Issue 16 2023 Term 2 Week 6 - 01 Jun 2023

From The Principal

I have often said over the first half of the year how honoured and privileged I feel to be the Principal of this wonderful school and my experiences yesterday certainly reinforced those feelings.

I started the day by popping into the Secondary School Choir rehearsal before school to get a sneak peak (or better yet listen) of our singers in the lead up to the Senior Music Festival in a few weeks’ time. Judging by the beautiful voices I heard yesterday, it will be an amazing concert.

Later in the morning I joined in some teamwork activities on the Junior Campus Oval with Ms Angus’ Kindergarten class and observed the students relishing their learning. (Thank you to India who helped teach me some of the teamwork skills.)

The Secondary School then had a moving Reconciliation Assembly which was led by our House Captains. David Barnett from the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council gave a Welcome to Country and shared some of his insights on reconciliation before senior students shared some of their powerful reflections, as well.

Later in the day I attended the Transition Gold 2024 Information Session and was so impressed to hear how our whole school Learning Platform and Wellbeing Program are integrated into our curriculum for our earliest learners. I then caught up with some parents as we watched a large number of Prep School students enjoy an AFL development program in the afternoon.

My day finished attending the Year 10 HSC and IB Subject Selection Evening and speaking to numerous students and parents who were both excited and slightly daunted about the many opportunities being afforded to them for their senior studies. (I particularly enjoyed speaking to those students who were in my English class back in Year 7 and hearing how they have progressed in their learning since then.)

Days like yesterday truly make me feel proud and privileged to be a part of this School.

It was great to see the engagement of our students, parents and staff at the Secondary School Sports ‘Pink Sock’ Charity Round last weekend and the student-led Festival on the Fahl during Friday lunchtime, raising valuable funds for Breast Cancer Research. There was a wonderful spirit on display at the many different fixtures I attended.

I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you the Redlands RPFA for the Staff Appreciation Morning Teas on the Junior Campus on Wednesday and on the Senior Campus this Friday. The continued support of our parent community further strengthens the partnership of staff and parents as we work collectively to support and develop the young people under our care.

Redlands Gala Ball

I am very much looking forward to celebrating our community spirit at our Redlands Gala Ball in August, while also raising funds for our means-tested scholarships program. I was delighted to be able to award two means-tested scholarships earlier this term to two students who will join Redlands in Year 7 2024. Due to the generous support from our community, we are very proud to be able to provide the opportunity of a Redlands education to these deserving students who would otherwise not be able to attend our School. If you wish to join us at the Gala Ball or would like to learn more, please visit the Foundation section of Note Day.

Community Update

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This important week was explored through a range of important activities and reflections throughout the School.  Reconciliation focused assemblies were held in our Junior and Secondary Schools where powerful personal reflections were articulately shared, while staff and students from our Prep School have marked this important week by sharing stories, creating shared artwork and enjoying conversation without judgement.

It was a pleasure to welcome the parents and carers of our youngest students to our 2024 Pre-Kindergarten (Transition Gold) information session earlier this week. Redlands House is one of the very few Preschools in Australia to have received a perfect rating of Exceeding Quality Standard in all seven quality areas by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority. The two-year program, for children aged 3-5 years, incorporates the very best early childhood teaching theories and practices from around the world. Our Pre-Kindergarten (Transition Gold) Class provides a five day a week program for 4 to 5 year-old children, preparing them well for the transition to our Prep School.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. Our RPFA have been busy this week delivering staff appreciation morning teas across both campuses. These have of course been greatly received by our staff and further highlight the vital partnership and support our parents and carers provide in the growth and prosperity of the School.

Tickets continue to sell fast for the highly anticipated Redlands Gala Ball. All proceeds from this gala fundraising event will benefit the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship Appeal. For more information on tickets and sponsorship of this uniquely Redlands event please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Redlands Learning Hub – Celebrating Three Years Since its Opening

Last week I shared reflections about the Roof Top Garden. This week we look at the ground floor which is the home for Visual Arts and Innovative Design. Kathy Reid, Innovative Design Subject Coordinator, shared her reflection:

The Learning Hub has created a space for the Innovative Design team to think outside the box. The addition of a prototyping studio has allowed students to practice real world design practices such as CAD (computer aided designed) and CAM (computer aided manufacturing) as well as more traditional methods of design. Because the Innovative Design rooms are on the bottom floor and the rooms open onto the Fahl Garden we have the opportunity for students to move outside to test prototypes and final designs in a large open space. The students particularly enjoy the gallery walls in each room where exemplary examples of student work is regularly showcased.

Redlands Gala Ball – Early Bird Tickets Closing Soon

We are thrilled with the overwhelming support and interest in this year’s gala fundraising event Redlands Gala Ball with a gourmet three course dinner and drinks throughout the evening, live entertainment and dancing, auctions and raffles. As we are likely to sell out by the end of this term, secure your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

It’s easy to book, simply nominate your Year Group or guests you would like to be seated with, on tables of 10. This event has a limited capacity, please make sure you book your tickets early by clicking on the invitation below.

