Issue 13 2023 Term 2 Week 3 - 11 May 2023

From The Principal

At Redlands, I am proud that we truly value student voice and agency, and it has been wonderful to see this priority on display recently. This week, students in Years 6-12 have been participating in valuable workshops and presentations focused on healthy relationships, after providing prior input to help shape the content and approach taken in these sessions so that they were most useful for them.

On Tuesday, at a Kindergarten 2024 information session, current Redlands House and prospective parents heard from Yr 2 students Amber Vatcher and Billy Campbell about their Prep School experience and then watched a video created by Yr 5 students Harper Fielding and Henry Partington and narrated by Yr 2 students about a day in the life at Prep School.

Later on Tuesday, in the Secondary School assembly (which was led and run by the Yr 12 student leaders), Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11) and Millie Winton (Yr 10) shared moving reflections on the recent homeland trip to Arnhem Land; and School Captains, Josie Simpson and Daniel Close, introduced the School’s Statement of Commitment to Child Safeguarding, which was developed with input from our Junior and Secondary School student leaders, to the Yr 10-12 students in attendance.

This week’s events just further illustrated the value of our students in shaping, sharing and discussing their educational experiences at Redlands, and I believe this approach only strengthens our School.

On Tuesday, the Liggins Building on the Senior Campus turned 100. Liggins House was officially opened on 9 May 1923, and was named after our co-founder, Miss Elizabeth Liggins.

During its history, it has accommodated boarders; hosted assemblies, concerts and dances; housed Science classrooms, pottery classes and the Junior School; and even had a bomb shelter constructed underneath it in World War 2.

It has been wonderful to see this building, which has been the heart and soul of the campus for 100 years, receive a facelift this year, and I would like to thank the many parents who have supported the Liggins Restoration Appeal.

Music

Time is flying, so we must be having fun!  It’s been another full and rewarding week in our P-12 Music Department, with Junior Campus Curricular and Cocurricular ensembles playing up a storm in rehearsals; our Yr 12 HSC Music 1 students offering their Core & Elective performance pieces for assessment; and Yr 9 Elective Music students are heading to the Opera House this evening to watch Stephen Hough perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in support of their unit on the Romantic Period.

Bothe Junior and Senior Music Festival rehearsals are underway and Secondary School families will be receiving a letter with key information in the week ahead. We’re grateful for all our Friends of Music who have come on board to add some extra sparkle to these events.

Wishing our community a wonderful weekend and week to come.

Director of Music P-12

HICES Cocurricular Music Festival

Thank you to the students who auditioned to attend HICES in August this year. We will be in touch with the outcome as soon as we have been notified by the HICES office, and we look forward to taking the successful candidates with us to the festival in August.  We were delighted to hear this week that our Lead Conductor and Head of Music Enrichment, Mr Mathew Owen has been selected to conduct the combined HICES Concert Band – a testament to the strength in our programs here. Our Head of Choral P-12, Ms Nicole Roberts, will also be assisting with this event.

Studio Concerts – Weeks 5 – 7

Our Studio Concert Series each semester provides an informal and relaxed opportunity for our developing musicians to share their progress with a supportive audience of family and friends. Though not all studios will be holding concerts in Semester One, these events will be hosted by many of our Specialist Music Tutors and we invite members of our community to join us in the dates and times below for their child / friend’s performance growth.

THANK YOU to the RPFA Committee and all parent volunteers who were involved in organising the Second Hand Uniform Sale this week. Without your support and dedication, this ongoing initiative would not be possible.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wed 17 May will be from Mosman to The Rocks, returning via ferry, so no dogs please. Meet at Mosman Bay ferry on Avenue Rd at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

Book Club

Come along and enjoy the lively conversation of other Redlands parents from all around the world with a common love of reading. The Book Club meets twice each School term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

Our next meeting is Wed 17 May from 7pm at Tania’s house. We will be discussing Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Please email Tania or call her on 0450473484 to let her know if you are coming so that she can plan appropriately for numbers. Reminder, we will only have light nibbles and drinks, no dinner. Please let Tania know if you would like to bring something.

If you want to pick up our next book, it is The Familiars by Stacey Halls. We will meet to discuss this book on Mon 19 Jun at morning tea. If you would like to host the meeting, or if you might be interested but have concerns about what’s involved, please contact Monica or Sabiha to have a chat.

Also, if you would be happy to host a meeting in the future but are just not available to do so in May/June, please let us know as well! We still have 4 more meetings in the second half of the year to organise!

Books planned for Term 3 are: The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and BABEL by R.F. Kuang.

Drug and Alcohol Education

Presentations to Year 10, 11 and 12, delivered by Paul Dillon, were well received by students. His direct and humorous style enabled him to speak to students candidly about the dangers of drug and alcohol use. Parents who attended the evening session were provided with a great deal of data and were most interested in the illegality of vapes – they require a GP prescription in Australia and illegal use can result in a very steep fine and in some other states in Australia, a prison sentence. Paul Dillon lamented that there was limited policing of these laws and this aspect of tackling vaping needs diligent attention. Paul Dillon also provided recommendations for what parents can do to keep their teens as safe as possible.

