Issue 33 2018 - 01 Nov 2018

From the Principal

We are so fortunate to have a wonderful School community with parents who support our School in so many ways. Last Friday, all of our teachers were delighted with the three delicious morning teas prepared by parents at the Preparatory, Junior and Secondary Schools to celebrate World Teachers’ Day. I sincerely thank all those parents who went to great effort to express a thank you to our teachers in this very thoughtful way and I also thank the Prefects who assisted with the Senior Campus morning tea.

I wish to congratulate Mr Nigel Coutts, Dean of Teaching & Learning P-6, whom the Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales have recognised and presented with a certificate of achievement in recognition of his work leading educators across the State in building a culture of thinking in NSW schools.

My time overseas during the two weeks of the recent school vacation and the first week of term were both enjoyable and fruitful. I attended the first overseas reunion of past Redlands students in more than a decade, which was held in London. Despite it being a very wet day, the spirits of the more than thirty Redlanders who attended was in no way dampened, when we met in an elegant room of the Oriental Club. There was at least one past student from every decade from the 1960s to the present decade. Most are presently studying or working in the UK, but we did have several who were able to join the group from the USA and Europe. The event was organised by our Alumni Manager, Caroline Jane, herself a Redlander (1991) and she was assisted by two Redlanders, Ms Pauline Lyle-Smith (1964) and Mr Michael Compton (2006). It was wonderful to see all the Redlanders of different ages chatting together about the School, their time there and what has been happening in their lives since they left Redlands. Michael Compton, who was one of the two School Captains in his final year reflected on what his time at Redlands has meant to him, and I was able to tell the diverse group of past students a little about what has been happening in the current Redlands. Another happy element of the evening for me was the chance to catch up with a number of Redlanders from my own time as Principal, who are either studying or now working in the UK. The event went longer than expected as there were many who wished to continue their conversations, and there was talk among themselves about holding another gathering next year.

Following that I met with the CEO of a British company regarding a potential new School Information System for Redlands. We visited St Albans School north of London and had a productive meeting with the Head of IT as St Albans changed their SIS several years ago. It was very helpful to discuss with the Head of IT and several other senior staff of St Albans about the strengths of this system, which is being used in other schools in the UK and in international schools around the world, and the challenges which come with the major change programme required in implementing a system like this. I was heartened by what I heard and learned during the afternoon which I spent there, as the St Albans key staff who deal with the various applications for which the SIS provides that one source of truth all spoke positively about the system.

I stayed in St Albans for a couple more days and included a visit to the ancient Roman remains and museum of Verulamium, a very early township during the Roman period occupation of Britain. There is a rich horde of Roman remains, despite it being one of three towns that were burnt to the ground by the forces of Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni tribe. Our Latin students will know about Roman Britain as part of their course centres upon that far-flung part of the Roman Empire and which is contrasted with Roman Egypt, one of the very oldest provinces of the Roman Empire. I took a large number of photographs in the museum and at the excavated site of the nearby Roman theatre in order to pass them on to our Latin teachers and students. I am looking forward to discussing with them how some of these photos might be used for teaching Latin and the history of the Romans, using some of the Harvard-based thinking routines.

This last takes me to the third major part of my travels. Upon advice and thanks to an introduction from Mark Church who works with us as an advisor in growing our culture of thinking, I was warmly welcomed to the American International School in Budapest. I spent two full days at the school in a combination of meetings with the two Heads of Teaching and Learning and the Heads of their three schools (Elementary, Middle and High schools). AISB has been travelling their own journey in creating a culture of thinking. They have been on this journey for a couple of years longer than Redlands. The remainder of my days was spent visiting classes across the school. Teachers were informed that I was visiting and I managed to spend time in about 25 different classrooms while the teachers and students were engaged in their learning. The ‘pay-back’ which was sought from me was a debriefing session they asked me to provide their Executive staff and their Director (Principal) at the end of the second day. There were many similarities between our two schools, even though the schooling structure is a little different from the three sections into which our school is structured. One difference is that all AISB students in Years 11 and 12 study the IB Diploma programme and a similarity is that neither of our schools follows the IB programmes in younger years, although the Harvard model which we are both now using has many connections with the IB programme. There is some excellent teaching and use of the model occurring in the Elementary School and good progress happening within the Middle School, but from what I saw, Redlands is already more advanced in its use of the Harvard approach in the two final years. I have agreed to send them some wall displays of students’ work in our two senior years in return for the many photographs which I took of the classroom walls in the younger years at AISB, which I shall be sharing with our staff. We also had a conversation about more sharing between our two schools going forward, which we both felt would be very helpful.

