Issue 14 2023 Term 2 Week 4 - 18 May 2023

From the Principal

On Wednesday morning, I spent some time at the Junior School Cross Country Carnival and watched our Yr 3 girls and boys run the 2 kilometre course around St Leonard’s Park. Despite the wintry conditions, the students were cheerful, excited and supportive of one another throughout the morning.

I was particularly struck by the conversations I had with two students after they completed the race. The first proudly told me, “I didn’t know I could run that far!” while the second student, with the same tone of pride, remarked, “I didn’t know I could run that fast!”

These reflections are good reminders of the purpose and impact of our School’s philosophy in ensuring students develop a growth mindset both in and out of the classroom. At our Junior Campus Open Morning on Tuesday, Mrs Breckenridge explained how this focus on a growth mindset is regularly illustrated in the Prep School by teachers adding the powerful word “yet” to the end of students’ phrases when they remark that they can’t do something.

I have often talked about encouraging young people to step outside of their comfort zones because that it is where the “magic” happens, and believe that these two students, who stepped outside of their comfort zones on Wednesday, stretched themselves in new ways and returned back from school with a new sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Uniform Update

We are in the final stages of the redevelopment of our formal school uniform and our Uniform Committee (comprising student, parent, staff and Board representatives from across the School) is excited to see the new uniform taking shape. Developed by leading Australian designer Jonathan Ward, the new uniform has been designed with respect to the history of Redlands while reflecting the contemporary culture of our School. We are in the final stages of the uniform redevelopment process and are planning to have the final sign off by the Uniform Committee later this term.

Below are some of the key principles of our new uniform introduction:

  • It will be available from Term 1 2024, with a two-year transition period for current students who will have the choice of either wearing the current or new uniform until the end of Term 4 2025.
  • Only the formal school uniform is being developed, not the sports uniform, which will remain the same next year.
  • The uniform has been designed with a focus on value, cost, sustainability, gender neutral and easy care properties.
  • It is trans-seasonal, comprising a range of core and optional garments that can be worn year round, so students will no longer need a separate summer and winter uniform.
  • We are working with our uniform manufacturer to provide appropriate recycling solutions, including Worn Up, for the current uniform once it ceases to be available for use at the end of 2025.

We are very much looking forward to launching the new formal school uniform to our Redlands community in Term 3.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Photo Caption: Our Junior Campus warmly welcomed Redlands mums and carers to our Mother’s Day celebration on Monday morning. They enjoyed coffees and warm beverages, a special performance by our Prep students, as well as in-class activities in both our Prep School and Redlands House Preschool.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to welcome and celebrate our Redlands House, Preparatory and Junior School Mums and Carers on campus with coffee and classroom activities earlier this week. We also welcomed guests to our Junior Campus Open Morning on Tuesday where our Prep and Junior tour hosts did a magnificent job in guiding our guests through the Junior Campus, whilst openly sharing their experiences as a Redlands student and our talented musicians charmed all with their wonderful performances.  A common thread in my discussions with visiting parents and carers has been how impressive it is that our students are valued and known as individual learners and how they are challenged to develop and grow their unique passions and talents.

In National Volunteer Week, where Australia recognises the vital support that the millions of volunteers in our country provide to their communities, we acknowledge and thank the generous army of volunteers we are lucky to have here at Redlanders. The volunteers on our School Board, on Foundation Advisory and Sustainability Committees, Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs), Class and Year Group Parents and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. All of the important groups of committed and passionate volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities.

Tickets are now on sale for the high anticipated Redlands Gala Ball that includes a gourmet three course dinner and drinks, live entertainment and dancing, auctions and raffles. We are delighted to announce that Redlander Catriona Rowntree (RL 1989), host of Australia’s top TV travel show, Getaway, will be our MC on the night. All proceeds from this gala fundraising event will benefit the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship Appeal. For more information on tickets and sponsorship of this uniquely Redlands event please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

Congratulations to Team Redlands who participated in the annual Mother’s Day Classic in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation last Sunday.  They not only completed the course but hit their fundraising target that will contribute to funding life-saving research to improve breast cancer detection, the development of new treatments, and allow people with breast cancer to live longer and better lives.  Well done to all.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wed 24 May will be from Cammeray to Northbridge. Meet at Tunks Park, Brothers Ave, Cammeray at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

The Book Club meets twice each school term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

Our next meeting is Mon 19 Jun for morning tea. We will be discussing The Familiars by Stacey Hall. If you would like to host the meeting, or if you might be interested but have concerns about what’s involved, please contact Monica or Sabiha to have a chat.

