technology, Learning and Wellbeing

It was wonderful to join Early Childhood families at this week’s eLearning Session focussing on the synchronicity of our Teaching and Learning philosophy and the integration of technology in our classrooms and curriculum. My thanks are extended to the School’s eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow, Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mr Coutts and Mrs Sam Kourakis, Dean of Student Well Being, for their extensive preparation and presentation to parents, which can be accessed here and on Redlands Pulse.

As mentioned in previous Note Day correspondence, Prep are using Seesaw, a digital platform for students to capture and reflect on their learning. Within the next few days, each student will come home with a letter in their Home Learning folder or Student Planner that outlines how to sign up and connect to your child’s learning journal. Each letter has a unique code which you will need to enable access so please look out for this, follow the instructions to join and enjoy the work samples your child shares with you. If you have any questions, please talk your child’s teacher.

The Big Dig Excursion

As part of their History study, last Friday, Yr 2 visited The Big Dig archaeological site in The Rocks. Students were led on a guided tour to learn about the history of the area and the families who lived there in the 1800s. They were able to draw comparisons between their lives and the families who lived in this area. Students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to excavate artefacts in the simulated archaeological dig and discuss how these artefacts help us learn about history.

Sibling Photo Information

This week, a reminder email was sent to families about the upcoming sibling photographs which will take place on Friday 22 February between 7.30 – 9.30am in Parkes Hall on the Junior Campus. Sibling photographs only apply to children enrolled at the school. All parents will be responsible for taking their children to Parkes Hall for the photographs and returning them to their classrooms or relevant areas of the school upon completion of photos. There are no set times for sibling photos, they will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Student Planner

Every student in the Preparatory School has been given a Student Planner. Please take some time to read through the front pages, where you will find pertinent information relating to Home Learning, the Wellbeing Program and some clear guidelines relating to important school policies. If you haven’t already done so, please complete Page 1 with your child’s details.

Twilight Drinks

We look forward to seeing you at the Twilight Drinks tomorrow night. Please note that in the event of inclement weather, the Drinks will be held in Dunnet Hall. Please be reminded that stilettos may not be worn due to damaging the playing surface in the Hall.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Last Wednesday Redlands House and Transition Gold, together with the parent community, celebrated Chinese New Year. The interesting festivities included making dumplings, constructing paper lanterns, dress ups in traditional Chinese attire, cherry blossom paintings and dragon dancing. It was wonderful to see the children so interested and engaged. These types of celebrations are important as they foster respect, understanding and an awareness of the diversity within our school and the difference in culture of the world.  We would like to thank Mrs Thomas and Ms Hamilton for organising the event, and all the parent helpers for your effort to make this celebration so successful. A special thanks to Anita Fu for organising all of the ingredients and cooking of the delicious dumplings.

Library

Each week our Transition class, and each fortnight our Senior classes, attend lessons in the Lucy Hill Library. Please ensure your child comes equipped with their library bag for every lesson if they wish to borrow, to ensure all our books are kept safe. Library bags are available from the Uniform Shop. Thank you.

From the Head of Secondary Sport

On Tuesday the whole Secondary School travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to participate in the Swimming Carnival. For the first time since 2006 Roseby won the overall point score House Shield. A full list of Age Champions, Divisional Champions and record breakers can be found further down in this article.

What was most impressive was the participation by students in our younger years. 89% of Yr 7s competed in a minimum of one event and 12 students competed in six or more events. This is a fantastic effort from our youngest students in the Secondary School and it was fantastic to see them having a go! Across the day we had 975 swimmers race across different 140 events, a fantastic display of School and House spirit.

Netball

The trials for the 1st VII Netball will begin in Week 6, Tuesday 5 March (Lang Gym 5.30 – 7.30pm) and Thursday 7 March (Lang Gym 5.00 – 7.00pm). These trials are open to all players in Yrs 10 -12. If you are interested in trialing for the 1sts please email cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au with your preferred position #1 and preferred position #2.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the Yrs 9, 10, 11 and 12 students in the Rowing program head out to the NSW State Championships held in Penrith. With schools and clubs competing from across Australia, this is a great opportunity for us to get an early indication as to where we are currently placed in the field along with testing our ability to forms crews for potential events at the Australian Rowing Championships held at the end of March.

The Senior Boys were outstanding across the weekend, with both the 1st crew of Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10), Alec Price (Yr 12), Max Durrant (Yr 11), Mitch Simpson (Yr 11) & Alex Coney (Yr 11) and the 2nd crew Tom Morris (Yr 11), Jared Bowden (Yr 12), Alex Verschoor (Yr 10), Nick Wilkes (Yr 11) and Xavier Little (Yr 10) progressing from the heats into the final of the Championship School Boy Coxed Quad. While leading for the first 1000m, our 1st Boys won Silver in the final while the 2nd Boys finished a creditable 7th.

On Sunday morning our students returned to Penrith to race once again, starting with the School Single Scull. In what was a very high standard of racing, Kristin Walker (Yr 10), Emily Barrelle (Yr 10), Maddi Howard (Yr 11), Zoe Kimber (Yr 12), Alec Price (Yr 12), Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) and Alex Verschoor (Yr 10); in the Under 17 Single Sculls, Emily Pashley (Yr 10), Kristin Walker (Yr 10), Emily Barrelle (Yr 10), Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10) and Alex Verschoor (Yr 10) all progressed through to the Semi Finals.