Urgent Call for Special Provisions Volunteers

Mr Corcoran mentioned at the end of Term 3 that the Learning Plus department is looking for new members to add to our friendly team of volunteers. This team assists Redlands students in Years 7-12 with special provisions for exams and assessments throughout the year. We welcome Prep, Junior and Secondary School parents, grandparents, friends and Redlanders. We are still looking for helpers to assist with examinations occurring next week. If you are able to help, please contact Saralie Pincini at spincini@redlands.nsw.edu.au or on 9968 9854.

Our volunteers respect confidentiality, are reliable, punctual, patient and friendly. Legible handwriting is a bonus. If this describes you, please come and join our team. You can choose the exams and assessments for the subjects and years in which you are interested to suit your schedule. No subject specific knowledge is required; you are simply there to read and/or write what the student dictates, and to regulate the time. Bad spelling? No problem – spelling is ignored when there’s a writer. Illegible handwriting? You could be a reader (no writing required) or supervise time for a student or a small group. With your help a student can achieve his or her potential, and you will gain an additional perspective of Redlands. Our students are very appreciative of the support they are given.

Staffing Update

While later in the term I will send further communication of staffing changes for 2019, I wanted to take this moment to acknowledge two teachers. After 20 years of service to Redlands, Mrs Wendy Hollings will be retiring at the end of the year. A Redlander herself, Mrs Hollings has had a variety of positions across the previous Middle School, the Junior School and now the Secondary School, where she is currently Dean of Administration. Her friendly and professional manner has endeared her to many staff, parents and students over her time at Redlands, and she will be missed. We will advertise for her current position in the coming weeks.

In addition, Mrs Barbara Potter will be retiring at the end of this year. Mrs Potter joined the Mathematics Department in 2015 after a long and distinguished career teaching Mathematics at a number of different schools including Ascham and International Grammar School. She has been a valued Maths teacher at Redlands, teaching a wide range of classes and often getting the best out of her students. We have hired Ms Eleanor Dalton to join the Maths Department next year. Ms Dalton has been teaching Maths at Newington and also has previous experience teaching Maths in the UK. We will properly farewell both Mrs Hollings and Mrs Potter in various ways at the end of the year.

Yr 7-10 Yearly Examinations

This week, students in Yrs 7 and 8 have been sitting their Yearly Examinations and next week, students in Yrs 9 and 10 will be doing the same. Assessments such as these are an important tool in assessing students’ learning and we would hope all students prepare and revise accordingly so that they are giving their very best effort and are achieving their own personal bests. However, it is also important that students and parents see these examinations as just one in a number of different assessments of student learning over the course of the year. The final results and marks are not nearly as important as the habits of and approaches towards learning that students have developed in the preparation for these examinations or will further develop in the reflection and evaluation of their learning after these assessments so that they can best develop strategies for future improvement. In my opening assembly address, I spoke to the students about having a “growth mindset” towards their learning at school and I hope students in Yrs 7-10 put into practice this approach over the coming weeks.

Yr 12 Leadership Training

Over the past two days we have been holding leadership training sessions for many of our incoming Yr 12 student leaders. On Wednesday 31 October, our new Yr 12 Prefects spent the day at Westpac’s Barangaroo offices partaking in leadership workshops. Jeff Hurdis, Westpac’s State General Manager, initially welcomed us to Westpac and shared some of his insights around leadership, and then Sarah Butler, a Partner and Senior Advisor with PwC, as well as a current Redlands parent, shared some of her experiences and advice around leadership. For the rest of the day, Bel Yorston, from yLead led the students through a number of team building and reflection activities to prepare for the year ahead. Today, Bel from yLead, returned to the Campus to work with the various Captains of Activities and their faculty advisors in leadership training and planning for the year.

