Issue 7 2024 Term 1 Week 7 - 14 Mar 2024

From the Principal

Monday was a special day in the Secondary School as the second floor of the Redlands Learning Hub and then Redlands Hall were full of students, staff and parents as we hosted our International Women’s Day Breakfast, Count Her In.

This event culminated weeks of International Women’s Day activities across both campuses including:

  • talks in the most recent Junior School Assembly;
  • panel discussions of students and staff at Secondary School assemblies;
  • participation by a small group of students in a Round Square hosted online discussion with students from around the world on the topic of inclusion for women;
  • our Secondary School Wellbeing Captains, Anneka and Anderson, as well as Year 12 Year Advisor, Ms Ynson, and I having the opportunity to listen to an amazing panel of speakers at an event hosted by the Federal Member for North Sydney, Kylea Tink MP; and
  • our Secondary School Service Captains, Will and Antonia, along with Year 12 students Ava and Johnny and Secondary School Dean of Students, Ms Jansons, attending Mosman Council’s International Women’s Day Breakfast.

On Monday morning, those in attendance heard inspiring stories from two leaders committed to the creation of opportunities for women: The Hon. Bronnie Taylor (Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals Party and the Former NSW Minister for Women) and Vicki Condon AM (Founder, CEO and Executive Director of Raise Foundation).

At Redlands, our commitment to gender equity stems from our values and our mission to provide a diverse and inclusive coeducational environment. As our Service Captains Will and Antonia reflected at Monday’s Breakfast, “International Women’s Day is a time to reflect, and see where we, as a community. can improve and strive to foster greater inclusivity; the day acts as a reminder of how far we have come but also how far we have got to go. In a coeducational school, this day is especially important as it is a celebration that we get to come together each day and work with one another with equal opportunities and the ability to encourage one another to succeed.”

As a school, we are also proud to be listed in the recently released Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s (WGEA) top 20 schools nationwide with the biggest pay gap in favour of women.

Our Gender Pay Gap Statement can be found here

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of spending some time at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, cheering on our swimmers at the ISA Swimming Championships. There were many wonderful individual results and overall our girls finished 6th in Division 1 and our boys won Division 2. The highlight of the day for me was the last race – the Senior Boys 4 x 50m freestyle relay – not because we won the event, but because the relay team consisted of three Year 12 boys who were successfully competing for the School in their final year at Redlands and could finish on a real high.

Community Update

It was lovely to see more than 200 of our community at the inaugural Count Her In International Women’s Day Breakfast on Monday. Two incredible leaders and changemakers, The Hon. Bronnie Taylor – Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals, Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Vicki Condon AM – CEO and Executive Director of Raise Foundation, shared some heartfelt and personal stories of their commitment to the creation of opportunities for women to earn, learn and lead. These stories and more were carefully threaded together by Liz Green, our talented host and  Redlands Innovation and Entrepreneurial Strategist.

At Redlands, we are committed to creating and sustaining a workplace that is equitable, diverse and inclusive, reflective of our strategic commitments to creating a positive culture of wellbeing for all members of our school community and continuing to attract and engage quality staff, while recognising and rewarding them irrespective of gender.  Our commitment to gender equity aligns to our Redlands values – Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Fairness and Moral Courage – all of which speak to our strong focus on creating a workplace culture supportive of diversity, inclusion and gender equality.

Uniform Recycling Week has been a great success with hundreds of preloved and unwanted Redlands uniforms recycled through the collection bins located on both campuses this week. A reminder that recycled uniforms will be processed and repurposed by Textile Recyclers Australia, our uniform recycling partner. The collection bins will remain in place tomorrow, the final day of collection.  My thanks to Kimberlee Chipper, Redlands Sustainability Manager, for her leadership on this important project supported by passionate volunteers from the Redlands Parents and Friends Association.

A reminder that our community are invited to attend an Easter reflection, prayer and connection on Wednesday 27 March from 7.30am at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne. A light breakfast will be provided and I am reliably informed that Easter eggs may also be available for tasting.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Shine the Light on 140 Years of Redlands with Alumni Community

Our impressive Redlander Alumni community can be found locally and globally. We connect with our past students through reunions, chapter meetings, past students come back and talk to our students or simply visit to see what has changed since their time at Redlands.

We look forward to celebrating this special milestone Back to Campus Reunion on the Fahl Garden on Friday 5 April. This will be a terrific opportunity for milestone reunions and wider Alumni community to get together. Thank you to the Redlander Alumni Association (RAA) for all their support and commitment to make this event a great success.

