Issue 35 2023 Term 4 Week 6 - 16 Nov 2023

From the Principal

Throughout my educational career I have loved teaching English, especially poetry. Not only were both of my parents English teachers, but my mother and sister are both published poets and my brother is a university professor who specialises in Irish poetry. So, it is safe to say poetry is my family’s blood.

Therefore, I am sure it is not surprising to hear that I loved attending the Junior School Poetry Recital on Tuesday afternoon. It was wonderful to hear representatives from each class, and a number of teachers, expertly recite their poems (not an easy feat), and I was particularly impressed by those students and teachers who wrote their own poems and recited these for the audience. A special congratulations to Ms Longworth!

I believe poetry creates the space for us to dive deeply between the lines and the words so that we can discover our own thoughts, feelings and meanings. However, it is not just poetry, but all the other many and varied creative pursuits that Redlands offers which allow students to open their hearts, minds and souls in new and often passionate ways.

Earlier in the year, my son returned from a semester abroad travelling overseas. He was sharing with me one of the highlights from his trip, standing on the Kerry Cliffs in Ireland watching the Atlantic Ocean crashing on the spectacular coast below. In trying to describe the experience to me he reflected, “Dad, unfortunately words or a picture can’t properly capture the moment. But it was then that I realised why poets write poetry.”

That’s the best definition of poetry I have heard and why I love it, too.

Today I will be attending the Prep and Senior Dance Academy End of Year Performances. These performances are the culmination of a year’s worth of training and rehearsals, and I can’t wait to see our dancers shine on the stage. (I heard the Junior Performance last night was outstanding!)

I also want to recognise our Head of Redlands Dance Academy, Gilly Revie, not only for her leadership of the Dance Academy this year, but also on her role of “Queen” in the Australian Ballet’s Swan Lake for their upcoming Sydney season. Congratulations, Gilly.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome our Alumni community (our Redlanders) back onsite late last week where School memories and reconnections were shared and celebrated by those attending 20, 30 and 40 year reunions. Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally. We continue to ensure the important connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities and a quarterly newsletter. We greatly value the relationships we build with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School.  For more information on our reunions, check out the Foundation section in today’s Note Day.

The first meeting of the newly formed committee of the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) was held earlier this week along with the Annual General Meeting of the Heads of Friends of Groups (FoG).  The School is so grateful for the volunteer parents within these important groups who, along with our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Class and Year Group parents, continue to keep us informed, included and connected as we head into the social season of events and activities along with planning and preparation for 2024. There are still a number of community, class and year group events to run and these can all be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlanders Back on Campus

The Redlands Learning Hub on the Senior Campus, which opened in 2020, had the excited buzz of more than 100 Redlanders sharing memories and reconnecting last Friday night, as we celebrated the 20, 30 and 40 year milestone reunions.

It was fascinating to listen to the stories of the very first boys to attend the School when it became coeducational back in 1978. It was special to see several attendees who were not only past students, but also current or future parents; and one multigenerational Redlands family within our community goes back over 100 years.

A tour of recent developments including the Redlands Learning Hub, the Roseby Building (home to our Science laboratories), the Edwards Auditorium and ending with the Fahl Garden (the outdoor area in front of the Learning Hub), which always creates a very special atmosphere lit up in the background. There were many group photos were taken with this impressive backdrop.

All these developments would not be possible without contributions of many generations. We are grateful for everyone’s support past and present! More information can be found here.

Redlanders AGM

The Redlanders Alumni Association AGM took place on Tuesday 14 November at 6pm in the Liggins Boardroom. Our Principal Sean Corcoran updated the group on recent developments, acknowledged the contributions of our alumni community and welcomed all the assistance initiated by the Association this year.

Thank you to President Natalie Davies, RL 1987 and current Year 12 parent, who has led the Committee over the last year. We greatly appreciate the time and work involved and are grateful for your enthusiasm and leadership.

It was privilege to be joined by Board Director Amy Cheung RL 1990, who spoke of why she is so proud to serve as a member of the Redlands Board, and that alumni representation is important for the good governance of the School.