Also, if you would be happy to host a meeting in the future but are just not available to do so in May/June, please let us know as well! We still have 4 more meetings in the second half of the year to organise!

Books planned for Term 3 are: The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and BABEL by R.F. Kuang.

Student Achievement

We know that students who are fully engaged – in their academic study, sporting pursuits, and a range of cocurricular activities – go on to achieve highly in the HSC and IB. The research shows that students engaged in up to four cocurricular activities learn more effectively and are more developed in their social and emotional capacity. This week we feature a range of students who are excelling at their job – the job of being a student!

Yr 11 student Jasmine Black is an incredible football player. When she entered Secondary School, she was a Yr 7 goal keeper, playing alongside Yr 12 students. She works hard for the sport she loves and in recent years she has been driving hours each week to join Sydney FC training and games across Sydney. Jasmine trains with the team as a “train on” for every training session and she gets contracted to play games throughout the season. At the start of May, Sydney FC won the Liberty A League Grand Final in front of a record crowd of 9,500 people. Jasmine’s skills as goal keeper have taken her through to this level and this is a huge moment of celebration and reflection for her. Congratulations Jasmine!

Yr 11 student Nathan Barrie joined Redlands this year and he is also an incredible football player. Nathan has been travelling long hours each week to join the Under 18s Western Sydney Wanderers practices and games. Recently, Nathan has been selected in the Australian U17s Subway Joeys Squad to train and compete in the upcoming Asian Cup in Thailand. Joey’s Head Coach, Brad Maloney, has named the extended 28 players for the squad to participate in a training camp in Bangkok, Thailand, which will then be reduced to 23 players ahead of the tournament. This tournament is meant to showcase the country’s “brightest young talent” against the “finest [players] in Asia.” The goal is to at least make it to the semi-finals to secure qualifications to this year’s FIFA Under 17s World Cup in November. This is an incredible achievement for Nathan and he is wished all the best in this upcoming tournament. Congratulations Nathan!

Yr 11 student Daisy Thomas travelled to Europe at the end of Term 1 to compete in a number of free ski competitions. Daisy has competed internationally throughout her skiing career and her recent was to stand on the podium for a Europa Cup and she achieved this goal, placing 3rd in the Big Air Competition in Corvatsch, Switzerland! She also placed 4th in the Slopestyle Competition. However, her highlight throughout this experience was winning the World Rookie Tour in Italy which gained her an invitation to The Nines, where some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world spend a week skiing in an eye-popping terrain park. For Daisy, there was nothing better than being able to spend time skiing with and getting to know some of her heroes. She managed to be the first Australian female to land a new trick there, the Double Cork 1080, which she was then nominated for Junior Athlete of the Year at Snow Australia! Congratulations to Daisy for her incredible accomplishments in skiing and we wish her the best as she prepares for the Junior World Championships in New Zealand in August.

Another Yr 11 student, Alissandra Braden, has just finished competing at the Sailing State Championships in Queensland. While Alissandra has had several opportunities at a high level of competition, including a World Competition in Portugal last year, she continues to improve her results and to push herself in competition, even beating her own coach at States! Alissandra was up against 47 people who competed on the same racecourse at the same time. Her fleet even included members from Australian Sailing Futures. Alissandra earned 2nd Female Overall, 1st in Under 17 Female, 2nd in Under 17 Overall and 7th Overall! Congratulations to Alissandra for this outstanding achievement!

Falling Forward

This week our School Captains Josie Simpson and Daniel Close bestowed two Fall Forward Awards to Yr 7 students.

Laura Huang competed at the National Championships of Synchronised Swimming in Perth. Her team did amazingly well and ended up coming third. We are so proud of this student and her amazing efforts – she is a well-deserved recipient of the Fall Forward Award.

Jason Gong travelled all the way to the United States to compete in an international robotics competition. He did so well, placing 25th overall and we are so so proud of his efforts. He is also well deserving of the Fall Forward Award.

Dramatic Success

Our Yr 11 and 12 Theatresports team competed at the Regional Competition this week for the Theatresports Australia Improvisation, All Schools Challenge, and placed Second overall, progressing to the Semi Finals. The students in the team are: Phoebe Barnett (Yr 12), Hallie Hunt (Yr 11), Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11). A hearty thank you to the Theatresports teachers, Sarah Sparke and Amber Virtue, for training our students for this event.

Our Yr 10 Drama Curriculum students represented Redlands at the Shakespeare Carnival Regional Competition this week. Both groups performed brilliantly with great conviction. Special mention must go to our Group Ensemble scene that placed Runners Up/Highly Commended! The Shakespeare Group Ensemble Performance was made up of the following students: Megan Kirkpatrick, Serafina Scotting, Remie Gibbs (Yr 10) and supported by Drama Teacher, Ms Samantha Novis. The Shakespeare Duologue was made up of the following students: Krishna Gupta and Grace Dawson-Damer (Yr 10) and supported by Drama Teacher, Ms Stacey Whitmore.