“We are thrilled to be able to mark this occasion and look forward to welcoming all Alumni back on campus, which has transformed significantly since many left Redlands” Natalie  Davies, President of the RAA.

Thank you to the RPFA Second Hand Uniform Team

Our highly dedicated RPFA team has again taken an initiative and organised the Second Hand Uniform Sale for our community. This supports our Sustainability goals and proceeds raised are dedicated to the means-tested scholarship. Almost $1,400 was raised for the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship, acknowledging our Redlander 1964 for all her dedication to Service and helping others in need.

A huge KUDOS to JP Forrest, Rebecca James, Jo Lloyd who have led this initiative for a number of years and to the other volunteers who came and gave a hand where needed.

Postcard from London: Jack Murray RL 2022, School Captain

Last September I started studying at the London School of Economics (LSE). The opportunity to live and study in such a dynamic and cosmopolitan city over the last six months has been amazing. Since starting at the LSE, I have met and made friends with some incredible people from all over the world. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to learn from a distinguished cohort of teachers and guest speakers at the LSE who include world leaders, Nobel Prize recipients, prominent academics and business people, all of whom have been generous and forthcoming in meeting and taking questions from students. In the next few weeks, I look forward to hearing from Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates who has long been a personal hero of mine. I’m eternally grateful for the support of the Careers Department and my teachers at Redlands for believing in me and for their support in helping me to achieve my goal of studying in the UK. Wishing everyone at Redlands all the best with their studies!

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .

Walks are roughly 1 1/2 – 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars.  Next three shared here:

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

  • This month we will be discussing The God of No Good by Sita Walker. The meeting is expected to be in the second half of March as an evening session. Stay tuned here for the date.
  • For our May meeting we will be reading a debut crime-thriller by local author, Lynne Johnson, The Bait Trap.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the school’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members and be inspired for how you can get involved.

RPFA FIVE with

Name: Sophia Stewart-Kasimba
Role: RPFA Committee Member and Kindy White Co-Class Parent
Kiddos: Marcus (Kindy White) and Gia (Baby)

If you could choose a RPFA theme song (or super hero), what would be the title name?

The song that comes to mind is “What You Need” by BAYNK and NÏKA. Instant mood boost. Similarly, a connected community raises the energy for everyone it touches. The good grows. Having such an active RPFA reflects just how important this is at Redlands.

Why did you decide to join the RPFA, and what do you love most about it?

I volunteered to be the Class Parent for Marcus’ class in Redlands House Juniors. I felt it was important to be involved since school is a big part of life for a long time.

When the opportunity then came up to join the RPFA, I put my hand up as I saw it as a way to contribute and learn more, as well as meet more parents from across the School. These things are what I love most about it too.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the School?

Say yes! Read Note Day so you can volunteer for opportunities that arise. Connect with other parents and carers, and keep your mind open for how you can give back to the school.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

The wonder of learning so much! How cool to be in the moment of learning to read, for example.

The Week in Pictures

Thank you to all the Class Parents arranging these wonderful events for us!

A great turnout of almost 40 parents to our Year 6 coffee morning, hosted by Karalee Fielding at her home.

Gold Star photos goes to the Year 5 parents who enjoyed a balmy Sunday afternoon meet up while their kiddos splashed and ran about!

A bunch of beauties at Beauty Point walking track this week.

Great start to the day for these Yr 9 mums last week at their coffee morning.

An amazing time was had at the Yr 7 Parents Drinks last night, many new connections were made.

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

IWD Breakfast

We began the week with our inaugural IWD breakfast featuring Bronnie Taylor and Vicki Condon, hosted by Liz Green, our Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist. I was really proud of our Service Captains Antonia Morgan and Will Algar who offered a heartfelt and meaningful welcome to the community. It’s never easy to speak to a large group of people at a formal event, but Antonia and Will did so with ease, humour and compassion. Before commencing the Panel, Madison Noes (Year 11) offered a powerful Acknowledgement of Country, which can be read here. We’ve already begun considering who our 2025 speakers will be! I want to thank all who were involved, including Liz Green for hosting and Julie Wood, our Events Manager, for bringing the event together so seamlessly.

Student Voice – Curriculum Review and Co-Design Session

This past Tuesday, an elite ensemble of performing arts prodigies from Years 8-12 took centre stage in an exclusive co-design workshop. What’s the buzz? The crafting of a possible new elective for Year 8 called Musical Theatre. Could this dazzle us in 2025? Our students responded with – Yes! Let’s explore! At the heart of this venture lies the voice of our students, driving the beat of a dynamic new offering.