Mr Corcoran, assisted with the election of the Committee and Office bearers for 2024. Congratulations to the 2024 Committee and we look forward to working with you to further enhance our Alumni program and celebrate 140 Years of Redlands next year.

The work and support of the Redlanders Alumni Association highlights the strategic focus for our alumni relations:

  • Demonstrate benefits of Alumni network
  • Create opportunities for Secondary School students and Young Alumni [Industry visits, Mentoring and building networks, and Guest Speakers]
  • Showcase Alumni across segments and regions on social media
  • Grow international and regional connections

Redlands Parents and Friends

Friends of Touch Rugby

Friends of Groups are a subset of the RPFA made up of interested parents who support the activities in a particular sport or performing art within the School. We currently have Friends of Basketball, Dance, Drama, Football, Hockey, Music, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing and Snowsports and now (drum roll) Friends of Touch (FoT). For more information on these groups and contact information, please click here.

We are very excited to welcome Friends of Touch Football to the Redlands “Friends of” family! Touch Football continues to grow in popularity as a summer sport option with 140 students participating in 2023, a growth of 30% over the past three years. This year Redlands is fielding 9 girls teams and 3 boys teams, with the prospect of performing well across many divisions.  Friends of Touch will assist Jordan Parsonage (Director of Touch Football & Rugby) with in season activity, as well as organising the inaugural Friends of Touch End of Year Presentation Dinner in early 2024! If you’d like to be part of Friends of Touch community please email Friends of Touch with the title “FoT Mailing List.”

New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our Christmas lunch is planned for Thurs 30 Nov, where we will be discussing Mans’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet Your Class Parents

Class Parents (CP) play a pivotal role in building connections and fostering a supportive social spirit among parents and children outside the classroom. From welcoming new families, organising class playdates and events to facilitating communication, these dedicated superstars are the backbone of Redlands community. Follow this series each week to meet your 2023/24 Parent Coordinators and Class Parents, put a face to a name and discover what they do. AND keep an eye out for opportunities to join the team!

Nancie Pageau, Secondary School Class Parent Coordinator

Kiddos: Remie Gibbs, Year 10 (Alex Gibbs, Class of 2022)

CP Five with Nancie

If your role as a Senior School Class Parent Co-ordinator had a superhero name what would it be? Why?

Buzzing Juggler! To represent the superpowers of enhanced charisma and facilitation.

Why did you decide to be a Class Parent?

When we came to Redlands in 2015 (ok, the kids had been at Redlands House North Harbour from 2007-2011) I was “thrown under the bus” to be a Year 5 Class Parent as “a great way to integrate and get to know people”.  Thankfully, it was sold correctly and I’ve made some wonderful friends as a result of being involved.  A favourite moment was the 2016 Spring Fair book sale, a bonding event filled with lots of laughs.

Why would you encourage other parents to volunteer for this role?

As Class Parent Coordinator, I help bridge communication between the school and all the Year Parents. I have the opportunity to engage with the parent community across all years at different events. It’s always wonderful to see new friendships grow as groups come together.

I interact with the School to provide information and support for issues that are year-specific as well as cross all Year Groups. This year we held a brilliant information session run by the Deans of IB and HSC to “bust the myths of IB and HSC”.  This was developed in response to parent queries post-results and is being rolled out across the School.

If you could trade places with your child/ren for a day, what aspect of their world would you most want to experience?

I would love to be able to spend a day in Redlands classrooms.  When we did our tour of the School many years ago, we looked into a Language class being led by a very inspiring teacher and I remember wishing could join the lesson.

If you were asked to write a survival guide for new Class Parents, what would be your two top tips?

???? Be organised

???? Keep your ears and eyes open

Parent Power Needed: Join the Team

Nancie is looking for a Secondary School parent to partner with her in 2024 as the Class Parent Coordinator. All you will need is a sense of fun, enjoy people wrangling, a Working With Children Check and have a spare couple of hours a week. Contact Nancie to have a chat about the volunteer role via the RPFA.

