Study Centre

This term, we are trialling a new Study Centre structure based on student and staff feedback. Yr 11 check in with staff on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub and then may decide whether they want to work on their own, in small groups or with a staff member. Several students have already participated this week. The Study Centre schedule is posted for students in the iLearn Yr 11 Pastoral Page and will be posted for parents in Pulse.

Inter-House Debating 2023

This week kicks off the House Debating Competition. Each house will have a chance to compete against another house with the winners competing in the finals. Each year, this cohort has had the opportunity to participate in debating. However, this year, our Yr 11 students are coaches for Yrs 7-10. Coaches are assisting younger years with formulating strong arguments, learning the structure of debating and adhering to times and rules throughout the debate.

Thank you to the following students who have volunteered to be a coach for their house. We wish you all the best of luck over these next few weeks of competition.

Cowper Coaches: Jocelyn Wang, Josie Bannon, Apoorv Pilani, Isaac Brooks, Xander Mullin, Charli Waterland and Anderson Boris.

Dumolo Coaches: Ethan Beggs, Henry Moate, Annie Zhang, Hamish Campbell, Sophia Rolon, Hugo Little, Anneka Steele and Thomas Wright.

McDouall Coaches: Jack Keogh, Chris Szeto, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Kabir Yohannan, Rafferty Heard, Antonia Morgan and Alissandra Braden.

Roseby Coaches: Ahnu Guan, Mischa Barac, Scarlett Thorp, Will Algar, Daisy Thomas, Jack Petering, Krishan Price and Flynn Kieran.

Gala Arts Wrap Up

Congratulations to all students who participated and competed in Gala Arts last Friday night. It was an impressive show including photography, singing, instrumentals and acting. The staging, the lighting, the performances and the energy were beautiful throughout the evening, a truly professional production. Yr 11 students involved included: Jasmine Black, Olivia Everingham, Harry Fenton, Tara Gold, Scarlett Ilic, Alfie Leach, Jocelyn Wang, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Aaron Beder, Halcyon Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Congratulations to Hallie Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black for receiving the Best Theatre piece for their incredible performance of The Play That Went Wrong.

Congratulations to Scarlett Ilic for receiving Best Vocal with her own composition Still in Love with You.

Mock Trial

Last night the Mock Trial Team competed against Marsden High in our first Knock-Out Round. Our witnesses, Sophia Rolon and Annie Zhang, gave credible evidence as a lawyer and Constable about a fight that occurred between two basketball players. Barrister 1, Josie Bannon, made a strong opening argument about the difference between competitiveness versus assault in sports and Barrister 2, Marcus Cooper-Hor, was able to unnerve the other team through his skilled cross examination of the Defence witnesses. Anneka Steele, our Solicitor, and Jack Keogh, our Magistrates Clerk, supported the team through weeks of research and preparation, leading to a well-deserved win and progression to the next round.

Da Vinci Decathlon

On Wednesday 26th July, a group of 8 Year 11 students represented Redlands in the Da Vinci Decathlon state competition, joining 150 teams from across NSW.

Da Vinci Decathlon, an interschool competition held at Knox Grammar School, is named after Leonardo da Vinci, as the tasks that students undertake mirror his diverse skills and interests. Students participated in competitions across ten disciplines related to the theme of Unity, including Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering, Ideation, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Cartography, and Legacy.

A heartfelt round of applause goes out to the students who demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and exceptional teamwork skills, alongside their impressive display of critical and creative thinking throughout the entire process.

Of particular note was their result in the Cartography section, where they placed 1st in the state. Well done Yr 11 team! Students on the Yr 11 Team include Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Jack Keogh, Anderson Boris, Conor Petersen, Heidi Colleran, Annie Zhang, Ahnu Guan and Johnny Wang.

Push-Up Challenge for Mental Health Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the push for better health. Over the course of 23 days, 80 students and staff members managed to complete 116,067 push-ups in total! As we split into multiple teams, an outstanding amount of $8,646 was raised to support the Lifeline foundation, which was over $3000 more than our original goal.

We would like to thank the supporters who helped our Push-up Community successfully raise that amount, the teachers who created multiple opportunities for spreading word of the challenge, and finally the 80 amazing people who pushed for the better of mental and physical health. We could not be more grateful.

Jaiden Confessore, Daisy Thomas, Grace Durrant, Johnny Wang and Jack Petering