Students and staff spent time discussing and collaborating around what this new subject might look like and how it might be taught and assessed. Co-designing with the students the curriculum, assessment and pedagogical approaches enables agency and motivation.

A huge thank you to Ms Boase, Ms Williams and Ms Smith who enthusiastically participated in this workshop, and a resounding applause to our extraordinary students, whose boundless creativity and unwavering dedication to the performing arts illuminated the workshop with their brilliance.

Writing Competitions

Every year, Redlands students demonstrate their initiative by entering various writing competitions which showcase their creative skills and talents. In 2023, Daniel Koppers (now in Year 11) won the Senior Secondary Poetry Prize in the Mosman Youth Awards in Literature for his poem, “Hiroshima.” You can read his winning submission here.

The following writing competitions are now open for submissions from students in Year 7-12:

We encourage all students to have a go at crafting and submitting a piece of writing for entry into these competitions. Whether it’s based on work completed in English class or pursued from personal interest, writing a piece that is judged externally is an excellent way to gain validation for effort and skill.

Balmoral Swim

The Balmoral Swim Schools Relay Challenge is back! On Sunday 24 March, local schools will come together to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute and have fun participating in an open water swim relay.

Each team consists of four swimmers, and each swimmer will swim a 200m leg of the relay. Participants can choose to swim in their year category or an older category, and the entry cost is a $20 donation per swimmer.

Not a swimmer? No problem! You can still support the cause by donating to the Redlands fundraising page to help raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute.

This is a fantastic opportunity to come together, have some fun, and raise funds for a great cause.

Instrumental Competition

On Monday this week, we were delighted to listen to the incredible instrumental talent of Years 7-12 across three divisions. It was amazing to hear an incredibly high standard and have them be adjudicated by the Music Educator and Music Director, Barry Warmsley. He had the impossible task of adjudicating the competitive display of talent and provided valuable feedback for our performers.

Many thanks go to the staff involved in bringing the event together, including Mr Jason Xu, our Head of Bands and Small Ensembles, Ms Kirsty Hales, our Senior Music Administrator and Dr Jeremy Eskenazi, our Resident Associate artist, who spent many hours rehearsing and performing with the competitors. We would also like to thank all our audience members for the evening, including our Deputy Principal Ms Sabine Partington, and the Friends of Music for providing food to fuel the competitors before their big performances!

Redlands International Women’s Day Breakfast

This year, Redlands embraced the opportunity to host the first International Women’s Day Breakfast with the Hon. Bronnie Taylor, Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals and Member of the NSW Legislative Council, and Vicki Condon AM, Founder, CEO and Executive Director of Raise Foundation. The morning was filled with students from all Year Groups who brought along a special adult who has invested in their lives. The speakers were incredibly inspirational and in tune with their audience. The energy and excitement for gender equality and the desire for a stronger future was evident.

This initiative was led by Yr 12 Students, Antonia Morgan, Will Algar, Apoorv Pilani and Ava Taylor. Thank you as well to Yr 12 volunteers who supported the initiative on the day, including James Stuart, Johnny Wang, Hamish Campbell, Daniel Lev, Indi Hindmarsh and Grace Durrant. Several students in Yr 7-11 also supported on the morning by welcoming guests, ushering to seats and fundraising.

In the lead-up to the International Women’s Day Breakfast, Yr 12 students Antonia Morgan, Will Algar, Ava Taylor, Apoorv Pilani, Johnny Wang, James Stuart, Sophia Rolon and Ruby Voyce, along with Yr 11 student volunteers, organised a bake sale and sold IWD merchandise to raise funds for women in need around the world.

International Women’s Day Round Square Event

A small group of students from Naoko Abe’s Japanese class were also able to join an IWD Event hosted by Round Square. See Scarlett Thorp’s reflection below:

The International Women’s Day Round Square zoom hosted by MLC was an invaluable experience where six of us were able to engage in a virtual dialogue with senior students and teachers from various other Australian and international schools. Hearing firsthand perspectives on women’s rights from international perspectives shed light on the diverse challenges women face globally. One particularly impactful conversation was with a student from India, who shared stories of girls marrying as young as 13 and how women are still discouraged from pursuing education in most rural areas. Such exchanges highlight the importance of fostering global awareness of women’s issues, as these are not often topics we hear about firsthand. As Redlands students, these conversations help us develop a more globalised perspective and inspire us to advocate for gender equality on a broader scale.