I thought I would share some of Sarah Butler’s “Top Ten Tips” for leadership as they pertain to all facets of leadership both in and out of school. They are:

  • Have a clear vision, with goals and priorities
  • Have strong underlying values
  • Make decisions and take accountability
  • Be creative and innovative
  • Have strong and clear communication
  • Inspire other with passion and commitment
  • Remain positive and be resilient
  • Be sure to collaborate and delegate
  • Listen more and talk less
  • Develop self-awareness and learn from mistakes

Canteen Bandanna Day

Last Friday 26 October, the Secondary School was awash with bright colours as many staff and students were wearing bandannas that they bought throughout the week as part of CanTeen’s Bandanna Day. We raised $1455 which goes to CanTeen to provide many different support services for young people aged 12-25 who have been affected by cancer. It was great to see the new Yr 12 Prefects, led by our Service Captains Lachlan van der Pluijm and Isabel Binnekamp, really hit the ground running with their efforts towards this event and the Teacher Appreciation Morning Tea last week, as well.

Teacher Appreciation Morning Tea

On behalf of the Secondary School teachers and staff, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many parents and students who assisted in organising the Appreciation Morning Tea last Friday. Your gestures of gratitude meant so much to so many people who work in the Secondary School and was just a further illustration of the wonderful sense of community and partnership that we have here at Redlands.

Service

Yr 7 Service Learning

We will be hosting a visit from Assistance Dogs Australia in Week 5 for our students to gain some understanding of the extensive training program assistance dogs undertake and see the valuable contribution these dogs make, whether it is providing companionship, or supporting people with disabilities.

It costs over $35,000 to fully train an assistance dog so over the next few weeks our students will be participating in a range of fun activities to raise funds so that we can make a small contribution to this process.

Yr 10 Service Learning

Also in Week 5, students in Yr 10 will be coming back to further examine our Service Learning theme of homelessness. Students will have an opportunity to find out about the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society and in particular the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. Redlands teachers and students in Yr 11 are involved in assisting with the breakfast service at Matthew Talbot every week throughout the year. This term, students in Yr 10 will be invited to sign up to participate in the coming year.

CanTeen Bandanna Day

It was great to see all of the colourful CanTeen bandannas being worn about the school by students and teacher last Friday. Through this activity we were able to raise $1,455 and also increase awareness of the support services CanTeen offer to teenagers with cancer themselves or in their families.

Thank You

Last Friday during Recess, anyone who walked through busy Liggins Quad would have thought they were accidentally walking through an open air food market! Both sides of the Quad were lined with seasonal fruit platters, home baked sweets and patisseries, freshly made sushi and tasty cheese boards. This wonderful morning tea was hosted by the RPFA and the Service Prefects – Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm, to pamper all our wonderful teachers in celebrating World Teachers’ Day. I believe this wonderful and kind initiative was truly appreciated by all teachers. Thank you to all the students who helped with the catering service.

HSC Science Extension Excursion to Sydney University

The new HSC Science Extension course started last week, and we are delighted with the interest shown by our first cohort of Yr 12 students participating in this exciting opportunity. A class of nine students is embarking on the course, which culminates in an individual Science Research Report modelling the work done by scientists in authentic situations. As such, students are encouraged to make connections with current researchers doing real science, and took part in a workshop run by the University of Sydney last Friday to get the ball rolling. A further workshop, being offered exclusively to Redlands students by UTS, will take place in late November, so watch this space for updates on our students’ projects!