Proceeds from the Ball

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Appeal. A means-tested scholarship named after Dr Sue Morey AM RL 1959 to honour her contributions to public health, will be awarded to a Year 7 student commencing in 2025.

Due to a generous support of our community – parents, alumni, staff and wider community – we currently have 3 Foundation scholars benefiting from Redlands education – Year 11, Year 8 and Year 7. The additional two scholarships have been awarded by our Principal Sean Corcoran to successful candidates commencing Year 7 in 2024. Means-tested scholarships are awarded to those students who demonstrate achievements across a number of fields – academic results, co-curricular involvement as well as service.

RPFA

Teacher Appreciation

Part of the mission of the RPFA is to promote a strong sense of community among parents and caregivers, students and faculty. At Redlands, our teachers are a crucial part of that relationship and facilitate the vital connection between learning, community and growth. One of the RPFA’s most important jobs is making sure our teachers and staff know how much the parent community appreciates them and recognises how hard they work. This week, our committee organised morning teas with pastries and fruit for our fabulous teachers and support staff in Prep and Junior Schools on Wednesday and in Secondary School on Friday. Our appreciation should not be limited to just one week. Be generous with your gratitude and encourage your students to do the same – thanks to all the class parents who organised cards and other activities!

Pink Sock Recap

Thanks to everyone who participated in Pink Sock Charity Day last Friday and Saturday, rallying support for breast cancer research. The Festival on the Fahl rocked the Senior Campus – where students enjoyed live rock band performances alongside a sausage sizzle, bake sale and more; Prep and Junior School students wore splashes of pink and donated gold coins; over 200 pairs of socks were sold at the Uniform Shop; Friends of Groups sold mountains of treats at various sports fixtures and we also had donations from parents via Humanitix. Funds are still being reconciled, but over $9,000 was raised for this great cause.

Second Hand Uniforms

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support our Second Hand Uniform Sales. We are looking into the possibility of holding another sale one weekend later this term… but we need more stock! If you have clean, current uniforms to donate to this cause, please drop them off to the Uniform Shop! We’d love to get more blazers in larger sizes, long sleeved white shirts, fleeces and tracksuits. Please note we are not collecting any items for recycling (eg old sports uniforms) at this time. Please also do not bring in: used socks; dirty, stained or torn items; items purchased from external parties (Marks & Spencer’s, Next) as we cannot sell these items and are running out of storage space.

Gala Ball

Purchase tickets to this fantastic black tie event to be held at the Fullerton Hotel (formerly the Westin) on Sat 12 Aug. You don’t need to organise a table to attend! Just nominate a Year Group(s) you’d like to sit with and Foundation will work their magic.

Yr 9 Connect with Country in Arnhem Land this Reconciliation Week

It’s been a quieter week on the Senior Campus with Yr 9 away on camp. On Wednesday, our Student Leaders offered a reflective Reconciliation Assembly to the school community. Yr 11 and 12 engaged in person in Redlands Hall and the students in Yr 7, 8 and 10 watched via live stream from their vertical House groupings. David Barnett from the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council delivered the Welcome to Country and delivered a meaningful and at times amusing, address to the students. He ended by having them each turn to each other and express love in an indigenous language. A thoughtful part of the assembly was offered by Alfie Leach and Antonia Morgan, who shared some reflections from their recent visit to Arnhem Land. Alfie spoke beautifully about how to connect with Country:

“One way to connect to country is to just stop, and take a minute to absorb everything around you. In a practical sense, on your walk home from the bus stop, or to the shops, just slow down, take your earphones out and look around, listen to all the sounds that the land is making, breathe in the air and try to allow yourself to relax, try to empty your mind and really feel that connection with everything around you. It is extraordinary how fulfilling and stress relieving this can be, especially at the end of a long day. I’d encourage you all to try this at some point today, whether it be in between classes, at lunch time, on your way home or walking the dog. Just take a minute, and slow down to absorb and appreciate the captivating land around you.”

Antonio then went on to explore the impact of Reconciliation Week:

“The theme for this year’s Reconciliation Week is ‘be a voice for generations’. To me this theme encompasses what reconciliation aims to achieve. To be a voice for generations means for us to recognise privilege and responsibility. It means to reflect and acknowledge our history, our past and where we wish to go in the future. It means to listen to all with open ears and to develop an understanding of the views around us. It means to open our eyes and challenge our perspectives in order to see change in our world. It means, at the core of all things, to ensure the voices of each individual are heard, equally, loudly, and clearly. This theme fosters the change we wish to see in the future, a future we hope is near.”

The past week has provided further evidence of the talents and skills of students across the Secondary School. The following Yr 9 students recently competed at the U15 Boys and Girls NSW All School AFL Championships in Albury.

  • Oscar Carlyon – U15 Boys
  • Heidi Charles – U15 Girls
  • Lachlan Price-Pontifex – U15 Boys
  • Heidi de Saxe – U15 Girls

Lachlan was appointed captain of the NSWCIS U15 Boys team. The Boys team won the All Schools Championship winning all four games and the Girls finished runners up.

Lachlan was also voted ‘Player of the Tournament’ by the Selectors. Both Lachlan and Heidi were then selected in the respective NSW All School U15 AFL teams to compete at the National Championships in Ballarat July 22 – July 29.

