Redlands House and Transition Gold

School Readiness

As we enter Semester 2, many families are starting to think about the following year, and considering if their child is “school ready”. This is a hot topic in the media, in playgrounds all over Australia: Should you hold your child back a year and allow them to enter school at an older age than their classmates?

A global trend in education has seen parents lean towards holding their children back, with research showing little academic benefit in starting early and considerable benefits in starting late. Psychologist Dr Amanda Mergler published an article in the Australasian Journal of Early Childhood. She found the proportion of parents holding children back until they turned six almost doubled in the last five years. It has been reported that in New South Wales, the proportion of parents holding back could be as high as 22 percent.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when making this important decision: How close a child is to the cut-off age, maturity of the child, social and emotional maturity, impacts in the later years, financial pressures and the parent’s own school experience. Your class teacher is a good reference point. They see how your child works in a group learning space, as opposed to being taught individually. Group work demands skills such as concentration and on task behaviour focus.

Some would say you’re not actually holding them back, you’re actually giving them a head start, as when they begin school, they will be older, more mature and more ready than they would have been.

Juniors to Seniors

To clarify the process for new families who have children moving from Juniors to Seniors in the coming year. Children stay in their class, with the same group of children for the Senior year. In the Senior year they will attend 3 days a week as follows:

  • Orange Class Seniors  – Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday
  • Yellow Class Seniors  –  Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday
  • Blue Class Seniors     –  Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday

Jeans 4 Genes

Just a reminder Redlands House will be taking part in Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 4 August. If your child attends preschool on this day, please join us in supporting this charity by wearing jeans and/or denim to preschool and bringing a gold coin to donate to the boxes on the sign in table. Jeans for Genes Day raises money to support the Children’s Medical Research Institute to discover treatments and cures for childhood illnesses.

Redlands Cup

Two of our Kindergarten students, Jemima Joyce and Saskia Williams along with Annabel Grinham and Jonathan Burton from Yr 1, participated in the Redlands Cup on Sunday 9 July in Thredbo.
Our prep students competed with courage and resilience and most of all they had fun participating in their events.

Annabel, Jemima and Saskia came second in the Division 6 Alpine GS Girls team event.
Jemima, Saskia and Jonathan also participated in the Sydney  Interschools Race week in Division 6 on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 July in Thredbo.
Jemima came 22nd and Saskia came 24th in the Division 6 Girls Alpine GS Ski event out of 26 Kindergarten to Yr 2 girls.
Jonathan came 31st in the Division 6 Boys Alpine GS event out of 37 Kindergarten to Yr 2 Boys.

Saskia also participated in the Division 6 Girls Ski Cross event. She came 14th out of 21 Kindergarten to Yr 2 girls. This result means Saskia will be competing at the State Championships for Ski Cross, Division 6 in August.

Congratulations to all those who skied over the three-day period. We are super proud of you all.

Jeans for Genes Day, Friday 4 August

1in 20 children faces a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and life-threatening metabolic disorders. That’s 12 kids born every minute worldwide. Money raised from Jeans for Genes Day events help scientists find treatments and cures for these children.

The families of these children are used to hearing words like “incurable” or “lifelong effects”. It doesn’t have to be this way. Right now, the Children’s Medical Research Institute are working on gene therapy to find cures for previously incurable genetic diseases. Kids just want to be kids, but instead of playing sports with their friends or catching butterflies on a sunny day, these kids are getting liver transplants, taking dozens of medications, or getting their next dose of chemotherapy.

Your support helps the scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) find cures, so these kids and millions more like them can go back to being kids. CMRI scientists ask the difficult questions in order to gain the important answers. This knowledge enables them to light the spark of discovery and to create a healthier future for all children.

On Friday August 4, Redlands House and Prep students and staff are encouraged to wear ‘a touch of denim’ to school to support Jeans for Genes Day. Our wonderful parent community will be baking cupcakes for sale on the day. Students can buy a cake for $2 to help raise money for the CMRI.

If your child has after school sport, please ensure they wear their sandshoes, students can change into their sports uniform if they wish after school.

Week 3 Learning Conversations

We look forward to welcoming our parents into classrooms next week for Learning Conversations. These sessions provide our families with an opportunity to discuss Semester One reports. Staff will also be sharing what the focus is for learning this term. If you would like to have a discussion with any specialist or other a Learning Plus staff member, please ask the class teacher to invite them to your meeting.

