Redlands Learning Hub – Celebrating Three Years Since its Opening

I still recall very clearly that first morning – it was Monday 25 May, a bit windy and the campus was quiet waiting for students to return from six weeks of remote learning. We had our hands full with the installation of the balloon arch in front of the entrance to the Innovative Design and Visual Arts level (Level 1) and school captains Izzy and James were waiting with huge excitement to welcome students back to this brand new facility. To celebrate this three year milestone and acknowledge this incredible effort of many members of our community, I asked faculty at each level to share with me their reflections.

I share this reflection with Carty Haverhals, Redlands Sustainability Coordinator:

The Learning Hub Roof Top Garden is an outdoor classroom, a living laboratory, and a community space that brings together students, teachers, and staff in a collective endeavour to create a more sustainable and resilient future. It provides a space for hands-on, experiential learning. The Learning Hub rooftop has been transformed into a vibrant and sustainable learning space for the students in the Gardening Club. With the guidance of ethnobotanist David Harrington and the dedicated efforts of the Sustainability Team, the rooftop has become a prime example of integrating education for sustainability while supporting the fragile environment. It is now adorned with a variety of flowering plants, carefully selected to attract biodiversity.

Students are learning about botany, ecology, and sustainability but also about the value of collaboration and teamwork, as the success of the garden is dependent on the collective efforts of all involved. By involving the broader school community, such as the Canteen staff in using harvested crops and the Sustainability department in the planning and maintenance, the Roof Top Garden also helps instil a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment in all involved.

A sincere thank you to all Redlands families and friends who supported this wonderful project.