Also this week, our Senior Theatresports Team competed against 8 schools at the Semi-Finals Theatresports Schools Challenge. Congratulations to them as they placed Second! They will now perform at the Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre. The students are incredibly excited and this is an exceptional achievement for: Phoebe Barnett (Yr 12), Claudia Lalich (Yr 12), Hallie Hunt (Yr 11) and Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11).

Year 12

Pastoral Focus: School Refusal

Though many children will refuse to go to school at some stage in their lives, school refusal is very different from truancy. It is a more serious condition than separation anxiety and often stems from a child’s anxiety about school. They may be worried about their school work, interacting with other kids, dealing with teachers, playing sports or being away from family. School refusal is a behaviour that can also be accompanied by sadness or depression, physical symptoms and social isolation. This condition is equally common amongst boys and girls, from all socioeconomic groups and across both primary and secondary levels.

The following articleI was a school refuser for years – now I have five university degrees’ shares the inspiring journey of Monash University Lecturer, Kate Gaffney, who overcame school refusal and went on to achieve five university degrees. Despite facing extreme anxiety and aversion towards attending school, Kate exhibited remarkable determination and resilience. Kate pursued higher education with unwavering commitment, completing one degree after another, defying societal expectations and proving that past struggles do not define one’s future. The story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the potential for personal growth even in the face of significant challenges.

Student Achievement

Claudia Lalich and Phoebe Barnett were part of the Redlands Senior Theatresports team that placed second at the Theatresports Schools Challenge Semi Finals. They will now perform at the Grand Final at the Enmore Theatre. Congratulations Claudia and Phoebe!

Festival in the Fahl

Last Friday marked a truly unforgettable day as our exceptional Yr 12 Captains, Josie Simpson and Dan Close, took charge and orchestrated the incredible Festival in the Fahl to raise funds for the esteemed Breast Cancer Foundation. The sight of countless students from across the Secondary School proudly donning shades of pink in support of this noble cause warmed our hearts and filled us with immense pride.

Thank you to each and every student and parent who generously contributed to the bake sale, turning it into a resounding success. Your mouthwatering treats not only tasted amazing but also played an integral role in our fundraising efforts. A special thank you goes out to the Yr 12 volunteers who selflessly dedicated their time and energy to the Festival in the Fahl, delighting attendees with their enthusiasm and leading a multitude of captivating activities.

We are thrilled beyond measure to share that the Festival in the Fahl exceeded all expectations, raising an astonishing amount of over $5000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. This remarkable achievement serves as a testament to the collective power of our unity and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

By standing together and embracing the vibrant atmosphere of the Festival, we not only championed an important cause but also demonstrated our solidarity and support for those impacted by breast cancer. The funds raised will play a crucial role in advancing vital research, spreading awareness, and providing essential assistance to individuals and families battling this illness.

To every individual who played a part in this extraordinary accomplishment, whether through donning pink attire, crafting delectable treats, volunteering their time, or making generous donations, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. Your kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on the journey toward a world free from the burdens of breast cancer.

Let us continue to stand united, raising awareness, extending support, and empowering those in need. The overwhelming success of the Festival in the Fahl serves as a powerful reminder of our incredible community spirit and the transformative impact we can achieve when we join forces.

Well done to all the Yr 12 students who participated in the Pink Sock Winter Sports Round last weekend. All the proceeds from the pink socks which were sold went towards the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Please raid your closets and share the warmth! Gather gently used or new coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, and hats that you no longer need. Every piece you donate will help someone stay snug during the cold months ahead. Please bring all items down to the Student Services Centre foyer and place in the yellow bin, before the end of Week 9.

Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

Reconciliation Week

This week, students were offered various opportunities to continue learning about and building awareness of Reconciliation Week. On Monday, there was an optional presentation at lunch by Sharon Brindley, owner of Jala Jala Treats, a First Nations owned company. Following the short talk about ethical purchasing and running of her business, students were shown the beginning of the documentary In My Blood it Runs. The second half of the movie was being shown Thursday during lunch.

On Wednesday, all Yr 11 and 12 students engaged in a Welcome to Country by David Barnett, from the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council. Alfie Leach and Antonia Morgan then spoke about their experiences in Arnhem Land, and what reconciliation means to them. David Barnett asked all students to consider the one race we should all acknowledge and work to support, the human race. He also told students that the indigenous communities are not reconciling with the current population of Australians as people living today are not responsible for the past. However, all people are working together to mend the impact of the past and working together to always respect and love one another moving forward.

Alfie’s message included advice for how you can connect to country on a daily basis. He said,

“One way to connect to country is to just stop and take a minute to absorb everything around you. It is extraordinary how fulfilling and stress relieving this can be, especially at the end of a long day. In Sydney we often look at occurrences in nature as inconvenient to the strict timetable we have in our life. For instance, we look at rain as a disturbance to our daily lives – maybe our bus runs late or our bags get wet. We look at it in a bad light Instead of looking at rain as the nurturer and replenisher of the country that surround us and how without that rain we couldn’t grow our crops, drink our water, keep our soil together and in a dramatic sense, society and civilisation would be obsolete without it. Just take a minute and slow down to absorb and appreciate the captivating land around you.”