Yr 10 Examinations

Yr 10 examinations commence on Monday. An examination timetable has been distributed to students and is available on Redlands Pulse.  Students only need to attend school for the sessions of their actual examinations. If your child does not have a scheduled examination until the second session (Tutor Time and Periods 3 and 4) they do not need to arrive at school until 10.30am. However, they will not be permitted to leave School between examinations on the same day. If they prefer to study at school, they can sign in and out of the Library accordingly. Students are expected to wear full school uniform and carry correct school bags on all days, except for Thursdays, when they wear Sports uniforms. Please note Thursday afternoon Sport is compulsory during the examination period, but Tuesday training will not take place.

The Big Day In STEAM Event

There was palpable excitement in the Junior School last Friday as we were thrilled to again host this year’s STEAM Big Day In, supported by the ACS Foundation, with every student in Yrs 5 and 6 having the opportunity to interact with a range of Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths (STEAM) industry professionals in hands-on workshops throughout the day. The range of sessions were highly engaging and it was a delight for me, and a number of our executive team, to wander in and out of sessions and observe the engagement, curiosity and challenge presented to students by our visiting experts. In addition to our Stage 3 students’ participation, we were also delighted to welcome 150 visiting students from local schools to join in this experiential learning opportunity.

The day was an unmitigated success and I am grateful to the leadership of Mrs Winrow (eLearning Coordinator) and Mr Coutts (Dean of Teaching and Learning) for working closely with the organisers to ensure the day ran smoothly, ably assisted by Ms Atkins (Dean of Administration) and our ICT team.

I know that the organisation are already looking for Redlands to host this again in 2019 and Mrs Winrow is already exploring the potential of a STEAM Big Day Out excursion for Yrs 3 and 4 on the same day next year to include them too.

World Teacher’s Day Recognition

We were delighted to hear that Mr Nigel Coutts, Dean of Teaching and Learning P-6, was presented with a certificate of recognition at last Friday’s Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales Awards. As well as his work here at Redlands, Mr Coutts is also part of a wider group of educators across NSW who are leading and collaborating to build a culture of thinking in schools across the State and his lead role in this steering committee was also noted. We congratulate Mr Coutts on this noteworthy accolade.

Student Selected for Aspects of Love Role

We were thrilled to hear that Yr 5 student, Charlee Kwintner, successfully auditioned for an exciting lead role as Young Jenny in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Aspects of Love. The show will be playing at the Hayes Theatre from 22 November until 30 December and is produced by Walk This Way Productions in association with the Hayes Theatre Company.

Charlee will share this role with one other girl and will be in half of the 50 planned performances in the coming months and is looking forward to working alongside and learning from some of the best performers and creatives in the industry.

As well as additional training outside of School, Charlee has really enjoyed being part of the Redlands Choir since Kindergarten, Junior Voices, the extra-curricular Musical Theatre program and also benefits from private singing lessons at School, all of which she believes has prepared her well for the role.

Congratulations on this wonderful achievement Charlee and I know you will thrive in this wonderful opportunity for you.

Teacher Appreciation Lunch

To coincide with last Friday’s World Teacher Day, our staff were overwhelmed with the generosity and thoughtful nature of Junior School class parents who provided a sumptuous morning tea and lunch for us to enjoy. It was an unexpected treat at the end of the week and on behalf of our staff, I extend sincere appreciation to all of these parents who contributed towards this gesture and also set up and cleared away.

Yr 6 Fair & Rock in the Quad

On Tuesday lunchtime, Yr 6 students hosted their annual fair to raise money towards leaving a legacy gift for the Junior School on behalf of their cohort. This altruistic idea started with the Yr 6 group of 2016 and has been something that the Yr 6 group have continued since.

It was wonderful to see the students and teachers come together in their planning and ideas to provide a wonderful lunchtime extravaganza for the Junior School alongside a hugely enjoyable Rock in the Quad concert with our Junior School rock bands entertaining students, staff and parents in the glorious sunshine.

The total money raised was a fantastic $1632.80 and the Yr 6 students will discuss their own ideas of how they might like to see the funds serve as a legacy to their time on the Junior Campus.