Careers Framework

We are delighted to share with you our Redlands Careers Framework. This year the focus has been on developing a continuum throughout the School’s Careers program in the Secondary School. Support for our Yr 9 Entrepreneurs

Last week, Yr 9 participated in an experience project where they were challenged to improve the Christmas experience for people in our communities who are in need of support. One of the student-devised pitches was around the concept of gift boxes for women at Bayside Women’s Shelter. While children are typically the sole focus at Christmas time, our Yr 9 student team elected to focus on the women and mothers who frequently carry the emotional labour of Christmas. Their idea was a curated box put together by Redlands students to let women know that we see them and that they too are deserving of some luxuries.

In a time of seemingly unrelenting stories and statistics about the number of women who experience domestic violence and abuse we are proud to support our Redlands students who are turning despair into tangible action.

To deliver on their project, they are asking for help from the Redlands community. Redlands will collect the funds on their behalf and facilitate the creation of the gift boxes. We will also assist them in personally delivering the boxes to Bayside.

Support via Donation Today

I am looking forward to seeing our sailors in the Redlands Cup Regatta on Saturday and welcoming parents to the following Senior Studies Evening on Monday night.

If it excites you to know how things work, a degree in mechanical or mechatronic engineering could be for you. Mechanical engineers use a knowledge of movement to design and improve mechanical components and systems. This is a diverse area in high demand, particularly as we try to find solutions for problems like climate change and supply chain issues. Similarly, mechatronic engineers have a vital role to play in the age of advancing technologies. They combine mechanical, electronic, and software engineering to create computer-controlled machines (yep, that includes robots).

Our degrees emphasise practical learning, industry experience, and ensure that you graduate ready for the work force with full accreditation. Join our webinar to find out more about mechanical and mechatronic engineering at Sydney. Find out More

Yr 9 Christmas Challenge

Last week, Yr 9 participated in an experience project where we were challenged to improve the Christmas experience for people who struggle to enjoy the holiday season. One of the student devised pitches was around the concept of gift boxes for women at Bayside Women’s Shelter. While children are typically the sole focus at Christmas time, we wanted to let women know that we see them and that they too are deserving of some luxuries.

We have been confronted by the recent stories and shocking statistics in the media about the number of women who experience domestic violence and abuse. This is an issue that impacts everyone, from every socio-economic background, every cultural and linguistic group and every age. We want to play some small part in acknowledging the situation and turn feeling helpless about it into feeling empowered to act.

To deliver on this project, we are asking for help from the Redlands community. We are asking you to donate so we can create our carefully curated gift boxes and deliver them to women at Bayside. Our boxes will include some of the essentials and some special items to make these women feel valued and provide them with gifts that they most likely wouldn’t be able to buy for themselves.

Redlands will collect the funds on our behalf and then we will use the money to create the gift boxes we have devised. We will then personally deliver the boxes to Bayside.

With thanks,

Yr 9 Redlands students

Project Rockit Workshop

On Wednesday 15 November, Year 9 welcomed the team from Project Rockit.

Who are Project Rockit?

Project Rockit is a nationwide grassroots movement of young people united to build a world where kindness and respect thrive over bullying, hate and prejudice.

Their school workshops are designed to support students, bringing young and passionate presenters to Redlands for a high impact learning experience.

Last time Project Rockit visited Redlands, they worked with our current Year 12 students when they were in Year 9. Year 12 had a fantastic experience.

Year 9 were asked to follow these engagement expectations:

1. Engage with your presenters by giving them your eyes and ears

2. Listen with open hearts and minds

3. Contribute with your voices

The Yr 9 Program Details – Rewrite

The Rewrite program is a powerful development opportunity for senior students to develop literacy and understand how they can take action on diversity, prejudice, discrimination and unconscious bias.

As part of this workshop, students were presented with this prompt: “Each one of us has the potential to create real change in the world, by choosing to challenge prejudice everyday.” In response, Year 9 students enthusiastically tackled stereotypes and prejudice, holding a mirror to themselves and considering how they might work collectively towards addressing these in a way that’s bold and inclusive.

Why Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships Is Important

This week during Tutor time, Year 9 students have been delving into why building and sustaining healthy relationships is important to student wellbeing and social and emotional development.