Team Spirit and Support

Last Saturday, several teams competed in their final game for Summer Sport. In true Yr 12 spirit, a large group of supporters came out to cheer on the Touch Football Boys 1st team and Touch Football Girls 1st team. The boys played a strong game and won in extra time! Congratulations to all student athletes for a strong Summer season. For more Sport information and team results see the Sport Note Day page.

Congratulations to the 2024 Redlands Swimmers who competed at the ISA Swimming Carnival this week. Yr 12 students are Xander Halfen, Rafferty Heard, Charlotte Hugman, Chloe Jennings, Julius Keller, Johnny Wang and Ruby Voyce.

Congratulations to all students competing in the Sailing Racing Championship this week. For Yr 12, this includes Alissandra Braden and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Best of luck to Nathan Barrie as he was invited to travel with the Wanderers A-League team in Melbourne and Perth this week.

University and Careers Update

This week, both HSC and IB students had a presentation from University and Careers Advisors during their Core sessions. All resources from these presentations are linked in iLearn on the HSC and IB Core pages. Students are reminded to work on their Career Plan during Tutor.

Continue to regularly check the University and Careers Page in Pulse. When you click Events or News you will be able to access all opportunities offered for Yr 12 students.

HSC and IB Academic Updates

  1. Oxford Study Courses for IB are now available on OSC. OSC will be hosting a workshop for IB students at Redlands in the Term 2-3 Break 8 -17 July. Again, this is external to Redlands but being hosted by Redlands.
  2. HSC students have just been provided their Jeddle account login (as mentioned in Note Day last week and below). All HSC students should have received a link directly from Jeddle to activate their personal account. Jeddle is a fantastic platform for revising a range of HSC subjects, particularly English. Students can work through modules at their own pace and it will provide students with a range of resources to use.
  3. We may also be offering our own workshops/study centre hours at Redlands and will confirm closer to date.

Extra information about the recycling process:

Textile Recyclers Australia (TRA) are an Australian based organisation who aim to keep textiles out of landfill, investing in partnerships to find circular solutions to Australia’s textile recycling problems. TRA have recycled various school uniforms in the past, alongside retailers such as Aldi and Woolworths, fashion customers Seed, French Connection and Uniqlo, along with Sheridan.

There have onshore and offshore solutions for textiles. Onshore solutions see TRA mechanically shred and use the uniforms as furniture filler. Offshore solutions involve mechanical fibre-to-fibre recycling. By recycling used uniforms in this way, the company is avoiding the disposal of textiles in landfills, which have negative environmental impacts. The various yarns make a variety of recycled products such as totes, cushions, gloves, socks, rugs, throws, blankets, felts, underlay, insulation, motor vehicle seat stuffing and more.

Raise Dough: Bake a Difference

A group of enterprising Year 10 students are bringing their Commerce idea to life with the Raise Dough: Bake a Difference fundraiser set for Monday 25 March.

When: Monday 25 March at recess, Fahl Garden, Senior Campus

What: Bake Sale

How to get involved: Drop off your baked goods to the Secondary School staffroom in the morning and enjoy a selection of sweet treats at recess.

Make a SunDay FunDay out of baking together as we get ready for the Easter long weekend. Remember to:

  • Avoid using any nuts or nut products
  • Label any tupperware so it can make its way back to you
  • Label Dairy and Gluten Free options

In Commerce last year the students were given as assortment of challenges from real-world organisations. One of our partners was Raise Foundation. Raise do youth mentoring in schools for at risk 13–15-year olds, mentoring involves matching a trusted and trained adult with a young person over a set period of time. The adults effectively fill the young person’s backpack with a selection of tools and strategies they can go back to time and time again throughout their life. A perennial problem for Raise is securing the funds to train mentors and provide the program to young people in need. It costs $2000 to mentor one young person, the impact of which will be felt over a lifetime.

One of our Year 9 teams pitched the fundraiser, Raise Dough: Bake a Difference. The team at Raise loved it so much they sought the School’s blessing to use the tagline with their corporate sponsors and it has already gone on the raise over $3000 at a single event. Redlands students are now trying their hand at organising and executing their own idea. They have received mentoring from the Head of Marketing and Community at Raise, written their strategy and designed their advertisement maintaining fidelity of the brand identity of Raise.

We are delighted to support Kira Delaney, Isobel Campbell, Sofia Whatmough, Jessica McKeown, Alanah Winder and Lucinda Maher in their endeavours.

