Issue 15 2023 Term 2 Week 5 - 25 May 2023

From The Principal

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the NSW Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia conference where we heard from Ben Roche, the Vice President of Engagement at Southern Cross University in Lismore, who shared how the University responded to the Norther River Floods last year and how they have continued to be a vital contributor to that region’s ongoing recovery.

At the core of this moving and inspirational reflection was the notion that institutions such as universities and schools should always lead with values and that character and community should be at the heart of what we do. I am sure many parents would not be surprised from my communications this year, that these messages resonated strongly with me and align with much of my focus for Redlands this year.

Pleasingly, upon my return to school this week, I have witnessed our focus on values, character and community shining brightly at the School. At Tuesday’s Secondary School assembly, we heard from Year 10 and 11 students who recently returned from their homeland cultural immersion experience on Yolngu country in Northeast Arnhem Land as they shared their reflections and learnings to help frame Reconciliation Week next week. We also heard Year 10 student Jesse Forrest encourage the students in attendance to sign up for the ‘Push for Better’ Push-Up Challenge over the month of June to raise money and awareness for mental health.

On Friday at lunchtime on the Junior Campus, our older Junior School students will be joining with our younger Junior School and Prep School students for our Buddy Picnic where students from different Year Groups will be able to connect, reflect and share together. On the Senior Campus at lunchtime, our student leaders will be hosting the ‘Festival in the Fahl’, with food, music and games to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.

Then on Friday night and Saturday, the Secondary School will be hosting the Redlands Charity ‘Pink Sock’ Round of fixtures, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Network of Australia.

It is heart-warming to know that this focus on values, character and community is already an entrenched and living part of our culture here at Redlands and continues to grow and flourish through these and many other activities and events.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome more than 200 parents, grandparents, students and carers onto the Senior Campus early this week for our Secondary School Open Morning. Students from Year 9, supported by our leadership team, hosted small group tours answering questions and providing a wonderful insight into life at Redlands for our guests. Tomorrow, our Year 6 families will be exploring our Senior Campus as they begin their transition to Secondary School. Redlands reputation as a leading school of choice for families both nationally and internationally continues to grow through our focus on each individual student, exceptional teachers and world-class learning programs and resources.

We were also delighted to host our Year 9 parents, carers and students on Tuesday night for the ‘Experience to Extend’ information session hosted by our Secondary School leadership team. This important session explored foundations of success, along with the challenges and expectations held, within the diverse range of opportunities available to this cohort of students as the finalise their preparations for travel to Arnhem Land this weekend. Our Year 9 students, and accompanying staff, will be camping at the Gulkula site, a short drive from Gove airport and the regional hub of Nhulunbuy. Gulkula is a significant Gumatj ceremonial site widely accepted by all clans as a meeting place. Our travelling party are in for a truly remarkably and enlightening experience.

Our motto, ‘Let your light shine’, is a phrase taken from The Sermon on the Mount, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16 NIV). At Redlands we aim to provide extensive opportunities to enable each student’s light to shine and to foster the light in those around them, and those who need support. The Redlands Parent Prayer Group will gather on Monday 29 May from 7 to 9pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peters Cremorne. This meeting provides the opportunity for us to come together in prayer for our school community.

Tickets are selling fast for the highly anticipated Redlands Gala Ball. We are delighted to announce that Soul Shack, one of Sydney’s most in demand musical groups, will be dazzling us with their musical repertoire on the night. All proceeds from this gala fundraising event will benefit the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship Appeal. For more information on tickets and sponsorship of this uniquely Redlands event please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands Learning Hub – Celebrating Three Years Since its Opening

I still recall very clearly that first morning – it was Monday 25 May, a bit windy and the campus was quiet waiting for students to return from six weeks of remote learning. We had our hands full with the installation of the balloon arch in front of the entrance to the Innovative Design and Visual Arts level (Level 1) and school captains Izzy and James were waiting with huge excitement to welcome students back to this brand new facility. To celebrate this three year milestone and acknowledge this incredible effort of many members of our community, I asked faculty at each level to share with me their reflections.

I share this reflection with Carty Haverhals, Redlands Sustainability Coordinator:

The Learning Hub Roof Top Garden is an outdoor classroom, a living laboratory, and a community space that brings together students, teachers, and staff in a collective endeavour to create a more sustainable and resilient future. It provides a space for hands-on, experiential learning. The Learning Hub rooftop has been transformed into a vibrant and sustainable learning space for the students in the Gardening Club. With the guidance of ethnobotanist David Harrington and the dedicated efforts of the Sustainability Team, the rooftop has become a prime example of integrating education for sustainability while supporting the fragile environment. It is now adorned with a variety of flowering plants, carefully selected to attract biodiversity.