Theatre Collaboration

On Monday evening our IB Theatre students engaged in their Collaborative Project Examination offering us a wonderful display of student talent and creativity. Held in the Drama Theatre, our Year 12 IB students delivered strong performances which were then discussed and critiqued by the audience of Year 12 HSC Drama students, staff and parents. In three groups, the students used the psychological disorder of Munchausens by Proxy, disability rights activist Helen Keller and Mexican painter Frida Khalo, to dramatically explore complex concepts centred around relationships, entrapment, freedom, resilience and creativity.

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition

Last week, 55 Year 7-11 students participated in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition, a one-hour problem solving competition designed to encourage student curiosity and promote multiple modes of thinking as well as solving real-world problems. It proved to be quite a difficult competition and put the students’ knowledge of Mathematics and Algorithmic problem solving to the test. Congratulations to those students who opted to participate in the competition. Students will be notified via email of the results and solutions.

Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC)

Students are invited to participate in the Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC). The OUCC builds on the principles used in the Computational and Thinking Competition and helps students to further develop their skills to produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems. The OUCC is a two-round online challenge. The first round of the OUCC will be held on Thursday 25 May at Redlands. The competition will run in the morning with arrival at 6:50am for a 7:00am start. Students who qualify after the first round will be invited to the second round, held on Thursday 8 June.

For Year 7 and 8 students, all tasks are Blockly and for Year 9-11 students, all tasks are code submissions. For more information, please click here.

International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT) Wednesday May 17

Next Wednesday we will celebrate the diversity of our school community and mark IDAHOBIT Day. Our Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) will be selling rainbow lapel ribbons at the gates and will hold a bake sale on the Fahl Garden at lunchtime. Monies raised will go to organisations working against discrimination and celebrating diversity.

While the day remains normal school uniform, students are invited to make visible their allyship with LGBTQIA+ people by adding a splash of colour to their uniform (such as socks, ribbon, scarf, bandana etc).

Yr 12 Formal Update

The Year 12 formal has been confirmed for Friday 23 June at the Shangri-La, The Rocks. All parents and carers should have received an information letter that contains details of the Yr 12 Formal including ticketing, table bookings, dietary requirements and expectations. All formal bookings are made via the Prom Events Website.

On the last day of the term (Friday 23 June), Year 12 will be involved in a Give Back initiative. The Year 12 Give Back Initiative will involve Year 12 giving back to the local Redlands and Cremorne community through a range of service-focused activities. The aim of this initiative is to allow Year 12 to become servant leaders and put others before themselves, before they think of themselves on the night of their Year 12 formal, through undertaking service activities that encourage empathy, compassion and kindness which are core to our Redlands values.

The day will proceed as followed:

Period 1 – Give Back Presentation by Naomi Escott from Rough Edges.
Period 2 – 10–12 Final Assembly – (led by the Yr 12 Leadership Team)
10:10 am (recess) – Year 12 make their way directly to their local Give Back service initiative.
12:30 pm – Year 12 are dismissed from their Give Back service initiative and make their way directly home to prepare for the Year 12 Formal.

Y12 IB Theatre Review – Ms Martin

What a joy it was to watch the Year 12 IB Theatre students perform their Collaborative Projects on Monday night. Each group devised their own performances about famous individuals, developing very unique concepts that showcased their talents across all performative and technical elements, including costuming, props and amazingly cool sound and visual effects.

Daisy, Dan, Maya and Eve were masterful in how they captured the tension, chaos and horror of Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s life. Lily, Jonny, Jess and Julia performed their highly original take on the inspiring biography of Helen Keller, using a range of exciting techniques to tell the story of this brilliant woman. Meanwhile, Claudia, Sabrina and Lucy painted a captivating portrait of the majestic Frida Kahlo in a stunningly cohesive performance.

A brilliant Q & A session followed, where students engaged confidently and professionally with the audience to seek feedback on their work. Overall, I was blown away by the exceptional quality of these performances, and must congratulate all students involved, including the Production crew! Another big congratulations must go to Ms Lamb, whose expertise and encouragement was so evident on the night, as well as Ms Sweetman and the whole Drama team who work tirelessly to support the students to realise their performances.

HSC Core Session 5

On Monday, Yr 12 HSC students had their 5th HSC Core Session with the Dean of HSC, Ms. Lucy Benjamin.

The following key points were discussed:

  • Year 12 only has 2 terms left (17 weeks!)
  • The ATAR will be given to every HSC student, and the ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
  • The HSC mark for each course tells you about your performance in your exams and assessments. There’s no quota as to the number of students who can achieve top marks.
  • Your ATAR tells you about your position, or ranking, compared to other students in NSW and takes into account your achievement in all your HSC courses. Its only purpose is to help universities select applicants for their courses.
  • Your HSC marks (your performance) and ATAR (your position) are different measures of achievement, therefore should not be compared.
  • Courses are scaled using the mean scores and distribution of marks, which indicate the ability of all students studying the course. Courses studied by students who perform well in all their courses will be scaled highly.
  • Working together as a cohort, and helping everyone to do well for the purpose of doing well, does help.