High Expectations for Behaviour and Adherence to Redlands Values

Inspiring young people to achieve life readiness and let their light shine requires a complex and multifaceted approach to supporting and challenging the young people in our care. As an educational institution we use all opportunities for didactic reflection, be they in the classroom setting, on the bus to Sport training or standing in line at the canteen. Whilst it can be challenging for a young person to receive feedback on their attitude or effort, this is how they improve and grow into the best versions of themselves. When students forget or disregard what is expected of them, in terms of living the Redlands values, they will be reminded of our expectations – and this may take a variety of forms: a conversation, a detention, a meeting with a Year Advisor and parents/carers, a behaviour support plan, a check-in with a school counsellor. Depending on the context and the student’s needs, they are afforded the opportunity to consider their choices and identify the support they need in order to ‘let their light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds…’.

We Value Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Fairness, Moral Courage

Bullying (of any sort), vaping (which is illegal for people under the age of 18) and behaviour which risks the safety of self or others, is not tolerated at Redlands. Behaviours, dissonant to our School values, will be challenged and students will be held accountable.

As parents and carers, we strongly encourage you to read through the School Rules, which are located on page 10 of the Student Planner, adjacent to the General Health and Safety Guidelines, the Anti-Bullying Guidelines, the ICT Responsible User Guidelines and the Secondary School Student Behaviour Management Process. Please regularly review your teenager’s use of the Student Planner and familiarise yourself with the various processes we use to support appropriate and positive student behaviour. We appreciate the support of parents and carers in this respect and the understanding that Redlands staff are professionals and experts in the holistic education of young people.

This week marks the national celebration of Volunteer Week. In our various Chapels, we expressed gratitude and prayers for the many in our community who volunteer in our local and broader community. As we continue to ‘let our lights shine’ may the example of the Lord Jesus be our guide – ‘it is better to give than receive’ (Acts 20:35).

All members of our community are welcome to join us for the Parent Prayer Meeting in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Cremorne on Monday 29 May from 7-9pm.

‘In Your Skin’ Respectful Relationship Workshop

On Friday last week, Yr 12 participated in the ‘In Your Skin’ Respectful Relationship workshops.

Below is a reflection on the workshop by Yr 12 student, Maia Healey:

“Initially, going into this exercise with a group of people in my cohort that don’t necessarily share much with each other- who now had to speak openly about sex related content and intimate relationships, did not hold very promising prospects for me, or many others of the group.  I was apprehensive of the views, beliefs, and level of respect we would be capable of holding for each other – especially considering the content we had to discuss. I was so happy to be pleasantly surprised by the genuine listening and respect every single person in my group had for each other, no matter if different views and opinions were shared.

Although there is still a lot we can work on to improve the understanding and respect necessary for relationships, the Year 12 workshop was a huge, encouraging step forward.

It was genuinely a really beneficial day to be part of, and I know that’s a view felt widely across many people from my group and the cohort.”

Maia Healey

The Yr 12 Give Back Service Day Schedule

As mentioned in the Yr 12 Formal Letter, prior to the Yr 12 Formal, Yr 12 will participate in a Give Back Day.

It has been confirmed that Naomi Escott from Rough Edges will speak to Yr 12, during Period 1 on Friday 23 June.

Rough Edges is a program, which is a registered charity, run by the St John’s Community Services. Since 1966,  the organisation has helped the homeless and marginalised community in Darlinghurst, creating a space where different communities come together, have a meal and connect with each other.

Rough Edges collaborate with a number of partner services to provide a more comprehensive solution for people experiencing homelessness and marginalization.

These services are all operated by St John’s Community Services:

A big thank you to our school Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Phillips for organising Rough Edges to come and speak with Yr 12.

From 10:10am to  12:30pm, Yr 12, will have the option of participating in the following service activities:

  • Performances and cooking at the Bougainvillea Retirement Village

  • French Speaking with the Elderly at the Neutral Bay Community Centre

  • Assisting the Redlands Maintenance Team with property management

  • Winter Woolies Winter Appeal Promotion, Collection, and Organising

  • Learning Activities with the Redlands House, Prep and Junior School

Once Yr 12 complete their Give Back service activity at 12:30 pm, they may leave to go home to get ready for the long-awaited Year 12 Formal at the Shangri-La which starts at 7 pm.