Lost Property

You may have noticed that our Lost Property cupboard has disappeared! The decision was made to remove it as it had become a dumping ground for anything and everything, we were even finding food scraps in it. Already the amount of clothing and lunch boxes has built up to levels that are unmanageable.

I am putting out a request to any parent who would like to volunteer one afternoon a week to help us sort and return the lost property items to classes or take unnamed items to charity bins. If you are interested and would like to lend a hand, please call, email, or chat to Karin Alfonso at Prep Reception. Thank you in advance for helping us.

Wellbeing Lunchtime Activities

Ms Fiebiger has once again pulled together a fun and supportive term of wellbeing activities for our students. The timetable is visible around the Prep School so I would encourage our families to have a discussion with your children about what they would like to attend. A big thank you to Ms Wales (Annabel’s mum, One Blue) who continues to come in and take the Crafty Kids Club. If there are any other parents who would like to take a lunchtime activity, please talk to myself or Ms Fiebiger.

Cocurricular Music for Kindergarten Students

In Semester 2 we invite Kindergarten students to enrol in cocurricular music ensembles. Kindergarten students are eligible to enrol in Prep Choir (no audition required) or Prep Strings (no audition required but prerequisite of at least 1 term of private lessons). For more information, please contact juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Wayside Chapel Junior Campus Winter Collection

Wayside Chapel is an iconic Sydney Community whose message of love over hate deeply resonates with our Redlands Values. The Junior Campus is partnering with Wayside this winter to provide much needed goods for those experiencing homelessness in Sydney. They urgently need new or old (in good condition) warm clothes, sleeping bags, socks, beanies. For a complete list of donation needs see the attached list. Your gifts immediately improve the lives of those who visit Wayside. Hand in donations to either Prep or Junior Receptions up until 24 August.

From the Principal

Like many of you, I spent last Friday evening thoroughly entertained, impressed and in awe of the performances of our Secondary School students at this year’s Gala Arts. (Gala Arts is a showcase of the creative and performing arts across the categories of photography, theatre, dance, vocal and instrumental in a House Competition format.) Congratulations, not just to the winners, but to all students and staff who were involved both on stage and off stage.

Yet what struck me even more than the vast array of talent on display were the underlying messages about our School’s culture that were also on display and were reinforced by conversations I had with some of the impressive alumni judges who were present.

At Redlands we pride ourselves in providing a vast smorgasbord of opportunities for students to “let their light shine” and “develop their own unique potential”. These opportunities are in the arts, sports and other cocurricular pursuits, as well as in their learning, leadership, service and social development, to name a few.

However, what I think sets Redlands apart from other schools that may have similar missions, is that we truly celebrate this “unique potential” of individual students and create a safe space for them to “have a go”, “put themselves out there” and extend themselves in ways they may never felt was possible.

Luke Haberecht (Arts Captain and Redlander 2014) shared with me that he took for granted these opportunities and this Redlands culture until he was in the industry and, when sharing his school experiences with fellow professional performers, they were envious of what Redlands provided him.

What was also on display on Friday evening was the tremendous support for those involved, whether that was from the fellow performers or from the audience – an audience which was made up of a large number of students supporting their peers.

Another alumni judge, Tess Haubrich (Arts Captain and Redlander 2007), remarked to the audience about how impressed she was by the palpable support she could sense amongst the performers and from the audience on the night. She also reflected to me that this level of support is quite special and is not always felt in the professional realm.

I would encourage those who were not able to attend Gala Arts this year, to book in their tickets early next year as it is a truly special night in many different ways.

Vale Martin Longhurst

At the end of last week we were informed that long serving former staff member, Martin Longhurst, passed away after his battle with cancer.

Martin played many roles in his thirty years of dedicated service at Redlands from 1981-2010, most notably Director of Sport. As Director of Sport, he initiated many important changes in the Sports program at Redlands, not the least of which was the transition to a fully coeducational sports program. Martin was also instrumental in the establishment of the ISA (Independent Sporting Association) in 1990 and was the ISA’s founding Director of Sport until 1998.

A number of staff, student representatives and I attended his funeral today and our most sincere condolences are with Martin’s family and those close to him during this time.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Our walk next week on Wed 2 Aug is from Little Manly to North Head. Meet at Little Manly beach at 8.40am. As we will be walking through a national park, please do not bring your dogs.

