Issue 11 2023 Term 2 Week 1 - 27 Apr 2023

From The Principal

I hope you had a joyous Easter and were able to spend quality time with family and friends during these holidays. It was great to see and hear the positive energy of the students as they returned to School yesterday.

On Tuesday morning I attended the Mosman RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Georges Heights, along with Ms Van de Peer and our School Captains, Josie and Dan, who laid a wreath on behalf of Redlands. What always strikes me about the annual Dawn Service is how hundreds of people of all ages and walks of life join together to show our collective respect for those who have served and sacrificed for our great nation.

Yesterday and today, we also held Preparatory, Junior and Secondary School ANZAC Day Services, and I was impressed by the reverence shown by our students as they paused for a few moments of solemnity and reflection. At the Secondary School, I was particularly moved by the stirring rendition of “Remembering a Friend” played by our Advanced Concert Band, the personal and historical reflections from Year 10 students Millie Winton and Jaiden Murphy and the powerful messages on the nature and character of war shared by our guest speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Van de Peer.

As advised in Pulse yesterday, we are pleased to share our new Redlands Statement of Commitment to Child Safeguarding, which has been developed with input from the whole Redlands community: students, pastoral care leaders, staff, Board members and parent representatives.

The Statement highlights our commitment to act in the best interests of students and promote their wellbeing and to provide safe and inclusive environments where our students feel they belong, are supported and can thrive.

This Statement has been developed to implement the 10 Child Safe standards which have recently been introduced by the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian, in the evolution of focus from Child Protection to Child Safeguarding.

You can access our Statement of Commitment to Child Safeguarding HERE.

I wish all the students an enjoyable and successful term ahead and look forward to seeing many of you at the numerous events scheduled over these next few months.

Community Update

Welcome back. The School has quickly sprung back to life with a number of significant student and community events taking place as this short week has unfolded.

ANZAC Day was commemorated this week across the School with several moving services that featured first-hand experiences of those in the service of our country along with some personal and equally impassioned student reflections. Lieutenant Colonel Peter Van de Peer shared his personal experiences of active duty and what ANZAC Day means to him during the Secondary School ANZAC Day service that included a focus on the use and importance of messaging and communication channels to make positive and selfless change. As a school community we gave thanks to the many service men and women who gave their lives, and paused to reflect on those who have served, and are still serving, in times of both peace and conflict.

Redlands is owned and operated by SCECGS (Sydney Church of England Coeducational Grammar School) Redlands Limited; a public company limited by guarantee. We are fortunate to have a dedicated, passionate and diversely experienced Board who effectively represent and promote the interests of the School. The Board is responsible for setting and reviewing the strategic direction of the School as well as monitoring the implementation of that strategy by management. The Board meets each month and works closely to support the School Executive and management. Last night the Annual General Meeting of Redlands took place where our Chair of the School Board, Principal and Chief Financial Officer presented a positive and engaging account of our progress, achievements and accounts. More information on the governance of Redlands can be found here.

A reminder to save the date for the Redlands Gala Ball being held on Saturday 12 August at the Fullerton Hotel in the city. We look forward to welcoming parents and carers, staff, alumni and friends to this highly anticipated event that includes a three-course dinner with fine wine, live entertainment, online and live auctions and raffles, along with a live band. Thank you to the passionate organising committee for pulling this extraordinary event together and to members of our wider community for your support in the donation of prizes and sponsorship for this major fundraising event. Tickets will be on sale shortly.

It’s always a pleasure to hear what our well-travelled alumni community have been up to, and this week we feature a postcard from Abby Goodwin (RL 2019) who reports in from New York where she is studying Strategic Design and Management specialising in producing and directing. For more information on Abby’s amazing work along with other Alumni and Foundation Office news, please visit our Foundation section.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Foundation

A very warm welcome to Term 2! I hope all our families had a relaxing Easter break and managed to have some downtime after a very busy term.

I enjoyed a few days away with my family and friends in Fingal Bay, Port Stephens which we like for its fabulous coastline, greenery and slow pace.

Celebrating 100 Years of Heritage

During the holidays our Property Services team and contractors continued a highly anticipated refurbishment of the top floor of the Liggins Building. This included the Common Room, which will become the new centrepiece for displaying and celebrating our School’s rich 140-year history, while continuing to be a special space in which we gather as a community for events and reunions.

A treasure trove of memories, the Liggins Building is the single surviving element of our School grounds linking 100 years of Redlanders, through many generations to our current students today. The Liggins Building, originally known as Liggins House, opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. First a boarding house, then kitchen, art room, laboratory, and pottery workshop, during WWII, it even housed the School’s bomb shelter. It is currently home to our vibrant Languages classrooms and Staff Common Room.

A huge thank you to all families who contributed towards the Liggins Restoration Appeal supporting this important refurbishment. There is still an Opportunity for Family Plaques. Please visit HERE for further details or contact me directly.