Antonia’s message was about what reconciliation means to her. She shared,

” Reconciliation is the epitome of what is means to strive towards unity in our country. I believe that it represents a day to confront the past, our history and the wrongdoings of those that came before us and that continue today whilst dedicating ourselves to paving the way for a greater future in which voices are heard, diversity is embraced, and equality is reached. The theme for this year’s reconciliation week is ‘be a voice for generations’. It means to open our eyes and challenge our perspectives in order to see change in our world. It means, at the core of all things, to ensure the voices of each individual are heard equally, loudly, and clearly. This theme fosters the change we wish to see in the future, a future we hope is near.”

Careers Expo Excursion

The Careers Expo excursion gave Year 11 an opportunity to ask questions to help them make informed choices about their paths after school. The Expo provided resources and information for tertiary courses, career and employment options, study strategies, gap years and more.

Balmoral Burn Recap

Last Sunday, Redlands had three teams compete in the Balmoral Burn, raising awareness for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. In a little under two weeks, our three Redlands teams fundraised over $1000, which was a great effort! Each of our runners left nothing on the finish line, giving their absolute all as they reached the top of the very steep Awaba Street. Congratulations to the Yr 11 Team: Isaac Brooks, Conor Petersen, Hamish Campbell and Flynn Kieran for their massive effort in preparing and completing this challenging run!

Overall, our Redlands Senior Boys team finished 4th and Senior Girls team finished 9th. Great results overall! Redlands had the 5th fastest time on the day out of 23 schools.

National Reconciliation Week

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, Be a Voice for Generations, urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better, more just Australia for all of us. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

Yr 10 Students Excel in Computing Competitions!

A group of talented Yr 10 students demonstrated their exceptional skills in the world of computing. In the first round of the prestigious Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC) 16 brilliant minds from Years 7 to 11 participated, showcasing their abilities to produce programmed solutions to computational problems.

The OUCC serves as a platform to foster the development of computational skills among students. The initial round, an open competition, builds upon the principles employed in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition. Those who excel in the first round receive an invitation to the exclusive second round. It is worth noting that last year, Redlands proudly had two students who participated in Round 2 and achieved outstanding results.

Two weeks ago, 47 students from Redlands participated in the Computation and Algorithmic Thinking competition (CAT). This event offered students a chance to enhance their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The CAT competition featured unique “three-stage tasks” that encouraged students to devise informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing complexity or size.

In recognition of their tremendous achievements, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated in these challenging competitions. Their dedication and hard work have undoubtedly paid off. The results will be emailed directly to the students, and certificates will be awarded during their year assembly to celebrate their accomplishments.

Among the remarkable participants, we want to highlight the exceptional achievements of Sophie Yu, Remy Pascoe and Jessica Lee, who received High Distinctions, achieving near perfect scores of 34 out of 36. The Redlands School community takes immense pride in the accomplishments of these students. Their exceptional abilities in the field of computing have not only brought honour to themselves but also to the School. We are confident that their passion and talent will continue to flourish, and we eagerly anticipate their future achievements.

Once again, congratulations to all the talented individuals who participated in the OUCC and CAT competitions. Your success serves as an inspiration to other students and a testament to your unwavering commitment.

Week 6 – Festival on the Fahl and Reconciliation Week

This most recent week for Yr 7 has been one of laughs and enjoyment, but also one filled with serious messages about reconciliation, responsible technology use and how to be kind to and supportive of one another.

Last Friday saw many laughs and great enthusiasm as Redlands embraced the mantra ‘wear it pink’ and celebrated a Festival on the Fahl, all in the name of raising money for breast cancer research. Organised by our wonderful Yr 12 leaders, the festival had lolly-jar guessing competitions, hot chocolate stands, baked goods, sausage sizzles and a range of others food treats for students to indulge in. There was also live music, skill-tester games and a very popular three-legged race! A range of our Yr 7s became experts at the art of three-legged racing. Of course, some were more successful than others, but it was great to see so many students getting out there to have a bit of a laugh with their friends!

Chapel for Reconciliation Week

On Monday, we started the week with some valuable messages around Reconciliation Week in our Yr 7 Chapel. Messages regarding the importance of respecting other cultures and taking time to understand and value our own indigenous heritage were shared with students. Students were also encouraged to contribute symbolic images to a ‘reconciliation campfire’, as a way of encouraging them to consider what they can do to further the noble cause of reconciliation in Australia.

Thank you too to Kate Rintoul and Clemence Leroux who started our Chapel Service off leading our singing of Be Thou my Vision!

Ms Van de Peer’s Special Assembly

On Tuesday, Ms Van de Peer (Head of Secondary School) and Ms Partington (Deputy Principal) spoke to Yr 7 and Yr 8, offering important messages around how to embody our Redlands values, act responsibly in online forums and treat each other with kindness. Ms Partington made the pertinent comment that we expect all Redlanders to be upstanders and not bystanders. We want our students to show moral courage and call out inappropriate behaviour when they see it.