Students are learning about botany, ecology, and sustainability but also about the value of collaboration and teamwork, as the success of the garden is dependent on the collective efforts of all involved. By involving the broader school community, such as the Canteen staff in using harvested crops and the Sustainability department in the planning and maintenance, the Roof Top Garden also helps instil a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment in all involved.

A sincere thank you to all Redlands families and friends who supported this wonderful project.

Article: Managing Yr 12: 5 Tips For Managing The Burden of Expectation.

With many HSC and IB students receiving results from the Half Yearly Assessments, along with feedback from teachers, and more assessment deadlines, now is a timely reminder to remind Yr 12 that sometimes, the expectations that they are placing on themselves, are too high, and that it’s ok, to take a moment to pause, reflect and be content, that what they are doing is enough, and that Yr 12 is an important year, but at the same time, such a small piece of a much bigger picture in their life.
Student, Katelyn Smith completed her QCE studies in 2020 with an ATAR of 98.40, and now studies a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) at UQ.

In the following article, find Katelyn’s 5 top tips for managing Yr 12 which include:

Tip #1 Practise self-compassion

Tip #2 Foster a resilient mindset
Tip #3 Reduce stress
Tip #4 Learn for the sake of learning
Tip #5 Don’t let school devour your life

Stepping up into Leadership

This week, Yr 11 engaged in a Tutor session presented to them by our Dean of Students, Mrs Marita Jansons, about the leadership process. This process begins with self-nomination for captain positions, including a new opportunity as Captain of Wellbeing. Students are encouraged to carefully consider their personality, their areas of interests, their passions, their commitments, their time and their reasons for nominating for a position. Students were able to hear from current captains about their journey through the leadership process and their advice was extremely helpful for the cohort. Above all, their advice was to come together as a cohort, to support one another and to encourage one another throughout this process. They shared that there will always be surprises, excitement and disappointment. For the current Yr 12 cohort, they found it invaluable to be understanding of one another throughout the process and for those who do achieve captain positions, to get to know one another, understand what each person brings to the team and to work as a team.

Today was an introduction. Further information about the leadership process will be shared with students in the coming days.

Day of Artificial Intelligence

Last week, several Yr 11 students volunteered to join Mrs Argiro Anagnostu and students in the Junior School to engage in the Inaugural RC Redlands Interschool Day of AI Australia Challenge for the first time, part of further developing a Culture of Innovation at Redlands. Mrs Anagnostu shared that the Yr 11 students were instrumental in supporting the running of a 1 hour hands-on with AI activity, as part of the five-hour event, with 124 Year 5 and Year 6 students from 6 different schools. Yr 11 were engaged, committed and professional in their communication throughout the process in preparing for their participation in the event and simply outstanding on the day.

The Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn is an annual community fun run held on the last weekend of May. Every year, participants ‘take to the Burn’ to conquer Awaba Street’s 420-metre incline – one of the steepest streets in Sydney. Event creator, Phil Kearns AM, came up with the idea of running up Awaba Street as a thank you to the Royal North Shore Hospital after his son Finn received emergency care for suspected meningococcal. Now in its 21st year, the Balmoral Burn provides an ongoing opportunity for Humpty supporters to empower hospitals and health services Australia-wide. Every dollar raised has a positive impact on the work Humpty is doing to help sick kids in hospitals.

This year, Redlands has three teams participating in Balmoral Burn to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. The goal is for each team to raise at least $250.00 with a goal of $1500.00 total for the fundraiser.

Our very own Year 11 students, Isaac Brooks, Flynn Kieran, Conor Peterson and Hamish Campbell, will be participating in this year’s Balmoral Burn. To support Isaac, Flynn, Conor and Hamish, donations, can be made via the following fundraising page.

Your support for Isaac, Flynn, Conor and Hamish, in their efforts to conquer Awaba St, and raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty foundation, is greatly appreciated

Festival in the Fahl

Festival in the Fahl will be held this Friday 26th May, raising money for breast cancer research.

There will be a sausage sizzle, bake sale, games and music on the Fahl at lunch time, so students are encouraged to bring some money (gold coins and cash preferred) to participate. Students are encouraged to wear a splash of pink with their regular uniform on Friday.

Calling all passionate bakers! We would love students to contribute to the bake sale and this worthy cause:

  • Pink-themed if possible
  • No nuts
  • List your ingredients on the container
  • Drop off to the staffroom on Level 2 of Liggins before school on Friday

Senior Pathways and Subject Expo

Celebrating our Performing Arts students

Exciting news from our Drama department!