  • Active consent communication, including verbal and non-verbal cues
  • The complexities of assumed, implied, or inferred consent
  • The problem with consent as only an ‘enthusiastic yes’
  • Cultural consent cues associated with alcohol use and binge drinking
  • The impact of alcohol on perceptions of sexual interest, communication and gendered sexual scripts

The Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn is an annual community fun run held on the last weekend of May. Every year, participants ‘take to the Burn’ to conquer Awaba Street’s 420-metre incline – one of the steepest streets in Sydney. Event creator, Phil Kearns AM, came up with the idea of running up Awaba Street as a thank you to the Royal North Shore Hospital after his son Finn received emergency care for suspected meningococcal. Now in its 21st year, the Balmoral Burn provides an ongoing opportunity for Humpty supporters to empower hospitals and health services Australia-wide. Every dollar raised has a positive impact on the work Humpty is doing to help sick kids in hospitals.

This year, Redlands has three teams participating in Balmoral Burn to raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation. The goal is for each team to raise at least $250.00 with a goal of $1500.00 total for the fundraiser.

Our very own Year 11 students, Isaac Brooks, Flynn Kieran, Conor Peterson and Hamish Campbell, will be participating in this year’s Balmoral Burn. To support Isaac, Flynn, Conor and Hamish, donations, can be made via the following fundraising page.

Your support for Isaac, Flynn, Conor and Hamish, in their efforts to conquer Awaba St, and raise funds for the Humpty Dumpty foundation, is greatly appreciated.

Redlands Charity Round

On Friday 26 and Saturday 27 May (Term 2, Week 5) we will be hosting our Redlands Charity round. This year, we are raising funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia. This will be our Pink Sock round. There will be activations across all sports on both Friday evening and Saturday morning. It would be great to see many of you out supporting the students and the cause wearing a touch of pink. Check the Sport fixtures for a full set of games on those two days.

Theatresports

Our Year 11 and 12 Theatresports team competed at the Regional Competition this week for the Theatresports Australia Improvisation All Schools Challenge. The team placed second overall, progressing to the Semi Finals! The students in the team are: Phoebe Barnett (Yr 12), Hallie Hunt (Yr 11), Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11).

A thank you to their Theatresports teachers, Sarah Sparkes and Amber Virtue for doing such an excellent job in training our students for this event.

Redlands Open Day

This week, two Yr 11 students were asked to share their reflections on being a student at Redlands since Redlands House Preschool. Will Algar and Emma Noes spoke to members of the Redlands community and prospective families, beautifully highlighting their experience at the School and their personal growth throughout their time in school. Will and Emma were described as “confident and inspiring” and they ” spoke naturally and passionately.” Thank you to both students for their time and for being fantastic representatives of the school.

” It is within these walls that I have discovered my passions, explored my interests, and challenged myself to reach new heights.”  Emma Noes

” By getting involved, contributing and being part of a team, the School has helped me grow in confidence and as a person, allowing me to find rewarding personal interests and strengths. ” William Algar

Student Congratulations

Jasmine Black is an incredible football player. When she entered the Secondary School, she was a Yr 7 goal keeper, playing with Yr 12 students. She works hard for the sport she loves and in recent years she has been driving hours each week to join Sydney FC trainings and games across Sydney. Jasmine trains with the team as a “train on” every training session and she gets contracted to play games throughout the season. At the start of May, Sydney FC won the Liberty A League Grand Final in front of a record crowd of 9,500 people. Jasmine’s skills as goalkeeper have taken her through to this level and this is a huge moment of celebration and reflection for her. Congratulations Jasmine!

Nathan Barrie joined Redlands at the start of Yr 11 and he too has an incredible skill as a football player. Nathan has been traveling hours each week to join the Under 18s Western Sydney Wanderers practices and games. This tournament is meant to showcase the country’s “brightest young talent” against the “finest [players] in Asia.” The goal is to at least make it to the semi-finals to secure qualifications to this year’s FIFA under-17s World Cup in November. This is an incredible achievement for Nathan and he is wished all the best in this upcoming tournament. Congratulations Nathan!

Celebrating Yr 10’s Remarkable Exam Block Performance

Yr 10 are to be praised for their outstanding achievements during the recent exam block. Their remarkable commitment to preparation and planning for their subject assessments deserves special recognition, as it showcases their determination to reach academic excellence. Throughout the examination period, Yr 10 displayed a commendable level of focus and dedication, which undoubtedly will contribute to their success. Their proactive approach in organising their study materials and devising effective strategies highlights their maturity and eagerness to attain their academic goals. As they begin to receive their marks and feedback, it is crucial for Yr 10 to embrace this valuable input as a stepping stone towards improvement. Teachers’ feedback plays a pivotal role in the learning process, enabling students to gain insights into their strengths and areas for growth. By embracing this feedback constructively, Yr 10 can pave the way for continuous progress and development in the semester ahead.

