Year 12
ROAR Breakfast
Last Friday morning, our Yr 12 girls were treated to an insightful and relatable experience during the ROAR Breakfast, hosted by Kate Wightwick from the Class of 2022. The event provided an informal yet substantial platform for sharing and reflection on topics that matter most to them: Relationships, Opportunity, Advocacy, and Respect – collectively known as ROAR.
Last term’s Yr 12 girls feedback session laid the groundwork for this event, highlighting the demand for relatable experiences in an adult-like atmosphere. The panelists, Angelique Wan and Lua Pellegrini, brought their unique stories to the table, underscoring the potential and impact that young individuals can have. Angelique’s journey from co-founding Consent Labs as a teenager to being recognised as an influential figure in consent education demonstrated the power of youth-driven initiatives. Lua Pellegrini’s accomplishments as an Indigenous youth advocate and artist showcased the significance of artistic expression in community upliftment.
The takeaways from their experiences were clear – resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a difference are key. The ROAR Breakfast Panel wasn’t just a presentation; it was a reminder that every voice, no matter the age, can effect change. Looking back on the event, the value of these conversations is evident. The stories shared by the panelists will undoubtedly resonate with our Yr 12 girls as they navigate their academic and personal journeys beyond Yr 12. The event was more than just a gathering; it was an opportunity to empower our youth, reminding them that they can make a meaningful impact.
To everyone involved – the staff, guests, and panelists – your dedication to nurturing young minds is commendable. As we move forward, let’s carry the spirit of ROAR with us – fostering Relationships, embracing Opportunities, advocating for important causes, and showing Respect. These principles will guide us as we face the road ahead, armed with inspiration and purpose. Thank you to Ms Gemma Van de Peer, Ms Sarah Matthews and Ms Susan Jones for their efforts with coordinating the ROAR breakfast.
Celebrating Our Yr 12 Snowsport Athletes
Congratulations to Sienna Wessels, Julia Murphy, Nicholas Fitzhenry, Luke Gautheron, and Momo Elsworth for their outstanding performance at the recent NSW Interschools Championships held at Perisher.
The dedication and hard work of our athletes have undoubtedly left a mark on the competition. A particular highlight includes Sienna Wessels, Julia Murphy, and Nicholas Fitzhenry securing 3rd place as teams in the Moguls events. Their teamwork, commitment, and talent have undoubtedly set a shining example for their peers.
Sienna Wessels has showcased her exceptional skills even further, achieving a commendable 4th place in Snowboard GS and an impressive 5th place in Snowboard Cross. Her determination and versatility across different events stand as a testament to her well-rounded abilities.
Our Div 1 Female Snowboard GS and Cross teams have demonstrated their prowess, achieving a respectable 4th place. Similarly, the Div 1 Female Alpine team’s 5th place and Ski Cross’s 6th place showcase their tenacity in the face of tough competition. On the male side, the Div 1 Male Snowboard GS secured a commendable 6th place, and the Snowboard Cross team achieved a solid 7th place, while the Div 1 Male Alpine team secured a respectable 6th place.
The recognition received by Sienna Wessels, Nicholas Fitzhenry, Julia Murphy, Momo Elsworth, and Luke Gautheron in the form of Nationals Invitations is a true reflection of their talents. This acknowledgment not only celebrates their personal achievements but also speaks to the dedication of their coaches and the strength of our school’s Winter Sports program.
Unfortunately, the anticipation for the Nationals Event in Mt Buller has been met with disappointment due to unfavorable snow conditions. This news marks the conclusion of an era for our Yr 12 athletes, as this event would have been their final race. However, we remain hopeful that their passion for Winter Sports will carry them forward as they look towards the Winter Uni Games next year.
Well done to Sienna, Julia, Momo, Nicholas and Luke!
Yr 12 English Study Skills Workshop
On Monday, Dr. Meta Regis led Yr 12 in an optional English Workshop. During the workshop, students examined various types of questions, acquired skills to deconstruct essay prompts, and created plans to effectively structure their compositions. Techniques like identifying key terms and discovering synonyms for them proved beneficial in transforming the overall question phrasing into a variety of precise assessments. The utilization of a well-defined plan meant that students were able to confidently adjust their theses regarding the literary works to suit the requirements of diverse questions. This approach also enabled them to logically present their ideas and interpretations.
Transition to Alumni
On Wednesday, Yr 12 met with Ms. Kim Flatman, our Alumni and Community Engagement Coordinator, and Yasmin Gupta from the Class of 2020, as part of a presentation called ‘Transition to Alumni’. As we approach the culmination of another academic year, it is with a mix of emotions that we witness our Yr 12 students transitioning into the esteemed role of Redlands alumni. The Yr 12 Transition to Alumni presentation has shed light on the exciting journey that awaits them and the lasting connection they share with Redlands. The transformation from students to alumni means entering a dynamic network of over 10,000 individuals who have once been part of the Redlands community. This network is more than just a number; it’s a source of support, opportunities, and lifelong friendships that extend far beyond the school gates.
The presentation stressed the significance of professional networking and mentoring within this community; with a key focus on using LinkedIn as a tool for networking. Learning from the experiences of those who have successfully traversed the path Yr 12 is embarking upon can provide insights and guidance that will serve them well in their future endeavors. Being alumni also carries a responsibility to give back to the community that nurtured them. The chance to volunteer as mentors or speakers at student and alumni events is a wonderful way for your children to share their experiences, inspire others, and contribute positively to the growth of the next generation. The Redlands alumni network extends its reach globally. Participating in regional chapter events, both near and far, provides an avenue for your children to build connections and expand their horizons beyond their immediate surroundings.
As parents and guardians, your support has been invaluable throughout your children’s educational journey. Even as Yr 12 transitions to alumni, your role in their lives remains essential.