Paul Dillon Drugs and Alcohol Presentation to Yr 11

Last Year, Paul Dillon presented to the 2024 cohort in Yr 10 incorporating tips for taking care of a friend when drunk, specifically:

  • Using a bucket for a friend who feels ill – not the toilet
  • Giving a drunk friend a bottle of water and allowing them to drink when they want to – not forcing them to drink water
  • Using the “chair test” to allow a friend to sober up over time and monitoring their ability to stay upright in the chair – never allow a drunk friend to lie down on their back
  • Calling 000 if a friend if drunk and unconscious
  • Download the EmergencyPlus App – an automatic link to emergency help

The Yr 10 presentation reinforced the need for young people to always have a fist full of food prior to drinking, a glass of water prior to their first drink and to alternate water with alcohol throughout the evening in order to feel better the next day. Paul’s advice is always framed as guidance and best practice for the safety of young people.

This year, Paul included further research on the use of vapes, cannabis and the impact of alcohol on the developing brain. He reinforced the fact that there are still several unknown factors with vapes. They have not been around long enough to fully understand the long-term impacts of vape usage on a person’s health. However, he did present the uncontrolled process for vape production and what is inside vapes that people inhale while using them. He also presented the legalities of vape and cannabis usage and the fines associated with their use or possession in NSW.

Paul’s last point of advice was around the current research of how alcohol can impact the growth and development of a young person’s brain. He shared that the brain of a female can continue to develop through their 20’s and brain of a male can continue developing until the age of 40. Regular drinking every week before the brain fully develops can reduce the size of the hippocampus by 10%. As the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex manage risk-taking, decision-making  and appropriate emotional and social responses, it is a significant portion of the brain that needs all the time necessary to fully develop. Therefore, he encourages everyone to consider waiting as long as possible to begin experimenting with alcohol.

Arnhem Land

Thank you to Sophia Rolon, Charlotte Hugman, Alfie Leach, Antonia Morgan, Conor Ikin, Hamish Campbell, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Melinda Wright and Sholto Mirrlees-Black who shared their experience of visiting the Yolngu community in Arnhem Land. At the Year Meeting last week, students were able to share their experience on country, including the spear fishing, crab hunting, basket weaving and plant dying as well as the massive floods that came through after rain and the appearance of a salt water crocodile during evening story time. While the transition to living without screens was unique, it was welcome and this groups of students took so much away from this experience.

Students were taught about the importance of Welcome to Country and what this means to the Yolngu community as well as the deep connection, relation and kinship between people, places and things.

Melbourne University

It was an intense 48 hours when students flew from Sydney to Melbourne and participated in two full days of workshops to explore the offerings at Melbourne University and to experience what life would be like on campus and around Melbourne. Students navigated the city together, found their way from one end of campus to the other and even participated in a comedy show as Comedy Week 2023 was running in the city. Students enjoyed the experience of being a student for the day, learning about dorm life and being part of a college as well as the perks of staying in a nice hotel throughout the visit. Thank you to Anneka Steele, Frederick Yates, William Algar, William Andrew, Ahnu Guan, Andrew Kinghorn, Janes Stuart, Charlotte Wrigglesworth and Annie Zhang for sharing their experience with the cohort at our Year Meeting last week.

Student Congratulations

Daisy Thomas had the privilege to travel for three weeks in the end of Term 1 to Europe to compete in a number of free ski competitions. Daisy has competed internationally throughout her skiing career and her goal this time around was to get on the podium for a Europa Cup and she achieved this goal, placing 3rd in the Big Air Competition in Corvatsch, Switzerland! She also placed 4th in the Slopestyle Competition. However, her highlight throughout this experience was winning the World Rookie Tour in Italy which gained her an invitation to The Nines, where some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world spend a week skiing in an eye-popping terrain park. For Daisy, there was nothing better than being able to spend time skiing with and getting to know some of her heroes. She managed to be the first Australian female to land a new trick there, the Double Cork 1080, for which she was then nominated for Junior Athlete of the Year at Snow Australia! Congratulations to Daisy for her incredible accomplishments in skiing and we wish her the best as she prepares for the Junior World Championships in New Zealand in August.

Alissandra Braden just finished competing at the Sailing State Championships in Queensland. While Alissandra has had several opportunities at a high level of competition, including a World Competition in Portugal last year, she continues to improve her results and to push herself in competition, even beating her own coach at States! Alissandra was up against 47 people who compete on the same racecourse at the same time. Her fleet even included members from ASF, Australian Sailing Futures. Alissandra earned 2nd Female Overall, 1st in Under 17 Female, 2nd in Under 17 Overall and 7th Overall! Congratulations to Alissandra for this incredible achievement!

Well done to Lara Farrell and Mia McFarlane for completing their Surf Life-Saving Bronze Medallion over the term break at North Styne SLSC. The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge in order to be able to participate in Surf Life Saving patrol operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia.  Congratulations to Mia and Lara!