Arnhem Land Update

With less than two weeks to go before Yr 9 depart for their Camp to Arnhem Land, please read below for some important information:

Departure: Students will need to arrive at the Redlands Gym Undercroft no later than 5am on Sunday 28 May. We will be departing at 5.30am sharp for Sydney Airport. Please do not be late.

Illness: Students must take a RAT the night before – should they return a positive test for Covid, the must not come to camp.

Medication: If a student requires prescription or over the counter medication, this should have been communicated in the Medical Authority Form to Eddy Atkins via email. Please do fill one in (found on Pulse) if you have not done so already. This also includes students who might need to take allergy medication.

If students wear contacts, they may find it preferable to wear glasses due to the dusty landscape.

Please find a packing list here: Arnhem Land Packing List, and the camp food menu here: Redlands Midawarr Menu 2023. At the moment, the weather in Arnhem Land is reaching a top of 30 degrees during the day, and a low of 23 degrees overnight. It is imperative that students bring and wear a broad brimmed hat. Students should also pack hydrolite to place in their water.

Further information regarding the Yr 9 Camp to Arnhem Land will be communicated at the Experience to Extend Evening on Tuesday 23 May, 6pm.

Paul Dillion Presentation and Vaping

Last week Redlands hosted Paul Dillion, the Director of the Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA) who provided a number of different presentations to both students and parents. Aside from presenting some of the current research on behavior and consumption of drugs and alcohol with regards to young adults, he also provided a number of updates about vapes and vaping trends.

I have attached a factsheet from the DARTA website which provide some background information on e-cigarettes and vaping available HERE.

One of the key messages from Paul to parents is to be aware of the vapes that are packaged and marketed towards young people, such as those with ‘fruit juice’ flavours. He provided both a health warning, as these can include undisclosed nicotine, and a legal warning about sizable fines for the possession and consumption of these products.

Our school policy with regards to these issues is as follows – ‘Smoking or vaping, the possession or consumption of alcohol and other illegal substances (including e-cigarettes) are prohibited whilst in school uniform, on school grounds, or attending school function.’ This is in place to ensure the physical protection of our students and the long term health and wellbeing.

We highly recommended that if you were unable to attend the presentation that you examine some of the research linked above on the DARTA website.

Week 4 – We Love our Mothers and Carers

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend celebrating the care and support provided by their mothers or caring support-figures in their lives. We are all offered so much support and valuable guidance as we grow, so I hope we all appreciated our mothers or supportive figures or were appreciated by our family members!

Peer Support

At school, another valuable source of guidance comes from our Yr 11 Peer Support students. Held every Friday, Week A, Peer Support has been a huge hit with our Yr 7 cohort. They have valued the cheer and positivity brought by the Yr 11s, and really respected the knowledge and guidance they have been offered about school life. Last week, Yr 11 spoke to Yr 7 about how to manage the return of their assessments. Yr 7 have been navigating how to manage effectively the emotions that might arise when received a disappointing assessment result, while also learning how best to process the valuable feedback they receive on such formative tasks. Our Yr 11s offered them some sage guidance in this space.

Student Planners

During Peer Support, students also had their student planners checked for organisation and parent/carer signatures. Many students are now finding this to be a really valuable resource for managing their work and planning ahead for success.

Can we please take this opportunity to remind parents / carers of the need to sign the planners each week, in preparation for them being checked on each Friday of Week A. If you wish to add any notes to your child’s Tutor, please use the comments section to do so.

Fall Forward Awards

On Tuesday we had our first Yr 7-9 assembly of the term. Our Yr 12 leaders have created a new initiative this year, which is the awarding of the ‘Fall Forward’ award. This award recognises students for trying their best in various fields and really getting involved in all they can in a positive and supportive way. Our inaugural ‘Fall Forward’ recipients in Yr 7 were Jason Gong for his involvement in an international robotics competition during the start of Term 2, and Laura Huang for her attendance at the National Championships of Artistic Swimming in the holidays. Congratulations to both students!

Locks on Lockers

On Wednesday, Mrs Adams and I inspected student lockers for security, checking that they had locks on them. Students had previously been warned that any students lockers lacking a lock would result in students supporting Mr Tod-Hill in a thorough clean-up of the Undercroft and other play areas, and we have quite a collection of students who have volunteered themselves for this. Please ensure lockers have locks on them and are locked.