Ms Van de Peer then followed this discussion with some clear messages around appropriate online behaviour, particularly when using social media forums. She discussed how important it is to treat others with kindness both online and in real life (‘IRL’ – a new acronym for me!). She also outlined clearly how behaviours like selling or using vapes and sending others questionable pictures of yourself or others is illegal.

Yr 7 students were attentive and engaged in this session. Ms Van de Peer sent a clear outline of this discussion home to parents/carers on Tuesday, and I encourage you to discuss these points with your children. You can find more useful information to guide your discussions through our Digital Citizenship and Safety page on Pulse.

Please also note that in order to support a focused end to the term, Yr 7 students were reminded that mobile phones should be kept in their lockers throughout the school day. Phones seen in class without prior teacher permission, or out at recess or lunch will be confiscated and handed into the YA office for collection at the end of the day.

The Wonderful Theatre of English 7M

This week Yr 7 English classes worked through their final week’s study of David Almond’s novel, Skellig. Many teachers took the opportunity to engage their students in an activity where they transformed key chapters of the novel into scripts, which they then performed for their classes. 7M engaged particularly well in this task, creating strong scripts and performing with confidence. There were definitely a few drama buffs amongst the group, and everyone rose to the occasion to present some engaging theatrical representations. Well done 7M!

Assembly for Reconciliation Week

On Wednesday, an informative and engaging assembly was held as part of Reconciliation Week. The assembly began with a meaningful Welcome to Country from David Barnett from the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council. He discussed his own experience as a member of the Stolen Generation and explained the importance of Reconciliation Week to him. This was followed by some thoughtful comments from Yr 11 students, Alfie Leach and Antonia Morgan, who offered reflections on their recent trip to Arnhem Land and provided practical ways that we can connect to country in our day to day lives. Students were engaged in this meaningful assembly.

Student Recognition:

Ari Abe-Apostolou – Journey to Canberra

Last week, Ari journeyed to Canberra where he had the opportunity to speak to the Federal Health Minister, Hon. Mark Butler, and other medical professionals, as he undertook various media interviews at Parliament House. He was there to discuss the listing on the PBS of a new drug for the treatment of children born with dwarfism. It is the first medication in the world to treat this condition. As one of three families present at Parliament House for the official launch of this medication, Ari was a great advocate for his condition. If you wish to view the news report on this event, you can find it HERE.

Ari has also expressed gratitude to the Redlands community for supporting him over the years and he looks forward to continuing to advocate for all genetic conditions through Jeans for Genes day. So, keep an eye on this space for that support initiative, which is coming up next term!

Charlie Lee – CAT Competition

A few weeks ago, 47 Redlanders sat the Computation and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition. The CAT competition gives students the opportunity to develop their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The competition incorporates unique ‘three-stage tasks’ that encourage students to develop informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing size or complexity.

Congratulations to all the students involved in what was quite a challenging competition. Special mention goes to Charlie Lee (Yr 7) who received a High Distinction – achieving a perfect score of 36. This is an exceptional achievement!

ISA Cross Country

Last Thursday a collection of Yr 7 students competed in the ISA Cross-Country and we saw some impressive results achieved. Congratulations to the students below for their excellent efforts!

    • Elisabella Ty 8th place in the 12 years 3k
    • Angus Baird 7th place in the 12 years 3k
    • Alex Taylor 8th place in the 13 years 3k

Natalie Bain, Mackenzie Willis and Sarah Yates – Balmoral Burn

Last Sunday, we also had a few Yr 7 students challenge themselves by competing in the Balmoral Burn – a race from Balmoral Beach up Awaba St – to raise money for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. Congratulations to Natalie Bain, Mackenzie Willis and Sarah Yates who were part of three Redlands teams who ran the race. In a little under two weeks, our three Redlands teams, fundraised over $1000, which was a great effort! Each of our runners, left nothing on the finish line, giving their absolute all as they reached the top of the very VERY steep Awaba St.

Wear A Splash of Pink – Friday 26 May

It was wonderful to see a thread of pink around our campus last week as we supported the Breast Cancer Foundation by wearing a ‘Splash of Pink’ today. Through gold coin donations, we were delighted to add to the wider school collection across all three sections of the school by collected the sum of $623.

Buddy Picnic

On the same day, our Buddy classes across the Preschool, Prep and Junior sections enjoyed the opportunity to have lunch together as another vertical connection opportunity for our students. It is always incredibly heart-warming to see the students in these situations and the older ones really take the lead in mentoring a sense of school community. Some of our Yr 6 students had also taken the initiative to create some conversation starters for the students in Yrs 4-6, which helped enormously and created much laughter too!

National Reconciliation Week

In our assembly this week, our student leaders beautifully articulated the significance of National Reconciliation Week to rest of the students in their own words.

As a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia, the students also talked about the theme for 2023 to Be a Voice for Generations.

Year 7, 2024 Parent Transition Information

Last Friday, I joined our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and the Head of Secondary School, Ms Gemma Van de Peer, in welcoming our current Yr 6 parents to an important transition morning which encompassed tours of our Senior Campus. Whilst I focused solely on the transition element, Ms Van de Peer and Mr Corcoran were able to share a lot more of the specific details around the Secondary School offerings and the slides from the presentation have been placed on the Yr 6 page of Pulse for parent reference.