Below is a sample of the questions students brainstormed as a group, creating visible lists around the classroom:

1.  What is a respectful relationship?

2. What are the qualities of a good person?

3. What are the qualities you (or someone you know) look for in a friend?

4. What are your rights and responsibilities as a part of a family?

5. What rights and responsibilities do you have in a relationship?

7UPs – Reflecting on who we are Today

As Yr 7 edge ever closer to the end of their first year of Secondary School, we have begun to use Tutor time as a space to reflect on ourselves and our interests, and consider our successes and areas of growth for the year.

As part of this process, we have begun to film 7Up videos. Inspired by Up Series, which was a series of documentary films that followed the lives of 10 males and 4 females in England beginning in 1964 when they were 7 years old, and then had episodes filmed every 7 years (spanning 56 years!), our 7Up videos are designed to capture each Yr 7 at this current moment in their life (in brief 1 minute video). Of course, we will not be creating these every 7 years, but rather every year, so that by Yr 12, students will have a wonderful record of their growth and development across their Secondary School experience.

Students really enjoyed the chance to plan out and then answers questions like: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?; Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?; What is your favourite book and why?; and many more.

STEAM Week and Wednesday’s Waste Audit

Next week, Yr 7 will be involved in STEAM week. STEAM events begin on Monday 20 November and carry across Tuesday 21 November, with the theme ‘From Waste to Worth – How can we Transform and Reuse Waste for a Sustainable Future?’

Yr 7 will begin their STEAM days with an engaging guest speaker, Jo Taranto, who will be talking to the students around four themes – plastic waste, fast fashion and textiles, eWaste and food waste – and exploring their impact on society, as well as some of solutions that have been implemented for a more environmentally friendly future.

Students will then be working through the Design Thinking Process with the help and guidance of their Tutor, as well as Yr 10 students, who have volunteered to teach lessons, as well as being mentors for the younger students.

The STEAM experience began on Wednesday with a collection of Yr 7s volunteering to be part of a Waste Audit with students sorting, weighing and recording waste data to understand the waste habits of Yr 7 to 12 students on campus. According to students, it was a stinky but satisfying activity. Unfortunately, my sources tell me that we have some clear space for improvement in our waste and recycling habits!

Yr 7 Vaccinations – Round 2!

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program. The last clinic for this year will be held for Yr 7 on Friday 24 November 2023 from 10.35-12.55pm. The vaccines offered at this clinic are:

  • Yr 7: Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (dTpa)
  • Yr 7: Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This is a catch-up opportunity if your child did not have the vaccine at a school clinic earlier this year.

Vaccination will only be provided at school if parent consent has been received. To provide online consent for vaccination. Please visit their website. The consent deadline is 23 November 2023.

For further details, please visit Pulse.

Term 4 Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

Ballet and Dance Performance

What a wonderful way to spend an evening! Last night’s Junior School Performance of the Redlands Dance Academy End of Year Performance was such an uplifting occasion and at multiple times, I found myself moved by the quality of the show. The unbridled joy of our student dancers radiated from the stage as our girls and boys treated the audience to a high-quality performance.

I sometimes wonder whether my untrained (and maybe slightly biased) eye sees these types of shows through rose-coloured glasses so it was affirming to hear the same sentiments from Karen Martin, the former Head of Ballet and Dance at Redlands, whom I had the pleasure of sitting next to during the show.

We know that these special performances are the culmination of a huge amount of time, practice and dedication from our students, most ably guided by our Redlands Dance Academy staff and supported unwaveringly by their families; I extend my appreciation to all involved in whatever aspect for a spectacular performance.

15th Junior School House Poetry Recital

On Tuesday, we were thoroughly entertained at the 15th annual Junior School House Poetry Recital, an inspiring and engaging event for students, teachers and families.

This term, every Junior School student has been immersed in poetry having read, written, appreciated, critiqued and presented poems. With one representative selected from each Junior School class, the Junior School enjoyed a magical afternoon with our recitalists showing poise, charisma and confidence as they delivered their respective poems, many their own work, to the audience of students, teachers and their family.