Legacy Gift Update

A highly anticipated ping-pong table, which was donated by the Class of 2020 as part of their Legacy Gift, has arrived over these holidays. It will be available for students and staff at designated times for recreation and wellbeing

Thank you Class of 2020 and the legacy gift team for your efforts!

Inspired by the huge Success of the ‘Dunk Tank’ at the Autumn Fair, the Class of 2023 continue to plan more initiatives to support their Legacy Gift campaign for 2023.

Redlands Gala Ball – Bookings Open Next Week!

This highly anticipated event, open to all Redlands parents, friends and alumni will take place on Saturday 12 August. It is always a sell-out event so get your tickets now! Thank you to all members of our community who donated prizes and secured sponsorship. Your support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to celebrating with members of our Community at what promises to be another fabulous event!

Postcard from Abby Goodin RL 2019

Congratulations to Abby Goodin who graduated Redlands in 2019. Since then, she has commenced studies at Parsons School of Design in New York City in Strategic Design and Management (BBA), specialising in producing and directing.

We are delighted to share that her short film, Aftermath, which she executive produced, and which was written and directed by activist and best-selling author Chessy Prout was selected for the Athena Film Festival held earlier this month. The festival celebrates the growth and empowerment of women in the film industry and it was a great honour for Abby to be selected. “I would really love to share this important piece of work with the Redlands community that supported the start of my career.” Among the cocurricular activities Abby participated in during her time at Redlands were the School Musical, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Advanced Choir, Theatresports, Gala Arts, Vocal Competition and the Drama Competition.

Synopsis: Aftermath

Aftermath, based on the events detailed in Chessy Prout’s best-selling memoir I Have the Right to: A High School Survivor’s Story of Sexual Assault, Justice, and Hope outlines the events that took place after the sexual assault of a minor in an elite boarding school. The short film follows the victim’s family and raises awareness on how sexual assault, in our limited cultural understanding of how to discuss it and nurture healing conversations around it, impacts not just the victim but their family, their community dynamics, and ultimately society at large.”

If there are any students with interests in production, film, theatre, directing, arts administration or who have any interest in pursuing tertiary study in the USA, Abby would be happy to connect with them. Please email alumni@redlands.nsw.edu.au for more information.

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by an RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks.

Next week’s walk on Wed 3 May will be from Harbord Diggers to Dee Why Headland. Meet at Harbord Diggers, Lumsdaine Dr at 8.40am.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie Kimber or call 0406 691 533.

Book Club

Come along and enjoy the lively conversation of other Redlands parents from all around the world with a common love of reading. The Book Club meets twice each school term, rotating among members’ homes. There is also an annual visit to Sunday Writer’s festival (May) and sometimes to movies that are tied in with a book discussion.

  1. Books and timing for next two meetings

To accommodate the availability of our next book champion, we will have a shorter period between our next two meetings (a 4-5 week gap). Given this, you may want to get an early jump on the second book as well.  The following are the details of the next two books and expected timing.

  1. Next book and meeting:
  • Book – Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.
  • Meeting – Week of 15 May.  Date TBC, in the evening.
  1. Second book of Term 2:
  • Book – The Familiars by Stacey Halls.
  • Meeting – Week of either 12 June or 19 June. Date TBC, in the morning/daytime.
  1. Hosts needed!

It would be great if we could get a couple volunteers to host our next two meetings.  If you would be happy to host a meeting, or if you might be interested but have concerns about what’s involved, please contact Monica Gessner or Sabiha Naqvi to have a chat.

Also, if you would be happy to host a meeting in the future, but are just not available to do so in May/June, please let us know as well! We still have four more meetings in the second half of the year to organise!

Books planned for Term 3 are: The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley and BABEL by R.F. Kuang.

Gearing up for an Awesome Term 2

It was wonderful to see students back on campus yesterday for the commencement of Term 2. We began the day with tutor time, reconnecting and ensuring that all of the little things were in place for the start of a new term. From my conversations with many of the students, it sounds like there were a diverse range of experiences enjoyed over the Easter break.

Mr Corcoran and I attended the ANZAC Day Dawn service with our School Captains Josie and Dan. It was once more a wonderful commencement to the term to lead the Secondary School for the ANZAC Day Assembly held in Dunnet Hall yesterday. Acknowledging and commemorating together as a school community is about learning – and we know that learning sits at the heart of what we do each day. We took the opportunity to reflect and to solemnly recall those we have lost in war and conflict. Briefly, I spoke to the students about how this Anzac Day also comes at a time of national reflection over Australia’s painful history with its treatment of First Nations peoples. Interestingly, as part of this, the Australian War Memorial is signalling a commitment to include ‘proper recognition of the frontier conflict’ in its current renovation and expansion. I felt this was important to mention, given our experiences of connecting with country, and our School’s privilege in being able to share and experience the lives of First Nations peoples, in trips like the recent one undertaken by a group of Yr 10 and 11 students and the upcoming trip to Arnhem Land which Yr 9 attend in Week 6 of this term.