Staffing News

This week we say farewell to our Dean of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Stacey Smith, who leaves us to take up a curriculum role withing the Department of Education. We thank Mrs Smith for her work and leadership this past 3½ years and will announce her replacement once finalised shortly.

Next week, we welcome Mr Jeff Mesina who takes over teaching Class 5W as Mrs Smith commences her parental leave. Mr Mesina and Mrs Smith will work alongside one another for a few days as part of the transition process and we wish Mrs Smith all the very best ahead of the impending arrival of her first child.

Also connected to this, I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Ms Kate Osborn as our Yr 5 Assistant Coordinator taking over from Mrs Smith,

Mother’s Day Celebration

It was a joy to start the week by welcoming parents in for a Mother’s Day celebration and the buzz of having a significant number of parents and students together was palpable. My thanks to the many staff involved in organising such an important community event for us again.

Child Safeguarding Statement

Also, in our assembly this week, I had the opportunity to share and explain the School’s Child Safeguarding Statement in language that the students were able to understand. Our Yr 6 student leaders were part of the group of students and staff who worked on this statement in Term 1 to ensure student voice was captured in this important aim. The statement is currently on our digital signage and many students have spent time looking at this again.

Wear A Splash of Pink – Friday 26 May

In support of The National Breast Cancer Foundation, we are encouraging every student to add a splash of pink to their uniform next Friday 26 May and make a gold coin donation to the Foundation. We know that this is a poignant charity for so many people in our community and look forward to seeing a pink thread of colour across the campus next Friday.

Year 9 Experiential Learning Program

In our assembly this week, our Principal, Mr Corcoran, spoke to the students about the newly-announced Yr 9 Experiential Learning Program which commences in 2025. Our current Yr 6 students will be the second Year Group to be part of this exciting new experience for Redlands students and to help outline the program, the students enjoyed watching this video, which I encourage families to watch if they have not already.

Open Morning

On Tuesday, we welcomed over 200 people to our Junior Campus Open Morning for prospective families.

As well as hearing from our Principal, Mr Corcoran, Mrs Breckenridge (Head of Prep) and me, our visitors thoroughly enjoyed hearing from two Yr 11 students, Emma Noes and Will Algar. Emma and Will eloquently and passionately shared some of their fondest memories and experiences from their time at Redlands from Preschool until now and how they have lived life to the full in their journey through Redlands.

Having known Emma and Will from an early age, it filled me with immense pride to listen to them address the audience as young adults and share their Redlands story thus far. Following on from this, our guests were taken on student-led tours with many of our Yr 2 and Yr 6 students involved in this part of the morning. As I commented to parents, an important aspect of these types of events is that we choose different students each time to afford as many students as possible with these types of leadership opportunities and I congratulate the students involved in these tours; we have already received numerous complimentary messages on both their confidence and openness as they led groups around the School as well as the authentic feel of the school, which cannot be simply manufactured.

Final Places: Term 2 Student Wellbeing Parent Presentation

We have a few places left for next Tuesday’s Term 2 parent presentation session, led by our resident experts of counsellors. I encourage all families to consider joining us and bookings are essential and close at 5pm on Friday afternoon.

Yr 6 Parent Secondary School Transition Session – Friday 26 May, 8.45am

All Year 6 parents are invited to attend this Secondary School Transition Session and Senior Campus Tour. To attend, please RSVP with any questions you may have about Secondary School via the following invitation.

House Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to very student involved in this week’s annual House Cross Country Carnival. There was a terrific sense of school spirit on show as well as visible evidence of the supportive way in which many students helped each other around the course which can provide an aspect of challenge. Congratulations to McDouall House who were victorious overall and we wish our Redlands team all the very best now as they compete at the HICES Cross Country event next Tuesday in Bathurst.

OOSH Information

Vacation Care bookings are now open and the clubs offered during the three week midyear break have limited spaces. Families who are interested are asked to add their child(ren)’s names down here.

Recycling News

In our assembly this week, our Environment Captains shared some current initiatives with the students as outlined below and hope that our community can support these. We had great results from last term’s Earth Hour (money and electricity saved) and will also be looking to have another one this term.

In terms of collectable recyclables, students can help in the following ways:

  • Nespresso pods – students can bring these in from home and hand in to their teacher to put in the box in the staff room
  • Take away coffee cups – place in the container near the canteen
  • Old batteries can be placed in the box by the IT help desk near the office
  • Old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and electric toothbrush heads can be handed in to class environment reps as we have a collection point at Redlands House.

Secondary Sport

It has been great to see so many students out supporting each other before and after their matches on the weekends, the overall spirit in which the sports are being played and supported have been great to see. A reminder to all students that if they are watching and supporting they need to be in either the Redlands School Uniform (winter uniform blazer included) or the full Redlands Sports Tracksuit.