Student-led Chapel

Last Friday 9M delivered our Chapel service, continuing to delve into the theme of ‘love’ and the many ways we can understand the nature of love.

Subject Focus – Commerce

Redlands welcomed back recent graduates, Alyssa and Elina, this week. Our Year 9 students enjoyed hearing firsthand about their experiences in the Bachelor of Accounting (BAcc) program at UTS.

Alyssa and Elina engaged in insightful discussions about the BAcc program, highlighting its unique aspects compared to other university degrees. Our students were particularly interested in learning about unexpected costs associated with university life, managing study hours and balancing part-time work.

Recognizing the importance of financial literacy, we transitioned into assisting students with their ‘first year out of home’ budgets as part of their Commerce task. It was wonderful to have excel wizards on hand!

Alumni engagement plays a vital role in guiding and inspiring the next generation. It was lovely to see the connections between students and our alumni, many of whom were well remembered.

Year 8

Week 7 – Back to the Real World

After an amazing week away in the Yarriabini National Park region, Yr 8 are back at their studies and well into their school routines. With Language assessments this week and an English assessment due tomorrow, it has been a busy return for students.

This week in Tutor Time we prioritised reflecting on our week away at camp, encouraging students to consider the moments they really enjoyed, recognise the challenges they faced and how they overcame them and look ahead to plan for how they might achieve the most out of future Outdoor Education opportunities.

Students engaged well with their camp reflections, acknowledging the challenging nature of camp, particularly the difficulty of hiking with heavy packs and managing the presence of pesky mosquitoes, whilst also appreciating some of the moments that brought them joy.

  • The most memorable moment was just spending time with my tent buddy talking and laughing; it was really nice.
  • I found camp really fun overall and sleeping in a tent fun. I enjoyed working as a team to figure out the map and which way to go on hikes.
  • I enjoyed surfing and canoeing as I love the water and it was fun and refreshing.
  • The most memorable moment for me was when we were at base camp, it was late at night and me and my friends were lying on the road stargazing. It made us appreciate the opportunities camp had given us, and how incredibly lucky about where we were that there was no light pollution.

Surfing was certainly a great highlight for many, allowing students time to relax in the water, catch some waves and have a laugh with friends. Our next experience away will be next year on the new Moonbah Experiential Learning program and I look forward to seeing the growth the cohort will gain through their time at the High Country Campus.

They say a picture says a thousand words, so below are a collection of camp memories.

SRC

Congratulations to our new Year 8 SRC representatives for 2024: Kate Rintoul (Cowper), Charlie Lee (Dumolo), Jack Reid (MacDouall) and Lily Musgrave-Kresa (Roseby). These students have shown great responsibility to put their hands up to support their peers and the School and will no doubt achieve some wonderful things over the next year in their representative roles.

Supporting International Women’s Day

Recently, we have conducted a range of events at the Secondary School to support International Women’s Day. A big shout out to Liv Law and Mack Willis who both volunteered to support school initiatives, helping with ushering and welcoming guests to a morning breakfast and guest speaker session. They were both really engaged and friendly throughout all of it and enthusiastic about supporting the cause.

Friendships

As your children embark on this exciting journey through adolescence, friendships will become increasingly important in their lives. Navigating friendships in Secondary School can sometimes feel like a significant challenge. We are encouraging Yr 7 students to consider the following, while navigating their own friendship journeys.

  • Be Yourself: Authenticity is key.
  • Find Common Ground: Common ground provides a solid foundation for friendship.
  • Be Inclusive: Be inclusive and accepting towards others.
  • Set Boundaries: Establish healthy boundaries in friendships.
  • Be Kind: Emphasise the importance of kindness and empathy in all interactions.

Student Leadership

I firmly believe that all students have the capacity to show leadership in a range of settings and I have been pleased to see many instances of this across the first part of the year. One recent example was in the playground where a group of Year 6 students, without prompting, gave up their time to help much younger students shoot baskets, much to the delight of those Prep School children. A simple act but one that displayed the essence of good leadership which in my view comes down to putting others before self, in other words servant leadership.

To support our students to develop their leadership skills, at times we run targeted programs. Last Friday Year 5 students took part in a workshop, facilitated by Cameron Brown from ‘Explore, Discover, Act’ to further their understanding of leadership and to instil associated skills and characteristics.

On 26 March, Year 6 students will also participate in a leadership workshop to be run by David King who is a leadership coach to the ACT Brumbies and Australian Wallaroos Rugby. Through a series of interactive teamwork activities and problem-solving trials we aim for our Year 6 cohort to develop and agree their 2024 mission as they provide student leadership and role modelling to the rest of the school. To provide ongoing support and advice, senior staff and I are running regular “Lessons in Leadership” sessions with the Year 6 cohort this year.