Any questions, please contact Carys on 0423 663 970.

Isaac finished 11th in the 17 years boys (6km) and Imogen finished 14th in the 15 years girls (4km). These are strong results for Isaac and Imogen, as there were around 100 runners in each race.

Australasian Economics Competition

Yr 12 student Taylor Riddell has been announced as one of the five national winners in the Australian Economics Olympiad 2023. She was invited to participate in the Australasian Economics Competition (AAEO) and during the winter holidays, she competed with National Economics Olympiad winners from other countries, representing Australia with four other participants from across Australia. I am very pleased to share with you that the Australian team won the final round of the competition and was awarded the gold medal!

With other overseas and interstate participants, she participated in a range of different activities, including a visit to the NSW Treasury and the Reserve Bank of Australia. On the final day, she presented a case study about Australia’s childcare policies, in front of a panel of judges including the UNSW Economics Professor Gigi Foster, Ashley Brosnan of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Ian Dehlsen of the NSW Treasury.

This unique experience allowed Taylor to showcase her skills on an international stage while fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

Mock Trial

Last night the Mock Trial Team competed against Marsden High in our first Knock-Out Round. Our witnesses Sophia Rolon and Annie Zhang gave credible evidence as a lawyer and Constable about a fight that occurred between two basketball players. Barrister 1 Josie Bannon made a strong opening argument about the difference between competitiveness versus assault in sports and Barrister 2 Marcus Cooper-Hor was able to unnerve the other team through his skilled cross examination of the Defence witnesses. Anneka Steele our Solicitor and Jack Keogh our Magistrates Clerk supported the team through weeks of research and preparation, leading to a well-deserved win and progression to the next round.

Yr 12 Shine At Gala Arts

The Class of 2023 showcased a remarkable depth of talent in various artistic disciplines, including artists, instrumentalists, dancers, actors, and vocalists, during the 2023 Gala Arts evening. Congratulations to all the Yr 12 students who delivered outstanding performances, as well as the dedicated production crew who worked diligently behind the scenes to bring this state-of-the-art production to life.

A resounding round of applause goes to Hadley Wintle, who earned the prestigious title of overall winner of Gala Arts for his highly conceptual instrumental piece, Billie. Hadley’s performance on the alto saxophone, accompanied by Zi-Hao Lee on piano, created a mesmerising fusion with the soulful voices of Billie Holiday. The audience was treated to an extraordinary, highly original, and innovative performance.

Additionally, special recognition goes to Flynn Northam for securing the top spot in the Gala Arts Photo Competition senior category. Furthermore, congratulations to the Cowper House for claiming victory in the Gala Arts House Shield competition. Lastly, a heartfelt appreciation to the Arts Captains, Maya Little and Sebastian Tang, for their sensational job as MCs for the evening and to all the House Captains and Captains of Activities for their efforts in presenting each of the Gala Arts Performances to the audience.

The Gala Arts event was a true celebration of the Class of 2023’s artistic talent, and all involved should be immensely proud of their contributions and achievements.

Below are a list of the students and their outstanding performance pieces:

Week 1 Year Assembly Growth Awards

HSC Growth Award

Congratulations to Mabel Hancock who was the recipient of last week’s Year Assembly HSC Growth Award.

Mabel’s Term 2 Effort Score was in the top 20 effort scores for Term 3 across Year 7 – 12. Mabel has increased her cocurricular involvement since the beginning of Yr 11 and she has also had numerous meetings with the Career Advisors, and her ‘Place in the World’ globe on the iGrow tree is full.

Well done Mabel!

IB Growth Award

Congratulations to Eve Phillips who was the recipient of last week’s Year Assembly IB Growth Award.

Eve’s effort score improved by 11.8% from Term 1 to Term 2. Eve has participated in a significant number of cocurricular activities including The Addams Family Musical and Gala Arts throughout her senior studies. Eve’s study habits improved significantly, particularly after a rocky Term 1. Eve has worked hard to find a balance between cocurricular activities and IB academic workload.

Well done Eve!

Yr 12 HSC and IB Trial Examinations

Best of luck to all Yr 12 students completing their Trial HSC and IB examinations over the next two weeks.

A reminder that students are to arrive 15 minutes before their exam begins. The exams will begin without the student if they are late. Yr 12 are also reminded to check approved equipment lists e.g. black pens, clear pencil cases/water bottles, no smart watches or phones etc.