Teacher Appreciation Morning Tea

Our staff were extremely grateful to receive some delectable morning tea treats this week from the RPFA on behalf of our parents and carers. The generous thought was very much appreciated and enjoyed and on behalf of the staff, I share our gratitude for this kind gesture.

Sydney Writers’ Festival

The Junior School writers’ workshop club had the privilege of attending the Sydney Writers’ Festival on Tuesday, and they came away so inspired that they returned to school only to spend the next one hundred minutes on their own writing, even then protesting when it was time to pack up to go home.

In the students’ words, here are a few of the wonderful authors and illustrators that they heard from.

Maryam Master by Sienna Benz and Sophie Williams

Maryam Master is a devoted woman who is a refugee from Iran. She left Iran when she was just in second grade and her parents decided it was finally time to leave because of the war. She has a tough background, but she has pursued her dreams and goals into being a mother, a play writer, a movie writer, a dog lover and most importantly an author. She has written two books, No Words and Exit Through the Gift Shop, which she was very proud to present to young writers during the event. No Words is about a 12-year-old boy who is a refugee from Iran that came to Australia, and it was inspired by Maryam’s own experiences as a child.  The other book that she wrote was based on a girl in high school and how she faced her fears during her horrid time experiencing cancer and how she survived emotionally from the bullies and obstacles that life gave her. Maryam Master loves to inspire children to be ambitious in anything they do and to keep going when problems are faced.

Jordan Gould and Richard Pritchard by Aria Amos and Ruby Tew

Richard Pritchard and Jordan Gould invite us into the world of adventure and fantasy with their Wylah series, featuring the first female Aboriginal warrior in a middle-grade book ever! One Aboriginal man and one New Zealander have come together to write amazing fantasies. The authors have taken real-life animals and turned them into wonderful creatures in Wylah. What does this series not have?!!

F. Steadman by Madeleine Hogue and Marcel Whitelaw

During our experience at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, one of the highlights was when the author of the Skandar series, A.F. Steadman, set foot on stage. Her books are set on a small island in between Wales, Ireland and England, where bloodthirsty wild unicorns roam freely. It is compulsory that when you turn thirteen you do the Hatchery Test, which is when you find out if you’re destined for a unicorn. If you are destined to bond with a unicorn, you get picked up at midnight by a rider official to be flown by helicopter to the mirror cliffs on the right side of the island. You are then transported to the Hatchery where you line up to place your hand on the large door and hope it will open for you. In the scenario where the Hatchery door does not open, you are immediately transported back to your home, never to return again. If you manage to open the door, on the other hand, you go inside the Hatchery and place your hand on your destined unicorn egg, waiting for its sharp horn to puncture the egg and cut your hand. This scar is where all your elemental magic is formed and moulded into weapons. After your unicorn has hatched and you have named it, you travel to the Eyrie, the place you will live, bond, and train with your unicorn. You live in a treehouse with your quartet; four people (including you) each having a different allied element. In the Eyrie, you will train for five years, (trusting you are not declared a nomad) then to compete in the Chaos Cup, where the most powerful and successful unicorns and riders race against each other, engaging in airborne elemental battles. The winner of the Chaos Cup will become Commodore of Chaos, and the leader of the island for a year. A.F. Steadman is a lovely writer and person, and we greatly enjoyed meeting her at the Sydney Writers’ Festival.

Redlands Student Musicians

Yesterday, a group of talented, young Redlands students from Kindy to Yr 8 performed for residents at Lansdowne Gardens, a local aged care home in Neutral Bay. Quickly changing after sport swapping tennis rackets and hockey sticks for cellos and violins, the group provided great joy through song and dance for the residents and I am grateful to the students and our parents for creating this special experience for our local community.

National Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievement, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. In and around the Prep School, staff and students have marked this important week by sharing stories, creating shared artwork and enjoying conversation without judgement in yarning circles.

I encourage our prep families to enjoy the Reconciliation display in the Prep Reception that has been created by Ms McKenzie and Mrs Simes. They have provided the foundations to build a space where we can reflect upon the meaning of Reconciliation. The story  Respect by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson, highlights the beautiful essence of First Nations Cultures and provides a platform for students to read and illustrate their understanding and reflections.

For families who would like to continue this conversation at home, please find a list of resources below that are useful when discussing Reconciliation with children.

A big thank you to lucy Wrigglesworth, Prep after school sport coordinator, for organising this new sport option for Prep students. Just a reminder that Term 3 bookings will be open from next Monday and families will have a week to sign their children up! Please head to the Prep School Pulse page for all Prep after school sport details.

Prep Students Letting their Light Shine

On Wednesday afternoon a group of Redlands students brought some happiness and joy to the residents at Landsdowne Gardens. Students from across multiple grades played and sang songs that provided an opportunity for sing-a-longs and for reflecting on earlier times. We are very proud of our Redlands students who demonstrated how they can let their light shine. A big thank you to the Redlands families who organised this very special event.