The students also loved hearing poems delivered by Mr Corcoran, Ms Anagnostu, Ms Reinhold and Ms Longworth and I thank them for being part of this event. Congratulations to all of the students for their involvement this term and in particular to the students listed below who impressed the audience.

Junior School Speech Day 2024

As mentioned last term and again in the Term 4 welcome letter, this year’s Junior School Speech Day will take place at 11am on Wednesday 6 December at one of Sydney’s premier event spaces, The Star Event Centre, in Pyrmont.

All students are expected to attend this final formal occasion of the school year with every student performing at least one musical item on stage. Further details including arrival times for the event will be communicated to families next week. The event lasts for approximately 2 hours and culminates the school year at Redlands.

In each Junior School class, six prizes are awarded as outlined below:

  • Two prizes for Academic Effort and Achievement
  • Two prizes for Outstanding Approach to Learning
  • Two prizes for Citizenship

Class teachers award these prizes based on their observations over the year and in conjunction with feedback from specialist teachers who also teach them. In addition, there are some major prizes awarded in Yr 6 only. Students will be notified of prize winners at the start of Week 8 and all prizes will be presented at Speech Day, which will also be the occasion for the announcement of our 2024 student leaders.

Please note that every student will be required to have their school blazer for this formal event.

2024 New Student Orientation and Transition Day

Last Friday, we were excited to welcome over 50 new students who will join the Junior School in 2024 as part of their process of orientation into Redlands. Our current students welcomed their soon-to-be peers with warmth and friendship, as many of the new students commented on to me in the final session I spent with them. All of them left having made a new friend or two, an aim of both theirs and ours for the morning.

For part of the day, Yrs 2, 3, 4 and 5 also moved up a year to the Year Groups that they will be in next year. This allowed them some time with different teachers, new students, and begin to get a feel of new learning spaces and expectations. Students rotated around each classroom doing a series of engaging activities and from speaking to many students and observing them, I know that this time was hugely beneficial for many of them.

On the same day, our current Yr 6 students spent an important day on the Senior Campus as part of their transition to Secondary School next year. Joined by their parents for the first part of the day, I spoke with many of the group the next day who shared excitement about the opportunity to forge some new friendships with new students joining in Yr 7, spending time in a range of exciting specialist classes and also simply wandering around the Senior Campus and starting to familiarise themselves with soon-to-be new surroundings.

2024 Parent Topic Talks

Our termly parent topic talks led by our Student Wellbeing team have been extremely well attended this year and the team are already in the planning stages for 2024’s offerings. As ever, they are keen to hear from parents on topics that you are keen to hear more about and hence, if you have some suggestions, we would love to capture them via this very short survey.

HSC and IB Senior Studies Information Evening- this Monday 20 November

I am often asked by Junior School families about our Senior Studies offering at Redlands where in the final years of schooling, Redlands offers students the choice of either the HSC or IB pathways for students. Whilst it might feel a way off, I am pleased to share information about an upcoming Parent Information Evening for families from Redlands House to Yr 9 and know that this will be insightful for many of you as you look ahead for your child.

Community Christmas Carols

Anglicare Toys n’ Tucker

A message from Ms McKenzie:

Anglicare Toys and Tucker Campaign

It is the season of giving and a wonderful opportunity to help our young learners to share in the joy of giving. Each year Redlands partners with Anglicare Toys and Tucker Campaign.  Our aim is to make Christmas a time of celebration and fun for families and especially children in need in Sydney this festive season.

Please bring all gifts to either Prep or Junior School Receptions by Friday 1 December.
Thank you for your support of this important community opportunity to give.

Christmas Mufti

Students across the school have the opportunity to wear “Christmas Mufti “ on Tuesday28 November. We will have our Junior Campus Carols for K-6 students that morning and will be collecting Gold Coin donations for Anglicare. Mufti can be as simple as wearing a red t shirt or a Santa hat to wearing themed costumes.

Yr 2 Waste Audit

Yesterday a few of our Yr 2 sustainability warriors spent time in the Secondary School with other students conducting a waste audit. The students were able to sort rubbish into piles that were either recyclable or destined for land fill. As a result of the audit, it was clear that there is a positive effort to recycle at our school, but that there is still a lot of work to be done to reduce the use of plastics when it comes to food packaging.