Forbes Fundraiser

A Message from Yr 11 – As some of you may know, Forbes is a small town in NSW, neighbouring Lismore, which went through dire levels of flooding last year. They have slowly been recovering from flood levels reaching a 70 year record!! The environment is devastated and the community is still in desperate need of some assistance from those who can help.

This drive started in the end of Term 1 and is continuing through the beginning of Term 2. Please bring in anything you can manage and it will go a long way!!

Items to include could be:

seedlings
canned goods
non-perishable foods
notebooks and school supplies
cutlery, utensils, frypans, cutting boards, bowls
financial aid
first aid kits
clothing
sewing items

Arnhem Land Reflection

During this week’s Yr 10-12 Student Led Assembly, Millie Winton (Yr 10) and Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11) enthralled us with their overview of the school trip to Arnhem Land during the Easter holidays. Their journey to this culturally rich region in the Northern Territory of Australia, home to the Yolngu people, provided students with an extraordinary educational experience. The trip cemented a deep understanding of the interconnection between land, culture, and the Yolngu people, leaving a lasting impact on their perspectives.

Speech:

A few weeks ago, 16 Redlands students flew up to the Northern Territory to meet, stay with, learn from, and connect to Yolŋu first nations people on Gumatj country. Some of you may know this place as ‘North-East Arnhem Land’, named by Mr Dutch explorer Arnhem. Some of you may know about its hot humid climate, its picturesque beaches, its wild-life, or its exotic red sand.

But this trip, “the Arnhem-land trip”, was more than just a fun get-away beach-side fishing holiday.

Hi, ŋarra yäku sholto

Ŋarra yäku Millie, and we wanted to share some of the exciting, scary, amazing, impactful, and life-changing experiences that we were so lucky to have.

One of the coolest moments from the trip for me was seeing a bäru, crocodile, walk onto the beach.

We were all listening to one of the elders, Djalinda, tell us the stories of the stars.

Personally, I was laying on my back just taking in the beautiful sky, you can see the milky way up there it’s pretty stunning.

Iziah, one of the little kids, goes “bäru!” – That’s not really something you wanna hear when you’re laying on the beach almost asleep so after jolting up I saw this massive croc just making its way slowly up the shore. The most amazing part of this was how calm everyone was. One of the Yolngu, Randy, just went straight up to it and fed it a fish.

But we weren’t just crocodile prey. Some of us went out to the shallow salt water spearing for crabs. Sadly, we were unsuccessful when we hunted for stingray. While the ḏirramu learnt to throw spears, the miyalk learnt how to weave with gunga the most colourful baskets. We dug for yams, we were healed, we swam in lagoons, we drove through a fifty metre stretch of flood-water, we made fires, we ventured to sacred beaches. And the Yolngu, through all this, taught us so much.

We learnt from the wise Elders, we learnt from the energetic children. Language, skills, kinship, stories. They all had so much to share.

And they shared not only knowledge, but also all their kindness. They welcomed us as if we were family, because to them we were family. For Yolngu everyone is connected, and everyone should honour those connections. We miss them all so much. I can only attempt to be as welcoming as they all were.

I learnt that country is the foundation for our connection. We stayed 4 nights at Bawaka, where the spirit of the opulent Macassan princess Baini still lives. Bawaka, that place will stay with me forever.

Without my phone or any plan, just living freely each day, I lived in the moment, and I bonded with the country that was with me at all times.

One of the most amazing parts of coming into this community was seeing how deeply affixed the elders were with the land around them. Watching the ladies find a yam from the tiniest root sticking up from the ground made me realise how disengaged I am from the one thing that will always be there. Friends, people, they come and go but country is something that is continuous and constant.

My one takeaway is that country is something everyone must truly treasure. Sit outside, watch the sunrise, go on a bushwalk, however it is you connect with country, make time for it.

So think back on the acknowledgement of country I made earlier. What does it mean to you? I think I might finally have an idea of what those words mean to me.

Nhäma yalala, see you later.

Millie Winton (Yr 10) and Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11)

Paul Dillon

This week Yr 10 were engaged in a presentation by Paul Dillon. Paul Dillon, a renowned expert in the field of drug education, shared his valuable insights and expertise with our students. His presentation aimed to educate and empower our Yr 10 students with accurate and up-to-date information about drugs, their effects, and responsible decision-making. His extensive experience in the field of drug education ensured that his presentation was engaging, age-appropriate, and tailored to the needs of our students. Paul addressed important topics such as the risks associated with drug use, strategies for harm reduction, and the importance of making informed choices. He provided evidence-based information, debunked myths, and encouraged open dialogue around drugs and related issues. Paul Dillon’s expertise in communicating with young people has made him a sought-after speaker in schools across the country.

Respectful Relationships

This week, Yr 10 were engaged with the In Your Skin Respectful Relationships Day designed to promote healthy relationship skills and foster a gender transformative approach. By addressing various topics such as media analysis, porn literacy, gender and sexuality, sexual coercion, and informed consent, the workshops aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of these subjects. By encouraging students to actively consider their relationship values and expectations, as well as fostering a healthy and realistic sense of self and others, the program empowered students to develop healthy and respectful relationships. This approach is crucial in promoting positive attitudes and behaviors, reducing the risk of harmful behaviors such as coercion or lack of consent, and fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment for all students.