Shakespeare Carnival

Our Yr 10 Drama Curriculum students proudly represented Redlands at the Shakespeare Carnival Regional Competition last week. Both groups delivered outstanding performances with remarkable conviction. The competition encompassed private, public, and performing arts schools. We would like to give special recognition to our Group Ensemble scene, which achieved the impressive title of Runners Up/Highly Commended! Here are the details of the talented students and their dedicated Drama teachers who made this achievement possible:

  • Shakespeare Group Ensemble Performance: Megan Kirkpatrick, Serafina Scotting, Remie Gibbs (Yr 10), and their Drama Teacher, Ms. Samantha Novis. These students performed a scene from The Tempest.
  • Shakespeare Duologue: Krishna Gupta and Grace Dawson-Damer (Yr 10), alongside their Drama Teacher, Ms. Stacey Whitmore. This was a performance from Macbeth.

We extend our gratitude to Ms Stacey Whitmore and Ms Samantha Novis, the Drama teachers, for their exceptional preparation and guidance in preparing our students for the Carnival. Their efforts truly made a difference.

Intermediate Theatresports

The Yr 9 and 10 Theatresports team from Redlands participated in the Regional Competition on 18 May for Theatresports Australia Improvisation, All Schools Challenge. They secured an impressive Second place overall, earning them a spot in the Semi Finals. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Intermediate Team consisting of Remie Gibbs (Yr 10), Byron Kendrigan (Yr 9), Serafina Scotting (Yr 10), Abbie Sewell (Yr 10), and Juliet Treloar (Yr 10). We would also like to express our gratitude to their dedicated Theatresports teachers, Sarah Sparkes and Amber Virtue, for their exceptional training and guidance in preparing our students for this event.

Yr 10 Pathways Experience – Student Subject Selection Panel of Yr 12

Last Friday, a selected group of our Yr 12 HSC & IB students generously dedicated their time to share their experiences and insights on senior studies with the Yr 10 cohort. Their thoughtful participation truly exemplified the qualities of effective senior students. The Q&A session proved to be extremely valuable, as Yr 10 gained firsthand knowledge about the challenges and rewards of senior studies. The senior students’ generosity and willingness to contribute their wisdom will most certainly help Yr 10 make informed choices about their academic paths. Each Yr 12 student introduced themselves covering:

  • What they are studying – pathway and subjects
  • What they enjoy about this course/study
  • How they chose this course
  • Advice they would give themselves if could go back to Y10 subject selection time

Further to this, a Q&A session saw many types of questions asked of our seniors:

  • Thinking back to Yr 10 – did you have a clear idea then of what careers you were interested in? Did it change a lot over years 10, 11, 12?
  • What research did you do to find out about courses?
  • Do your subject choices matter for the course you want to study next year?
  • Is anyone planning to apply to university overseas? What is influencing your decisions?
  • How did you find the transition from Yr 10 to HSC/IB?
  • What should Yr 10 be concerned with/worried about?
  • If you could go back and give your younger self some advice, what would be?

TEDxSydney Youth – Future Creators

The world eagerly awaits to be redefined by the most interconnected, creative, and technically literate generation yet. The youth of today possess the most substantial, daring, eccentric, brave, inspirational, and brilliant ideas on how to reshape, rewire, inhabit, and reimagine our world. On 24 May, a small group of Yr 9 & 10 students were involved in TEDxSydney Youth, centred on the theme of “Future Creators”. It is important to recognise that the young generation is not merely inheriting the future; rather, they are actively creating it. Through their exceptional ideas, ability to connect with others, and a deep understanding of how these ideas spread, they are reshaping the world as we know it. It was an engaging and thought-provoking experience for all who attend.

Building Blocks for Success – Parent and Student Information Evening

Next Thursday on 1 June, our Head of Secondary School, Ms Gemma Van de Peer and Dean of Studies, Ms Anna Rolon, will hold an information evening between 6pm and 7pm to provide an outline of expectations and future directions for the Yr 8 cohort. Valuable information about assessment, support and self-management skills will be addressed as part of the presentation. Parents and their students are expected to attend.

Student Focus – Yr 8 Dance

Over the weekend, Yr 8 dancers had some incredible achievements.

At the ‘IRBD Dance Competition’ on Saturday, Juliet Whelan, Belle Monty, Amelie Dewar, Liliana Halfen, Izzy Bannon, Lucy Goodsall, Charlotte Algar and Mia Cruttenden performed in the Senior Jazz Performance Group. George Dover supported them by watching them compete. They did very well with their routine, and made the academy very proud.

On Sunday, Juliet Whelan, Abbie Korbel, Amarlie Wilson and Evie Krallis competed at Space Dance Eisteddfod, where they received 1st place for their ballet group. They have been working really hard with this routine, so it was a really incredible achievement.

The Power of Practice

With reports and student-led conferences coming, quite often we get feedback about the need for more practice. While the nature of practice will look different on a subject-by-subject basis, the principal benefits are the same.

