Issue 26 2023 Term 3 Week 7 - 31 Aug 2023

From The Principal

One of my aims moving into the Principal role this year has been to reach out to members of our community to get authentic feedback on the School. While we have done this formally through various surveys of staff, students and parents (there are more of these to come with our parent community), I have also been doing this informally in individual and small group meetings with staff and students. Over the course of this year, I have been preaching that we are “too good not to be better” and these feedback sessions have assisted in highlighting specific areas for improvement.

At the beginning of the year, I set out to have a 15 minute individual meeting with each of our over 300 non-casual staff members at Redlands. While it has been a big undertaking and I will be racing to complete these meetings by the end of the year, it has also been one of the most rewarding aspects of my year to date as I have listened, learned and been inspired by the reflections and insights of our staff.

While the feedback has shone a light on specific areas for improvement, pleasingly, from what I have heard (and seen) from staff we are authentically living our Values, Mission and Vision as a school. Staff have reflected that what they love most about Redlands is our strong sense of community; our positive culture; our focus on the holistic development of students; our balanced approach of maintaining academic excellence while providing diverse opportunities for students to develop their individual passions; and our forward thinking and innovative approach to education.

Most inspiring for me is that when staff have reflected on what brings them the most satisfaction working at Redlands, the majority have mentioned the students – “making a small but significant impact on their lives”; “witnessing their ‘lightbulb’ moments”; “seeing their joy of learning and achievement on their faces”; “being a part of something that is bigger than me and positively supports our students”.

While I will continue to look for ways that we can be “better” as a school, it is also important to reflect on what is “good”, as well.

Redlands Parent/Carer Arnhem Land Midawarr Trip

Last week we informed our community about a truly unique opportunity for parents and carers to visit Arnhem Land for a cultural immersion with the Yolŋu community from Sunday 26 – Thursday 30 May 2024. After years of developing our relationship with the Yolŋu community through Culture College and providing this amazing experience to our students, we are now offering it to parents and carers.

You can reserve a place at our information evening on Thursday 14 September here. Places for the Arnhem Land trip will be limited so please express your interest to attend early to reserve a place.

Staffing Update

As I communicated earlier today, our esteemed Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha, will be leaving us at the end of the 2023 school year after eighteen years of dedicated service to Redlands. Ari’s warmth, commitment and genuine care for each individual will be greatly missed by the many students, staff, parents and alumni who he has positively impacted in so many ways. We look forward to having an opportunity to properly acknowledge and farewell him later in the year.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It was a pleasure to have our grandparents and special friends on the Junior Campus late last week.  Our students and staff were delighted and excited to host our guests in classrooms and around the Piazza during morning recess.  On Monday, we will continue the celebration of Father’s Day with coffee in the Piazza for our Junior and Prep School Dads. Wishing all our Dads a Happy Father’s Day for Sunday.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in running a Second Hand Uniform Sale this Saturday from 8.30am to 10.30am at 1 Monford Place (just around the corner from the Uniform Shop). This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.

A reminder that we will be hosting an information evening on the Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip scheduled on Thursday 14 September.  This session will provide more detailed information on this truly unique experience scheduled for May 2024 and offered exclusively to the Redlands community. This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. To reserve a place at our information evening please click here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Parents and Friends

We will be holding a secondhand uniform sale of summer uniforms on Sat 2 Sept from 8.30am to 10.30am at the RPFA storage unit at 1 Monford Pl, around the corner from the uniform shop. We are also looking into the possibility of another sale during the week in Week 9 – watch this space for more info. As usual, our secondhand uniform sales provide great value for families and also give each of us an opportunity to contribute to the clear benefits of recycling. In addition, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. We will only be accepting payments by EFTPOS. Please also remember to bring your own bags for your purchases.

While we wait for further clarification regarding the new school uniform, we do know that there will be a transition period – any summer uniforms purchased during this secondhand sale will be able to be worn for the two year transition period, through to Term 4 2025.

We are also working with Redland’s Sustainability team to determine the best strategy for recycling old uniforms. If you have good quality summer uniforms or sports to donate, please drop them off at the Uniform Shop. Otherwise, please hold on to your winter uniforms for the time being as both the RPFA unit and Uniform Shop do not have space for storage.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Our walk next week on Wed 6 Sept is around Centennial Park. Meet at The Greenhouse Café on Grand Drive at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Karen on 0492 501 926.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

Our next meeting is Mon 18 Sept at 10am. We will be discussing Babel by R.F. Kuang. We are now in the process of voting for the next books to read, so watch this space.

