Year 8

Yr 8 Relationships Day

Over the last two weeks Yr 8 students have engaged in a number of pastoral activities that culminated in today’s half day workshop.

The program was designed and presented by Dr Tessa Opie (and her associate Jana Gomes) and today’s workshops have been facilitated by Redlands Yr 8 Tutors and PDHPE staff.

While some of the content may have been challenging for our students, the messages about the impact of the language we use when discussing gender and sexual diversity are important for our young people to understand.

Today’s workshop brought into focus the legislation that is currently in place to ensure respectful relationships occur and keep people safe. There was a specific focus on a broad understanding of the law governing both face-to-face and online behaviour, sexual harassment and image sharing online.

At the end of the workshop a number of Yr 8 students (pictured) shared their experiences of the program with the cohort and provided an insightful look into their own personal learnings over the last two weeks.

It is our hope that students will take the key messages of this program and focus on the use of respectful, inclusive language in their daily lives and that while relationships take many forms, mutual respect, discussion and listening are key to ensuring parties gain the best from one another.
