Secondary Sport

As we begin our transition into summer sport I thought it would be a timely reminder about coaching mental preparation techniques for competition, essentially to optimise the students performance and ensure they can excel under pressure. This psychological aspect of training complements physical skills and can make the difference between a win and a loss.

We train our coaches to employ a range of strategies to enhance athletes’ readiness.

  • Visualisation – is a technique where athletes mentally rehearse their performance, imagining every detail of the competition, helping build familiarity and confidence.
  • Goal-setting – involves setting specific, measurable objectives, fostering motivation and direction.
  • Routines – developing routines helps athletes establish a sense of control and consistency. Pre-Game rituals can create a calming effect, allowing athletes to enter a focused state of mind. breath control and relaxation techniques are also crucial to manage stress and anxiety.
  • Self-Talk – positive self-talk combats self-doubt and instills confidence. coaches encourage athletes to replace negative thoughts with affirmations and constructive statements. Handling pressure involved teaching students to embrace it as a challenge rather than a threat.
  • Building Resilience – helps athletes understand that setbacks are part of the journey and offer tools to rebound stronger. mindfulness and meditation techniques enhance present moment awareness, improving concentration during high-stress situations.

Ultimately in order to lead students to peak performance during competitions it is important to tailor strategies into athletes’ individual needs, fostering mental toughness and creating that winning mindset.

‘Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength’

Bus Transport

When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Hockey

Friends of Hockey would like to thank all those who attended and especially those who helped with preparations for the Hockey End of Season Celebration night last Thursday.  It was a wonderful wrap up to a successful season.  Congrats to all award, raffle, trivia and guessing jar winners.  We’re looking forward to next year.

If you’ve enjoyed the Redlands season and would like to play more, there are myriad options for summer, winter and Rep hockey through local clubs.

  • Summer: The indoor season starts in Term 4 and registrations are already open for Wed and Fri competitions. It is a lot of fun and extremely popular. Players can register individually or as a team. There are also options for social 5-a-side competitions.
  • Winter: Club hockey is a great way to play more and develop skills. The most local clubs are Mosman and Manly and both offer a range of options from beginner’s sessions on grass to highly competitive matches on astro-turf.
  • For both indoor and field hockey, there are also opportunities for play for the Northern Sydney and Beaches Rep teams and play at State Championships.

For further information on any of these options please contact Ros Van Extel (Mosman Hockey Club) or Heidi Worner (Manly Hockey Club)

Rugby

A reminder to purchase your tickets for the End of Season function.

At this event we look forward to awards, captains address, a guest speaker & a short season wrap up from the coaching staff!