Feeling Anchored During Times of Distress

It’s a hectic time of the term for most members of the community. Whether we are managing our learning via assessment demands, our relationships with others and our changing self, the ongoing shifts which typically take place in our daily lives or something else such as competing demands or conflict, it’s important to be consciously aware of ourselves and others. At Redlands we use the terms ‘self-awareness’ and ‘social awareness’ as part of our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework and we’re committed to supporting our young people to develop and deepen their skills in these areas. As we approach R U OK Day on 14 September our student leaders are already considering and discussing ways to support each other to access necessary help for their mental health, when they need it. They want to support students to more consciously understand:

  • Help-seeking strategies
  • Who to ask for help
  • Where to go for support
  • How to let friends and adults know things are not okay
  • Responding to other people’s stress and distress
  • When young people should seek adult support for a friend in need

We like using anchors as metaphors. Anchors may be our values, our sense of self, our core belief systems or our support systems. To achieve positive physical and mental health, we need to be able to move with, but not be carried away by, the waves of life. We need to be anchored – to the things we know are certain. In this way, we can develop the capacity to tolerate distress in the knowledge that despite the vicissitudes of our daily life, there are certain things, like our values, our sense of self, or our support systems, which remain constant.

We like these images which represent old versus new ways of thinking about how we navigate stress and distress. Contemporary discourse teaches distress tolerance over resilience – we don’t simply withstand stress and distress like a fixed lighthouse, but we process and respond to the ‘stuff’ that life throws at us.

Recently the Pastoral Team developed some helpful cards for students and staff in support of our young people. Managing conflict is a normal part of life. Whilst we do our best to prevent situations of conflict for the students, we know they will inevitably find themselves in some form of interpersonal conflict at school. Supporting the students to navigate this has been made more helpful by the creation of these prompts, which provide a simple and logical framework to support students to articulate and process the conflict, be heard and move forward in a healthy way.

ROAR Breakfast Panel

Last Friday morning we held the inaugural ROAR Breakfast 2023, celebrating Relationships, Opportunity, Advocacy and Respect; discussion points requested by our wonderful cohort of Yr 12 women.

This breakfast was organised in parallel to a Man Cave session held last term for the young men of Yr 12. In listening intently to the needs of our Yr 12 cohort, we have facilitated a range of sessions, gendered and coeducational, to support their growth into adulthood and their transition to Yr 13. Specifically, our girls told us that they wanted an opportunity to hear the experiences of other young women, who they could relate to, and from whose advice and stories they could learn and grow. They told us they wanted to do this in an informal, adult environment which offered them a chance for sharing and reflection.

MC Katie Wightwick (Redlands 2022) posed thoughtful questions to our two panellists Angelique Wan and Lua Pellegrini, who responded with authenticity and openness, sharing their personal experiences since leaving secondary school.

Angelique Wan is the co-founder and CEO of Consent Labs, a youth-led not-for-profit that educates young people on consent and respectful relationships in schools and universities across Australia. Angelique co-founded Consent Labs when she was 19 and to-date Consent Labs has delivered programs to more than 50,000 people nationally. Angelique has been recognised as the 2022 NSW Young Woman of the Year, a 2022 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australian, a finalist for the 2021 Women of the Future and listed by Instagram as a Top 25 female entrepreneur.

Lua Pellegrini, a proud Wiradjuri woman who grew up on Darug country, was 2023 finalist for the NSW Young Woman of the Year Award and Chairperson of the NSW Youth Advisory Council from 2021-22.  Lua is a youth advocate and artist who has used her passion for art as a platform to uplift community and is most known for designing the 2022-2023 Sydney Swans Marngrook Guernsey “Duguwaybul Yindyamangidyal” which means “altogether respectfully”. Passionate about Indigenous education, Lua is a board member of Murray Toola-Damana Preschool in Mt Druitt, sits on the Moriah College RAP committee and has supported Redfern Jarjum College for eight years. Lua is currently the Artist in Residence at the Catholic Schools Guide and St Andrew’s College whilst in her final year of Fine Arts/Arts majoring in Indigenous Studies at UNSW. Lua works at the Office of the Children’s Guardian as a Policy and Child Safe Officer.