As part of our ANZAC Day assembly, Yr 10 students Millie Winton and Jaiden Murphy shared their reflections on the ANZAC spirit, connecting us to their ancestors and supporting the students to consider the ANZAC legacy in their own lives.

‘They have taught us, inspired us, and made us think in particular about the meaning of ‘mateship’.’

I would like to thank all of the students who made the ANZAC Day Assembly a powerful experience.

Reflections on Term 1 and the Easter Break

North Sydney Student Forum – Yr 10 student Krishna Gupta and Yr 11 student Amelia Barter attended this event which gave them the opportunity to share their perspectives on the issues important to them. They shared their reflections on the issues of cybersecurity in schools and standardising the products/services that students use in class. Both students welcomed the opportunity to explore issues related to climate change, transport, mental health, and artificial intelligence. They felt the experience extended their understanding about changes they can make collectively as a community.

Melbourne University Trip – Redlands Careers and University Advisors Ms Justine Fowler and Ms Clare Hurst, along with Yr 12 Year Advisor Mr Nick Walker accompanied a group of 21 Yr 11 and 12 students to Melbourne in the Easter holiday break. This was a fantastic opportunity to visit Melbourne University, RMIT and to tour three of Melbourne University’s residential colleges.

This experience provided the students the chance to be better informed when making decisions about their post-school decisions. One of the highlights was talking to Redlands Alumni currently studying in Melbourne and hearing about their experiences. Our Yr 12s in particular appreciated being able to speak to students they knew from the class of 2022. They also appreciated Melbourne culture by visiting the Melbourne Comedy Festival and consumed some fairly excellent pastries from a laneway cafe. Ultimately, the  experience gave students the opportunity to step up and gain the independence that is required when moving out of home to a new city. Congratulations to Anneka Steele who navigated the whole group on the tram from our hotel to Ormond College! In the photo below, our current senior students pose with Alumni from recent years- a lovely opportunity to reconnect and envision the future.

Australian Junior Athletics Championships Achievements

Year 12

HSC and IB Half Yearly Assessments

Good luck to all the HSC and IB student completing their Half Yearly Assessments this week and next.  For Yr 12 to perform at their best, they will need regular and adequate sleep, a healthy diet, daily exercise and regular reassurance from parents that their success in life does not depend on their final mark. Yr 12 may experience high levels of anxiety and depression during this time, so it is important that their mental health is looked after as well as their physical health. Yr 12 should do plenty of practice exams, focussing on questions they don’t understand and always getting feedback from teachers. Parents should try not worry if they feel their child isn’t studying enough. Sometimes students need to experience the consequences of their choices as they do not have the maturity to associate effort with outcome.

In regards to attendance during the Half Yearly assessment period, HSC students will be expected to come to school every day and will undertake their assessments during their regular timetable. IB students will just need to come onto the Senior Campus for their assessments. HSC students will be participating in quiet study time during Tutor Time which will assist students with preparing for their Half Yearly Assessment tasks.

HSC/IB students participating in Winter Rep sports will be required to attend all training sessions and competitions during the Half Yearly Assessment period. Maintaining a balance outside the assessment and exam period is very important for Yr 12, to allow them to rest and refocus and connect with peers.

Finally, all of Yr 12 will need to wear their full school Winter Uniform throughout the Half Yearly Assessment period. Yr 12 Jerseys will need to be worn under their blazers.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Ora Bella Cornelius and her Acro team who won a bronze medal at the Vegas Acro Cup which was held in Las Vegas over the holidays.

  • Corey Twining (Captain)
  • Lachlan Binnekamp
  • Finn Woodward
  • Keian Murphy
  • Ethan McFarlane
  • Oliver Chambers Lee
  • Xavier Reid

Welcome Back!

While the last two weeks may have looked like rest, sleep and relaxation for many students and their families, some students were restoring their energy through various work experiences, university trips, cultural immersion experiences or sport-related programs. Hopefully, however your teens spent their break, they felt energised and ready to begin classes this week. While Yr 11 students did seem tired returning yesterday, the buzz quickly picked up as students saw one another and began their classes, clubs and activities throughout the day.

Students participated in the Anzac Day service on their first day back. Further information regarding our incredible speakers and messages of the day is included in the Head of Secondary School section. We had several Yr 11 students participating in the day. Indi Hindmarsh delivered the Opening Prayer, Mikaela Sanger Larsson led a reading, Halcyon Hunt and Sholto Mirrlees-Black led the National Anthem and School Hymn, respectively, Thomas Jackson and Jack Stevens were wreath bearers and Luca Solgaard was a candle bearer. Will Howard played The Last Post and the Advanced Concert Band played beautifully throughout the assembly. As this was a formal assembly, it was wonderful to see the many ways each student contributed to the overall assembly and they did an incredible job.