In a brief Year Meeting this week, Yr 12 were encouraged to get a lift to school by parents and avoid driving directly to school. This is so students can arrive to school on time for their exam and remove any stress; particularly driving to and from an exam when accidents can happen if a student is feeling stressed and anxious during the Trial exam period.

2023 ICAS Science Competition

The 2023 ICAS Science competition will take place on Friday 25 August in school. Entry for students in Years 7-10 is voluntary. This year parents will sign up and pay for students directly in the ICAS shop. This needs to be completed before Monday 31 July. The cost of the test is $19.25. Please see the access details below.

Yr 11 check in with staff on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub and then may decide whether they want to work on their own, in small groups or with a staff member. Several students have already participated this week. The Study Centre schedule is posted for students in the iLearn Yr 11 Pastoral Page and will be posted for parents in Pulse.

Inter-House Debating 2023

This week kicks off the House Debating Competition. Each house will have a chance to compete against another house with the winners competing in the finals. Each year, this cohort has had the opportunity to participate in debating. However, this year, our Yr 11 students are coaches for Yrs 7-10. Coaches are assisting younger years with formulating strong arguments, learning the structure of debating and adhering to times and rules throughout the debate.

Thank you to the following students who have volunteered to be a coach for their house. We wish you all the best of luck over these next few weeks of competition.

Cowper Coaches: Jocelyn Wang, Josie Bannon, Apoorv Pilani, Isaac Brooks, Xander Mullin, Charli Waterland and Anderson Boris.

Gala Arts Wrap Up

Congratulations to all students who participated and competed in Gala Arts last Friday night. It was an impressive show including photography, singing, instrumentals and acting. The staging, the lighting, the performances and the energy were beautiful throughout the evening, a truly professional production. Yr 11 students involved included: Jasmine Black, Olivia Everingham, Harry Fenton, Tara Gold, Scarlett Ilic, Alfie Leach, Jocelyn Wang, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Aaron Beder, Halcyon Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Congratulations to Hallie Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black for receiving the Best Theatre piece for their incredible performance of The Play That Went Wrong.

Congratulations to Scarlett Ilic for receiving Best Vocal with her own composition Still in Love with You.

Mock Trial

Last night the Mock Trial Team competed against Marsden High in our first Knock-Out Round. Our witnesses, Sophia Rolon and Annie Zhang, gave credible evidence as a lawyer and Constable about a fight that occurred between two basketball players. Barrister 1, Josie Bannon, made a strong opening argument about the difference between competitiveness versus assault in sports and Barrister 2, Marcus Cooper-Hor, was able to unnerve the other team through his skilled cross examination of the Defence witnesses. Anneka Steele, our Solicitor, and Jack Keogh, our Magistrates Clerk, supported the team through weeks of research and preparation, leading to a well-deserved win and progression to the next round.

Da Vinci Decathlon

On Wednesday 26th July, a group of 8 Year 11 students represented Redlands in the Da Vinci Decathlon state competition, joining 150 teams from across NSW.

Students participated in competitions across ten disciplines related to the theme of Unity, including Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering, Ideation, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Cartography, and Legacy.

A heartfelt round of applause goes out to the students who demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and exceptional teamwork skills, alongside their impressive display of critical and creative thinking throughout the entire process.

Push-Up Challenge for Mental Health Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the push for better health. Over the course of 23 days, 80 students and staff members managed to complete 116,067 push-ups in total! As we split into multiple teams, an outstanding amount of $8,646 was raised to support the Lifeline foundation, which was over $3000 more than our original goal.

We would like to thank the supporters who helped our Push-up Community successfully raise that amount, the teachers who created multiple opportunities for spreading word of the challenge, and finally the 80 amazing people who pushed for the better of mental and physical health. We could not be more grateful.

Jaiden Confessore, Daisy Thomas, Grace Durrant, Johnny Wang and Jack Petering

Gala Arts

Gala Arts, the School’s Annual Creative and Performing Arts Festival, was a splendid showcase of the remarkable and diverse talents of Redlands students spanning Years 7 to 12. This event was established with the dual purpose of highlighting the creative talents of Redlands students while fostering friendly Inter-House competition and House spirit.