Early Entry Explained

Early Entry University applications do not open for Year 12 2024 until next year. How you apply to early entry will be explained to you in Term 1 Year 12.

Early entry programs provide another option for getting an offer to university. Many of the programs will give you an offer in August, September, or October 2024,  before your final Year 12 exams start. They do this by looking at your Year 11 grades. In most cases, the university will look at your Year 11 Semester 2 report grades to assess you.

Not all universities have early entry options and most of our students apply for university courses based on their final ATAR/IB results at the end of Year 12 as well as early entry.

ROAR Breakfast

Last Friday morning, our Yr 12 girls were treated to an insightful and relatable experience during the ROAR Breakfast, hosted by Kate Wightwick from the Class of 2022. The event provided an informal yet substantial platform for sharing and reflection on topics that matter most to them: Relationships, Opportunity, Advocacy, and Respect – collectively known as ROAR.

Last term’s Yr 12 girls feedback session laid the groundwork for this event, highlighting the demand for relatable experiences in an adult-like atmosphere.  The panelists, Angelique Wan and Lua Pellegrini, brought their unique stories to the table, underscoring the potential and impact that young individuals can have. Angelique’s journey from co-founding Consent Labs as a teenager to being recognised as an influential figure in consent education demonstrated the power of youth-driven initiatives. Lua Pellegrini’s accomplishments as an Indigenous youth advocate and artist showcased the significance of artistic expression in community upliftment.

The takeaways from their experiences were clear – resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a difference are key. The ROAR Breakfast Panel wasn’t just a presentation; it was a reminder that every voice, no matter the age, can effect change. Looking back on the event, the value of these conversations is evident. The stories shared by the panelists will undoubtedly resonate with our Yr 12 girls as they navigate their academic and personal journeys beyond Yr 12. The event was more than just a gathering; it was an opportunity to empower our youth, reminding them that they can make a meaningful impact.

To everyone involved – the staff, guests, and panelists – your dedication to nurturing young minds is commendable. As we move forward, let’s carry the spirit of ROAR with us – fostering Relationships, embracing Opportunities, advocating for important causes, and showing Respect. These principles will guide us as we face the road ahead, armed with inspiration and purpose. Thank you to Ms Gemma Van de Peer,  Ms Sarah Matthews and Ms Susan Jones for their efforts with coordinating the ROAR breakfast.

Celebrating Our Yr 12 Snowsport Athletes

Congratulations to Sienna Wessels, Julia Murphy, Nicholas Fitzhenry, Luke Gautheron, and Momo Elsworth for their outstanding performance at the recent NSW Interschools Championships held at Perisher.

The dedication and hard work of our athletes have undoubtedly left a mark on the competition. A particular highlight includes Sienna Wessels, Julia Murphy, and Nicholas Fitzhenry securing 3rd place as teams in the Moguls events. Their teamwork, commitment, and talent have undoubtedly set a shining example for their peers.

Sienna Wessels has showcased her exceptional skills even further, achieving a commendable 4th place in Snowboard GS and an impressive 5th place in Snowboard Cross. Her determination and versatility across different events stand as a testament to her well-rounded abilities.

Our Div 1 Female Snowboard GS and Cross teams have demonstrated their prowess, achieving a respectable 4th place. Similarly, the Div 1 Female Alpine team’s 5th place and Ski Cross’s 6th place showcase their tenacity in the face of tough competition. On the male side, the Div 1 Male Snowboard GS secured a commendable 6th place, and the Snowboard Cross team achieved a solid 7th place, while the Div 1 Male Alpine team secured a respectable 6th place.

The recognition received by Sienna Wessels, Nicholas Fitzhenry, Julia Murphy, Momo Elsworth, and Luke Gautheron in the form of Nationals Invitations is a true reflection of their talents. This acknowledgment not only celebrates their personal achievements but also speaks to the dedication of their coaches and the strength of our school’s Winter Sports program.

Unfortunately, the anticipation for the Nationals Event in Mt Buller has been met with disappointment due to unfavorable snow conditions. This news marks the conclusion of an era for our Yr 12 athletes, as this event would have been their final race. However, we remain hopeful that their passion for Winter Sports will carry them forward as they look towards the Winter Uni Games next year.