This is a nice little two-minute read on how consistency of routine with regards to homework and study breeds long term benefits.

Week 5 – Assessments to the Left of us, Assessments to the Right

It has been a busy few weeks for Yr 7. PDHPE and VA assessments were due in Week 4 and this week Mathematics and HSIE tasks were completed. Students have been working hard to stay on top of home learning and assessment work, and they are really starting to recognise the importance of planning ahead to be best prepared for their academic commitments.

Yr 7O know their Art

Last Friday, I visited core class 7O as they completed their Art assignments. It was fantastic to see the focus and diligence of students as they finalised this task in preparation for submission. And there were some wonderful pieces on display.

Preparing for Heritage Week:

On Friday, we also had a keen group of students preparing for presentations to the cohort for Heritage Week in Week 7. Several of our students, Liv, Aaron, Lachlan, Olivia, Mack, Kate and Eddie volunteered to be involved in recounting to the cohort the history of the school and how it has developed over the past century. Our resident archivist, Ms Gillezeau, has provided students with a wealth of primary material to help students develop their presentations. This is all in the lead-up to Friday’s Foundation Day, where the School’s history will be further celebrated. I am really looking forward to what students are able to present.

Year Assembly

On Monday we held a Year Assembly where Sarah shared stories of her recent efforts competing in a Byron Bay Triathlon, where she came fifth overall, but was the top junior female contender. It was great to hear of her resilience in pushing through a tough race and we congratulate her on her efforts.

Given our focus this term on respectful relationships, we also finished our assembly with some prompting questions designed to get students connecting with others they might not always talk to. From sharing their thoughts on ‘given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?’ all the way to ‘if you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?’, students shared their thoughts with peers and each learned a bit more about the other.

Growth Conversations

In Tutor this week and last, students have been engaging in valuable ‘growth conversations’. These one-to-one chats are designed to prompt students towards reflecting on their past school efforts, challenges and successes, with a view towards achieving continued positive development as they move through the year. Students have found these conversations to be a great source of guidance and advice, and our Tutors have offered excellent support to students in this space.

Student Planners

Students are becoming significantly better at using their student planners to plan for assessments and home learning, and to set themselves goals for the weeks and terms ahead. A quick reminder that tomorrow is our Week A Peer Support Day, and this means that student planners will be checked for parent / carer signatures. Please make sure student planners have been signed at home!

Festival in the Fahl

A wonderful initiative, the ‘Festival in the Fahl’ will be held tomorrow (26/5), raising money for breast cancer research.

There will be a sausage sizzle, bake sale, games and music on the Fahl Garden at lunchtime, so Yr 7 are encouraged to bring some money (gold coins and cash preferred) to participate. Yr 7 are able to wear a small splash of pink with their regular uniform tomorrow in support of the event.

Student Congratulations

To many of our Yr 7 Dancers who had some great achievements last weekend. At the IRBD Dance Competition last Saturday, Ada Grossman, Adabelle Lee, Zoe Murdoch, Emma Foley, Astrid Vincent, Ariella Wold, Phoebe Sun, Freya Carroll and Anabelle Kendrigan performed in the Senior Jazz Performance Group. They did very well with the routine and made the academy very proud.

On Sunday, Adabelle Lee and Juliet Cooke competed at Space Dance Eisteddfod, where they received 1st place for their ballet group. They have been working really hard with this routine, so it was a really incredible achievement for them.

On Tuesday, Aaron Oh competed at the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition. He delivered a compelling prepared six minute speech on ‘A Change Worth Making’, and later followed this with an impromptu three minute speech on peer pressure. While he did not win the competition, Aaron was the youngest amongst the finalists and he performed extremely well, and learned a great deal from the experience. I am sure Aaron has a strong public speaking future ahead of him.

Balmoral Burn – Humpty Dumpty Fundraiser

The Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn is an annual community fun run held on the last weekend of May. Every year, participants ‘take to the Burn’ to conquer Awaba Street’s 420-metre incline – one of the steepest streets in Sydney. Event creator, Phil Kearns AM, came up with the idea of running up Awaba Street as a thank you to the Royal North Shore Hospital after his son Finn received emergency care for suspected meningococcal. This year, Redlands has three teams participating in Balmoral Burn to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. The goal is for each team to raise at least $250.00 with a goal of $1500.00 total for the fundraiser.

Our very own Yr 7 student, Natalie Bain, will now be participating in this year’s Balmoral Burn (after an unfortunate injury for Liv Law). To support Natalie, donations, can be made via the following fundraising page.

Your support for Natalie, in her efforts to conquer Awaba St, and raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty foundation is greatly appreciated.