2019 Junior School Student Class Placements

Junior School staffing for 2019 will be finalised shortly and will be communicated in Note Day towards the end of term. We continue to have the same number of classes in each Year Group as listed below:
Year 3 2019: 4 classes, Year 4 2019: 4 classes, Year 5 2019: 5 classes, Year 6 2019: 5 classes

Class teachers will undertake the process of class formations for 2019 towards the end of this term once we have finalised the composition and balance of each Year Group team of teachers. Past experience has shown that the meticulous and professional approach we take ensures the optimum learning environment for each student.

Class placements are organised by the teaching staff who see and teach these students each and every day and hence, know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  • the individual learning, social and emotional needs of each child
  • knowledge of the different teaching styles of teachers in the next Year Group
  • friendships of students where this has a positive impact on their learning (students are also involved in this step)
  • ability levels to ensure an even spread of ability levels across each class
  • an aim to balance gender in each class, as best possible

Please understand that it is not possible to request a specific teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is neither sustainable nor fair to all families. Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits.

A significant amount of time, professional dialogue and thought goes into this important operational process to aim to match each individual student with the right teacher and peers and I also take part in this process with my additional knowledge of students. Once year groups have finalised these, there will be a comprehensive face-to-face handover of knowledge between teaching staff before the start of Term 1 2019, to ensure that teachers have as much information as possible ahead of next year. These class lists are then prominently displayed on the first day of the new school year but we also have individual student timetables up on the portal a day or two before the start of term so that parents have access to see who their child’s class teacher will be before the start of the 2019 academic year.

I hope this summary clarifies the detailed process that will take place later this term in this very important part of our preparation for 2019.

OOSH December/January Vacation Care

In preparation for your summer holidays, we would like to take this opportunity to give you notice that Vacation Care will be operating from Thursday 6 December to Monday 17 December and Monday 7 January to Friday 25 January inclusive. The OOSH department will be closed for the Christmas holiday period from Tuesday 18 December to Sunday 6 January. If you are leaving Redlands at the end of the year, the last day of class attendance is Tuesday 4 December for all Junior School children and considered the end of your enrolment. Parent Volunteer and Teacher Appreciation 2018

We have so much to be grateful for at Redlands including the many parent volunteers and staff whose generous and positive contributions make such a difference to our school community. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association, together with the large number of parents who volunteer throughout the school year, were thanked by staff and Board Directors on Thursday 18 October in the John Roberts Centre. This year in particular, the substantial effort of all involved in the Spring Fair by volunteering their time throughout the course of the event, was truly appreciated. The School couldn’t operate as successfully without the many families who happily contribute and support students during a variety of school activities. Last Friday was Teacher Appreciation Day and in yet another show of immense generosity, families filled the Preparatory offices with delicious treats for the staff to enjoy. From all the Early Childhood staff, I extend my sincere thanks to the many parents who baked, cooked and packaged such an abundance of food, giving the staff a feeling of appreciation that lasted throughout the day and into the evening, as they took home the leftover goodies. Equally beautiful, were the cards of gratitude made by the students expressing thanks to their teachers.

Kindergarten Information Session

We look forward to welcoming 2019 Kindergarten parents to our Information Session on Wednesday 7 November, beginning at 9.15am in the Junior School’s Arnold Library. Parents will be introduced to key members of staff who will help guide their children through the Kindergarten and Preparatory journey in the coming years.

Yr 3 2019 Parent Information Session

As previously advised, Mr Guha and several staff will be holding a Parent Information Session on Thursday 8 November from 5.30–7.00pm in the Junior School’s Arnold Library for all parents with children transitioning in 2019 from Yr 2 into Yr 3.

Student Placement 2019

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the thorough and careful process teachers engage in to place every child in a class that ensures academic success and a positive year ahead. Please be confident that class placements are made to ensure the best educational experience for every child in the Preparatory School.