Well done to Sienna, Julia, Momo, Nicholas and Luke!

Yr 12 English Study Skills Workshop

On Monday, Dr. Meta Regis led Yr 12 in an optional English Workshop. During the workshop, students examined various types of questions, acquired skills to deconstruct essay prompts, and created plans to effectively structure their compositions. Techniques like identifying key terms and discovering synonyms for them proved beneficial in transforming the overall question phrasing into a variety of precise assessments. The utilization of a well-defined plan meant that students were able to confidently adjust their theses regarding the literary works to suit the requirements of diverse questions. This approach also enabled them to logically present their ideas and interpretations.

Transition to Alumni

On Wednesday, Yr 12 met with Ms. Kim Flatman, our Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator, and Yasmin Gupta from the Class of 2020, as part of a presentation called ‘Transition to Alumni’. As we approach the culmination of another academic year, it is with a mix of emotions that we witness our Yr 12 students transitioning into the esteemed role of Redlands alumni. The Yr 12 Transition to Alumni presentation has shed light on the exciting journey that awaits them and the lasting connection they share with Redlands. The transformation from students to alumni means entering a dynamic network of over 10,000 individuals who have once been part of the Redlands community. This network is more than just a number; it’s a source of support, opportunities, and lifelong friendships that extend far beyond the school gates.

The presentation stressed the significance of professional networking and mentoring within this community; with a key focus on using LinkedIn as a tool for networking. Learning from the experiences of those who have successfully traversed the path Yr 12 is embarking upon can provide insights and guidance that will serve them well in their future endeavors. Being alumni also carries a responsibility to give back to the community that nurtured them. The chance to volunteer as mentors or speakers at student and alumni events is a wonderful way for your children to share their experiences, inspire others, and contribute positively to the growth of the next generation. The Redlands alumni network extends its reach globally. Participating in regional chapter events, both near and far, provides an avenue for your children to build connections and expand their horizons beyond their immediate surroundings.

As parents and guardians, your support has been invaluable throughout your children’s educational journey. Even as Yr 12 transitions to alumni, your role in their lives remains essential.

Service Learning

Engaging in Service Learning through organisations like Kids Giving Back offers students a unique opportunity to make a difference while gaining valuable skills. This Term, students have participated in different learning initiatives focused on issues like homelessness, where they could apply gained knowledge to real-world problems, fostering empathy and practical understanding. Throughout our day working with Kids Giving Back, students were able to collaborate with peers, enhancing teamwork and communication skills. As they contribute to addressing homelessness, they develop a sense of social responsibility and self-efficacy.

“On Tuesday Year 10 participated in a service day excursion in which we educated ourselves and partook in activities to do with the issue of homelessness in Sydney. We started the day with some reflective questions starting with empathy – How do you think it would feel to not have a stable place to live? Can you imagine what daily life might be like for someone who is homeless? What basic needs do you think everyone deserves to have access to? This in turn led to the following discussions:

  • Challenging our perceptions – exploring biases, assumptions and stereotypes
  • Learning about root causes – factors in society; economic inequality and lack of affordable housing
  • Personal responsibility and compassion – understanding different perspectives.
  • Creating change – how do we make a positive impact on the issue of homelessness.
  • Community and support – how can communities help individuals experiencing homelessness?
  • Long term solutions including the role of government and policy.

Following these discussions we headed into Paddington to visit Kids Giving Back, Cook4Good, where we prepared food for the homeless. This experience was not only rewarding, but fun as well, and it was great to know we were doing something for our community. In the end, we made 160 meals in total, including hot meals, fruit skewers and rice paper rolls. After a break for lunch, we headed off on an urban walk, where we explored parts of Paddington and Darlinghurst, led by our guide. He had a lot of valuable insight on the city as he was once one of the homeless people living there. Overall, this day was an eye-opening experience, and I am very thankful that we are in a privileged enough position to be able to help these people who are experiencing the prominent problem of homelessness in Sydney”.

Reflection from Megan Kirkpatrick.

If students are keen to continue volunteering for Kids Giving Back, there is a great opportunity to do so with this organisation.