Wear A Splash of Pink – Friday 26 May

We are looking forward to Junior School students wearing a ‘splash of pink’ tomorrow (Friday) In support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Across the school, we have a number of activities and ask our students to make a gold coin donation to the Foundation. We know that this is a poignant charity for so many people in our community and look forward to seeing a pink thread of colour across the campus next Friday.

Australia Interschool Day of Artificial Intelligence

Last week and aligned with our strategic focus on a Culture of Innovation, we hosted the inaugural Australia Interschool Day of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Yrs 5 and 6, the first year this international event has been made open to students in Australia.

With limited participants as a new imitative, we welcomed Loreto Kirribilli, St Aloysius’ College, St Luke’s Grammar, Neutral Bay Public School and Anzac Park Public School to Redlands for the day, which was an unmitigated success, coordinated expertly by Ms Anagnostu. The day involved a series of highly interactive learning designed to spark curiosity and ignite our future leaders, creators and innovators in the AI space and the collaboration and thinking between students (students from each school in every group) was inspiring. I also thank our Yr 11 student helpers and our broader IT team for their critical support to the success of the day and we are already looking at further opportunities to expand the program more widely across the Junior School.

Yr 7, 2024 Parent Transition Information Morning

I am looking forward to joining our Principal, Mr Corcoran, and the Head of Secondary School, Ms Gemma Van de Peer, in welcoming our current Yr 6 parents and carers to this important transition morning which will also encompass tours of our Senior Campus. Please note that this is a parent only event and there are different opportunities planned for the students through the rest of the year, which will be outlined.

HICES Cross-Country Carnival

As dawn broke on Tuesday morning, our Junior School Cross Country team set off for the HICES Carnival, held this year in Bathurst where the temperatures were decidedly cooler than Sydney.

I was grateful to receive some heart-warming feedback from parents who made the trip out to support the team on both the dedication and care of our accompanying sports staff and also the strong sense of school spirit amongst the 40 girls and boys from Yrs 2-6 who competed as a team and, as well as giving their very best in their respective runs, the students actively encouraged and supported each other no matter which age group they were in.

As one parent summarised, “It was such a pleasure to witness our Cross Country students interact across the different Year Groups and you can be proud they represented Redlands in the most impressive way.” Indeed, I am and we look forward to congratulating the team of runners who finished 2nd overall from a field of 11 schools from across NSW and from these races, 13 Redlands students have been selected to compete for HICES at the next level CIS state carnival next month.

Student Wellbeing Parent Presentation

We were delighted to welcome so many parents this week for our Term 2 Parent Tall on ‘Managing Big Emotions’, led by our counsellors, Mr Digiacomo and Mr Chen. The session was extremely well received and for families who attended or those who were not able to, we have placed the presentation slides on Pulse for your reference. If any questions do arise from looking at theses, please do reach out to our team at jscounselling@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Representative Sports Team Photos

Next Wednesday 31 May, our summer and winter representative team photos take place here at school. All students should be in their usual Redlands sport uniform of polo shirts and shorts for the photos. In addition, photos will be taken of our swimming and cross-country teams as well as individual representative players.

Student Health Matters

We are continuing to see students being sent into school unwell which is unfair on them as they do not have the cognitive capacity to learn well when they are sick and of course the wider implications of spreading illness to peers and staff. I trust that you will support our community’s health and wellbeing and we will continue to send students home if we see that they are unwell and contagious.

OOSH Information

Vacation Care bookings are now open and the clubs offered during the three week mid- year break have limited spaces. Families who are interested are asked to add their child(ren)’s names down here.

Prep Fun Run

A message from Ms Longworth

Last Friday was an amazing day as the sun shone down on the vibrant colours of the house flags, tents, and balloons, while posters lined the course for our Prep Fun Run. The excitement was palpable as students eagerly added house stickers to their PE uniforms in preparation for the run.

After enthusiastic war cries and a walk-through of the course, our students participated in the fun run event.  We extend our thanks and congratulations to all our outstanding Prep School students for their remarkable efforts. Their energy and determination were truly inspiring as they conquered the distance with enthusiasm and resilience!

The sense of camaraderie and support was fantastic, fostering a true sense of community within our school. It was wonderful to hear the chants and cheers of students supporting one another, uniting housemates, classmates, and friends across their Year Groups.

We would also like to express our gratitude to the parents who joined us to support all the runners. Your presence made the day even more special for the students. Thank you for getting involved with high-fives and war cries

AFL comes to the Afterschool Sport Program

AFL is our new sport joining the Prep program and our amazing new providers would love to show everyone a little bit about what they would do throughout the term. The goal for AFLKids is to help every player reach their full potential, whilst maintaining high levels of enjoyment for the game. All AFLKids Coaches are accredited and play a high standard of AFL in the Sydney Premier Division (Top Sydney league), VFL (league below AFL) or the AFLW (Top league for Womens). This invaluable experience allows the examination and development of players. By having young senior players coach juniors, we form important mentorships on and off the field.