Redlands is committed to the sustainability message and the embedding of good practices across the school community. Next week, Junior Campus, students and staff will take part varied activities that encourage positive sustainable action at school.

In the Prep School, our focus will be on turning off lights, ensuring we are using the correct recycling bins, looking and discussing how we can reduce the use of plastics around us, and our families will be asked to support a waste free lunch day on Tuesday 21 November for their children.

A waste free lunch is a lunch box that contains no throw away packaging. Everything is a waste free lunch box can be eaten, reused or composted. Having your child help put together their lunch box on this day would be a great activity to do with them. Not only would this make them feel important and independent, but it would also provide an opportunity for conversation together about sustainability and what it means to them. Thank you for your support in helping our prep students embrace sustainability.

2024 Parent Talks

This year our counsellors have presented four informative parent sessions for the Junior Campus community which were a in response to parent communication and conversations.

As we start to plan for 2024, the counselling team would like to hear from our community again.

To provide feedback on this year’s sessions and to suggest future topics, please take a moment to fill in the survey. Thank you for your support.

Kids Giving Back Program

Founded in 2012, Kids Giving Back is a not-for-profit organisation that provides volunteering opportunities for children, teens, and families across NSW. The core belief of Kids Give back is that there is no substitute for volunteering. It helps young people cultivate empathy, respect, resilience, and leadership skills and connect with their wider community. Above all, they see volunteering as a two-way street. It gives children the opportunity to change other people’s lives and their own.

When we empower children to help others, they ultimately gain as much as they give. Sometimes even more. Kids Giving Back is committed to instilling the value of service in the next generation. And developing the ongoing relationship between children and the broader community.

School holiday programs are the perfect chance to introduce your child to the world of volunteering and empower them to give back in an age-appropriate way. Over time there have been many Redlands students who have volunteered their time in their school holidays and my hope is that many more will.

In the recent September school holidays Eisen Chan (Yr 2) was one of 700 volunteers who helped in his community. We are very proud of Eisen in giving back to the community and I hope that he will encourage others to engage in similar initiatives.

If you would like to know more about the December 2023/January 2024 school holiday community programs, please keep an eye out on the Kids Giving Back website. School holiday programs | Kids Giving Back.

Yr 2 Has Been Busy!

Last week was a big week for our Yr 2 students as they started to navigate their final few weeks in the Prep school. The Yr 2 Disco, Cardboard Challenges both here and at a Shore, Orientation Day and many other opportunities having started to fill their days. They are certainly letting their light shine in so many ways.

It’s one thing for me to reflect on these activities but it is more important that the students themselves have their voice. Please enjoy reading some of their reflections.

Yr 2 Disco

I like this disco because we got candies – Sophia C

I loved working together on the cardboard challenge because we can all have a part and no one was left out – Leo

I like the disco because we got to dance together and see our parents. It was funny watching the teachers dance! – Amber

It was nice to visit a new school and make new friends, but it made me appreciate all the great things about Redlands – Isabel, Amber, Mio, Sophia

Hip, hip, hooray! The Year Two Disco has begun, everyone was so excited, they were crazy. We had a dance off, one Maca, two Maca, three Macarena. Then Luca took the lead in the conga line and it went a little crazy just between you and me! The conga lines were crashing because there were so many. Then the best song started, guess what it was? ‘It’s raining tacos, from out of the sky!’ Sadly, the disco came to an end but at the end we got sweets, water, juice and popcorn. – Avignon Craig

Hip, hip, hooray! The Year Two Disco day was finally here. The disco was as bright as a rainbow as the theme was, ‘Let your light shine bright’. People were dancing like they would never stop, then suddenly the Year Twos formed a conga line! After the Year 2 dance, the parents were let in and started to break it down with DJ Raphi on the screen, it was a blast! Since the disco ended, the Year Twos have never stopped and continue to party on! – Vivienne Cooksley