Class placements are organised by all of the teaching staff who know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  1. Academic – Current and future teachers work closely to ensure children are placed in an environment where they will be given the best opportunity to reach their full potential and develop a love of learning. Between Redlands House and Prep there is close consultation amongst staff, and the orientation process further enables collective discussions.
  2. Balance of learning styles and learning needs – To ensure all children can receive equal support and attention a balance of learning needs and learning styles is maintained in all classes.
  3. Emotional – Each child’s emotional needs are considered when placing them in a class for the following year as this is recognised as impacting on day-to-day experiences, success and enjoyment of school.
  4. Gender balance – Redlands endeavours to keep a gender balance in each class.
  5. Social/Friendships – Teachers are aware of which students learn and play well together. At times, there can be a difference between the two in that children who play well together do not always learn the best together. This can influence a child’s class placement. Teachers are also mindful of which students need space from each other. With the reorganisation of classes each year, students have the opportunity to meet new friends and mix with other students.

Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits. I know that you will also understand that it is not possible to request a particular teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is simply not sustainable or equitable to all families.

Yr 2 Strings Concert

The Redlands Music Department would like to invite you to the Strings Concert to be held at 2.00pm on Monday 12 November in Dunnet Hall. This concert will showcase students in all the Redlands Strings programs across K-6, including performances by the Preparatory Strings Ensemble, Yr 2 Strings, Yr 3 Strings, Chamber Ensembles, the Junior Strings Ensemble and the Senior Strings Orchestra. In addition to giving all students the opportunity to perform for an appreciative audience, it is hoped that younger students will be inspired by performances from their peers and gain an understanding of the opportunities that Redlands offers for strings players in their future years of study. The Strings Concert will run for approximately 45 minutes. Once the concert has finished students will return to classes and be dismissed at the end of the school day. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.

Vacation Care

In preparation for your Summer holidays, we would like to take this opportunity to give you notice that Vacation Care will be operating from Thursday 6 December to Monday 17 December and Monday 7 January to Friday 25 January inclusive. The OOSH department will be closed for the Christmas holiday period from Tuesday 18 December to Sunday 6 January. If you are leaving Redlands at the end of the year, the last day of class attendance is Monday 3 December for all Prep school children and considered the end of your enrolment. Unfortunately, you are unable to access Vacation Care after your enrolment has ended. Further information about the exciting program and booking details for Vacation Care will be emailed to families in the coming weeks.

Consideration of our Neighbours

As the end of year draws near and there are numerous school events occurring, could I please ask for your consideration toward the school parking zones and our neighbours surrounding the School. Several neighbours have recently mentioned parents who are parking across their driveways and therefore are unable to leave or enter their homes. Redlands is situated in a densely populated area and this, coupled with a busy school drop off and pick up, can cause congestion. I therefore ask if you could park in the designated areas only on Allister Street, utilise the car line on offer or park in adjacent streets to the School. Thank you.

The teachers will tailor the day for the students, whereby they will be able to play in the playground, eat morning tea and lunch, and rotate amongst the classes. This will enable staff to familiarise themselves with all children as they participate in the stimulating Kindergarten and Transition environment. Students can be collected at the end of their day at the Preschool. For students who do not attend Preschool on Wednesdays, drop off will be at 9.00am and collection at 2.00pm from the Preparatory Reception. Please note lunches will not be refrigerated on this day.

Summer Sport

Last weekend saw the official beginning of all summer sports. It was fantastic to receive such great feedback from students, parents and coaches across all sports regarding the enjoyment and positive experience people had in the first week of competition. I would like to make special mention of the Touch Football teams who travelled to Bathurst for a highly successful ISA Gala Day competition. All teams played a minimum of two games with some students playing up to four. Our Rowing team has had a very successful pre-season with all Year Groups completing very tough and rigorous training loads to prepare themselves for competition. This culminated in all members of the Rowing program heading to Newcastle to compete in the Hunter Valley Grammar and Newcastle regattas last weekend. Our Rowing team came away with 17 wins, an outstanding achievement for the Redlands Rowing shed.

Last weekend our summer Sports Captains had a chance to formally represent the students as leaders in their given sports. I would like to formally acknowledge them and encourage any student within their respective sport to seek them out and share any experiences or feedback they have about Sport at Redlands. These students have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of Redlands Sport that they would be willing to share with their peers.