On Wednesday 31 May we would like to welcome any Prep students to an AFL Open Day on the Junior Campus Oval. The Open Day will run from 3:30pm-4:15pm. Please pick your child up from their class first and then take them to the oval. If your child attends OOSH on this afternoon, they are to register for OOSH as normal and then they will be taken to the oval. They will be guided back to OOSH at the conclusion to the session.

Understanding Emotions: Helping Children to Navigate their Feelings

Thank you to all parents and carers who came to the ‘Understanding Emotions’ presentation on Tuesday. For those who missed the morning, you can find the slides to the presentation on the Preparatory School Pulse page. Below is a message from our counsellors outlining some key messages from the information session.

Parents can play a vital role in helping children understand and manage their emotions. By teaching them about the inner workings of their bodies during different emotional experiences, we can empower them to develop self-regulation skills. In this article, we will share some activities from The Big Hearts Project that can assist you in supporting your child’s emotional growth and well-being.

  1. Bunny Breathing: Imagine a little bunny in the garden, sniffing the air. Encourage your child to take three quick sniffs in through their nose, just like the bunny, and then exhale slowly and deeply through their mouth. This simple breathing exercise can help them regain control over their emotions when they are feeling overwhelmed.
  2. Exploring Anxiety and Self-Regulation: The Child Mind Institute has created an insightful series called ‘Nixie and Nimbo,’ which delves into topics such as anxiety and self-regulation. We recommend watching this clip together with your child. It serves as an excellent starting point for discussing anxiety and the ways we can regulate our emotions. By engaging in these conversations, you can create a safe space for your child to share their thoughts and concerns.
  3. Creating Emotional Binoculars: The students in The Big Hearts Project made binoculars out of toilet paper rolls and masking tape to help them investigate their emotions further. When you notice your child experiencing a particular emotion, you can ask them to use binoculars to explore what emotions, body sensations, and thoughts they observe.

By engaging in this activity, you demonstrate your interest in their emotional well-being and provide an opportunity for open communication. It also encourages them to be more mindful of their internal experiences, fostering self-awareness and self-regulation.

Jump Rope for Heart

We continue to participate in Jump Rope for Heart this year which is a fantastic physical activity program and fundraiser by the Heart Foundation.

Over the coming weeks your child will learn new skills, increase their physical activity, and learn about heart health. Before school, as well as during recess and lunch, the students will have time to practice, have fun and show off their new skipping skills to their friends. Ropes will be available in the playground for all students.

If you’d like to partake in the optional fundraising component, your efforts will go towards lifesaving heart research and support programs. When you register your child online, you’ll get access to additional skipping resources to help give your child a great reason to get away from the screens and get outdoors.

Thank you for getting involved in Jump Rope for Heart!

Fancy Socks or a Touch of Pink

26 May

May is breast cancer awareness month, and Redlands is helping support the Breast Cancer Network Australia charity. On 26 May, Prep School students are encouraged to bring in a gold coin donation and wear Fancy Socks or a Touch of Pink to participate in this school-wide effort.  For those looking to make a more substantial contribution, you can do so here:

Come and experience the Lucy Hill Library

8.30am Monday 29 May

We have had numerous parent requests for an information session about the wonders that lie within the fabulous Lucy Hill Library. If you would like to experience a ‘hands on’ tour, find out what research apps are useful for young learners and to find out how to make the most of family borrowing, please join Sharron Stokes in the Lucy Hill Library after drop off on Monday 29 May.

Winter Uniforms and Hats

Lost property is hitting an all-time high with unnamed pieces of clothing, lunchboxes and drink bottles. Please write your child’s name on everything! As we tell the children, it is not the job of the teachers, Mrs Hunt or Mrs Alfonso to chase after lost pieces of property or return things to children after break times.

The Redlands values, respect and responsibility have been a focus this term. We have talked extensively about how we treat each other and how we look after our things. It’s time now for our students to put their words into action.

A reminder that the K-2 bucket hat is to be worn daily in the playground. The cap is NOT part of the K-2 uniform. Staff will be asking students to remove a cap if they are wearing it and reminding them to wear their bucket hat only which does provide more sun coverage.

The cap is for Junior School only as per the Redlands uniform guidelines.