Such initiatives can have a long-lasting impact on the students’ understanding of gender, sexuality, consent, and healthy relationship dynamics, which can positively influence their interactions both now and in the future.

Yr 4 Camp

Another week, another camp, and this week I am reporting from the picturesque Southern Highlands as I spend today with Yr 4 on their three-day camp.

The venue is stunning and it has been wonderful to see the connections between students and between students and staff in an outdoor education environment. Just as was the case last week for Yr 6 camp, many students have shared how they have made some new friendships with peers by simply being in the same activity group.

We will post some pictures of the trip so far on the Yr 4 page on Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back at approximately 2.30pm on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the dedicated team of teachers here caring for the group.

It is an important responsibility, but the meticulous planning of Mr Watkins and the team has helped with the smooth organisation of the trip yet again.

Mother’s Day Celebration – Monday 15 May, 7.45am

We are delighted to host a Mother’s Day Celebration where Mothers can come together for coffee and conversation.

Join us from 7.45am in the Piazza (Junior Campus), where our Baristas will serve freshly brewed hot beverages, accompanied with some light refreshments. Students will enjoy a complimentary juice popper.

This year we’ll also have a Redlands photo booth available for you to take a happy snap with your children

Final reminder RSVP: A final reminder for catering purposes and to give us a sense of numbers in attendance, please could attendees all RSVP here.

Please note that Junior School students will return to class for learning by 8.30am.

Student Health Matters

The cooler change of temperature has seen a simultaneous rise in student absences due to flu-like symptoms and the like and just yesterday, we had 6 staff and in excess of 50 students away unwell (not including Yr 4 who were on camp). We continue to be grateful to families for keeping children home when they are unwell and ask that this is a continued focus moving ahead to protect students and staff. Students who are unwell simply do not have the cognitive capacity to learn well when they are sick, and a few have needed to be sent home this week from school.

Term 2 Student Wellbeing Parent Presentation – Tuesday 23 May, 8.45am

We are delighted to confirm the content of this term’s parent presentation session, led by our resident experts of counsellors. I encourage all families to join us and bookings are essential.

Yr 6 Parent Secondary School Transition Session – Friday 26 May, 8.45am

All Year 6 parents are invited to attend this Secondary School Transition Session and Senior Campus Tour. To attend, please RSVP with any questions you may have about Secondary School via the following invitation.

Years 5 and 6 Oxford University Computational Challenge Opportunity

Redlands is excited to again offer the opportunity for Yrs 5 and 6 students who are experienced with Blockly coding, computational thinking and problem-solving, to enter Round One of the global Oxford University Computational Challenge (OUCC), which will be held on Thursday 25 May here at Redlands. For interested students, further information on the competition and how to enter, please click here.

OOSH Information

This week, the OOSH students enjoyed learning about basic first aid from our School Nurse, Mrs Henery. Arranged by Ms Nogueira, the students embraced the chance to find out more and one thing that Mrs Hemery challenged them all to know was their parents’ contact details and their home address.

Separate to this, parents who use the OOSH service are reminded that all students should be collected by 6pm. Some of our staff have their own children to collect or have other commitments and this is being increasingly impacted. Please note that students collected after 6pm more than 3 times per term will lose their permanent spots in OOSH.

Staffing News

It is with great sadness that Mrs Claire Hunt, PA to the Head of Preparatory School and Prep School Receptionist, will be leaving us at the end of the term.

Claire has decided to spend more time with her family, return to her writing and enjoy travelling with her now adult children. Claire has worked at Redlands for seven years and for so many of our families, has been the immediate face and information sharer for so long.  She has cared for and listened to so many students and families over the years, we will miss her. We will of course farewell Claire with style at the end of the term.

Absence Notifications

If your child will be absent or late to school, please be reminded to inform the school office by either emailing jsabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au or via the Redlands App prior to 9am. If we have not had any notification, an absence SMS will be sent to you at 9.30am as a prompt.

Uniform Reminders

It’s been really wonderful to see Yr 9 wearing their full school uniforms with pride this past week. Students must wear their Blazer to and from school as part of their Formal Winter Uniform. Students should not be arriving to school wearing their PE uniform, even if they have a practical PE lesson in Period 1. Students will need to get changed at the start of this lesson.

The Redlands Uniform creates an identity for the School and gives our students a sense of belonging. Wearing the uniform with pride means our students are respecting and representing our Redlands Vision, Mission and Values. We thank you for supporting this and helping your young person to uphold these expectations.

Arnhem Land Update

With our Year 9 Camp to Arnhem Land coming up in Week 6, please read through the pre-learning information (which includes a packing list) available on our Yr 9 Pulse News Feed. It is imperative that parents/carers complete the Health and Wellbeing Form which can be found HERE.