We expect and encourage full participation in training sessions to build team dynamics, fitness and preparedness for competition. If there is a reason you/your child is not able to take part in training, please contact the relevant sports administrators to discuss (prior to the session taking place).

Last week I spoke about what sport meant to me growing up, as mentioned I would be taking a dive into the Sports Department and having the team outline what it means and has meant to them both growing up and now. Next off the list is Locky Pryor.

Locky is a Redlander from the Class of 2008, he is currently our Director of AFL and Sailing, whilst also completing his Masters in Education. Locky still sails competitively and is off to Italy in a few weeks competing in the Sailing World Championships. As a young kid Locky was heavily involved in AFL and even now is involved coaching at a high level, drafted to the North Melbourne Football club and has a wealth of knowledge about the elite athlete pathway, so if there are any students out there looking at taking AFL (or any sport) to the next level, I encourage you to reach out to Locky and pick his brain about what it takes to get prepared physically and mentally to train, play and recover at a high level.

What sport was to me growing up? – Locky Pryor (Director of AFL & Sailing)

Sports growing up was more of a way of life than a hobby or just something to do when nothing else was available. Fortunately, I had some coordination and friends who all enjoyed sports, which soon became our choice of weekend or after-school activity. Even when nothing was officially organised, we would still be at the park kicking the footy, playing cricket or going for a surf until it was dark, much to our parents’ dismay. At the time, we were just having fun and trying to outdo each other on the field, but we didn’t realise our friendship based on just hanging out and playing sports would last over 20 years, and that we still play social sports and catch up regularly with the same mates that we played sports with from Under 9s AFL. It set the basis of many of my closest friendships, which I’m very grateful for and is still some of the best memories, good and bad, that we all joke about today. Trips away with school, ISA and state teams were always a key highlight of the year as it’s where we could compete and have fun.

The experiences and lessons I learnt from sports growing up were second to none, and particularly some of the Water Polo Friday nights all getting dinner together at each other’s house and Sailing trips away with the School are still some of the best memories I could have asked for as a kid growing up. It didn’t matter if you were good or bad, but it was always about just having fun.

It has now allowed me to travel all over the world to visit friends and family, this includes my upcoming trip to the Sailing World Championship which will be with friends I met on a school sailing trip. I will also be catching up with mates who I did school sports with at Redlands in London, who I haven’t seen in years all because we played sports at school together.

Charity Round Pink Sock Day

This year we will be raising funds and awareness for the Breast Cancer Foundation Australia, we are supporting all teams of all sports to get behind this event and this charity. All students are encouraged to wear a touch of pink during the weekend fixtures. There are limited socks left at the uniform shop for students to purchase.

Balmoral Burn

Please join us supporting the Redlands team up at the finish line on Sunday 28 May!

Football

Congratulations to all teams for their efforts in Round 3. With some tough games against one of the strongest ISA Boys Football programs, Oakhill College, it was great to see all of our teams competing across all age groups. It has been fantastic to see our students go from strength to strength each week and congratulations to those who have been named in the team of the week!

A reminder the details for Round 4 can be found on the Redlands Pulse – Weekly Fixtures tab and on your individual student timetable.

Hockey

The Junior Girls were up first on Saturday against the Barker College Junior B side. The last time these two teams met was in the pre-season and it was a closely matched game finishing in a 1-1 draw. The Redlands Junior Girls were ready for a tough game and came out firing to start the match. They managed to secure an early lead and had the game at 5-0 when the half time siren sounded. They continued to dominate possession in the second half and scored one additional goal to make it a 6-0 win in a very impressive performance by our Junior team.

It was a rivalry match on the weekend for the First XI Hockey team as they took to the field against Barker First XI. Our girls had the advantage in the first half, as more of the play occurred in our attacking circle and a beautiful goal from Heidi de Saxe took us to half time with Redlands up 1-0. As the whistle for the second half blew, Barker came back with vengeance, their attackers moving up the field with greater aggression, resulting in four goals for them. As the final minutes rolled around, Jessica

van Extel, ever determined, scored a stunning goal to bring the final score line to 4-2. Overall, the game was well-matched and the competition was fierce. Our girls played well as a team, supporting each other up and down the field. A big shout out to Megan Kirkpatrick, our incredible goalie, who played amazingly. We are looking forward to our next showdown with Barker in a few weeks’ time!

Both Hockey teams are set to play Oxley College this Saturday, a reminder that the bus will depart at 6:30am on Saturday morning from the Adams Centre. Parental permissions must be completed on the school portal ahead of departure. Best of luck to our hockey teams in Round 4!