Term 3 Assessment Tasks Are In Full Swing

Congratulations to Yr 9 who are in the midst of a very heavy assessment period, juggling multiple tasks with aplomb! To give you an idea of their workload, here is an image of the Yr 9 Assessment Schedule from Week 6-10:

Student led assembly

This week in the Yr 7-9 Student Led Assembly, the student leaders inspired all students to get up and join in a giant ‘Just Dance’ dance-off. It was wonderful to see so many Yr 9 students bravely and enthusiastically leading the charge and interpreting the dance so passionately!

Yr 8 Geography Excursion

Today the HSIE department organised an excursion to Manly Dam and Bantry Bay as part of their current ‘Water and the World’ unit.

The focus of the excursion was to equip students with knowledge of local water management practices and some geography field work skills which included; testing water quality, collecting samples and field sketches.

We were blessed with perfect weather conditions and had a wonderful time exploring the reservoir.

House Debating

During Tutor on Wednesday, Year 8 representatives of the McDoull and Cowper house debated the topic ‘That tourism to Antarctica should be banned.’

In very similar fashion to the previous weeks Year 8 debate, the topic was hard fought and a tight decision.

This week the representatives of McDoull were victorious, now pitting them against Dumolo in the upcoming finals.

Yr 8 Analytical Writing Bootcamp

During our joint 7 – 9 Student -Led Assembly this week, Mrs. Rolon (Dean of Studies 7 -10) presented a number of students with certificates for their participation in the Analytical Writing Boot Camp. These students have spent their Monday afternoons over the past term developing their skills in annotating.texts and producing highly structured pieces of writing from these annotations.

Well done to Daniel Bond, Loukas Veryinis, William Arnold, Andy Guan, Liam Donnelly, Georgia Cavric, Jessica Jackson, Saskia Kaye and Roman Jackson for their participation in this extra-curricular and for recognising the opportunity workshops like this provide.

Year 7

Rocking out in Assembly

It has been another busy week in Yr 7 with students working hard to keep pace with assessments and to plan ahead for the End of Year Examinations (starting in Week 3 of Term 4). So, what better way to start the week than with some rocking tunes played by one of our Yr 7 musicians, Andy Budden.

During our Year Assembly on Monday, Andy presented a solo performance of a musical piece he has been working on, Reggae Island. It was a confident and skilful performance, showcasing his passion for guitar and his joy in playing for others. Students offered him a well-deserved rapturous applause!

We were also able to publicly acknowledged the efforts of some of our students who have been involved in Oxford University Computing Challenge and Australian Maths Trust CAT competitions this year. It is great to see students extending themselves and testing their academic capacities by engaging in such external competitions. Well done!

We even had a bit of time at the end of Assembly to return to a small peer connection exercise we carried out at earlier in the year – asking questions to develop closeness. Students chatted to someone they do not always engage with, asking them questions like:

  • Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
  • What would constitute a perfect day for you?
  • When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

It was nice to see students socialising and connecting with people outside of their regular circle.

Yr 12 Buddies visit McDouall

Last Friday, our Year 12 buddies gathered again to support Yr 7, this time sharing their knowledge and experiences of service and examination feedback with McDouall.

The Yr 12s engaged the group with a fun Kahoot, exploring how to seek guidance and support in preparing for examinations, and how best to use assessment feedback to develop their confidence and skills in the future. As with our previous sessions, our buddies then divided Yr 7 into small groups to hear how Yr 7 were managing things and to offer their own advice and support. It was another valuable experience, offering a great connection between our Senior Students and Yr 7s, allowing them to learn from the valuable experience of their older Redlands peers.

The session also provided a timely reminder to Yr 7 that their End of Year Examinations are coming up in Week 3 of Term 4 and that they should be starting to prepare for these.

Student Leaders’ Assembly: Dancing into Good Behaviour

This week our student leaders conducted a more light-hearted, fun assembly, given Yr 7 a chance to have a bit of a laugh. After some amusing moments where the Arts Captains imitated the Sport Captains and the School Captains imitated the Service Captains, Yrs 7-9 were challenged to get involved in a moment of impromptu ‘Just Dance’. Bouncing about the Keisha’s Timber was a great way to unleash some energy prior to Period 3!

However, such fun was also tempered with some important messages to the group about behavioural expectations. It was clarified by our Dean of Students, Ms Jansons, that students actions in the Undercroft need to be more considered and safe. In particularly, Ms Jansons emphasised the importance of:

  • maintaining Redlands’ hands off policy. No one should be physically pushing or touching others.
  • using appropriate language, especially in active times like recess and lunch.
  • not running in this enclosed space.