Captain of Basketball (Girls) Sarah Kinghorn
Captain of Basketball (Boys) Josiah Tea

Captain of Rowing (Boys) Alec Price
Captain of Sailing Zach Braden
Captain of Tennis Frederick McKewen
Captain of Touch Football Caitlin du Plooy

Basketball

The Basketball season is now underway. Round 1 was a great round for our girls Basketball teams, coming away with five out of a possible six wins over the weekend. It was a tough Round 1 for our Boys Basketball teams. With our A and B boys teams both moving up a division, all teams played against St Augustine’s who are looking like they will be one of the top schools in the competition. Well done to our 13A boys for a great win. Our C boys teams played against Central Coast B teams which was another tough match up. Congratulations to our 14D and 15D boys teams on two great performances.

Best of luck to all teams as we head into Round 2 this weekend.

Football

The Football AGM will be held on Monday 5 November at 6pm in room L1.2. All parents wishing to be involved in the Friends of Football Committee for the 2019 season are strongly encouraged to attend.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman (Yr 7) and Freya Gait (Yr 7) (pictured L-R: Freya Gait, Jess van Extel (Yr 6) and Eloise Trueman), who are members of the U13 Northern Suburbs and Beaches Indoor Hockey team who took out their Division in the Hunter Cup over the weekend, this is a fantastic achievement and we wish the girls the best of luck in the Indoor Hockey State Cup this weekend. Seb Griffith (Yr 7) was also part of the Hunter Cup over the weekend with his team finishing 2nd overall losing to a strong Newcastle team in the Grand Final. Seb will also be part of the State Championships this weekend.

Rowing

On Saturday 27 October the Rowing program headed off Hunter Valley Grammar School Regatta held in Berry Park (Newcastle). This is the first of our regattas for the new season along with being the first opportunity for our Yr 7 students to experience racing.

The regattas held at Berry Park are an ideal start for our season. Located in the middle of rural farm land, with dairy cows grazing in the paddocks on the opposite side of the river to where we boat from, this is a stress-free picturesque venue that is easy on spectators and competitors alike.

Our older students in Yrs 8 – 11 raced with the Yr 7 students in multiple races, “holding their hands” as they take their first tentative steps into competition, ensuring that they know how to handle the transit to the start, lining up multiple crews at the start line and what type of tempo is required when racing against competition. Across the day our Rowing students represented the School a total of 99 times in different crew combinations from a single sculler through to coxed quads. Racing against adults from local Rowing Clubs along with stiff competition from fellow co-ed schools such as Hunter Valley Grammar School and Newcastle Grammar School, our crews finished with 20 1st places, 20 2nd places and 23 3rd places, with many of our 2nd and 3rd placed crews being beaten by a fellow Redlands crew across the line. This is a remarkable effort by all involved.

Between races, it was impressive to see so many of the students take the opportunity to get in blocks of study in preparation of their exams currently being held this week.

There are too many first placed results to name them all however notable standouts are our Yr 7 students who managed to win a number of events at their first regatta, these include:

WU15 4x+: Charlotte Morrison, Issy Treloar, Alana Mansfield, Audra Olson (Yr 8) and Alex Coney (Yr 10)
WU15 4x+: Taya Garner, Charlotte Perikic, Maia Healey, Sophia Maxwell (Yr 8), Xavier Little (Yr 9)
WD 4x: Charlotte Perikic, Lily Swift, Maya Little, Emily Barrelle (Yr 9) and Tash Richardson (Yr 10)
MU15 4x+: Mitchell Turner, James Ireland, Tobias Bowgerald, Joe Griffiths and Ema Yasumura (Yr 8)
WS1000 4x: Claudia Lalich, Georgia Verschoor, Aysha Sayan, Lily Swift and Camille Ghenzer
MD 4x: Mitchell Turner, James Ireland, Tobias Bowgerald, Ellery Prescott and Ema Yasumura (Yr 8)

A huge thank you to our Friends of Rowing group who organised pizzas for our students to enjoy after boat unloading. After such a long day, this was greatly appreciated!