Gala Arts holds a deeper significance beyond being a mere showcase of talent. It encourages students to explore new avenues of their abilities, challenging them to push past their limitations and embrace personal growth. Stepping onto the stage or presenting their artworks in front of an audience can be daunting, but it instils confidence and resilience in the face of challenges. It teaches students the value of perseverance and the rewards that come from taking risks.

Gala Arts

Gala Arts, the School’s Annual Creative and Performing Arts Festival, is an outstanding showcase of the remarkable and diverse talents of Redlands students spanning Years 7 to 12. This event was established with the dual purpose of highlighting the creative talents of Redlands students while fostering friendly Inter-House competition and House spirit.

On Friday 21 July, Redlands students took to the stage at The Concourse, Chatswood and inspired the audience with outstanding performances in Dance, Instrumental, Theatre and Vocal categories. Each performer captured their artistic prowess with energy, emotion and grace. Additionally, the foyer proudly exhibited Visual Arts photography works that reflected this year’s theme, Extra-Ordinary. Winners from each category were revealed at the conclusion of the evening, adding an element of excitement and recognition to the occasion.

Participating in Gala Arts and embracing performance challenges goes beyond the applause and recognition. It is about empowering Redlands to discover their full potential, build confidence, cultivate empathy, and become well-rounded individuals prepared to take on life’s diverse challenges.

Yr 9 Design Thinking Process

Our Yr 9 students have started the term strong with their Design Thinking project. Having received their teams and specific challenges to solve, we welcomed an impressive line-up of subject matter experts into the Redlands Learning Hub on Wednesday afternoon. The Yr 9 cohort were able to ask them all sorts of questions about their challenge area. Specialist interviews allow the students to quickly upskill in a topic and gain key insights into relevant history context and innovations. While these interviews were designed to offer a systems level overview of the issue and technical knowledge, many of our teams will also undertake what we call ‘user’ interviews which are designed around the people who would be potentially using their product, service or idea. You may well be asked to participate in one!

The challenges are varied, ranging from ‘How might we avoid discarding uneaten food?’ to ‘How might we redesign the Liggins courtyard so that it provides an accessible, comfortable and sociable place for the Redlands community?’

We’d like to extend our gratitude to the subject matter experts who will continue to work with our students as they move through ideation and into prototyping potential solutions before finally pitching their team’s idea back to their subject matter expert. With thanks to Ben Perry from Plantabox, Kate McHugh from KitchenHand, Shaun Christie-David from Plate it Forward, James Petering and Tom Richardson from Redlands Rowing, Vicki Condon from Raise and Dr Phil le Page.

We’d also like to commend our Yr 9 cohort who were curious, courteous, and engaged throughout the process. We are looking forward to guiding them through the next stages.

Year 7

Yr 7 Leading the Way

This week Yr 7 experienced another ‘first’ for their Secondary School experience. They navigated Parent Teacher interviews, receiving valuable feedback on their work and efforts in Semester 1, and then reflected closely on this feedback during Tutor time. Such reflection is an important way for students to process their feedback and plan for improvement in the future.

Importantly, Yr 7 also spent time planning and preparing for these interviews so that on the night they could take the lead in managing the interviews with their parents / carers and teachers. While some students were a bit nervous, Jess and I, and the Yr 7 teachers were extremely impressed with how students conducted themselves across their interviews and the insight they showed into their own progress this year.

We hope that the experience students gained here will build their confidence and also encourage them to continue reflecting on their successes and shortfalls across the year.

Gala Arts 2023

If you were privileged enough to be at The Concourse, Chatswood last Friday evening, you would have been treated to an absolutely spectacular display of artistic and creative talent, confidence and poise, and panache. So much panache. I am, of course, talking about the Redlands Annual Spectacular that is Gala Arts.

The evening was a splendid showcase of the depths of talent existing at Redlands across Theatre, Dance, Vocal, Instrumental and Visual Arts. And it was a jolly entertaining night out!

The event also has a friendly level of competition embedded into it, as students compete for points in the House Shield to determine who will be crowned Gala Arts House Champions. This year, the competition went to Cowper House. Well done Cowper!

However, participating in Gala Arts goes beyond mere House points, applause and recognition. The event is about empowering students to discover their full potential, build confidence, cultivate teamwork, and become well-rounded individuals prepared to take on life’s diverse challenges. The time students invested into their performances, whilst also balancing their academic commitments, is a testament to the well-rounded students we are seeking to produce at Redlands.