I have also delivered my own similar messages to Yr 7, also emphasising the importance of keeping our spaces clean and tidy, and picking up our rubbish. The Undercroft is a great place for our Yr 7s to relax, eat food and socialise, and so it is important we all make sure to behave responsibly in that space.

House Debating – Cowper versus McDouall

Today Yr 7 continued the House Debating competition with another close battle, this time between Cowper and McDouall. The topic was “that passengers on flights within Australia should be allowed to take their pet with them in the cabin, if transported in an approved carrier.” Cowper were the Affirmative and McDouall the Negative.

The debaters were all supported by their peers in the Edwards Auditorium, and it was wonderful to see how engaged they were in the interesting arguments presented. At the end of the day, it was animal welfare that won the day! McDouall were successfully able to negate the proposition, suggesting that while there might be benefits to the owners, the welfare of the animals needed to be given priority here, and onboard with a mix of humans and animals, in cabin space not fit for their needs was not the ethically correct thing to do.

Well done team McDouall!

Now, we can look forward to an epic showdown of McDouall versus Roseby in the final next week.

Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m Olivia Law:

After her fantastic success in our school athletics carnival earlier this year (breaking a range of records!), Liv has continued to work hard on her running, recently competing in the Australian Cross-Country Championships at Stromlo Forest in the ACT. Liv ran in the U14 Girls 3k, coming 7th out of 83 competitors, and running a swift time of 10:36s. That’s 3.32s per km – amazing! This is a big achievement for Liv and one of her strongest results at nationals. Well done!

Redlands Athletics Team

In the pre-Spring sunshine and warmth, I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to watch some of our students compete at Tuesday’s Heads of Independent Coeducational Schools (HICES) Athletics Carnival with schools competing from as far afield as Bathurst, Orange, the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast. As always, our students competed with great pride and commitment and we were delighted to be placed 3rd overall, with many individual and relay personal bests and ribbons along the way. Congratulations to every team member and our Sports staff on supporting this opportunity for the students.

Human Library Special Guest

This week, I joined Year 6 Chapel where Ms McKenzie and the students welcomed Reverend Tim St Quintin as their special guest as part of their Human Library series, which first began during lockdown! Tim is the Rector of St Peter’s Anglican Church, Cremorne, which has a direct connection with our School and also serves as a Board Director here at Redlands. I know Tim really enjoyed having an opportunity to have this meaningful engagement with the students who asked some thoughtful questions about Tim’s past experiences as both an Army Officer for fifteen years prior to entering full-time ministry.

Father’s Day Breakfast

We are looking forward to welcoming dads to our campus next Monday morning between 7.45am – 8.30am for ‘Coffee in the Piazza’ and we wish all dads a special day this Sunday.

Year 3 Camp (7-8 September)

Next week sees our final Junior School year group enjoying their outdoor education experience as Year 3 head off on their first overnight camp.

As a precursor, next Wednesday 6 September, the Outdoor Education Group will come to Redlands and run activities and team building games for the students and staff and also talk to them about their two-day off-site adventure on Thursday and Friday.

Last week, Mr Latimer sent Yr 3 families a detailed overview of the camp schedule via Pulse and a reminder that there are also extensive details on the Redlands page of the OEG website and which can be accessed as below:

Grandparents Day

Last Friday we welcomed excited and proud grandparents and special friends to the Prep School to enjoy some classroom sharing time and a well-deserved morning tea and playground chat. After being escorted to classrooms by our Year 2 students, our visitors participated in fun activities, art creations, singing and they even got to show off their disco moves in the Year 2 rooms! The morning ended with a lovely morning tea and a play outside in the sunshine.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day highlights the importance of cross generational sharing and learnings. The engagement and conversation that occurred in classrooms last Friday was so very special for both our young learners and for our community.

After School Prep Sport Feedback

Term 4 After School Sport registration will open at 8.30am, September 4 and close on Friday September 8 at 5pm. Term 4 sport choices will continue to be gymnastics, football, AFL and Multisport.

We continue to listen to and respond to parent feedback as community voice is important to us. We encourage families who have accessed the afternoon sport program  to please fill in this quick survey to help us plan for the continued growth and development of the program.

