Music
Instrumental Competition
On Monday this week, we were delighted to listen to the incredible instrumental talent of Years 7-12 across three divisions. It was amazing to hear an incredibly high standard, and have them be adjudicated by the Music Educator and Music Director, Barry Warmsley. He had the impossible task of adjudicating the competitive display of talent and provided valuable feedback for our performers.
Many thanks go to the staff involved in bringing it together, including Mr Jason Xu, our Head of Bands and Small Ensembles, Ms Kirsty Hales, our Senior Administrator, and Dr Jeremy Eskenazi, our Resident Associate artist, who spent many hours rehearsing and performing with the competitors. We would also like to thank all of our audience members for the evening, and the Friends of Music for providing food to fuel the competitors before their big performances!
The prize-winners of the competition can be found below. Well done to all competitors!

A reminder for Ensemble Preparation
It has been a wonderful start to the year in our Ensembles across both campuses! We would like to continue this momentum by encouraging the following important routines:
- Being on time: We aim to start the first warmup at the start time of the rehearsal. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to allow for setup time.
- Being prepared with equipment: Every week students should have their instrument, music in a folder and a pencil. Being prepared is crucial for students to get the most out of each rehearsal.
- Home practice: School rehearsals are a time to work on ensemble skills such as togetherness, dynamics, articulations, and bowings. It is expected that students practise their music every week to enable them to be confident in the group rehearsals. It’s a great idea to take any tricky passages to private lessons for extra help.
- Attendance: Students are expected to attend all rehearsals throughout the year, except when absent from school or prior notice has been given to the Music Department. Please email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au or seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for absences.
Here to help!
Keep your eye on Pulse and the MUSIC EVENTS page to ensure key dates are all on the family calendar and reach out to your campus Music Office if we can assist in any way.