I want to congratulate all the students who auditioned for Gala Arts, were involved in performances and who helped out as stage crew. The confidence our Yr 7s demonstrated was palpable and a variety of Yr 12 Seniors have spoken to me directly about how wonderful it was to work with such students and the amazing talent they are already showing, and only in Yr 7! It will be a bright future ahead for our Yr 7 Arts crew.

Congratulations to:

  • Leo Campbell – When I Grow Up (Theatre)
  • Phoebe Dawson-Damer – Production Crew
  • Finlay Drumm – Photography / Visual Arts
  • Akash Gohil – Photography / Visual Arts
  • Phoebe Sun – Eye of the Tiger (Dance)
  • Grace Walker-Barker – First Arabesque (Instrumental) and Photography / Visual Arts
  • Mackenzie Willis – Les Poissons (Theatre) and When I Grow Up (Theatre)

Yr 7 Dance

On Sunday 23 July, the Redlands 7-9 Senior Jazz Performance Group was invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney Eisteddfod’s Dance Gala. This group featured Year 7 students Freya Carroll, Emma Foley, Ada Grossman, Anabelle Kendrigan, Adabelle Lee, Zoe Murdoch, Phoebe Sun, Astrid Vincent and Ariella Wold. This group was selected following their 1st place win at Sydney Eisteddfod last term. Being selected for this gala is an incredible achievement and getting to perform at the Opera House is a really exciting opportunity.

We are all so proud of this group and their growth this year, especially the Yr 7s who seamlessly transitioned into working efficiently with the older dance students. Again, to see such talent in our Year 7s already suggests they have a really brighter future ahead of them.

Da Vinci Decathlon

On Tuesday 25 July, a group of eight Yr 7 students represented Redlands in the Da Vinci Decathlon state competition, joining 150 teams from across NSW!

The Da Vinci Decathlon, an interschool competition held at Knox Grammar School, is named after Leonardo da Vinci, as the tasks that students undertake mirror his diverse skills and interests. Students participated in competitions across ten disciplines related to the theme of Unity, including Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering, Ideation, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Cartography and Legacy.

A big round of applause goes out to the Yr 7 students who attended the event – Nathalie Bain, Lachlan Carter, Thys Hulsbosch, Aimee Kang, Liv Law, Lauren Rolfe, Clem Roumanoff and Aaron Oh.

Each student demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and exceptional teamwork skills, alongside their impressive display of critical and creative thinking throughout the entire process. Well done to the Y7 team!

Junior School Ethics Olympiad Team

Congratulations to our Junior School Ethics Olympiad team who will compete in this year’s National Ethics Olympiad competition later this term.

The Ethics Olympiad provides schools and universities with a unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Designed to get students thinking, talking and ultimately working together on some of the tough moral issues of our time. The objective is to do more than just help them think through ethical issues; it is to teach students how to think through ethical issues together, as fellow citizens in a complex moral and political community.

Our students will face appropriate and interesting ethical cases and compete against schools from across the country via Zoom in a competition in which we were victorious last year.

Secondary Sport

Coaching our junior teams is a linchpin in the success of the senior teams as it lays the foundation for athletic excellence and fosters a culture of growth and development Sir Alex Ferguson is quoted as saying ‘Character is forged in the youth ranks’. The vision, mission and values we are following within the sports department are creating strong team culture that permeate to the senior level, leading to success on and off the field. Coaching junior athletes allows for early skill acquisition and proper technique development. As these young athletes progress, they become the talent pool that senior teams can draw from.

Over the past 12 months the Sports Department has been on a journey of development, we have welcomed a number of new staff to roles to guide students in their journey through school and sport. We welcome Ms Mia Lundquist to the Sports Department as the Director of Strength & Conditioning, Mia started at the beginning on Term 3 and has already had a profound impact on the team and the Fitness Centre. Hailing from South Australia Mia joins us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Strength & Conditioning space, working at a number of school and also sporting organisations. Mia was also in a professional football program with the Adelaide United Football Club both as a player and then as the Head of Athletic Performance.

