Issue 3 2023 Term 1 Week 3 - 16 Feb 2023

From The Principal

On Monday evening, our Director of Digital Innovation, Mary-Lou O’Brien, and I attended a webinar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in Education which was promoted by the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia. In this webinar four educational leaders discussed some of the opportunities and challenges for schools in light of the rapid advancements in AI, including the recent emergence of ChatGPT. This webinar was just one of many professional learning sessions attended by Redlands staff in recent weeks focusing on generative AI.

Our Redlands Vision is to inspire girls and boys to achieve life-readiness and to let their light shine, through the provision of a world recognised, contemporary education. The reality is that this world for which we are preparing our students to live, work and learn in, is now being, and will continue to be, rapidly transformed by technologies such as AI. Therefore, for our students to be truly life-ready, it is our responsibility as educators to discuss with them not only the threats and challenges of generative AI like ChatGPT, but also the potential benefits and opportunities. At the heart of our Redlands Learning Platform is a focus on critical thinking, creative thinking and deep understanding. We will continue to harness and prioritise these dispositions in our students’ learning as they engage with AI and other new and emerging technologies.

Our Director of Digital Innovation, Mary-Lou O’Brien, has published a more indepth article on Pulse about how the School is responding to the emergence of ChatGPT and other generative AI. The article can be found here.

Last Thursday, our Secondary School Chaplain, Kirsten Phillips, our Dean of Students (7-12), Marita Jansons, and I accompanied our Secondary School student leaders to the Annual Service for Student Leaders of Anglican Schools. Our students joined other school leaders from more than 30 Anglican schools across NSW for this special service. In the service we heard the reading from the Gospel of John where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet and says to them, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” This focus on servant leadership is at the heart of our student leadership model at Redlands, and I have already been privileged this year to witness numerous examples of students in both the Junior and Secondary Schools displaying servant leadership in the playgrounds, at the school gates or during special events.

On Tuesday afternoon I was excited to speak to my Prep School friends at their first assembly of the year. I encouraged the students to aim to be their best selves this year and read them an excerpt of a poem that I remembered from my Lower School days in America entitled Be the Best of Whatever You Are.

If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can’t be the sun be a star;
It isn’t by size that you win or you fail —
Be the best of whatever you are!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Twilight in the Garden this Friday evening on the Fahl Garden of the Senior Campus as the event provides yet another opportunity for us to come together as a community.

The Fahl Garden has provided a wonderful setting for a number of recent events, including last night’s Year 12 HSC and IB Information Evening, which you can read more about in the Head of Secondary School’s section of Note Day, as well as the recent Principal Commissioning, highlighted in this short video.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to attend the first meeting of our Prep School Parent Contact Group (PCG) this year, where I met Class Parents and shared the activities and projects currently underway in Community Engagement. Our PCGs continue to explore ways to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. If you are looking to connect with our community for support then please reach out to the passionate and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group Parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support Redlands families.

We look forward to welcoming our community to Twilight in the Garden tomorrow evening. This much loved event provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our School community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus. Tickets are still available to purchase here.

Each year the graduating class at Redlands celebrate and acknowledge their Redlands education with a Legacy Gift. The Legacy Gift provides the cohort with a unique opportunity to thank the School for its support, encouragement and the opportunities offered while studying at Redlands. More on this important and noble cause, along with an update from Young Redlander of the Year 2022 recipient Tiffany Wong (RL 2014), can be found here.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlands is Part of a Giving Society

We are delighted that our means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund is a registered charity with Good2Give which is a Workplace Giving organisation. This platform enables companies to empower their employees to donate to charities and not-for-profits, straight from their salary, with no need to keep credit cards or bank details up to date and, in most cases, offers matching gifts.

Many prominent employers such as Westpac, Citibank, BT, NAB, Qantas, Stockland, Baker & MacKenzie, Deutsche Bank and others are part of this program. If you have a workplace giving account and would love to contribute to our cause, please visit here.

Legacy Gift of Class of 2023

We were delighted to launch this initiative last week and build on efforts of previous cohorts. A team of our Year 12 students brainstormed ideas for fundraising opportunities supporting the means-tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship.

We are excited to announce that the Fair will be moving back to the Senior Campus, so we will be able to showcase the Redlands Learning Hub and Fahl Garden, as well as the 100-year old Liggins Building. We have a slew of rides for all ages as well as a KindiFarm of baby animals, traditional carnival games and treats, as well as a dunk tank, crazy hair and face painting, and scrumptious foods from Asian and Latin American cultures as well as a sausage sizzle. As always, we would not have a successful fair without your help. Thanks to all the volunteers who have already signed up to be stall captains. Please let us know if you would be interested in helping here. Wristbands and coupons will go on sale starting next week!

Our Second Hand Uniform Sales provide great value for families and also give each of us an opportunity to contribute to the clear benefits of recycling. In addition, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.