Yr 11 students are also filling in for Gate Duty as Yr 12 Half-Yearly Examinations are taking place. A huge Thank You to all Yr 11 students who have put their hand up already for the opportunity for leadership and community involvement as they welcome students to campus in the morning or wish them a fantastic afternoon as students leave in the afternoon. Students already signed up to help these first two weeks include: Liam McFarlane, Hugo Little, Ruby Voyce, Antonia Morgan, Winter Penney, Anabelle Cullen, Will Howard, Melinda Wright, Sunny Ho, Jaiden Confessore, Alfie Leach, Noah Berbic, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Scarlett Meijer, Isla Dawson-Damer, Conor Petersen, Charlie Hugman, Ahnu Guan, Kabir Yohannan, Olive Scown, Caitlin Preece, Oolan Margon, Charlie Parker, Tristan Wong, Christopher Szeto, Anna Otto, Ella Smith, Sophia Rolon, Lachlan Collyer, Jack Keogh, Emma Noes, Daisy Thomas, River Stefanovic, Scarlett Thorp, Mikaela Sanger Larsson, Zara Naismith, Harry Winder, Miles Eden, Apoorv Pilani, Lockelyn Kraus, Alex Tanner, Chloe Auyeung, Indi Hindmarsh, Summer-Eve Smyth, Charli Waterland and Zac Creighton.

Next week, the Yr 11 Year Meeting will be student-led and allow for the sharing of the many unique experiences that students have engaged in recent weeks.

Through Redlands, the following students embarked on a cultural immersion trip to Arnhem Land:

Sophia Rolon, Charlotte Hugman, Alfie Leach, Antonia Morgan, Conor Ikin, Hamish Campbell, Marcus Cooper-Hor, Melinda Wright and Sholto Mirrlees-Black.

Also through Redlands, the following students engaged in an intense two-day trip to the University of Melbourne: Anneka Steele, Frederick Yates, William Algar, William Andrew, Ahnu Guan, Andrew Kinghorn, Janes Stuart, Charlotte Wrigglesworth and Annie Zhang.

Further reflections of these programs and more will be included in next week’s Note Day.

We warmly welcome all students and their families back to Term 2 and we look forward to an exciting 8.5 weeks ahead!

SS Counselling Parent Workshop – Tuesday 2 May – LH2.7 and LH2.8

After the success of the first, our counselling team will be hosting their second of four parent workshops this term. Titled ‘Understanding and Responding to Emotions in Adolescence’ the parent session will cover:

  • What to expect and develop your understanding of the normal course of adolescent emotional development
  • Managing emotions by helping your teen to express their emotions and helping them regain emotional control
  • Recognising unhealthy emotional expression and responding appropriately

Uniform Reminder

The cohort is looking very sharp as they returned this week in Winter Uniform. A few reminders include:

  • Navy Blue tights to be worn with skirts in Yr 11.
  • Skirts must be knee length. Students have until Monday to hem their skirts appropriately.
  • Shirts must be tucked in throughout the day. During Recess and Lunch, this is not enforced while students are playing games. However, students are expected to sort their uniform as they leave Recess and Lunch and begin to prepare for class.
  • Gum is not allowed to be chewed throughout the day.
  • School bags should not be with students throughout the day. They are brought to school and should be kept in lockers between 8:20am and 3:20pm.

This presentation reviews and builds upon the practical strategies introduced in the Year 10 session. Information on cannabis will be provided, once again focusing on ‘positive norms’ i.e., most young people do not use the drug and fewer teens are using it than in the past. Potential cannabis-related harms, with an emphasis on mental health will be discussed, as well as some of the possible warning signs that could indicate a person may be experiencing problems with their cannabis use. An update on vaping and e-cigarettes will also be provided. Finally, the impact of alcohol on the adolescent brain will be discussed, highlighting the potential risks of drinking during the teen years.

Students are expected to wear their full school uniform for the examinations.

Some tips for effective study for students:

  • Create a study schedule

Creating a schedule can help you to manage your time more effectively and ensure that you have enough time for each subject. This will also help you to avoid last-minute cramming, which is often not very effective.

  • Take breaks

It’s important to take breaks during study sessions. This will help to keep your mind fresh and focused. It’s recommended that you take a 5–10-minute break every hour.

  • Find a quiet and comfortable study space

Find a space where you can study without distractions. This could be a quiet corner of your house, a library, or a study room.

  • Use active learning techniques

Active learning techniques, such as summarising, creating mind maps and teaching others, can help you to retain information better than passive learning techniques like reading and listening.

  • Stay organised

Keep your notes and study materials organised. This will help you to find what you need quickly and easily when you need it.

  • Test yourself

Testing yourself on what you have learned can help to reinforce the information and identify areas where you may need to review.

  • Stay motivated

Keep reminding yourself of your goals and the benefits of achieving them.

  • Celebrate your achievements along the way to keep yourself motivated.
  • Remember, effective study is not just about how long you study, but how you study.

