Year 10

National Reconciliation Week

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, Be a Voice for Generations, urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better, more just Australia for all of us. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

Yr 10 Students Excel in Computing Competitions!

A group of talented Yr 10 students demonstrated their exceptional skills in the world of computing. In the first round of the prestigious Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC) 16 brilliant minds from Years 7 to 11 participated, showcasing their abilities to produce programmed solutions to computational problems.

The OUCC serves as a platform to foster the development of computational skills among students. The initial round, an open competition, builds upon the principles employed in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition. Those who excel in the first round receive an invitation to the exclusive second round. It is worth noting that last year, Redlands proudly had two students who participated in Round 2 and achieved outstanding results.

Two weeks ago, 47 students from Redlands participated in the Computation and Algorithmic Thinking competition (CAT). This event offered students a chance to enhance their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The CAT competition featured unique “three-stage tasks” that encouraged students to devise informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing complexity or size.

In recognition of their tremendous achievements, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated in these challenging competitions. Their dedication and hard work have undoubtedly paid off. The results will be emailed directly to the students, and certificates will be awarded during their year assembly to celebrate their accomplishments.

Among the remarkable participants, we want to highlight the exceptional achievements of Sophie Yu, Remy Pascoe and Jessica Lee, who received High Distinctions, achieving near perfect scores of 34 out of 36. The Redlands School community takes immense pride in the accomplishments of these students. Their exceptional abilities in the field of computing have not only brought honour to themselves but also to the School. We are confident that their passion and talent will continue to flourish, and we eagerly anticipate their future achievements.

Once again, congratulations to all the talented individuals who participated in the OUCC and CAT competitions. Your success serves as an inspiration to other students and a testament to your unwavering commitment.

Redlands Athletics Carnival 2023 – Thursday 8 June

The event will be held on Thursday 8 June at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, (Edwin Flack Ave, Sydney Olympic Park). The Athletics Carnival is a compulsory school day. The Carnival is a significant school event that contributes to House and School Spirit. All students are expected to participate by either competing or supporting their peers. As this event is a compulsory school day, permission is implied for each son and/or daughter. All students are required to be at school no later than 7:15 am – except for students who are participating in the 1500m race or use Redlands Pittwater, Inner West or Eastern Suburbs bus services. The Parent Information Letter and further details for the day can be found on Pulse, under Secondary School Sport.

Yr 12 Winter Woolies Appeal

As the temperature continues to drop, we are reminded of those who may not have the resources to stay cozy during the Winter season. But fear not, because together, we can make a difference and bring warmth to those in need. As part of the Yr 12 ‘Give back’ initiative, the Winter Woollies Appeal, aims to collect and distribute warm clothing and blankets to individuals and families who may be facing the harsh realities of Winter. Please raid your closets and share the warmth! Gather gently used or new coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, and hats that you no longer need. Every piece you donate will help someone stay snug during the cold months ahead. Please bring all items down to the Student Services Centre foyer and place in the yellow bin, before the end of Week 9. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

Friday Arvo Athletics

This coming Friday, Friday Arvo Athletics will begin. The session will run every Friday afternoon (3:30 – 5pm) this term and next. There will be sprints training with Sprints Coach Rich Frost, Middle Distance with Coaches Nick Walker and Jess Carroll and throws with Coach Jason Turner. Sprints and Middle Distance training will begin this Friday, Throws training will start next week. All students participating will be required to get changed and then head directly to the Undercroft for a group warm up which will begin at 3:30pm. Students participating in the training sessions are to wear Redlands sports uniform. This is a great opportunity for students to prepare for the upcoming Redlands Athletics Carnival and ISA Athletics Carnival next term, or to use this session as fitness for their rep sport. All levels of ability welcome.