Staff Profile

Last week we heard from Locky Pryor about what sport meant to him growing up, this week we hear from Ms Jordy Parsonage. Jordy join the Redlands team back in 2019 coming on board as a Touch Football coach, throughout her time she has developed a strong rapport with the staff, students and wider Redlands Community. Jordy is now the Director of Touch Football & Rugby. Growing up Jordy was a leading athlete, part of the NSW Touch Football Pathway and also the Australian Rugby 7s program. Nowadays Jordy has many hats outside of Redlands, coaching the North Sydney Bears Tarsha Gale Cup (U19s), she was the Assistant Coach of the Mixed Australian U20s Touch Football team who recently won the Asian Cup, she also runs the Norths Bears Touch Football Association. We are extremely lucky and grateful to have someone of Jordy’s calibre at Redlands.

What sport was to me growing up? – Jordy Parsonage

I grew up with many frustrations around the limited options of sport I had available, I tried my hand in almost every sport available at school as I struggled to find ‘my thing’. I was lucky enough to encounter a few incredibly motivating coaches who challenged my way of thinking and encouraged me to chase sporting goals that I did not even believe pathways existed for. These coaches drove my interest to be a better athlete and human in general. “Good players, better people” quickly became a motto that I still carry with me today.

I’ve taken so many of my learnings in sport and applied these into other experiences in life. I credit my ability to face adverse situations to my resilience built through sport.

My pathway into touch footy and rugby opened up a world of possibilities for travel. I spent most of my Year 12 and early years at uni doing remote work while on Tours throughout Australia and across the world. The friendships I made through my teams/clubs are friendships that will last a lifetime. The pure enjoyment I have experienced through sport directed my career pathway and has resulted in me dedicating my life back to creating pathways for youth athletes so that they can find the positives in sport that I did.

As the queen Serena Williams once said, “It doesn’t matter what your background is or where you come from, if you have dreams and goals, that’s all that matters.”

Staff Achievements – Renae Garlepp (nee. Camino)

A huge congratulations to Redlands Director of Basketball Renae Garlepp who was announced as the Australian Opals Assistant Coach for the upcoming Asia Cup. This is an amazing opportunity for Renae and we look forward to seeing the Opals compete in the competition from June 26 – July 2

Football

It was a great round of Redlands Football in Round 4. Our Girls teams had some competitive games at Macquarie, while the majority of the Boys sides played against St Pius and finished with some fantastic results.  Congratulations to those who have been named in the team of the week for Round 4!

This Friday and Saturday we will be hosting the annual Redlands Pink Sock Charity Round, with the 1st Boys and 1st Girls playing under lights at Macquarie on Friday night, and the majority of our other teams playing at home on Saturday. Please purchase your pink socks from the uniform shop ahead of your game this weekend in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. We encourage students to arrive early or stay after their games to support this great cause and the other students within the Football program.

Hockey

In Round 4 our teams were up early on Saturday morning, travelling to Oxley College. It was a very tough game for the 1st Girls, with a number of students unavailable, the game proved to be a tough match-up. It was a very skilful game from both side, however, sadly the girls went down 7-2 but we scored one amazing goal with Heidi running the ball all the way from half way to into the circle, passing it straight to Carolina who tapped it in. Our second goal was from a stroke, to which Abbie did an amazing flick. Very tough game but it was a great competitive game of hockey despite the final score line. Players of the match were Heidi, Noush, and Iona.

The Junior Girls game was also a good game to watch, as both teams had good skill and technique. Emily scored a great goal by herself running it all the way to the circle. Our other goal was from Kate who did an amazing job connecting with Ava down the field. Players of the match were Amelia, Emily, and Kate.

Best of luck to our Hockey teams this Saturday in our annual Pink Sock Charity Round supporting Breast Cancer Network Australia. With both teams hosting at Barker College we encourage our students to support each other and this great cause!

NSW PSSA AFL Championships

Congratulations to Owen Beck on his involvement in these championships last week as part of the NSW CIS team which included thirteen teams across the state with the championships taking place over four days. As was to be expected Owen displayed strong leadership, ability and great sportsmanship, as well as representing Redlands by continually upholding the School’s values.

The CIS team put in an outstanding performance all week, and won 4 of their 6 games.  This team also secured the CIS 2024 team the coveted position in Pool A for next year’s Championships. Importantly to note his team were successful is making it to the Grand Final, losing to a very strong side from Riverina.

Owen was awarded “Players Player” for their second game, and kicked 1 of their 2 goals in that game. He was even awarded “mark of the day” from the commentators during the YouTube livestream. He was then given the honour of Team Captain for game 3. Lastly Owen was awarded the “Team Courage” award for his entire week‘s performance during the post Grand Final team presentation as he played through a fractured hand injury early in game 3.

“My favourite part of PSSA was making it to the Grand Final and ocean recovery swims with my team” – Owen Beck (Yr 6).