Term Reminders

Winter Uniform

Students are required to return to school this term in their Winter School uniform including blazers when travelling to and from school. School shoes should be polished, and hair kept tidy, with hair longer than shoulder length worn up and out of the face. Boys’ hair should also be neatly cut and worn as per the guidelines in the Student Planner and published on Pulse.

Supporting Student Management of the School Day

Students are required to arrive at school by 8.10am so they can ready themselves at their locker for a prompt start. Period 1 commences at 8.20am sharp. At this time, all Secondary School students should be in their first lesson of the day. At the conclusion of the school day, all students who are not attending the Study Centre, should make their way directly home. Year 8

Welcome Back!

It was wonderful to see Yr 8 students back on Wednesday this week. There were lots of smiles, everyone looked excellent in their winter uniform and all haircuts were appropriate and well-styled.

I am hopeful that the break provided some time for rest and reflection as we move into Term 2 as a new set of goals are set for navigating the middle of the academic year.

ANZAC Day Ceremony

On Wednesday morning, students from Yrs 7 – 11 acknowledged the contributions of those who served and currently serve in the armed forces in a special ceremony in Dunnet Hall.

Thank you to Yr 8 student Alice Franceschi who beautifully read the ‘Prayer for Peace’ as part of the reflections during the ceremony.

In Your Skin

Over the next three weeks Yr 8 students will be taking part in the In Your Skin program created by Dr Tessa Opie. This program is designed to promote positive language and culture around sexuality and encourage positive, healthy relationships.

The website for the external provider is available here if you are interested.

During Tutor Time there will be a number of lead-in sessions which challenge students’ perceptions of the language they use to describe sexuality and relationships. There will then be a half-day workshop on Thursday 11th May led by In Your Skin.

Upcoming Events

We have a number of significant events during the term which include:

  • Week 3 – Thursday 11 May – In Your Skin
  • Week 4 – 5 – Coaching Conversations
  • Week 7 – Thursday 8 June – Athletics Carnival

Year 7

Week 1 – We Survived and Thrived in Term 1, so bring on Term 2!

Welcome back to another action-packed term at Redlands! It was wonderful to see everyone returning with smiling faces, eager to start the term with their front foot forward. Students looked resplendent in their crisp winter uniforms with blazers adding a touch of class.

Please do remember that blazers need to be worn throughout the winter terms. For further clarity on all uniform requirements, please review the Secondary School information documents found on our Yr 7 page on Pulse.

On Wednesday, we commenced Term 2 with a Tutor session where student connections were encouraged and many a holiday story was shared. Tutors enthusiastically welcomed students back to Redlands, encouraging them to continue to build on their efforts and successes from Term 1.

Following this, the Secondary School moved to Dunnet Hall for their annual Anzac Day service. Yr 7 demonstrated excellent behaviour, respectfully listening to the important messages of courage, camaraderie and mateship shared by our presenters. Thank you and well done to Lachlan Carter who confidently opened proceedings by offering the acknowledgement of country in front of the whole Secondary School.

The Anzac Day service allows the school to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who have engaged in the armed forces to defend Australia and support values of justice, fairness and equality across the globe. Mrs Van de Peer’s own brother, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Van de Peer, offered powerful reflections on the role of communications technology in modern warfare, encouraging students to be aware of how modern conflicts like that in Ukraine have demonstrated a shift in the weaponry of war to be increasingly information based. It was an important provocation towards students considering the impacts of social media technologies in their modern world. I encourage you to read the full account of the ceremony on Pulse.

After the service, students fell back into the rhythm of the regular school timetable, now with bells returned to signal class time – something missing last term due to a lightning strike! This helped all students get to their first class in a timely fashion.

Term 2 might be a short term, but it will no doubt be jam-packed. Already, students have begun ‘Growth Conversation’ in Tutor time, seeking to reflect on their Term 1 performance and develop goals to achieve their best this term. The Winter Sport season is also in full swing with regular training commencing on Thursday afternoon and representative games occurring this weekend.

Mrs Adams and I are looking forward to seeing the heights to which Yr 7 will soar this term.

Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 2: Parent Presentation: Understanding and Responding to Emotions in Adolescents for Parents and Carers of students in Years 7-12 (Tuesday 2/5)

See below for more information.

  • Week 3: Yr 7 and 8 Relationships and Sexuality program (Thursday 11/5)

ANZAC Service

On Tuesday, I attended the Dawn Service at George’s Heights Parade Ground, a local service that I have attended for many years. As is always the case, I enjoyed seeing many of our school community there too where Redlands laid a wreath of remembrance.

Today, the Junior School recognised and honoured ANZAC Day, a significant day in the history of Australia and New Zealand. For the students, the assembly also provided an opportunity to learn about our history and to gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by those who fought for our country. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the significance of the day, to understand the impact that war has had on society, and to appreciate the importance of peace.

My thanks to Ms Wilson, Ms Roberts and Ms Moses for organising and coordinating this poignant remembrance service for the Junior School today.

