Year 7

7UPs – Reflecting on who we are Today

As Yr 7 edge ever closer to the end of their first year of Secondary School, we have begun to use Tutor time as a space to reflect on ourselves and our interests, and consider our successes and areas of growth for the year.

As part of this process, we have begun to film 7Up videos. Inspired by Up Series, which was a series of documentary films that followed the lives of 10 males and 4 females in England beginning in 1964 when they were 7 years old, and then had episodes filmed every 7 years (spanning 56 years!), our 7Up videos are designed to capture each Yr 7 at this current moment in their life (in brief 1 minute video). Of course, we will not be creating these every 7 years, but rather every year, so that by Yr 12, students will have a wonderful record of their growth and development across their Secondary School experience.

Students really enjoyed the chance to plan out and then answers questions like: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?; Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?; What is your favourite book and why?; and many more.

STEAM Week and Wednesday’s Waste Audit

Next week, Yr 7 will be involved in STEAM week. STEAM events begin on Monday 20 November and carry across Tuesday 21 November, with the theme ‘From Waste to Worth – How can we Transform and Reuse Waste for a Sustainable Future?’

Yr 7 will begin their STEAM days with an engaging guest speaker, Jo Taranto, who will be talking to the students around four themes – plastic waste, fast fashion and textiles, eWaste and food waste – and exploring their impact on society, as well as some of solutions that have been implemented for a more environmentally friendly future.

Students will then be working through the Design Thinking Process with the help and guidance of their Tutor, as well as Yr 10 students, who have volunteered to teach lessons, as well as being mentors for the younger students.

The STEAM experience began on Wednesday with a collection of Yr 7s volunteering to be part of a Waste Audit with students sorting, weighing and recording waste data to understand the waste habits of Yr 7 to 12 students on campus. According to students, it was a stinky but satisfying activity. Unfortunately, my sources tell me that we have some clear space for improvement in our waste and recycling habits!

Yr 7 Vaccinations – Round 2!

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.