“The concert at Landsdowne Gardens was a huge success. Around 20 Redlands kids performed lots of things including singing and dance, piano, flute, piccolo, violin, cello and guitar. I played piano and did singing. I felt very nervous at first but in the end it all worked out well. The elderly audience thoroughly enjoyed the show!”

Secondary Sport

It was great to see so much Pink last weekend across all the venues, the Redlands Community and spirit within was great to see as I ventured from Football and AFL on Friday evening to Netball and Rugby on Saturday. A huge thank you to the Friends of Groups for their contributions across the weekend, and also to the many volunteers who assisted baking or selling prior to or on the day.

Last week we heard from Jordy Parsonage as to what sport meant to her growing up, this week we hear from Kate Seebohm. Kate has been a member of the Redlands community for just over six years, working across numerous programs and coaching the Girls 1st Basketball team for a number of years. Kate has a long family history with Basketball, she has travelled overseas and has been part of a college basketball system, so if you are interested in heading to College in America, I would suggest speaking with her!

What sport was to me growing up? – Kate Seebohm

Growing up in a small country town in South Australia, sport was a huge part of the community. My family was heavily involved in the local basketball association and from a young age I was dragged along to basketball tournaments across the state to watch my dad coach and my older brother play, and eventually started playing myself. Looking back these were some of my fondest family memories growing up as we were able to spend so much valuable time together and basketball provided a positive environment for us to connect through a shared passion.

When I think about my personal values, many of them have been learnt through sport including discipline, hard work and perseverance. Sport has taught me about the importance of teamwork and communication. The bonds formed with teammates through victory, defeat and hours of practice have given me lifelong friendships. In addition, sport has taught me a lot about generosity. I have been extremely fortunate from a young age to have so many volunteer coaches who would give up their time to help me be successful. These coaching mentors are the primary reason that I started coaching as I have always felt it is important to pay it forward and do my best to provide the support and guidance to young people in the way my coaches have for me.

I was extremely fortunate growing up to be involved in teams that allowed me to travel across Australia and overseas to play basketball. I was lucky to have the opportunity to attend College in the US with a basketball scholarship which provided me with one of the best experiences of my life and something I never would have had the opportunity to do without sport. I now have friends that I would consider family all over the world and am so grateful for everything that sport has given me.

‘When you can’t control what’s happening, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what’s happening. That is where the power is.’

Balmoral Burn

On Sunday 28 May, Redlands had three teams participate in the challenging Balmoral Burn, which involved running up one of Sydney’s steepest streets, Awaba Street, which has a 420-metre incline. In addition to students running in the Balmoral Burn, students in each team were asked to fundraise much needed funds towards the Humpty Dumpty foundation, which provides medical care and equipment to sick kids in hospital. Amongst the three Redlands teams, they raised a total of $1400, which was a fantastic effort.

The teams consisted of the following runners:

Team 1 – Girls

Mel Franco
Amynta Field
Sarah Yates
Natalie Bain
Reserve: Annabelle Hwang

Team 1 – Boys

Isaac Brooks
Connor Petersen
Hamish Campbell
Flynn Kieran

Team 2 – Boys

Mackenzie Willis
Tobe Cornelius
Rowan Petersen

Overall, our Redlands Senior boys team finished in 4th   place and Senior Girls team finished in 9th  place. Redlands also had the 5th fastest time on the day out of 23 schools.

This report is written by Maddie d’Almeida for Cross Country Note Day.

Last Wednesday on 24 May, our Secondary School students, accompanied by Mr Walker, Miss Carol and Mr Ellis, attended the ISA Cross Country Carnival at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Despite the harsh hilly course, the day was fun and exciting with lots of great achievements. It was great to see other Redlands runners cheer and compete against a large field of competitors and run their best.

A reminder that students who are using the gym, must change into their school uniform prior to Period 1 classes. Students who do not follow the Fitness Centre rules and requirements or the direction of the staff will be asked to leave the gym.

Football

Pink Sock Round was a fantastic round of Redlands Football. Friday night Football under lights was a fantastic experience for our 1st Boys and 1st Girls. With a large number of supporters out from across the school there was a great vibe at Macquarie on Friday night in support of such a fantastic cause to raise funds and awareness for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. This continued into Saturday, with the majority of teams playing at Macquarie University across Football & Rugby there was a great atmosphere and some very positive results for both our boys and girls Football programs. Congratulations to the students who have been named in the team of the week for Round 5!

A big congratulations to the following students who represented ISA at the NSWCIS Football Championships earlier this week: Jasmine Black, Madison Barwise, Hugo McKay, Keian Murphy, Jaiden Murphy and Liam McFarlane. A further congratulations to Jasmine Black and Hugo McKay who were selected into the NSWCIS Football teams and to Keian Murphy who was selected as a shadow. Best of luck to these students when they compete for the CIS team later this year.