Comfortable being Uncomfortable

Growing up in England, I loved school all that it had to offer. Generally, learning came pretty easy to me through my primary years but it took me a while to adjust to my time in secondary school where, in many ways, I was being challenged in my learning for the first time. Having not been familiar with finding things harder to understand, I took fewer risks in my learning than others, preferring to stay in my comfort zone. That was until my Yr 8 Maths teacher took some time to give me the confidence to take risks and even make mistakes in my learning. I have not needed reminding of this significance in my learning since.

I often talk to the students (and my own children) about the growth that takes place when we challenge ourselves in a place beyond our comfort zone. Being ‘comfortable being uncomfortable’ is an expression I often use with staff as well as students, acknowledging that learning should be fun and engaging but it should also not be easy. Part of our roles as educators is to challenge the students to a point where thinking is a key part of the process of learning. As uncomfortable as it might make us feel, whether it is trying to understand the complexities of algebra, trying a new sport or learning to ride a bike, making mistakes but learning from them, can be when our most powerful learning takes place.

The Sketchnote below, drawn by Sylvia Duckworth, visually summarises an article by Oscar Nowik on this topic which I will share with the students in our next assembly but I also wanted to share with parents.

Perhaps, if you are in a situation where this language can support your child, do consider using it as it will support the growth mindset language we are using with the students at school which, in many ways will be a more significant life skill than the content of the curriculum alone. We look forward to supporting each student take these steps forward this term.

Yr 6 Camp (1-5 May)

We are looking forward to our Yr 6 cohort enjoying their annual camp next week in Canberra, which balances some wonderful outdoor educational experiences with civics education aligned with the year group’s current studies on democracy and government.

Yr 6 families should have received a detailed second letter on Monday from Mrs Robinson outlining and reminding of logistics and I look forward to joining the group for two days during their time away, when I will also report back.

Student Medications on Yr 6 and Yr 4 Camp

If your child/ren requires medication (Prescribed or OTC) on camp, you will need to complete a Medical Authority Form located on Pulse HERE.

This form will need to be returned to Mr Atkins ASAP. Students should not be arriving to camp without a completed MAF if they require medication.

Please contact our Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Atkins, for any other questions via email.

Yrs 5 and 6 Oxford University Computational Challenge Opportunity

Redlands is excited to again offer the opportunity for Yrs 5 and 6 students who are experienced with Blockly coding, computational thinking and problem-solving, to enter Round One of the global Oxford University Computational Challenge (OUCC), which will be held on Thursday 25 May here at Redlands.

Welcome to Term 2

So lovely to see all our returning students yesterday and exciting to welcome new faces and families to our Redlands family. Term 2 will, as always, be filled with engaging, challenging and differentiated learning experiences. If you would like to know more about what your child will be learning, investigating, and exploring in classes, I encourage you to read the relevant curriculum handbook found on Pulse and read the Welcome to Term 2 grade letters.

This term the school values of respect and responsibility will be a focus in our Prep community. It is all too easy to just say those words and to have children recite them when discussing school values, it is another to teach, model and live these values daily in and outside of the classroom. To help our students understand and live the values of respect and responsibility, we will be encouraging, highlighting, and modelling good manners, respectful conversations, and friendships. At Redlands we are proud of our connection with the community, so I ask for your partnership in guiding our children to live and understand these values and to extend this learning at home.

A big thank you to parents and carers who volunteered their time last term in classes. Your help has been so appreciated by the staff and by our children who love spending time with you. If you would like to volunteer even 30 minutes once a week, please contact your class teacher directly to organise a time that works for you.

Please find the key events for Term 2 below. As always, we will notify you if there are changes to these dates.

Lest We Forget

The Prep School gathered yesterday to remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. As you can appreciate, with our youngest of learners we must be mindful of how we discuss wars.

Yesterday we talked about what ANZAC Day means by reflecting upon how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful country. We also discussed how we appreciate all those soldiers in the past who have helped make it such a wonderful country to live in for us.

Our students made the connection of understanding to ANZAC Day by discussing the symbols of poppies, Anzac biscuits and laying of wreaths It was a lovely inclusive assembly and I was very proud of how respectful our students were in discussing events of the past.

Congratulations OOSH

Last term our K-6 OOSH service was evaluated by ACECQA ((Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority). After a rigorous two-day schedule of observations, discussions with staff and programming review, Redlands OOSH received outstanding ratings and feedback in all 7 Quality Areas.

A huge amount of preparation and documentation went into preparing for this evaluation and we thank Miss Ana and the OOSH team for all their dedication to the OOSH program.

Term 2 Wellbeing Lunchtime Clubs

Ms Fiebiger has put together another term of fun and interesting lunchtime activities for our Prep students to access, which are open to all Prep students throughout the week. Some of our activities are capped at 20 due to accessibility of resources and others can accommodate up to 30 children. Can I please encourage you to talk to your child about what they might like to try throughout the term.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Welcome Back

We hope all of our families had a wonderful Easter break, sharing some time to relax, rejuvenate and spent time with loved ones. We look forward to a busy and productive term ahead.