I am pleased to acknowledge and thank a number of Year 6 students who have taken on additional responsibilities to support our Library, Wellbeing and Technology programs.

NAPLAN

This week Year 3 and Year 5 students have participated in NAPLAN testing. I have been impressed by the calm approach our students have demonstrated. They have all shown a great deal of maturity and focus and it’s clear they take their education seriously. Their ability to handle the pressure of more formal assessment will serve them well in the future.

Harmony Day

On Thursday 21 March we celebrate Harmony Day on the Junior Campus. Harmony Day is an Australian government initiative designed to celebrate our culturally diverse nation starting with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples who have called this land home from the beginning. We are asking students and staff to wear their normal school uniform with a touch of orange as this is the official Harmony Day colour, for example with shoelaces, hair ribbons, socks, ties, bracelets or handmade Harmony Day badges. Consider it “accessorising” with orange!  Anyone who forgets can make a wrist band outside the canteen from 8am. No hair or face paint is to be worn or orange-coloured clothes. Later in the term on International Day there will be an opportunity for students to wear traditional or other culturally appropriate clothes.  One of the special things about Redlands is our culturally diverse community. We have much to celebrate, learn and take pride in. Harmony Day is an opportunity to have conversations at home and at school about our cultural heritage and identity. We look forward to helping our students grow in their appreciation of our diverse and unique community.

Harmony Week

Monday 18 – Sunday 24 March

A Message from Miss McKenzie

Harmony Week is next week! Thursday 21 March we will celebrate Harmony Day on the Junior Campus.  Harmony Day is an Australian government initiative that is designed to help us celebrate our culturally diverse nation beginning with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples who have called this land home from the beginning. We are asking students and staff to wear a touch of orange as the official Harmony Day colour. This includes normal school uniform and a touch of orange, like shoelaces, sneakers, hair ribbon, socks, tie or handmade harmony day badges and bracelets. Consider it “accessorising” with orange. Anyone who forgets can come and make a wrist hand out of paper at the tables outside the canteen from 8am. No hair or face paint is to be worn or orange-coloured clothes please. There will be an opportunity on International Day to wear traditional or other culturally appropriate clothes.

One of the special things about Redlands is that we are a culturally diverse community. We have much to celebrate, learn and take pride in. Harmony Day is an opportunity to open up conversations at home and school where we choose to share our cultural heritage and identity by listening with respect and interest to the stories of others. We can share songs, photos, stories, language and hospitality. Harmony Week might look like sharing food with another family one evening that is indicative of your cultural heritage. Teaching a friend a greeting in your home language or having a conversation about how we speak about others from cultures different to your own. Whatever it is we look forward to help students grow in their appreciation of our diverse and unique community.

Calling Parent Volunteers!

International Day 9 April

The wonderful Redlands International Day will be held on 9 April. This is a day for us to celebrate the rich international flavour that makes Redlands the diverse and inclusive community that it is.

As always, we would love to welcome parents into our classrooms who would like to share their own unique culture with our students. This may take the shape of storytelling, books, costumes, music. dancing or art and craft experiences.

If you would like to come in and share with your child’s class and grade between 11am-1pm, please get in touch with your specific Year Group coordinator (Ms Knox, Mrs Hepers or Mrs Eggleton) and they will be able to coordinate the activities and volunteers.

We are also hoping that some our families will once again share special food with the children at lunchtime. Last year this was a big hit and the students loved experiencing different tastes from around the globe. Please get in touch with me directly if you would like to be share in our lunchtime global feast.

Upcoming Events

Prep School Learning Conversation Week

Monday 18 March – Friday 22 March

Earlier this week all prep families were provided with information regarding times and booking instructions for Prep Learning Conversations. This 15-minute face-to-face conversation with your child’s class teacher will be an opportunity for you to discuss where your child is at currently in their learning and where to next in their 2024 journey, both academically and pastorally. It is a ‘snapshot in time’ discussion and we call it a ‘conversation’ for that reason! Can I please encourage you to reach out to any specialist teachers or myself directly if you would like a 15 minute catch up.

Raise Dough: Bake a Difference

What: A bake sale for Raise Foundation
When: Monday 25 March lunchtime (classes will be staged)

How can we be involved: Get together and spend Sunday Funday baking your favourite treats!