Bus Transport

As a school we pride ourselves on the way in which our students participate and train in their chosen fields, providing opportunities for all students to participate in a range of activities is something that we will continue to do. Providing transport to those activities is something that we do as a school, this is a gentle reminder that when travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

  • Students who are travelling on the Redlands transport need to adhere to the Road Transport Regulations, which include remaining seated while the bus is in motion and wearing seatbelts at all times.
  • Students need to wear their Redlands Sports Uniform (and football uniform) for trainings and games. Students do not need to take their school bags out to Macquarie University Playing Fields on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons unless they are being collected from the venue. Students were given a football bootbag, which would hold their boots, shin pads,a water bottle and any medications they require. All other items should be kept in lockers until they return after training.
  • There is to be no food eaten on the buses.

Students who fail the meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Summer Sport Registration

The 2023/24 Summer Sport Registration link will be opened tomorrow afternoon, students will have until Wednesday 9 August to complete their registration. A reminder of the following:

  • Students in Year 12 2023 do not need to complete the registration.
  • Students in Year 11 2023 are reminded they need to complete 1 Representative Sport for their final year of school.
  • Students who have been participating in a Non-Representative Winter Sport must complete a Representative Summer Sport.
  • If you have any questions regarding Summer Sport, please reach out to the relevant member of the Sports department.

Football

It was a tough round of Redlands Football after the holiday break, with the Boys Football program coming up against one of the ISA powerhouse schools, St Patrick’s College. The Boys teams put up a great fight across the board with some competitive games which was great to see after the break. The Girls Football teams played the majority of their games against Barker College, another strong school in the Football program. With some mixed results, it was fantastic to see our girls in close games against some of the strongest teams in the competition. Congratulations to the students who have been named in the team of the week!

A number of our teams will be travelling via bus this Saturday 29 July, please check the fixture details carefully on Redlands Pulse or your individual student timetable. For students travelling by bus, all buses will depart from the Adams Centre. If you will be providing your own transport, please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au so that the coaches are not waiting for you at the bus on Saturday morning.

Save the date for the End of Season Football function which will be held on Thursday 7 September at Dee Why RSL. Tickets will be available soon!

Hockey

It was fantastic to see our Hockey students back after the holiday break. In Round 8 the 1st Girls Hockey team had a bye, so they have an additional week to find their hockey form after the break. The Junior Girls Hockey team were straight back into a game in Round 8 and they haven’t missed a beat over the holiday break, coming out with a massive 8-0 win against SACS. The team continues their fantastic form, finishing with a fantastic team win that saw all players stepping up!

Both of the Redlands Hockey teams will be travelling via bus in Round 9 for their fixtures this Saturday 29 July. A reminder that if you will be providing your own transport please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au so that the coaches are not waiting for you at the bus on Saturday morning.

The End of Season Hockey Celebration tickets are now available! Purchase tickets now by clicking on the image below:

Netball

As we are reaching the end of the ISA 2023 season, please take as many photos and videos as you can of your daughter’s teams so we can produce a fabulous video montage for our Presentation Night on Sept 6 at Dee Why RSL. These images will really help create a wonderful sense of community and memories from the season and we would really like as many images as we can for the night. Get clicking please!

Please upload your photos and videos here.

Good luck to all this weekend, we have 2 more fixtures  ( 29 July and 5 August) then I will be able to publish the Semi Finals schedule. Come on Redlands! I hope to see lots of our teams in the semis at Netball Central, Homebush on 12 August.

Creative Kids – Learning How To Use Expression in Drama!

Our class has been learning how to use facial expression to show emotion and physicality to convey character. In our class today we explored emotions such as anger, surprise, boredom and fear. We played the game ‘Walk like…’, in which we used our bodies to establish character and scene. This term, we are learning The Ants Go Marching, which develops our memory, focus, and co-ordination. Drama is a lot of fun! Jessica Fallico – Drama Tutor

Yr 8 Drama Performance Evenings 2023

The Yr 8 performance night Australian Landscapes is taking place in the Drama Studio on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 August (Week 4, Term 3) at 6:30pm. This term, students have explored the work of Australian writers and performers who have contributed to Australian drama and theatre. Students have engaged in a range of dramatic forms, performance styles and theatre conventions related to Australian theatre and developed a broad understanding of our cultural heritage and the characteristics of the Australian psyche. This is their first ever performance night examination, and we are very proud of the newly learnt performance skills they have developed and demonstrated. Come and watch our Yr 8 Drama students perform extracts from fantastic plays such as Lockie Leonard, Hating Alison Ashley and Burnt, just to name a few. We look forward to seeing you there in the audience!