Hockey

Pink Sock Day was a great success for our Hockey community. Our 1st Girls were up against Barker 2 for the first game of the day and they came out with a point to prove. Coming off the back of a tough loss the week before, our 1st Girls were almost at full strength again and came out firing from the early stages of the game. The team finished with a huge 15-0 win. The Junior A Girls were up next against SACS and proved themselves to be deserving of the top of the table position again this week. The team finished with a 6-0 win after a fantastic team effort. A big thank you to the Friends of Hockey for their efforts in collecting donations on Saturday for such a fantastic cause in supporting the Breast Cancer Network Australia!

Netball

It has been a very busy start to the season for Netball. Our participation numbers this year are higher than they have ever. This has been very rewarding for me to see, with 18 teams competing in the ISA competition.

Many teams have travelled out of Sydney for their games over the last few weeks. I am sure you will agree this travel time builds friendships and connects teammates and coaches and is a time that should provide wonderful memories for the girls throughout their school years.

We are halfway through the season now, some teams have had continuous tough games with many losses but these games build much resilience and push coaches and players to dig deep and keep going. This resilience breeds strength and growth in young people not just for their sporting life but beyond that too. I applaud these teams for their hardwork and patience as they wait for a win. In particular our Senior 4 and our Junior E team have made some recent break throughs. As Vincent Lomabardi wrote, “winners never quit and quitters never win.”

Thank you to our hard-working coaches who support the girls week in and out, ask for help with programming and put 100% into the girls.

To further motivate our netballers, as we push through the last half of the season, we will be starting our “top trainers” this week and we will list them here. These are the girls who put their best foot forward at training, are on time, work hard and have a positive focus at training.

Lets go Redlands!

Georgina Ford

Director of Coaching Netball

Rugby

With a season focus of “Good players, better people” our Rugby boys stuck true to their program identity. During Pink Sock Round, our Opens Boys were core supporters in Friday night’s matches, and again across all age groups on Saturday, displaying true Redlands spirit.

Our on-field performance across all age groups showed vast improvement with close games against Oxley throughout the day. A special mention to our opens team, Redlands 1sts who secured a fantastic 1 point victory over Oxley, who had until the weekend been undefeated this season.

Thank you to the wider Redlands community who supported our Rugby fixtures over the weekend, and all parents who volunteered their time and supported the Pink Sock festivities.

Players of the week as nominated by coaches:

  • 13s: Felix Eade
  • 14s: Rupert Perry

Pink Sock Fundraiser Performances

The day was the initiative of our School Captains and the Rock Bands added greatly to the event with their fantastic music! Thanks to our Head and Small Ensembles, Mr Montz and our Assistant Head of Small Ensembles, Mr Wooltorton, and to all our wonderful Rock Band mentors who support these aspiring performers each week. Well done students!

Spotlight on…Chamber Music in the Junior School

We are fortunate to have a thriving Chamber Music program at Redlands on both campuses. On the Junior Campus, the Vivaldi Chamber Ensemble performed for visitors to the recent Open Day, and this week, the Mozart Chamber Ensemble wowed the Junior School with a performance during the whole school assembly. Performing Allegro from Vivaldi’s Autumn, the group demonstrated excellent musicality and ensemble playing, performing without a conductor. Congratulations to our Junior School Chamber musicians and we look forward to your upcoming performances in the Junior Music Festival.

“On Monday night, the Senior Theatresports Team and I competed at the inter-school Theatresports competition for the semi-final round. This competition required student-led teams from across Sydney to compete in four rounds of Theatresports games, where we were judged on the entertainment, narrative, and the structural value of our improvised performances. Hallie, Sholto, Phoebe and I were able to bind together and perform the strongest we ever have, with the highlight of the night being our Round 4 Broadway Musical performance where we scored 15/15! This helped us place 2nd overall, and meant we were the first Redlands team, since 2018, to progress to the Grand Final round of the competition! I am so immensely proud of our team for continuing to remain optimistic, enthusiastic and passionate throughout each moment during the competition – irrespective of how we felt the scene was going, or how well we scored. I truly felt that being part of a group dynamic as such, was more of a privilege than our resulting place in the competition.” (By Claudia Lalich, Theatre Captain).

Yr 11 and 12 IB Theatre Workshops – Commedia

“Last week, the Year 11 and 12 IB theatre classes had the privilege of attending a Commedia Dell’arte workshop by Dr Chiara as part of our world theatre study. In this three-hour workshop, we not only learned about the detailed history of commedia and its stock characters, but also the movement styles, training techniques and the iconic masks. Commedia Dell’arte originated in Italy in the 16th century and had a large emphasis on physical theatre and the actors using their body to create stories. Commedia utilises improvisation constructed within a framework of stock situations, masks, audience interaction and stock characters to parallel the social hierarchy at the time and create comedy. We learnt that since the commedia hierarchy reflected the European social hierarchy of the time, characters like the Zannis, the servants, who were the lowest class, would have a low stance and hunched back due to their laborious jobs of farm work and heavy lifting, and their main objective would be obtaining food. During our session, we learned about all these stock characters and the different masks they use, along with the unusual body movements, walks, and stances, like Zannis low stance, hunched back. I highly recommend watching one of Dr Chiara’s videos online, as she is knowledgeable and engaging, to understand the complexity of this theatre style and the work that goes into physically creating all the characters.” By Eva Osborn, Yr 11 IB Theatre Student