  • Please label any Tupperware containers so they can come back to you.
  • Drop off on Monday morning in the Prep Meeting Room.
  • No nuts or nut products to be used and label any Dairy of Gluten Free options.
  • Bring gold coins in if you would like to buy any cakes!

Junior Campus families and students are encouraged to support this Year 10 student initiative to raise awareness and donations for Raise Foundation.

Raise provides youth mentoring to 13–15-year-old students around Australia. These young people are grappling with issues like anxiety, depression, loneliness and bullying. With 1 in 4 young people saying they feel lonely all or most of the time, there’s never been a better time to support the work of Raise Foundation.

Not only are we providing access to a trained mentor, we are supporting our Year 10 Redlands students who devised this fundraising initiative in their Commerce group project last year. Raise Foundation loved the concept so much they wanted to use it immediately. We have just heard word that one of their corporate partners utilised our students’ concept and raised $3000 in a single event! That’s enough to sponsor 1.5 entire mentor/mentee programs. Let’s see if we can do better!

Uniform Recycling

Textile Recyclers Australia (TRA) has been selected as our uniform recycling partner following a comprehensive review of available options in 2023. TRA will commence the collection of unwanted Redlands uniforms in Week 7 of Term 1, with each year level having a specific day to bring in their unwanted uniforms. Bin collections will be monitored, so please ensure only requested items are brought it, or they will be sent back home. Any non-Redlands branded uniforms can be taken to your local charity bin for reuse, or to H&M and Zara (who offer used clothing recycling).

Harmony Day

Harmony Week is next week! On Thursday 21 March we will celebrate Harmony Day on the Junior Campus.  Harmony Day is an Australian government initiative designed to help us celebrate our culturally diverse nation beginning with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples who have called this land home from the beginning. We are asking students and staff to wear a touch of orange as the official Harmony Day colour. This includes normal school uniform and a touch of orange, like shoelaces, sneakers, hair ribbon, socks, ties or handmade Harmony Day badges and bracelets. Consider it “accessorising” with orange.

Harmony Week might look like sharing food with another family one evening indicative of your cultural heritage. Teaching a friend a greeting in your home language or having a conversation about how we speak about others from cultures different to your own. Whatever it is we look forward to help students grow in their appreciation of our diverse and unique community.

International Day

The wonderful Redlands International Day will be held on 9 April. This is a day for us to celebrate the rich international flavour that makes Redlands the diverse and inclusive community that it is.

As always, we would love to welcome parents into our classrooms who would like to share their own unique culture with our students. This may take the shape of storytelling, books, costumes, music. dancing or art and craft experiences. Please speak to your class teacher if you would like to share with the class

Rugby

Welcome to the 2024 season, We encourage all parents and students to have Pulse notifications “on” so that they are up to date with all information for the season as it is released!

Students should now have sessions present in their student calendar for the remainder of Term 1. We begin field sessions this Thursday 14  March, as per student calendar.

Each student within the Rugby program will have the following requirements:

2 Training Sessions per week. (Tuesday and Thursday afternoon sessions) and Saturday game commitment.

Students are encouraged to attend the Fitness Centre more regularly to complement their development within the sport. The Fitness Centre is open to all each morning.

Please note, Opens Rugby will have an extra compulsory Fitness Centre commitment. This is also scheduled on the students’ calendar.

Trainings

Students are to wear full Redlands sports uniforms. Students are to bring footy boots (no metal studs) and mouthguards to each session. If students play in any other protective wear they are encouraged to bring these to training – headgear/ shoulder pads.

Students will be unable to participate in contact drills without mouthguards.

To Note

Season 2024 will see a change to the tackle height rule for all levels of Community Rugby across Australia. We’re thrilled to share that the tackle height has been reduced to below the sternum, making Rugby Union safer and reducing the risk of concussion significantly. These new rules have been trialled across the world including in NZ, England, France and have seen really positive results.

All rugby students will undergo concussion briefing of updated school policies before the end of Term 1. This will also be communicated with parents/careers.

We are aiming to provide opportunities in both 15s and 7s format this season. A format update and draft draw will be provided as soon as it is communicated from the ISA.

Please make use of the free tickets from Waratahs home fixtures this season! (Check Pulse Rugby page).

If students are unable to attend their scheduled fixtures/training sessions they need to complete the Redlands Sport Absentee Form, this can be found on either:

Summer Rep Sport Students Only

As you would be aware your child has had their final training session this week and will have their final match on Saturday for their Term 1 Summer Sport (Basketball, Girls Football, Tennis and or Touch Football).

