Year 7

Bidding Farewell to Yr 12

It was an emotional week at Redlands as we bade farewell to our Yr 12 students, wishing them well as they embark on their final leg of HSC and IB Examinations. While Yr 7 and Yr 12 can sometimes seem a world apart, our Yr 7 cohort have really admired the great leadership of our Yr 12s, embodied in School Captains Dan and Josie, and the wonderful ‘Fall Forward’ culture they have inspired. Many of our cohort received fall forward awards this year and valued the recognition and encouragement they embodied.

Beyond that the Yr 12s have been wonderful day to day role models for our Yr 7s, supporting them in their first orientation day last year, and offering them words of wisdom to help them feel comfortable in their new Senior School routine. This term epitomised this with a collection of Yr 12s providing guidance to each of our Tutor groups based around the importance of Service Learning and offering advice for how to process assessment feedback successfully.

The School celebrated our Yr 12s and acknowledged their achievements on Wednesday in a farewell assembly in Dunnet Hall. Yr 7 also formed the tail-end of a lengthy guard of honour, cheering on Yr 12 as they moved out into the Fahl Garden after the assembly. We shall miss our Seniors and wish them all the best for their examinations and futures beyond Redlands.

Working Hard Until the End – Subject Insight: Science and Chinese

Ask anyone in Yr 7 and they will tell you it has been a busy term! I hope though, that they will also affirm that it has been a really valuable and worthwhile one through which they have learned many subject specific skills, refined their own executive functioning skills and become more confident tackling the range of tasks required of them in Secondary School, while also having space for a bit of fun while doing it all. Certainly, this was something I saw recently visiting 7Y Science and Yr 7 Chinese.

In Science they were being introduced to the value of microscopes as a way of seeing beneath the surface of things. Students enjoyed viewing a variety of slides from bones to leaves to insects exploring the extreme detail they could under the microscopes.

In Chinese, students engaged in a fun practical activity, creating bubble tea, and I was fortunate enough to be invited to the lesson to be a celebrity judge for bubble tea tasting! Students were given the ingredients by Ms Wang and the two teams had to race each other to create the best bubble tea, including Ms Wang’s freshly made tapioca pearls. I had never had bubble tea before – who knew it was so sweet!

Athletics – Junior Athlete of the Year and CIS

Recently, Redlands Athletics recognised its athletes of the year. A huge congratulations goes out to Liv Law who was awarded Junior Athlete of the Year, with some very convincing runs this year, particularly in the 800m and 1500m.

On Tuesday evening, the CIS Athletics Championships were also held at Sydney Olympic Park. Liv notably achieved 3rd place in both the 13 years 1500 and 800.

Congratulations also to Ari Abe-Apostolou, Gabriella Demian, Tristan Fournier Le Ray, Jacob Polo and Alex Taylor for their participation, efforts and hard work in their specific events.

UN Voice Competition

In Term 4, Redlands students have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming UN Youth Voice, which is an annual public speaking competition for students in Yrs 7-10. Voice provides delegates with the opportunity to present innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Happy Holidays

All that remains is to wish everyone the best for the upcoming holidays. I hope it is warm, but not too warm; fun, but responsibly fun; and full of wonderful moments of relaxation! We look forward to seeing a reinvigorated Yr 7 return for Term 4, commencing on Monday 9 October.

Term 4 Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 1: Term 4 commences Monday 9 October.
