Summer Sport

Last weekend saw the official beginning of all summer sports. It was fantastic to receive such great feedback from students, parents and coaches across all sports regarding the enjoyment and positive experience people had in the first week of competition. I would like to make special mention of the Touch Football teams who travelled to Bathurst for a highly successful ISA Gala Day competition. All teams played a minimum of two games with some students playing up to four. Our Rowing team has had a very successful pre-season with all Year Groups completing very tough and rigorous training loads to prepare themselves for competition. This culminated in all members of the Rowing program heading to Newcastle to compete in the Hunter Valley Grammar and Newcastle regattas last weekend. Our Rowing team came away with 17 wins, an outstanding achievement for the Redlands Rowing shed.

Last weekend our summer Sports Captains had a chance to formally represent the students as leaders in their given sports. I would like to formally acknowledge them and encourage any student within their respective sport to seek them out and share any experiences or feedback they have about Sport at Redlands. These students have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of Redlands Sport that they would be willing to share with their peers.

Basketball

The Basketball season is now underway. Round 1 was a great round for our girls Basketball teams, coming away with five out of a possible six wins over the weekend. It was a tough Round 1 for our Boys Basketball teams. With our A and B boys teams both moving up a division, all teams played against St Augustine’s who are looking like they will be one of the top schools in the competition. Well done to our 13A boys for a great win. Our C boys teams played against Central Coast B teams which was another tough match up. Congratulations to our 14D and 15D boys teams on two great performances.

Best of luck to all teams as we head into Round 2 this weekend.

Football

The Football AGM will be held on Monday 5 November at 6pm in room L1.2. All parents wishing to be involved in the Friends of Football Committee for the 2019 season are strongly encouraged to attend.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman (Yr 7) and Freya Gait (Yr 7) (pictured L-R: Freya Gait, Jess van Extel (Yr 6) and Eloise Trueman), who are members of the U13 Northern Suburbs and Beaches Indoor Hockey team who took out their Division in the Hunter Cup over the weekend, this is a fantastic achievement and we wish the girls the best of luck in the Indoor Hockey State Cup this weekend. Seb Griffith (Yr 7) was also part of the Hunter Cup over the weekend with his team finishing 2nd overall losing to a strong Newcastle team in the Grand Final. Seb will also be part of the State Championships this weekend.

Rowing

On Saturday 27 October the Rowing program headed off Hunter Valley Grammar School Regatta held in Berry Park (Newcastle). This is the first of our regattas for the new season along with being the first opportunity for our Yr 7 students to experience racing.

The regattas held at Berry Park are an ideal start for our season. Located in the middle of rural farm land, with dairy cows grazing in the paddocks on the opposite side of the river to where we boat from, this is a stress-free picturesque venue that is easy on spectators and competitors alike.

Our older students in Yrs 8 – 11 raced with the Yr 7 students in multiple races, “holding their hands” as they take their first tentative steps into competition, ensuring that they know how to handle the transit to the start, lining up multiple crews at the start line and what type of tempo is required when racing against competition. Across the day our Rowing students represented the School a total of 99 times in different crew combinations from a single sculler through to coxed quads. Racing against adults from local Rowing Clubs along with stiff competition from fellow co-ed schools such as Hunter Valley Grammar School and Newcastle Grammar School, our crews finished with 20 1st places, 20 2nd places and 23 3rd places, with many of our 2nd and 3rd placed crews being beaten by a fellow Redlands crew across the line. This is a remarkable effort by all involved.

Between races, it was impressive to see so many of the students take the opportunity to get in blocks of study in preparation of their exams currently being held this week.

There are too many first placed results to name them all however notable standouts are our Yr 7 students who managed to win a number of events at their first regatta, these include:

WU15 4x+: Charlotte Morrison, Issy Treloar, Alana Mansfield, Audra Olson (Yr 8) and Alex Coney (Yr 10)
WU15 4x+: Taya Garner, Charlotte Perikic, Maia Healey, Sophia Maxwell (Yr 8), Xavier Little (Yr 9)
WD 4x: Charlotte Perikic, Lily Swift, Maya Little, Emily Barrelle (Yr 9) and Tash Richardson (Yr 10)
MU15 4x+: Mitchell Turner, James Ireland, Tobias Bowgerald, Joe Griffiths and Ema Yasumura (Yr 8)
WS1000 4x: Claudia Lalich, Georgia Verschoor, Aysha Sayan, Lily Swift and Camille Ghenzer
MD 4x: Mitchell Turner, James Ireland, Tobias Bowgerald, Ellery Prescott and Ema Yasumura (Yr 8)

A huge thank you to our Friends of Rowing group who organised pizzas for our students to enjoy after boat unloading. After such a long day, this was greatly appreciated!

Touch Football

The Summer Touch Football season kicked off in brilliant fashion over the weekend with a Gala Day in Bathurst hosted by Scots All Saints. It was a wonderful opportunity for all of our teams to show how far they have come through the trial period and these first few weeks of training.

The day kicked off with our 1st VI beating a strong Chevalier side 4-2, some of the combinations that were built over the Summer Pre-Season Camp were put straight into effect with Caroline Bates, Lulu Simpson and Domenica Stuart combining for a wonderful try down the sideline.

Across to the other side of the school, our Junior As put together a fantastic second half effort against Scots All Saints with the combination of Sophia Hill and Ruby Kelly running in three tries between them. A runaway intercept try to Grace Rugge-Price finished the match 5-1 in favour of Redlands.

This Gala Day was designed to be a great way of starting the new ISA Competition and the feedback from all of our athletes was so positive. There were some amazing team efforts with Lily Attard and Madison Hungerford working brilliantly together in our Junior C team and Stella Campbell showed no signs of this being her first season of Touch Football as she ran in an amazing individual try for the Junior Bs.

Special mention must go to Monique Pascoe and Charlie Gregan who played multiple games across the day, combining on multiple occasions and backing up for all of our Senior teams. This type of effort was so helpful to our coaching group on the day, many of whom were trying to balance fatigue in their squads from double up games.

The whole day was a complete success, girls from all teams watching and supporting their peers on other fields. There were some amazing tries from all of our teams, some wonderful defensive efforts across the whole program and to see such a large group of Redlands students representing the school so positively was the most rewarding aspect of the weekend.

Equestrian

Congratulations to Grace O’Toole (Yr 11) and her horse Buddy who were awarded Reserve Champions (2nd Place) in the Unofficial Preliminary Category of the Northside Riding Club Dressage Championships.