Parent Volunteers for Camp Week

The excitement is growing as we begin the countdown for Camp Week. Prep Camp Week will be held in Week 9 (11-15th September). The students will be participating in a range of fun and creative activities throughout the week. On Monday the 11th of September, we have organised some teamwork games for the students on the oval. We require some parent volunteers to help run the activities. If you can assist between 11am and 1pm on the 11th of September, can you please email Prep Reception. We appreciate your support.

Growth Coaching

A Message from Mr Ben Castelli, Head of Learning Analytics (P-12)

Throughout this term, our students have been meeting their teachers as part of our P-12 Growth Coaching Program. Using iGrow, an interactive application developed by Redlands, students have been able to see where their light shines and discuss opportunities for collaboration and holistic growth. It has provided a unique opportunity for students to meet individually with their teachers and reflect on their learning. By connecting, reflecting, and affecting visible growth, we empower each other to thrive and evolve as a community of learners. Our students’ emphasis on learning from each other, questioning and embracing new experiences reflects their curiosity and active engagement in learning.

Head Lice and Sickness

Our Kindergarten classes were notified of head lice being present in the cohort this week. Can I please ask all prep parents to check their children’s hair for lice or lice eggs and treat accordingly at home. Just to be aware that a child will be sent home if lice is detected at school. Please be mindful that if you send your child to school with lice, this can easily spread and lead to student and staff absences. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Tummy bugs and heavy colds with coughs are quite prevalent in Prep at the moment. Can I please encourage parents to keep your child at home if they are unwell and to complete the absentee form on Pulse if they are absent.

Secondary Sport

As we begin our transition into summer sport I thought it would be a timely reminder about coaching mental preparation techniques for competition, essentially to optimise the students performance and ensure they can excel under pressure. This psychological aspect of training complements physical skills and can make the difference between a win and a loss.

We train our coaches to employ a range of strategies to enhance athletes’ readiness.

  • Visualisation – is a technique where athletes mentally rehearse their performance, imagining every detail of the competition, helping build familiarity and confidence.
  • Goal-setting – involves setting specific, measurable objectives, fostering motivation and direction.
  • Routines – developing routines helps athletes establish a sense of control and consistency. Pre-Game rituals can create a calming effect, allowing athletes to enter a focused state of mind. breath control and relaxation techniques are also crucial to manage stress and anxiety.
  • Self-Talk – positive self-talk combats self-doubt and instills confidence. coaches encourage athletes to replace negative thoughts with affirmations and constructive statements. Handling pressure involved teaching students to embrace it as a challenge rather than a threat.
  • Building Resilience – helps athletes understand that setbacks are part of the journey and offer tools to rebound stronger. mindfulness and meditation techniques enhance present moment awareness, improving concentration during high-stress situations.

Ultimately in order to lead students to peak performance during competitions it is important to tailor strategies into athletes’ individual needs, fostering mental toughness and creating that winning mindset.

‘Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength’

HICES Athletics Carnival

HICES Athletics

On Wednesday we had 57 athletes representing Redlands travel out to Homebush to participate in the HICES Selection carnival for possible inclusion in the HICES team that would progress through to CIS. A mix of boys and girls from Under 9’s to Under 12’s who had qualified for the team based on their performance at our school carnivals competed with enthusiasm and maturity. In beautiful conditions it was perfect for those running on track but also participating in the field events. Our relay teams performed exceptionally after only a few weeks of changes. A short video of the Junior Boys Girls and Senior Boys and Girls 4x100m relay can be viewed here.

And in exciting news we set 2 new records at HICES, the first being Junior Boys 1500m where Aurelio Nicholas broke the HICES record with a run of 5:46.17. Our Senior boys relay team broke the HICES record with a run of 55.40, well done to these students.

We have 21 students qualify for the HICES team who will now compete at CIS later this term and those families have been notified this week.

Legally Blonde Auditions

Harvard’s beloved blonde takes the Redlands stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat story of self-discovery. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances – this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!

Auditions for Redlands 2024 Senior Musical: Legally Blonde  are in Week 8! It would be criminal to miss the opportunity to go to Harvard Law as Elle Woods, or teach a class as the villainous Professor Callahan, or just have the time of your life in the Greek Chorus of the Delta Nu Sorority!