Please see the two photos below of this CIS team and Owen wearing his Silver Grand Final medal

HICES Team

Congratulations to our students who ran at the HICES Cross Country Championships on Tuesday. We had 40 students make up the 2023 Junior School team who left Sydney 6.30am for Scots All Saints in Bathurst and returned just past 7:00pm. We had 13 students qualify for the HCIES team that will now run at the CIS Championships in a few weeks. Not only did the team run well, they were a pleasure to take on the bus, were great ambassadors for the school and in between their own races they ran to different parts of the course to cheer on their teammates who were running at that time. We wish the following students the best of luck as they prepare for CIS Cross Country as part of the HICES team. Redlands as a school came 2nd place in this event, narrowly beaten by Central Coast Grammar.

Drama and Theatre

We are so proud of our exceptional Intermediate and Senior Theatresports teams – both have progressed to the Semi-Finals which is an outstanding accomplishment! We have now begun rehearsing for the Theatre category for Gala Arts, and we’re looking forward to sharing these performances with our audience soon at The Concourse, Chatswood, Week 1 Term 3. Our production students have been busy preparing for upcoming events and our Extra Subject Drama classes are continuing to create their works for their end of year performances.

Congratulations to our Theatresports Intermediate Team!

Our Yr 9 and 10 Theatresports team competed at the Regional Competition recently for the Theatresports Australia Improvisation, All Schools Challenge, and placed Second overall, progressing to the Semi Finals! We wish them well at the Semi-Finals, along with our Senior Theatresports Team.

Intermediate Team (Years 9 and 10)

Remie Gibbs (Yr 10), Byron Kendrigan (Yr 9), Serafina Scotting (Yr 10), Abbie Sewell (Yr 10), Juliet Treloar (Yr 10)

Thank you to their Theatresports teachers, Mrs Sarah Sparkes and Ms Amber Virtue for doing such a fantastic job in training our students for this event.

Secondary Production Crew – Friday Afternoons

After a busy, action-packed, and fun musical last term, the Senior Production Crew has been hard at work assisting with various Drama events in the school community. Two weeks ago, the Yr 12 IB drama students put on a phenomenal self-devised performance, with the assistance of a few of our Yr 12 crew members who managed the lighting, sound, and projection behind the scenes. In recent weeks, we have closely collaborated with the Yr 11 IB Drama classes, helping to design the lighting and program it into the Drama Studio lighting setup for their upcoming performance exams.

In the coming weeks, the crew will begin preparations for the backstage work at the upcoming Senior Music Festival, which will take place near the end of Term 2, and the Gala Arts event, scheduled right at the beginning of Term 3. We are excited to witness the incredible performances from all areas of the school community at these events! By Olivier Noakes (Production Captain)

Drama Student of the Week: Katie Budden

By Olivier Noakes (Production Captain)

Katie is an incredibly talented individual when it comes to everything behind the scenes, always eagerly volunteering for any task. She has been a dedicated member of the Production Crew for years, always looking to learn new skills, make new friends and help others. Everyone involved in Production and Drama wholeheartedly appreciates Katie’s positive energy and ongoing dedication to the Production program at Redlands!

Australian Composer Incursion (Yrs 11 & 12)

This Tuesday we were delighted to host Sydney Conservatorium Head of Composition Dr Daniel Rojas to work with our senior students. His dexterity as a Classical concert pianist and composer with diverse cultural influences provided an inspiring sounding board for our Year 12 composers.  His composition Baile y Fuego (‘Dance and fire’) is one of our set analytical works and this experience was insightful for all who attended.

Life Ready, Industry Ready

Last night members of the Senior Academic Music team were delighted to be invited to attend premiere performances of new Australian Composition works, presented by Redlands Alumni at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Aaron Drake and Eden Borrie (Class of 2022) were both among the seven students who were offered early entry to their Music courses last year, and as always we are thrilled to follow how the seeds planted in our Music program continue to flourish well beyond the Redlands gates.

Guests of the Mayor of North Sydney

On Friday, students in the Advanced String Ensemble performed at the North Sydney Council Chambers at the invitation of Mayor Zoe Baker. The event was an Australian Citizenship Ceremony, and it was a deeply moving experience to be part of this special day for over 60 new Australian citizens. We thank our students for their willingness to be part of this wonderful occasion.

Spotlight on Yr 5 Music Instrumental Program

Last week at the Yr 5 Music Instrumental Program (MIP) the students had the opportunity to rehearse as the Combined Band working on their ensemble skills under the expert leadership of our conductor Mr Xu (Assistant Head of Bands) to keep in time, watch for expression and dynamics. At Redlands we are priviliged to have this vehicle to outwork and apply our curriculum Music learnings, and it is evident that the students enjoyed playing alongside their peers and hearing the different sections of the band in the Combined session!