We are planning on holding our next Second Hand Uniform Sale close to the end of this term. Winter uniforms, winter sports uniforms, fleeces, tracksuits and various accessories will be available for purchase. We will need parent volunteers to help us sort through inventory and run the sale. Spreading the Love for a Worthy Cause

Yr 12 Leaders: Joe Griffiths, Charlotte Scamps, Simone Franceschi, Taylor Riddell

Our Yr 12 Service Captains embraced the spirit of love and compassion this Valentine’s Day by organising a fundraiser to support the victims and communities impacted by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. The Service Captains sold roses and flowers to students and staff, raising just over $1000 for the Emergency Action Alliance, an organisation dedicated to providing relief to those affected by the earthquakes.

We are proud of our students for taking the initiative to contribute to such a worthy cause and demonstrating leadership and empathy in their actions. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the fundraiser and contributed to this important cause, including students, staff and our ever supportive Service Coordinator, Ms Rachael Riley. She and the students were grateful and excited by the community’s support.

Chaplain

We enjoyed joining together to pray with parents and staff earlier this week at our Redlands Community Prayer Gathering held at St Peter’s Cremorne. Our next meeting will be in March and all are warmly welcome to join us.

We have so much to be grateful for at the start of this new year and during Junior Campus Chapel this term we are spotlighting gratitude. We have created a Gratitude Gallery in each of the reception areas. Check out the students’ fabulous illustrations and some examples gratitude. On Valentine’s Day in the Senior Campus, we tried to ‘spread the love of Jesus’ and remind each student that they are uniquely valued and loved by handing out heart lollipops at each gate.

Each campus has launched their lunchtime Christian groups for the term with K-2 on Wednesday (TGIL), 3-6 on Friday (TGIF) and Monday (Lumos) for 7-12. We are looking forward to welcoming any interested students to these groups.

Gap Years

Why should I take a gap year?

There are several reasons you might like to take a gap year. Here are some of the most popular reasons:

  • Personal growth: A gap year can provide you with opportunities for self-discovery, personal growth, and increased independence.
  • Travel and cultural experiences: Probably the most popular gap year option, travel can allow you to immerse yourself in different cultures and learn about the world.
  • Recharge: If you’re feeling burned out after high school, a gap year can give you the time and space you need to recharge and refocus. You can use this time to firm up your plans for post-school study or work. (On the flip side, some students find it hard to return to study after a break as they have lost the momentum.)
  • Skill building: Some time off from study can allow you to learn new skills, take up a new hobby, or gain valuable work experience.

How can I prepare for a gap year?

If you’re convinced that a gap year is right for you, here’s what you need to do next to be prepared:

  • Decide on your plans: Decide exactly what you want to accomplish during your gap year. Think about exactly how long you plan to take off, and what you’re going to do during that time.
  • Set a budget: Particularly if you’re looking to travel, you’ll need to start setting aside some money. Do up a budget now so you know how much you need to save and can start working towards that goal.
  • Research programs and opportunities: Start by researching the programs listed below. Pay attention to application dates – these can be quite early in the year.

Defer your studies: We recommend you apply for post-school study courses in Year 12. When you come to enrolling in a course (usually at the beginning of 2024) you can then elect to defer your commencement date. Most universities provide the option to defer for 6 or 12 months. Do some research on deferrals for your preferred courses first, as in some rare cases deferral isn’t possible (for example for international students, or for some scholarships or very competitive courses such as Medicine).

Yr 7 Movie Night and Bake Sale Recap

Last week, Yr 11 worked extremely hard to raise funds for the WWF. These efforts began in Yr 10 Term 3 when this cohort became inspired to support the Class of 2022 in their effort to support environmental causes.  With students at Winter School last year and the many events in Term 4, these plans were postponed to the start of this year. Students began implementing and adjusting their plans immediately in Wk 1 to make the most impactful experience for Yr 7 and for fundraising. The total amount raised through movie ticket sales and the bake sale totalled over $1200.

Thank you and well done to all Yr 11 students who contributed to this incredible cause. A special thank you to the students who helped plan and organise this event and enjoyed the movie with Yr 7 to the end on Friday to ensure it ran smoothly: Antonia Morgan, Sophia Rolon, Eva Osborn, Daisy Thomas, Winter Penney, Anabelle Cullen, Alfie Leach, Alisha Tang, Ashley Stapleton, Jocelyn Wang, Chloe Moore and Lara Farrell.

Year 10

Rowing

Last weekend saw much of our program attend the NSW State Championships. This regatta has grown over the past 5 years to now have a level of competition that makes it effectively a miniature National Championships. While the level of competition is high, our students still achieved some strong results with Angus McInnes (Yr10) winning both a Silver and Bronze medal.