Your rep season for rounds 7 through to 12 will recommence in Term 4. Basketball and Touch Football jerseys will need to be returned to the sport office next week. A separate reminder will be sent to those families.

Commencing next week (Wednesday 20 March) your child will now be involved in Athletics preparation and this will continue until the last week of Term 1. It is listed in your child’s activities on the Redlands App as JS Activities Prep.

Students are to wear their sports uniform as normal (joggers, hat and water bottle) no additional equipment is required.  They will be transported to Rotary Memorial Athletics track, Mowbray Rd, for their sport where they will undertake a program of instruction and participation for Athletics covering 50m, 100m, 200, 400m, 800, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus events over the four weeks.

If you are one of those Summer Rep families who normally collect their child from their sport venue you may continue to do the same from Rotary Field just prior to bus boarding at 3:00pm. All other students will return to school for a normal 3:20pm dismissal time.

The students are very excited about this program and will prepare them for their upcoming units of Athletics in their PE classes next term.

Summer Non-Rep Students only: Your season of Non-Rep Sport (Swimming, Surfing, Sailing, Gymnastics, Tennis, Kayaking, etc) will continue as normal each Wednesday until the rest of the term.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video: Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

HICES Swimming

Congratulations to all our swimmers who participated at the HICES Swimming Championships today at Homebush. Plenty of individual PBs and some great relay times.

Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Paul Kelly Cup AFL Yr 5 & 6 Students

Thank you to those families who have completed the expression of interest for the AFL PKC. Named in honour of Sydney Swans legend and New South Wales footballer Paul Kelly, the cup is the Premier primary school AFL competition in the state. If we get enough interest will be entering 1 boys team and 1 girls team in the competitive competition which is a higher division than the ‘participation division’.

To select these teams we are currently inviting students in Years 5 & 6 to trial for a place in these teams. Each team will be capped at 16 players.  Please note not everyone who signs up will make a team. If you are interested in registering to trial for the team please complete the registration form which can be found here.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Sport Nominations

There are some sports that Redlands do not have a pathway through in our competition (IPSHA) but allow use to participate in at a higher level. For more information, please see Redlands Pulse as some nominations close this term. Nominations are only open to those students in Year 5 and 6 in 2024.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Year 8 “Caught in the Act”

Year 8 has come back from camp and is straight into a whirlwind of devising and rehearsing for their performance assessment in Week 10. Starting from a theme of friendship and a basic line of dialogue, students are embarking upon creating a completely new and original piece of theatre. It is their first foray into rehearsed performance, and the students have thrown themselves in with vim and vigour. They started this week with constructing some tableaux (freeze-frames) as a jumping off point for their pieces – pictured above.

Music

Instrumental Competition

On Monday this week, we were delighted to listen to the incredible instrumental talent of Years 7-12 across three divisions. It was amazing to hear an incredibly high standard, and have them be adjudicated by the  Music Educator and Music Director, Barry Warmsley. He had the impossible task of adjudicating the competitive display of talent and provided valuable feedback for our performers.

Many thanks go to the staff involved in bringing it together, including Mr Jason Xu, our Head of Bands and Small Ensembles, Ms Kirsty Hales, our Senior Administrator, and Dr Jeremy Eskenazi, our Resident Associate artist, who spent many hours rehearsing and performing with the competitors. We would also like to thank all of our audience members for the evening, and the Friends of Music for providing food to fuel the competitors before their big performances!

The prize-winners of the competition can be found below. Well done to all competitors!

A reminder for Ensemble Preparation

It has been a wonderful start to the year in our Ensembles across both campuses! We would like to continue this momentum by encouraging the following important routines:

  • Being on time: We aim to start the first warmup at the start time of the rehearsal. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to allow for setup time.
  • Being prepared with equipment: Every week students should have their instrument, music in a folder and a pencil. Being prepared is crucial for students to get the most out of each rehearsal.
  • Home practice: School rehearsals are a time to work on ensemble skills such as togetherness, dynamics, articulations, and bowings. It is expected that students practise their music every week to enable them to be confident in the group rehearsals. It’s a great idea to take any tricky passages to private lessons for extra help.
  • Attendance: Students are expected to attend all rehearsals throughout the year, except when absent from school or prior notice has been given to the Music Department. Please email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au or seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au for absences.

Here to help!

Keep your eye on Pulse and the MUSIC EVENTS page to ensure key dates are all on the family calendar and reach out to your campus Music Office if we can assist in any way.