A massive congratulations to Eloise Trueman and Jessica van Extel who competed in the NSWCIS Hockey Championships earlier this week. Both Eloise and Jess were selected into the NSWCIS team who will compete at the NSW All Schools Championships in July, a fantastic achievement for our Redlands Hockey players!

Drama and Theatre

What a fantastic week we have had in Drama and Theatre! Our wonderful performers are to be commended on representing Redlands at various external competitions including the Theatresports Australia Competition and the Shakespeare Carnival, Sport for Jove. We were also so honoured to have a Director from the Globe Theatre in London share their insights for a career in the performing arts industry. Redlands Drama and Theatre continues to go from strength to strength and we couldn’t be more proud!

Congratulations to our Theatresports Senior Team!

Fantastic news! Our Year 11 and 12 Theatresports team competed at the Regional Competition on Tuesday 16 of May for the Theatresports Australia Improvisation, All Schools Challenge, and placed Second overall, progressing to the Semi Finals! “This week our Drama students had the opportunity to attend a Q and A with Federay Holmes, the Artistic Director at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. She shared her experiences working in the Entertainment Industry and some of her key life events that have led her to where she is today. We were fortunate enough to receive insight and tips into the application process for Performing Arts Universities and her experiences on the audition panel. We are beyond appreciative to have been given this opportunity and we greatly thank her for sharing her knowledge, time and kindness to us. ” (Phoebe Barnett, Drama Captain)

Drama Student of the Week: Byron Kendrigan

By Phoebe Barnett – Drama Captain

Byron has been extremely dedicated over the past few weeks to his preparation and dedication to his rehearsals for the external Theatresports competition. His encouragement towards his team members this week has definitely been appreciated by those around him. This will be Byron’s first external competition and his eagerness to jump right in has been astounding. He continues to work towards his craft and skills in drama and to his dedication to the Drama program at Redlands.

Junior Music Festival – Thursday 3 August

Speaking of FESTIVALS!? Hot on the heels of our Senior Music Festival is our equally exciting Junior school night of nights – the Junior Music Festival to be held in Term 3.  Get those ball gowns and tuxedos ready for ‘A Night with the Stars’! Students are already working hard in their curriculum and cocurricular lessons and rehearsals to make it a night to remember. Featuring the biggest hits from stage and screen, it will be a memorable celebration which includes every single Junior School student. Junior Open Morning

Well done to all the musicians from Ms Sywak’s Junior Chamber Ensemble, Junior Voices and our pianists Yucong (Melody) Jin and Zhengyou (Yolanda) Bai for your performances to our prospective families. Thank you to Ms McGlade, Ms Roberts and Dr Eskenazi for their work with our performers also.

Australian Composer Incursion (Yrs 11 & 12)

This coming Tuesday we are delighted to host Sydney Conservatorium lecturer and Australian Composer Dr Daniel Rojas to work with our senior students as they drill down on one of his compositions Baile y Fuego (Dance and Fire) as one of their set works of study for their courses. Dr Rojas will also provide one on one feedback on the students’ own compositions during lunch time – another great voice in the mix, alongside their fortnightly sessions with own resident composer, Dr Nick Russoniello. We are fortunate to be resourced by such extraordinary compositional expertise at Redlands and students’ compositions are developing with nuance, dexterity and flair. Later this year will see the Composition Competition opened for all students, with selected works being studio produced for release as part of the annual Redlands EP.

SSO Excursion (Yr 9)

Last Thursday evening, Yr 9 Elective Music students headed to the Opera House and later buzzed about the magnificent experience created for them by concert pianist Stephen Hough as he performed Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.  Particularly delighted with their seat allocation in the choir stalls, they felt were the best seats in the house, right amidst the action!  As a department, were touched by several students going out of their way to vocalise their gratitude for this opportunity. We know that the experience will greatly enrich their ongoing work around the Romantic Music Period across the rest of the term, and their holistic understanding of the development of Western Music tonality and traditions, within sociohistorical contexts.

Advanced Ensemble Auditions

Each new Semester provides opportunity for new intake into our Advanced and Extension ensemble streams.  Junior Campus will make announcement about auditions shortly (intake will be after Junior Music Festival in July) and Senior Campus students are hereby advised that auditions are now open via the Auditions page for Advanced Strings, Advanced Concert Band, Advanced Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Expressions of interest remain open via iLearn for the extension Conducting Class and Chamber & Piano ensembles.

Here to help!

Keep your eye on Pulse and the MUSIC EVENTS page to ensure key dates are all on the family calendar and reach out to your campus Music Office if we can assist in any way.