The School Boy Double Sculls was a hotly contested event, with two contesting against a Cranbrook crew for the top three positions. After a tussle the length of the 2000m race, the combination of Max Durrant (Yr 11) and Mitch Simpson (Yr 11) took out a Silver medal over the combination of Alec Price (Yr 12) and Alex Holtheuer (Yr 10).

In what was one of the largest fields of the day with 40 competitors, Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9) showed some real class and resilience in the Women’s Under 16 Single Scull. Winning a Bronze medal in the final, she had to overcome some experienced competition who lead her through the halfway mark to the final with one of our strongest individual performances of the regatta.

While the above mentioned students received some top honours, our Senior and Yr 9 students all raced well across the weekend and deserve to be recognised for their efforts. The experiences will harden them all as we move into the final few regattas of the season and will ensure our students are more than confident with their race plans at these peak regattas to come.

Special thanks to Andrew Bowden who took some great photos over the weekend. Please feel free to browse through them all at your leisure – https://aabowden.smugmug.com/share/RedlandsRowing18-19

Samuel Virtue (Yr 10) broke two records including the Boys 15 Years 50m Freestyle in a time of 27.11s. He also backed this us by breaking the Boys Champion of Champions record in a time of 27.12s.

Kirill Shatilov (Yr 10) broke the Boys 16 Years 50m Freestyle record in a time of 26.73s.

Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) broke the Girls Champion of Champions record in a time of 28.82s.

Team McDouall had a great swim in the Junior Girls relay breaking the Junior Girls 4x50m Freestyle in a time of 2:15.24s.

Tennis

The NSTA Term 1 competition began this week with many teams playing their first Tennis match since last year. After a slow start, many Redlands teams found some form to challenge for points and pressure their opponents to win crucial points, resulting in many of our top teams winning their matches. A number of Redlands teams faced stronger opponents and although they may not have won, they were able to reflect positively on the match as a learning experience for future games.

Congratulations to Emily Colvin and Sebastian Dobson who represented the ISA in the NSWCIS Tennis Trials on Wednesday.

Students are reminded to arrive at their venue 15 minutes before their match starts and are to wear the correct Redlands Tennis uniform: white Redlands Tennis polo, Redlands PE shorts, white Redlands cap or visor.

Touch Football

For the last weekend of Touch Football before the Finals the entire program travelled to Orange to play double-header matches against Kinross Wolaroi and Scots All Saints. Across the whole day the efforts of our students was amazing with many of our teams playing crucial matches to help with qualification for the finals in two weeks. Whilst all teams across the day had some wonderful wins and some standout individual performances, I did want to use this weeks Note Day to highlight one team in particular.

The Junior Cs won both of their matches, beating All Saints 5-0 and following that up with a wonderful win against Kinross 3-1, but it was more than the two wins that made this weekend so special for this group. The teamwork shown by these girls was second to none, with players encouraging each other in defence and attack. Lily Attard and Anna Ivanovic put on some wonderful displays of attack through the middle of both Kinross and All Saints, often breaking through the line and looking for support from their teammates. Kayla Carlson was everywhere, working hard in defence whilst still being one of the sharpest in the team on attack. Her brilliant try against Kinross was an example of this as she stepped hard off her right foot, beat the first defender, stepped back off the left and then sprinted the length of the field, leaving defenders in her wake. Out on the wings Daisy Oliver, Bronte Backhouse and Josie Simpson were loving the space created by our middle attack, often making runs of 10+ metres down the sidelines in each set of six. Iona Carter led the team with her chat in defence making some amazing late diving tackles. Allegra Brown was Ms Dependable, working tirelessly in defence and then making easy metres in attack as she ran direct, angling back into the defence. Marie Kurzrock and Jazz Gregan across both games were incredible, no dropped passes, amazing runs in attack and their efforts in defence were the main reason we only let in one try across the whole weekend.

The way this team has developed across this season just highlights how hard they have worked across their training and their matches. They started the season with two tough losses and since then have continued to improve, the two games over the weekend are a testament to how strong this group is as a team. Well done to the Junior Cs.

Winter Sport Selections

Keep an eye out for an email with your Winter Sport selection coming over the next few days. Despite only just starting our Summer season, we’re planning for the 2019 Winter.

Mouthguard Fittings – Last Chance!

Profit Mouthguards are coming to the Junior School to fit mouthguards. These professionally fitted mouthguards are customised with colours and phone number, will be fitted to your child and be delivered back to school for collection in time for Winter Sport season trainings.

Fitting times are available from 7.15 – 8.30am on Friday 22 February. Please email Mr Carter to confirm a fitting time and be emailed a ProFit client form.

Extra Sports

Don’t forget our great extra sports on offer before and after school. Our Football Skills Squad is an active after school option running on Mondays and Fridays (if there is a squad) with Coach Javier on Redlands House courts.

Basketball

Our Yr 3/4 B team played a ripping second half last week to come away with a nail-biting draw against Knox in Lang Gym. Meanwhile the A team battled hard and despite giving away some height and experience, they showed great tenacity to give themselves a chance.

Best of luck to our trial nominees for the NSWCIS Basketball team, who will tough it out against Independent Schools’ best this Friday for selection to this prestigious team.

Girls’ Football

We desperately need some Yr 6 girls to help out with our team for their Saturday matches this term. Football experience is not essential. Please email acarter@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Paul Kelly Cup

We have entered boys and girls teams to take part in the Paul Kelly Cup AFL at Gore Hill on 20 March. Sign ups for the Yr 5 and 6 students will be posted in their respective classroom areas this week. It will be the first major carnival at the new Gore Hill facility, which is an exciting time for AFL on the North Shore.