Independence

At Redlands House we encourage strongly encourage independence. We love seeing the children carry their own bags, pack away their belongings and look after their food containers. As children grow and develop, they become more able to do things for themselves, to express themselves and to explore their world independently. Independence contributes to the development of self-esteem, identity and wellbeing. Doing something for yourself produces a powerful sense of achievement and success. When children have opportunities to make choices, to attempt tasks for themselves, and to take on increasing responsibilities, their sense of themselves as competent members of society grows.

Illness

As the cooler weather of winter approaches, and we come into cold and flu season, we encourage you to please keep your child(ren) at home if they are unwell. This prevents the spread of infection amongst the children and staff. If your child is absent, could you please send an email to Mrs Tait  or Mrs Huon to advise of the absence. Thank you.

Toys at Preschool

We are blessed with beautiful resources at Redlands House, so we encourage the children to please leave toys at home. They can become lost or broken whilst at Preschool. If your child has a special item to share for ‘News’, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning. We have discussed this matter with the children. We thank you for your support with this.

Junior Sport

Welcome back to all families and students I hope you and your family enjoyed the Easter break. We commenced our Winter Sport Season for Term 2 for our Representative Sports program along with our Non-Representative Wednesday Sport Program this week with the first round of matches this Saturday 29 April. At our assembly I reminded our students about the three ‘rights’ and how they impact upon their involvement in Redlands Sport. Students are asked to adhere to these;

  • Right place
  • Right time
  • Right equipment

It may be worth opening up some discussion on how these can be followed at home in preparation for Wednesday and Saturday sport. Hearing “my mum or dad didn’t pack my shin pads” or “I don’t know what time my game is” is not what we are trying to instil in students as they prepare for Winter sport.

Building students’ responsibility will make for a much more pleasant experience for all. If they ask you questions about their sport or one of our carnivals, direct them to the Sport page on Redlands Pulse.

Term 2 Sport Information Package

This was sent out to all families on Monday this week and provides an overall view of the term ahead. Please refer to this document if you have any questions relating to the term ahead. This can also be found on pulse.

Cross Country Carnival The Cross Country Carnival which will take place on Wednesday 17 May for all Junior School students. The carnival will be held at St Leonards Park, St Leonards. We will have full access to the entire Park and students will enjoy an open and challenging course. Each student will complete the course twice (two laps) to achieve 2.0km total distance.

Our aim is for this to be a fun experience for everyone on the day but also provide a great experience and challenge for those aiming to progress to HICES and CIS where the courses present many different challenges. Upon arrival at the venues students in each grade will be divided into two groups (Boys Championship Race and a Girls Championship Race) which will run as separate events.

After the event the result will be sorted into age groups with the top 5 runners in boys and the top 5 runners in girls in each age group will make up the Redlands team that will participate at the HICES Carnival in Bathurst on the 23 May.

Please refer to our Cross-Country Carnival page on Pulse for all information relating to our 3rd major carnival this year

CIS Touch Trials

Congratulations to the following students who were selected by their coaches to attend the CIS Touch Football Trials at Penrith yesterday. While they were not successful in achieving a place in the team (10 selected out of 150 trialists) they had a great experience with Jenna and Piper making it down to the final stage of trials in a possible versus probable match. Well done Aidan, Lachlan, Henry, Jenna and Piper.

Updated Sport Calendar

The updated sport calendar for Term 2 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2023 JS Sport Calendar

Redlands App – communication

In Term 2, all Redlands Sport Activities will be through Pulse and the Redlands App. Here you will be able to see all activities, teams and groups your child is part of, all scheduled lessons and locations and receive instant push notifications for any changes or cancellations.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Representative Sport Team Movement

In regard to representative sport and the movement of players across ability based teams, it is transparent for all parties as unexplained team movements sometimes cause unnecessary stress. At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY              in direct comparison to other students across the sport

ATTENDANCE    any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE          this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Have a great term.

Music

Welcome to Term 2!

Senior Instrumental and Vocal Competitions; the Junior Campus Choral Celebration; Lunchtime Recitals & Studio Concerts; a Yr 9 trip to the Opera House; HICES Auditions; the Platinum Lunch; Foundation Day Assembly; performances at North Sydney Council Chambers AND the magnificent Senior Music Festival! This term is set to be another full and inspiring one for all our Redlands musicians from P-12!

What a joy it is to pursue the discipline of making music – an endeavour with proven social-emotional outcomes as well as being innately supportive of our brain’s development for other complex tasks.  Renowned researcher, Dr Anita Collins gives a great Ted-talk on this topic, stating the case for Music Education and describing how “learning to play music is the neurological equivalent of a full-body workout”.

Whether you’re driving your child to an early morning rehearsal, hearing the same song or scale practised over and over, or fostering their love of music by taking them to concerts or asking about their goals – we are so grateful for the school/home partnership that sees our Redlands students so enriched and ready for their best outcomes in life.