Touch Football

The Summer Touch Football season kicked off in brilliant fashion over the weekend with a Gala Day in Bathurst hosted by Scots All Saints. It was a wonderful opportunity for all of our teams to show how far they have come through the trial period and these first few weeks of training.

The day kicked off with our 1st VI beating a strong Chevalier side 4-2, some of the combinations that were built over the Summer Pre-Season Camp were put straight into effect with Caroline Bates, Lulu Simpson and Domenica Stuart combining for a wonderful try down the sideline.

Across to the other side of the school, our Junior As put together a fantastic second half effort against Scots All Saints with the combination of Sophia Hill and Ruby Kelly running in three tries between them. A runaway intercept try to Grace Rugge-Price finished the match 5-1 in favour of Redlands.

This Gala Day was designed to be a great way of starting the new ISA Competition and the feedback from all of our athletes was so positive. There were some amazing team efforts with Lily Attard and Madison Hungerford working brilliantly together in our Junior C team and Stella Campbell showed no signs of this being her first season of Touch Football as she ran in an amazing individual try for the Junior Bs.

Special mention must go to Monique Pascoe and Charlie Gregan who played multiple games across the day, combining on multiple occasions and backing up for all of our Senior teams. This type of effort was so helpful to our coaching group on the day, many of whom were trying to balance fatigue in their squads from double up games.

The whole day was a complete success, girls from all teams watching and supporting their peers on other fields. There were some amazing tries from all of our teams, some wonderful defensive efforts across the whole program and to see such a large group of Redlands students representing the school so positively was the most rewarding aspect of the weekend.

Equestrian

Congratulations to Grace O’Toole (Yr 11) and her horse Buddy who were awarded Reserve Champions (2nd Place) in the Unofficial Preliminary Category of the Northside Riding Club Dressage Championships.

All Sports contacts can be found on Redlands Pulse.

Junior Sport

All fixtures this week are as per the original draw except for our Yr 3/4 Basketball A team, whose match is now at 9.30am at Price Courts, Kings Preparatory School.

Cricket

Our cricketers went down in their first match of traditional Cricket, but not without a great fight and the signs are there for some strong cricket. Our lads batted out the 25 overs and showed great energy in the field. Ben Barwise led the team admirably scoring a gritty 30, wicket keeping with great aplomb and then taking wickets with great regularity in his bowling stint. Having played against Shore last weekend, the team now takes on St Andrews this week.

Basketball

Our Yr 3 and 4 basketballers enjoyed the intimate confines of Lang Gymnasium last weekend against a very tough Scots opposition. Our youngsters pushed the bigger Scots boys all the way showing great tenacity and determination despite getting behind early on the scoreboard. The A team battled intently and came away with a hard fought win, which should set them up for a strong finish to the year.

In a wonderful display of leading by example, Harrie Taylor knocked down a season high 19 points last weekend in the F team win.

Before school training will continue whilst our teams are playing Saturday fixtures – Basketball training this Friday 2 November will be on Redlands House Court as Dunnet Hall is hosting the IPSHA Conference.

2019 Term 1 Sports Choices

Even though it feels as though our season is just getting into gear, we are starting to plan for 2019 Term 1 Sport. Keep your eyes peeled for an email in the coming weeks with a link into Trybooking for 2019 Term 1 Junior School Sports choices.

Surf Education

Please check your online permission for the upcoming Surf Education program. Students from Yrs 3-6 will be attending Surf Education lessons as part of the PE Curriculum in Weeks 4 and 5. As we are entering the Sydney summer it’s a great chance for students to be reminded of safety on the beach and in the water. The kids will be under the instruction of Surf Live Saving, will be undertaking a range of rescues, water danger identification, basic first aid and some fun beach games. The program this year is being administered at Freshwater beach with a new surf tuition provider. It looks like it’ll be awesome.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office or email them