If your young person requires medication (prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete and return to Mr Atkins, a Medical Authority Form located on Pulse, and also found HERE. This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins by Friday 19 May. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication.

It is important that parents/carers also update their young person’s medical details on Engage.

Camp Details

Our Camp is hosted at the Gulkula site, a significant Gumatj ceremonial site widely accepted by all clans as a meeting place. Since 1999 Gulkula has been used as the site for the annual Garma Festival and significant investment in facilities, meeting rooms, training spaces, catering, dining and accommodation has taken place. The site is a short drive from Gove airport and the regional hub of Nhulunbuy.

Students are provided with tents and camp beds and have access to permanent sanitation blocks. All meals are made on-site by local caterers in the industrial kitchen. Students will have access to the air-conditioned Knowledge Centre for some sessions. Other learning opportunities take place across the Gulkula site and through off-site excursions to sites of local cultural importance, including the highly regarded Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Arts Centre in nearby Yirrkala. Average daytime temperatures in Nhulunbuy in early June reach 29°C falling to 23°C at night, with a low chance of precipitation.

Students must arrive to school on Sunday 28 May at 5am sharp. They will be transported via bus to Sydney Airport where the cohort will fly to Gove via Cairns. Once students arrive at Gove Airport, they will be bussed to the Gulkula site.

Students will return to Sydney Airport via two separate flight times on Friday 2 June in the evening. Dependant on airline scheduling, these arrival times will be confirmed shortly.

Yr 8 Relationships Day

Over the last two weeks Yr 8 students have engaged in a number of pastoral activities that culminated in today’s half day workshop.

The program was designed and presented by Dr Tessa Opie (and her associate Jana Gomes) and today’s workshops have been facilitated by Redlands Yr 8 Tutors and PDHPE staff.

While some of the content may have been challenging for our students, the messages about the impact of the language we use when discussing gender and sexual diversity are important for our young people to understand.

Today’s workshop brought into focus the legislation that is currently in place to ensure respectful relationships occur and keep people safe. There was a specific focus on a broad understanding of the law governing both face-to-face and online behaviour, sexual harassment and image sharing online.

At the end of the workshop a number of Yr 8 students (pictured) shared their experiences of the program with the cohort and provided an insightful look into their own personal learnings over the last two weeks.

It is our hope that students will take the key messages of this program and focus on the use of respectful, inclusive language in their daily lives and that while relationships take many forms, mutual respect, discussion and listening are key to ensuring parties gain the best from one another.

Technically, Winter does not begin in the Southern Hemisphere until 1 June (write that one down for a fun trivia fact), but we definitely experienced quite a cold snap this week! Luckily, students have been able to rug up in their winter blazers, with jumpers underneath (only when on school grounds) and then escape into the warmth of their classroom to negate the worst of the cold. It is a timely point to remind everyone of uniform requirements during our Winter Terms though. If you are unsure, please check the uniform policy on our Yr 7 Page on Pulse.

This week, we started with an important Yr 7 Assembly on Monday, where I reminded students of key expectations in the Secondary School. Reaffirming some of the key messages outlined below will be valuable in ensuring our young people stay on the right track this term!

  • Student planners need to be signed by parents every Thursday, Week A
  • Technology is only to be used in the classroom for learning purposes. Laptops should remain closed until teachers direct them to open them.
  • Phones are not to be used in class. Phones are not to be used around the school grounds. It is recommended that phones remain locked in lockers for the day.
  • Lockers should have a lock on them. This needs to be done by Week 4.
  • Except for Thursday, students should not be arriving at school in PE uniform; students should not be leaving school in PE uniform.
  • The Health Centre is a resource for supporting students with medical issues. Please do not go there unless you have a genuine health concern.
  • Students need to arrive promptly to class and Tutor group. Laptops, textbooks, exercise books, student planners and pencil cases should be brought to every lesson.

We also heard from Yr 7 student, Jason Gong, who recently travelled to America to compete in an international robotics competition. He explained that he and his team had to construct small robots that could shoot discs into various targets around a court. He also shared with the cohort his passion for Robotics and how it developed from his interest in Lego.

I have encouraged Yr 7 students to let me know if they wish to share something with the cohort in one of our assemblies, so we can all learn from each other and our different experiences.

Meanwhile, this week, I was able to visit a few different Yr 7 classes in action, including Art and English (technically, this last one was cheating, as it was my English class!)

7P Art were cheery, enthusiastic and very engaged in their art-making in preparation for their assessment in Week 4. Students are currently working on completing a painting that shows their understanding of the Elements and Principles of Art. They have been tasked with creating a resolved painting by using acrylic paint and a monochromatic colour scheme. Their paintings should display a composition of forms which should appear three-dimensional by using tints, shades and tone. As a total amateur in the art world, I was fascinated by the focus and diligence the students demonstrated in painting their colourful shapes. There are surely some young Picassos amongst us!

7M English are currently studying the novel, Skellig. Recently, students were looking at the poem The School Boy by William Blake – a poem alluded to on several occasions in the novel. After exploring this poem in class, students were challenged to create their own poem, The 2023 School Student, reflecting their understanding of and feelings towards school. To draw out their inner budding poet, I took my class to a novel lesson location on the roof of the Leaning Hub. It was an exciting and different new space to engage in our leaning in a creative way.

