Better Together

One of the most rewarding pay-offs for any young musician is when they can join their music-making with the music-making of their peers. Time spent practising scales and parts in disciplined solitude at home, suddenly finds rich reward when their part is layered with another part and another part – creating something bigger and far more exciting than we can ever achieve on our own. Important life lessons are imbued in the ensemble context, and it’s no wonder that wellbeing benefits are proven and extensive, as we learn to take musical risks in a shared way – supporting, stretching and succeeding alongside our peers.

We are so fortunate at Redlands to have such support for the Arts, with rich and diverse opportunities for our students to develop themselves creatively. This week saw beaming smiles on faces, and a fresh, chatty buzz in corridors and classrooms as our ensembles from P-12 launched for 2023.

We’re planning and discussing all our big shows and festivals for 2023 in rehearsal, and can’t wait to share our Music with our community.

A wonderful year is in store. You won’t want to miss what we’ve got planned!

Wishing you the best week ahead.

Amy Richardson | Director of Music P-12

Friends of Music Gathering

Friends old and new from across the school are invited to join us in the Edwards auditorium next Thursday evening as we dream together for the year ahead.  We are deeply grateful for the support our Friends of Music and hope that the act of drawing alongside your children and supporting their music-making in whatever capacity you have (big or small) will be richly rewarding, and the source of wonderful memories to look back on in years to come!  If you’d like to find out more, please reach out to our President Lisa Connors via RedlandsFriendsofMusic@gmail.com or leave your contact information in the form below.

Battle of the Bands Auditions Open!

Our first competition in the series is Battle of the Bands on Senior Campus, which is set to take place on Monday 3 April. This is an incredible opportunity for our talented contemporary musicians to showcase their skills and compete against their peers in a thrilling ‘gig format’ in front of their friends and families. The theme for all entries this year is Australian Music, and we cannot wait to see how our performers interpret this theme in their music.

We have two sections available this year – Rock Band and Unplugged (for the solo and duo acts out there). As always, our Junior School Rock Bands will be our guest act, and we can guarantee that their performance will be a highlight of the evening.

Auditions are now open and are due by Friday 3 March via the iLearn Music Department Auditions page. We are excited to see the incredible talent that our students possess, and we are confident that this year’s competition will be an incredible showcase of our students’ musical abilities. We cannot wait to see what our rockers have in store for us!

COCURRICULAR MUSIC

Bands & Small Ensemble Program

This week, we launched our new leadership opportunity within all our Senior Cocurricular Music streams: the Section Leaders. These small groups of students have demonstrated ongoing leadership potential through their unwavering dedication to their instruments and ensembles, and we are excited to have them on board in this new capacity.

Our Section Leaders will work with our Yr 12 Captains to support our ever-growing program. They will play a vital role in providing guidance and mentorship to their peers, and they will be instrumental in promoting a positive and inclusive culture within our program.