Junior and Senior ANZAC Services – Musical Tributes

On the first day of school, our Advanced Concert Band arrived at school early to prepare for the thoughtful tribute they offered within our ANZAC service yesterday. The Last Post and Reveille were rendered by trumpeters Hugo Baird (Yr 10) and Will Howard (Yr 10), while the official music was led by Sholto Mirrlees-Black (Yr 11), Halcyon Hunt (Yr 11), Oliver Cooke (Yr 10) and Aneke Golowenko (Yr 10). Though Yr 12 were away with Exams, the younger members of our Advanced Concert Band proved their metal and their offering of Remembering a Friend conducted by Mr Mathew Owen, greatly enriched the Secondary School’s reflection time.

Today on the Junior Campus, Junior Voices performed the moving piece called The Last Anzac by Michael Travers. It remembers the lives of all the ANZAC’s who fought on the battlefields of Gallipoli in World War One, but especially the life of the ‘last ANZAC’, Alec Campbell. Born in 1899, Alec signed up for the war when he was only sixteen. When he died in 2002, he was the last link with his part of our Australian history. Thank you to Dr Eskenazi for accompanying Junior Voices and Mr Xu for performing The Last Post and Reveille.

That’s a Wrap! Red Factor 2023

Jumping back to the last day of Term 1, Junior Campus wrapped up on a high note with our annual variety show, Red Factor. These student-directed performances were delightful, and the debut performance of The Redlands Rockers (a.k.a. The Redlands Staff!) saw the crowd go wild! Congratulations and thanks to all participants for sharing your wonderful talents with us!

Senior Instrumental Competition Finals – Monday 22 May 2023

Esteemed international chamber musician and collaborative artist, Dr Theresa Leung is looking forward to joining us in the John Roberts Centre on Friday to adjudicate the finals of our Senior Instrumental Competition for 2023!  Ticketing will be released closer to the date, with 2 free tickets available per performer.

Senior Vocal Competition Auditions – due by Friday 5 May 2023

The Finals of our annual Senior Vocal Competition will be held on Friday 9 June 2023, and will be adjudicated by the inimitable Chloé Zuel – known for her most recent work as Eliza in the original Australian cast of Hamilton. Auditions for these exciting vocal showcase Finals are NOW OPEN for all Senior Campus students, with submissions closing next Friday 5 May 2023.  All pertinent information is on the iLearn Music Department Auditions page.

HICES Auditions

Thank you to the students who applied to attend HICES in August this year. Next Wednesday 3 May 2023, we will be filming your auditions during your regular Choir and Concert Band times. The Music Office will be in touch to confirm these arrangements with you ahead of next Wednesday.

Studio Concerts – Weeks 5 and 6

Did you know that over 480 students each week receive private vocal and instrumental tuition from our expert team of specialists? We are very proud of the opportunities available to our Redlanders, and in support of these lessons, we seek to provide performance opportunities through events, optional exams and elective classes throughout the year. Our Studio Concert Series each semester provides an informal and relaxed opportunity for our developing musicians to share their progress with a supportive audience of family and friends. We look forward to confirming days and times in the weeks ahead, and to throwing our doors wide open to supporters who would like to join us for these informal concerts.

Lunchtime Recital Series

After only half a term at Redlands, our new Resident Associate Artist, Dr Jeremy Eskenazi is working hard to build initiatives that support the development of our young performers. Today saw the inaugural performance in our Thursday Lunchtime Recital Series in the Edwards Auditorium, which will feature our Elective Music students as they build their performance craft ahead of their forthcoming assessments.

Senior Music Festival – Friday 16 June 2022 6pm

While Junior Music Festival is shaping up for our Junior School students, our flagship cocurricular Music showcase for the Senior Campus, the Senior Music Festival is to be held at the Concourse Theatre in Chatswood – and it is just 7 weeks away! The ‘LIKE A VARIATION’ theme is proving a joy to program and rehearse, and we promise a memorable show you won’t want to miss! A fun twist on the Triple J Radio segment ‘LIKE A VERSION’, students and staff are having fun collaborating and taking well-loved pieces to make them new! Building on the gameshow vibes from 2022, we look forward to a hilarious night. Not just for parents of students in the cocurricular program, but this night of nights is for music-lovers of all ages in our Redlands community from P-12. Ticketing is set to open in Week 3!

Staffing News

Though this week we were sad to say farewell to our Clarinet Tutor and Composition specialist Solomon Frank, we are delighted to welcome Mr Gareth Baard to our team who will take up the reins with Mr Frank’s former clarinet students commencing next week. Our Saxophone specialist, Dr Nicholas Russoniello, is also on staff at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as a Composition lecturer, and he will be taking up Mr Frank’s Composition duties.

In Summary?

We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 2! Remember to check the Pulse MUSIC EVENTS page, to ensure our flagship events and rehearsals are all on the family calendar.

Kind regards,

Amy Richardson
Director of Music
