Year 10
Welcome to the new term, and I hope that your child is feeling recharged and energised after the break, ready to take on new challenges and opportunities. During this term, our focus will be on future preparations for senior studies, including readiness and subject selection. We will also be helping Year 10 students to prepare for their examinations and assessments. We believe that with your support, we can help your child achieve their full potential and prepare them for their future academic and career goals.
Academic Assessment Services Test
On May 4, Yr 10 Students will sit a half day of testing provided by Academic Assessment Services from 8.20am – 12.15pm. Students will need to bring a pen and a scientific calculator (not a CAS) to the test. As independent consultants, they specialise in the assessment and analysis of educational performance and progress. Their team of professionals include measurement and curriculum experts, education experts and teachers who will provide guidance in the development of strategic action plans for each student. Parents will be posted a copy of the results.
Year 10 Half-Yearly Examinations
Year 10 Online Minimum Standards Tests and HSC: All My Own Work
Friday 12 May – Tuesday 16 May 2023
The examination timetable will be available to students through their ILearn Pastoral page and will also be found on the Yr 10 Redlands Pulse page.
Students are required to arrive at school no later than 8:15am every day. Examinations will not be delayed for students who arrive late. Attendance will be taken for each examination. Students are not permitted to leave school throughout the examination period. Students will be in an examination, in supervised study or in normal classes at all times during the examination block.
On Tuesday 16 May, students will be granted an early departure once they have completed the All My Own Work Module. Please note that Sport Training attendance is mandatory for Tuesday 16 May.
Students are expected to wear their full school uniform for the examinations.
Some tips for effective study for students:
- Create a study schedule
Creating a schedule can help you to manage your time more effectively and ensure that you have enough time for each subject. This will also help you to avoid last-minute cramming, which is often not very effective.
- Take breaks
It’s important to take breaks during study sessions. This will help to keep your mind fresh and focused. It’s recommended that you take a 5–10-minute break every hour.
- Find a quiet and comfortable study space
Find a space where you can study without distractions. This could be a quiet corner of your house, a library, or a study room.
- Use active learning techniques
Active learning techniques, such as summarising, creating mind maps and teaching others, can help you to retain information better than passive learning techniques like reading and listening.
- Stay organised
Keep your notes and study materials organised. This will help you to find what you need quickly and easily when you need it.
- Test yourself
Testing yourself on what you have learned can help to reinforce the information and identify areas where you may need to review.
- Stay motivated
Keep reminding yourself of your goals and the benefits of achieving them.
- Celebrate your achievements along the way to keep yourself motivated.
- Remember, effective study is not just about how long you study, but how you study.
Term Reminders
Winter Uniform
Students are required to return to school this term in their Winter School uniform including blazers when travelling to and from school. School shoes should be polished, and hair kept tidy, with hair longer than shoulder length worn up and out of the face. Boys’ hair should also be neatly cut and worn as per the guidelines in the Student Planner and published on Pulse.
Supporting Student Management of the School Day
Students are required to arrive at school by 8.10am so they can ready themselves at their locker for a prompt start. Period 1 commences at 8.20am sharp. At this time, all Secondary School students should be in their first lesson of the day. At the conclusion of the school day, all students who are not attending the Study Centre, should make their way directly home. Students should avoid frequenting the local shops and loitering around the local area. Students across Year 7 to 12 have home learning and/or revision and the expectation is that they develop and deepen their learning independently after school. This independent learning may take place at home or at a local library and should occur as early as possible in the evening so that each young person has ample time to eat dinner and rest before retiring at a reasonable bedtime.
SS Counselling Parent Workshop – Tuesday 2 May – LH2.7 and LH2.8
After the success of the first, our counselling team will be hosting their second of four parent workshops this term. Titled ‘Understanding and Responding to Emotions in Adolescence’ the parent session will cover:
- What to expect and develop your understanding of the normal course of adolescent emotional development
- Managing emotions by helping your teen to express their emotions and helping them regain emotional control.
- Recognising unhealthy emotional expression and responding appropriately
Parents are able to register HERE. The workshop runs from 5.30pm – 6.30pm, with nibbles and the chance for parents to chat and connect until 7.00pm.