A big congratulations to Buddy, Lachlan, Aimee and Liv who confidently presented details about their lunchtime newspaper club, The Irregular, to the Years 10-12 assembly on Tuesday, and are planning to do it all over again to the Years 7-9 assembly next Tuesday.

On Thursday, Yr 7 was given a valuable presentation on Respectful Relationships from external presenter Jana Gomes of In your Skin. Through a mixture of verbal presentation, video material and group discussions, students were engaged in thinking about:

  • Social and emotional changes during puberty
  • What to do if you think you like someone
  • Differences between flirting and sexual harassment
  • Understanding everyday consent

Students responded maturely to the presentation and helped to reaffirm some valuable principles when it comes to engaging in relationships with others. Many of these topics will be addressed further in our future Tutor sessions.

Upcoming Assessments:

  • PDHPE – Week 4 (19/5)
  • Visual Arts – Week 4 (19/5)
  • Mathematics – Week 5 (23/5)
  • HSIE – Week 5 (26/5)
  • Technology – Week 7 (9/6)

For full details, see the  Assessments tab on the Yr 7 Core Page on iLearn.

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 5: Vaccination Catch Ups (Wednesday 24/5)

An opportunity for students who missed Term 1 vaccinations to be vaccinated. Further information will be forthcoming.

Kindergarten 2024 and 2025

It was lovely to welcome current parents of Redlands House Seniors and TG students as well as new faces to our 2024/2025 Kindergarten Information session this week. It provided us all with an opportunity to connect and start sharing information as to how Kindergarten works as well as what the transition from Preschool to the Preparatory School looks like.

It was wonderful to share the importance of student agency and voice via the student interview with Billy and Amber (Year 2) as well as the A Day in the Life of a Prep School student video (filmed and edited by Harper Fielding and Henry Partington, Yr 5).

For Redlands House families who didn’t make the session, please know that there will be other orientation sessions that will occur later this year. I encourage you to come along to those to start forming connections with the Prep school and to answer any questions that may be starting to pop up.

A Message from OOSH

Parents and carers are reminded that children are to be picked up from OOSH no later that 6pm. Sadly, we are finding that some parents are consistently picking their children up after 6pm. As we have communicated before, this is not fair on our OOSH staff who need to go home to their own families or must catch public transport. Our OOSH staff understand and appreciate there are circumstances where a parent may be running late due to traffic, this is unavoidable and, in most cases, a one-off event.

To provide some boundaries to this situation, in the event of reoccurring lateness, 2 ‘late’ reminder emails will be sent. Unfortuantely, if the child is picked up for a third time after 6pm, the OOSH enrolment will be cancelled.

On a brighter note, last week, OOSH had a visit from Gillian Henery, Junior Campus nurse. She discussed first aid with our OOSH students, and they practised some first aid techniques with them. After discussing with students what they would do in an emergency or how they would contact their families, it was noticed that quite a few of our students did not know their parents phone numbers or their address. It is a good idea for families to make sure that phone numbers are known and that students can provide their address to a first responder if ever needed.

Healthy Eating Week

We strongly advocate for healthy eating at Redlands House. The students are always encouraged to eat healthy foods, or everyday foods as we call them, first before any sweet treats. Preschool children need to eat foods from all five healthy food groups – vegetables, fruit, grain foods, dairy and protein. Healthy foods have nutrients that are important for growth, development and learning. In Week 4, all of Redlands House will focus on healthy eating and exercise.

Learning Discussions for Junior

Parent Teacher Interviews for families of Junior Students will be held in Week 5, from Monday 22 May to Friday 26 May. Interviews can be booked here. The code is v5kdf. Bookings can be made until Friday 19 May at 9am.  If you’re unable to attend these interviews in person, we can arrange for the interview to be conducted via Zoom. Please book in and advise your teacher directly if you would prefer a Zoom interview session.

Secondary Sport

Last week I mentioned that we will dive into the Sports Department and outline individually what sport means to us, I thought it best to start with myself as the Head of Secondary School Sport.

I grew up playing anything, you name it I have probably played it, I would spend my recess and lunch in the playground playing football and rugby, after school it would be hockey, cricket and basketball, as I grew older rugby was introduced and then there was golf (which when I can I still get out and have a hit). Sport to me was never about winning or losing, don’t get me wrong winning is great and I was super competitive and I didn’t much like losing, but I enjoyed the friendships I built more, I still have friends today that I played U10s rugby with, that is why sport is so good, you might not know someone but you find that playing together for years builds bonds. That is why we as coaches and supporters need to remind students that it is important now to be in the moment, to enjoy the games they are playing, enjoy their team mates, enjoy showing up to training no matter how they are feeling or how their day went, being around their teammates and enjoying the process of sport can make a huge change in how students feel.

Please see the link to the ISA Code of Conduct, this is to be followed by all players, supporters and school officials.