Auditions for Orchestra will be held in Week 9 for our superstar musicians.

There’s still time to sign up! Complete the google form found in the audition pack to secure your slot.

All Audition Information can be Found Here

We can’t wait to see all the talent Redlands has to share. What? Like it’s hard?

Yr 12 IB Theatre Solo Performance Evenings

Our Yr 12 IB Performance, Theatre Solo Performances is taking place on Thursday 31 of August and 1 September at 6:30pm in the Drama Studio. This term, students have researched theatre theorist, Anne Bogart, and identified an aspect of her theatre practice to use in their Solo Performances. Students were required to reflect on their learning and how it had been impacted, by performing theatre which was based on the exploration of a theorist’s concepts, all audience are most welcome.

Yr 11 HSC Drama Performance Evening

Our Year 11 HSC Drama Showcase Performance evening is taking place on Friday the 8 of September at 6:30pm in the Drama Studio. The students will be performing a range of performances from units they have studied this year, dramatic forms and styles, we warmly invite you to attend.

Yr 10 Drama Excursion – Constellations

Last week we took Year 10 Drama students to see Sydney Theatre Company’s production of ‘Constellations’ – Nick Payne’s gloriously romantic West End hit and winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best Play Revival. As heartrending as it is splendid, Constellations told the story of beekeeper Roland, and quantum physicist Marianne: two (literally) star-crossed lovers whose relationship we saw in a series of different ‘what if?’ variations – their joy and heartbreak, their laughter and quarrels, their break-ups and make-ups. The result for our Year 10 Drama students who were studying realism acting techniques this term was a rich, compelling, and sensitive love story that reflected on the power of human connection in a seemingly random universe. Students were able to recognise the ability that Stanislavski’s ‘given circumstances’ can bring to an actor’s performance on stage, allowing them to present a character with authentic emotion.

“The actors’ choices were represented through lighting and stage positioning. The constant resetting of scenes was astonishing to watch – just seeing how the smallest detail can lead to a completely different outcome in a scene. Furthermore, this technique allowed me to understand the characters and see how their love story unfolded multiple times, eventually seeing the climax of their relationship at the end of the performance. This excursion allowed me to see professional actors at a high level and exhibit many techniques that I can incorporate into my acting to develop it further”. (Jaiden Murphy – Year 10 Drama Student)

Drama and Theatre: Student of the Week – Bodhi Sepulohniam

Bodhi is an outstanding member of Kindergarten Preparatory Acting. He has been nominated for Redlands Drama and Theatre student of the week because of his commitment and attitude. He demonstrates fantastic teamwork and always tries his best. He already knows his lines for our end of year showcase and brings wonderful energy to each rehearsal. He is very excited to perform to an audience next term. Well done, Bodhi! (Amber Virtue – Drama Tutor)

ASBOF – Winners!

Exciting news – our Intermediate Concert Band attained the GOLD Award at the Australian Strings, Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF) today at Sydney Conservatorium of Music!

In a highly competitive event with 6 other schools in the Raymond Hanson division, our Intermediate Concert Band was the only band in the division to attain the Gold Award – an unbelievable achievement.

Our students also listened to the other bands in the division and took away so much from this experience. They will get audio feedback from the adjudicators which Mr Montz will walk through with the group in their next Concert Band session.

A massive congratulations goes out to our Head of Bands (P-12) and Conductor of Intermediate Concert Band, Mr Joseph Montz and Mr Jason Xu for his support as Assistant Head of Bands. We would also like to thank each of the Concert Band tutors for their work in supporting and mentoring our students in the Senior Concert Band program this year.

Music Awards Dinner

We had an absolutely outstanding night of music making and celebration at the Music Awards Dinner on Friday Evening. Awards and Presentations for students in Yrs 7-12 were given, and our Year 12s received a wonderful departing gift, including professional headshots from our professional photographer Vicki Skarrat. It was delightful to see such a lovely atmosphere in the room, with parents, and special friends enjoying a communal celebration of all we do in the Music Performance space.

Redlands Album 2023

We also launched the Redlands Album 2023 at the Music Awards Dinner! Now available on Spotify and Apple Music, the Redlands Album 2023 features the music of the winners of our Redlands Composition Competition in 2022. A variety of tracks can be heard from our talented students, from contemporary pop to orchestral classical music.