Hip, hip, hooray! The students were showing their best moves and Mr Price was the DJ. DJ Mr Price said it was time for the boys vs girls dance off. The girls went first, they were hard to beat, they got 8/10. The boys were going next and we got 7/10. Mr Price then said we could go and refresh with juice boxes, popcorn and cookies in our bright clothes. Hopefully we can do the disco next year again. – Luca Gambotto

Last Friday there was a burst of excitement as the disco was about to start. What could be better? As we went into the hall, we saw a mountain of candy on the table. Then we had a dance off, the girls won by 2 points. We built a conga line, I think we broke a record. At the end of the disco we had popcorn and juice. – Nicholas Ma

The Year 2 Disco was amazing! The Year 2s were allowed to choose songs like, ‘It’s Raining Tacos,’ and we also did a girls versus boys dance. Mr Price rated our dance moves fairly. Then we made the longest conga line in the world! Our parents came and had the best time of their lives so let’s dance on! – Archer Trautwein

The Fizzics Education Science Incursion

On Wednesday the Year Twos had an exciting science incursion, they learnt about planets and how they orbit. There were lots of cool things like a machine that let you hear almost anything, even a whisper! We made a tea bag rocket using fire and an empty tea bag. Guess what? It actually flew! We had the most exciting time! – Thorsen Kazimierczuk

The Cardboard Challenge

Tools down! Tools down! It was the cardboard challenge of the year, the Year 6 students helped the Year 2’s to build three dimensional shapes and showed them how to use the tools. We were presented with a challenge and had to build a wind-powered vehicle. Our team (James, Gordon and Jack) built a boat with wheels, it was controlled by a sail. It was big enough for one of us to fit in it. – George Cooper

Ready, Set, Go! As we rushed outside to the cardboard mountain, Gordon, Jack, George and myself thought of an idea to build a boat with wheels on the bottom. Before we started, the Year Six students showed us how to use the tools. We also had jobs, I was the designer, Gordon was the resource collector, Jack was the manager and George was the photographer. Tools down! Our design was made!

Vroom, Vroom went the bus, click went the seat belts and we were off to Shore School for the Cardboard Challenge. We put our bags against the wall and we gathered with the other students from Shore and Loreto. We then went off in groups and we practised with the tools. We made a flying car, we did it with two drivers. Then it was time to leave so we said our farewells and went back to school. – Haroo Choi

Secondary Sport

Instilling responsibility, respect and teamwork in teenagers participating in school sport is essential for their holistic development and future success. Responsibility teaches teenagers accountability for their actions, fostering a sense of ownership and discipline. In the realm of school sports, this translates to punctuality (being on time), commitment to training (showing up even if you don’t feel up to it) and adherence to the rules, all of which are habits that are transferable to academic and professional settings.

Respect is a cornerstone of positive social interactions and it is crucial to instill this value in teenagers engaged in sport. respecting coaches, teammates, opponents and officials contributes to a positive sporting environment. It encourages fair play, discourages unsportsmanlike behaviour and promotes a culture of inclusivity, fostering a sense of community within the school and sports programs.

Teamwork is a fundamental skill that extends beyond the sports arena. By working collaboratively towards a common goal in sports, teenagers learn to value each team member’s contribution and appreciate diverse perspectives. This skill is directly applicable to future environments where collaboration and cooperation are essential for success. In addition, teamwork enhances communication, leadership and conflict resolution skills, preparing teenagers for the challenges they may face in various aspects of life.

Throughout the Redlands sport programs we are working hard on instilling responsibility, respect and teamwork for all those involved, this work goes on beyond the sporting fields & courts. These values form the foundation of personal growth, social development and future success, providing teenagers with a well-rounded skill set that will serve them well in their academic, professional and personal endeavours.

“The most important quality I look for in a player is accountability. You’ve got to be accountable for who you are. It’s too easy to blame things on someone else.” Lenny Wilkens (Former NBA Coach)

In Term 4, all Redlands Sport Activities will continue to be through Pulse and the Redlands App.  Here you will be able to see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability-based teams, it is transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

  • ABILITY: in direct comparison to other students across the sport
  • ATTENDANCE: any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved
  • ATTITUDE: this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.