CIS Trials

Last Thursday, several Redlands AFL students headed out to trial at Bankstown Sports Stadium, and this saw 130 boys trialling for the ISA Boys team and a further 100 girls for the Girls team. The selectors picked a team of 22 boys and girls to represent CIS at the NSW Championships in Albury on May 28-30

The following students represented Redlands: Oscar Carlyon, Julien Newman, Otto Sampson Ross, Lachlan Price-Pontifex, Heidi de Saxe and Heidi Charles.
We had great success with three students picked for the CIS team. Lachie was selected and presented jersey #7 in the Boys team, and both Heidi de Saxe and Heidi Charles were picked in the Girls team.

  • Jr Boys vs Cranbrook – ELS Hall #3 – 12:00 PM (Arrive 11:15 PM)
  • Inter Boys vs Riverview – ELS Hall #3 – 01:30 PM (Arrive 12:45 PM)

*Senior Boys vs Newington – Macquarie Uni – 6:35 pm Friday Night (Arrive 5:45 PM in Full School Uniform)*
*Games yet to be confirmed.
Please remember to be at your game 45 mins before the start time, and we have had several players arriving late, which has caused issues with games.

Football

It was great to see all of our teams at home for Round 2. With such a large Football cohort this season, it was a busy morning at Macquarie with some very exciting match ups. Congratulations to our Boys and Girls Football players who have been named in the team of the week for Round 2!  (photos attached). With the majority of our teams playing at home again this weekend in Round 3 it will be another great weekend at Macquarie University and we encourage all players to arrive early or stay after their game to support their Redlands peers.

Well done to our 1st Boys Football team who played against St Pius in Round 3 of the CIS Cup this week. It was a hard-fought game, with both teams having some chances but finishing the first half as 0-0. St Pius came out firing in the second half and managed to score an early goal to give them some momentum, despite our best efforts we were unable to hold them off in the second half, finishing with a 1-3 loss. Congratulations to our 1st Boys side, making it through to Round 3 of the CIS Cup is a fantastic achievement and it will be exciting to see how this team progresses over the course of the season ahead.

Hockey

The Junior team is going from strength to strength after another fantastic team performance in Round 2. The team had a fantastic win over Blue Mountains Grammar School in a very dominant game from our Redlands side. The team finished with a 8-0 win and are proving to be a strong force for the season ahead.

The 1st Girls also had a fantastic game on Saturday and, despite missing a few key players, they have shown their depth of talent within the team. Finishing the day with a 2-2 draw against a strong Chevalier side, it has been a great start to the season for the 1st Girls as they continue to build on their great form from the 2022 Season.

Both our 1st and Junior Girls will be up against Barker in Round 3 in what is sure to be a tough match up for both sides.

Drama and Theatre

Drama and Theatre students have had an outstanding and exciting week! The Yr 12 IB Theatre classes wowed their audience with their highly impressive and thought-provoking performances, a special thank you to their teacher, Ms Esther Lamb, for her great work on Yr 12 IB Theatre. Upcoming is our external Shakespeare and Theatresports Competitions and we wish our teams well for representing Redlands at these external events. Our Drama Captain, Phoebe Barnett has also recognised a Drama and Theatre student of the week!

Yr 12 IB Curriculum Performance Evening

“On Monday evening, the Drama Studio played host to three vibrant worlds: those of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Helen Keller, and Frida Kahlo. This performance evening had been a term and a half in the making; half-yearly exams and all.

From the get-go, the audience was immersed in the world of Gypsy Rose Blanchard – perhaps the best-known victim of Munchausen Syndrome by proxy – and her murderous quest for freedom. Eve, Dan, Daisy, and Maya presented a twisted retelling of Gypsy’s illnesses and eventual disillusionment at the hands of her own mother – and her reclamation of freedom in the least free of settings: prison.

Next, the life of Helen Keller – a blind and deaf icon who trailblazer her way through childhood disability to achieve major academic and philanthropic successes – took to the stage. Julia, Jonathan, Lily, and Jessica presented a compelling account of Helen’s life, combining 19th-century worldbuilding with technological innovations like projection and a live loop pedal to illustrate Helen’s achievements against all odds.

Finally, the space was transformed into the streets of 1920s Coyoacán, Mexico, the place where Frida Kahlo would sustain life-changing injuries that fuelled her art-making journey. Claudia, Lucy, and Sabrina effortlessly wove dance, song, and dialogue to craft an organic portrait of Frida and all she stood for.

Over this course, I learned the value of collaboration and the importance of persevering through group disputes and difficulties to reach a resolution. I had to step outside of my personal goals and interests to realise our shared vision, which ended up being a beautiful melange of our individual talents. Looking back, I’m thrilled to see how vastly different our end products are; a diversity that reflects not only the different group processes and dynamics under which these performances came about, but also the unique skills and passions of my peers that made these pieces so rich, multifaceted, and multi-disciplinary. A big thanks to our Theatre teacher, Ms Esther Lamb, our mentors Ms Sahya Saheki and Ms Amber Virtue, and the whole team behind tech and production!”
