Year 8

Paul Dillion Presentation and Vaping

Last week Redlands hosted Paul Dillion, the Director of the Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) who provided a number of different presentations to both students and parents. Aside from presenting some of the current research on behavior and consumption of drugs and alcohol with regards to young adults, he also provided a number of updates about vapes and vaping trends.

I have attached a factsheet from the DARTA website which provide some background information on e-cigarettes and vaping available HERE.

One of the key messages from Paul to parents is to be aware of the vapes that are packaged and marketed towards young people, such as those with ‘fruit juice’ flavours. He provided both a health warning, as these can include undisclosed nicotine, and a legal warning about sizable fines for the possession and consumption of these products.

Our school policy with regards to these issues is as follows – ‘Smoking or vaping, the possession or consumption of alcohol and other illegal substances (including e-cigarettes) are prohibited whilst in school uniform, on school grounds, or attending school function.’ This is in place to ensure the physical protection of our students and the long term health and wellbeing.

We highly recommended that if you were unable to attend the presentation that you examine some of the research linked above on the DARTA website.

Student Focus – Balmoral Burn – Humpty Dumpty Fundraiser

The Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn is an annual community fun run held on the last weekend of May. Every year, participants ‘take to the Burn’ to conquer Awaba Street’s 420-metre incline – one of the steepest streets in Sydney. Event creator, Phil Kearns AM, came up with the idea of running up Awaba Street as a thank you to the Royal North Shore Hospital after his son Finn received emergency care for suspected meningococcal. Now in its 21st year, the Balmoral Burn provides an ongoing opportunity for Humpty supporters to empower hospitals and health services Australia-wide. Every dollar raised has a positive impact on the work Humpty is doing to help sick kids in hospitals.

This year, Redlands has three teams participating in Balmoral Burn to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. The goal is for each team to raise at least $250.00 with a goal of $1500.00 total for the fundraiser.

Our very own Year 8 students, Melissa Franco and Finn Gurney, will be participating in this year’s Balmoral Burn. To support Melissa and Finn, donations, can be made via the following fundraising page.

Your support for Melissa and Finn, in their efforts to conquer Awaba St, and raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty foundation, is greatly appreciated.