Some particular results for Year 10 include:

CMU16 4x+: 3rd in Final (T Whitney, R Beggs, Z Borness, A McInnes, Cox: A Koopmans)

CMU16 1x: 2nd in Final (A McInnes)

CWU17 1x: 7th in Semi-Final (J Hugman)

Career Assessment for Yr 10 2023

As part of the Yr 10 Careers Program, and ahead of the Stage 6 Course and Subject Selection Process, Redlands offers a career assessment opportunity to all Yr 10 students. Redlands have engaged Career Avenues run by Dr Marian Kratzing, a Careers Psychologist. Dr Kratzing has developed a unique career profiling system which she and her colleagues provide to many independent schools in Sydney. https://careeravenues.com/

We encourage every student to participate in this opportunity, as the results are interesting and surface important questions prior to the Stage 6 Course and Subject Selection. The exercise also provides a great start for research into potential tertiary courses and future pathways.

A letter was sent home to all parents and carers, however if you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact:

A Wonderful Week of Yr 9

This week has seen Yr 9 engaged in a range of interesting activities, from how to effectively plan for assessment tasks and self-manage workload during Tutor time, to an incredibly informative interactive workshop led by Shivani Gopal, the founder and CEO of ELLADEX and Co-Founder of Upstreet. On Thursday, Yr 9 took part in a ySafe workshop, considering how to stay safe online. While it has been busy, the cohort has looked to these new experiences with energy and open-mindedness, continuing to build their capacity as our middle school leaders.

School TV – Parenting Series

Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!

Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being at an all-time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.

SchoolTV – RAISING GIRLS

Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys.

Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SchoolTV – RAISING BOYS

Many parents will attest to the fact that most boys are active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play, but this should not affect how a parent acts towards their son. Be careful not to pigeon-hole your son into sex-specific behaviours or gender roles. The male brain is distinctly different in its development. A boy’s physical maturity is often at odds with his mental and brain development.

Societal beliefs about how to raise boys can sometimes influence their adult carers. Although we are not determined by our biology, it is a factor. It is important to support boys in their natural tendencies and nurture their strengths and abilities. Teach them the skills they need for their future and to develop a healthy identity. It is important for boys to have a role model they can connect with and acknowledge who they are. One of the most important determinants for a boy’s development is how secure they feel growing up.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will gain a better understanding into some of the more complex issues relating to raising boys.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Year 7

Week 3 – Finding our Feet, our Friends and our Focus

After a full fortnight of classes now, Yr 7 are really looking like they belong in the Secondary School. In addition to ‘learning the ropes’ in each of their academic classes, students have successfully been making friends, connecting with their teachers, and experiencing the fun (and challenges!) of the Redlands cocurricular program.

Week 2 ended with a bonding event, as the Yr 11 service students held a wonderful movie night for Yr 7 on Friday. Students enjoyed watching the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and there was many a laugh, particularly from the antics of actors Jack Black and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. I really enjoyed the film too! Thank you to the Yr 11 Service leaders for coordinating such a fun event.

On Monday, students started the week with a firm focus towards the future, engaging in Coaching Conversations with their Tutors across Periods 1 and 2. These conversations are all about fostering students’ self-awareness and skills in personal reflection, as they are encouraged to set important goals for Term 1, communicating these with their Tutors. Later in the day, Yr 7 experienced their first Chapel service. The cohort were impressive in their respectful movement into the Chapel and their reflective demeanour as they listened to Mrs Phillips’ sermon on how best to ‘fill themselves’ this year with all Redlands has to offer. Our new Principal, Mr Corcoran, was also in attendance to hand deliver to each student a personal diary, signed by him, and gifted to them by our former Principal, Mr Webber.

On Tuesday, students experienced their first Student Leader assembly in the Lang Gym, where they were warmly welcomed into the school by our school captains, Dan and Josie, and later congratulated on their confident and positive integration into the Secondary School by Mrs Van de Peer. On Wednesday, students stepped up to the challenge, successfully evacuating their classrooms in a fire drill. Yr 7 responsibly found their way to the Basketball court where they checked off their attendance before waiting patiently to return to class. Everyone remained calm and composed throughout – a good sign should we ever really need to evacuate the school. Well done!

On Thursday, students benefitted from specific instruction from their Tutors on how to use their student planners to record their home learning and plan for the weeks ahead. These lessons in organisation will continue once we return from camp. Students were also presented to by ySafe who gave them important information on managing cyberbullying and online conflict; understanding the dangers of sexting and their obligations under the law; and how to maintain their online wellbeing. While sometimes confronting, this was an extremely valuable and informative event for the cohort.

Key Dates and Upcoming Events

Sustainability in Prep

The current Redlands Strategic Plan has sustainability as one of the driving key pillars. In Prep, our very own Carty Haverhals, is working hard to embed sustainability into our learning and workplace experiences. Currently our students are spending time with David Harrington, an ethnobotanist, to learn about the amazing world of what grows and lives in our own gardens. It is never too early to develop an understanding of the importance that sustainability plays in our lives. I am very proud of the way the Prep students are embracing sustainability by taking action. I encourage you to talk to your child about ways they can take action at home.

Our Yr 2 Sustainability Captains are now visible in the playground, we have gardening and bug adventure lunchtime clubs, and in addition, our Prep students are making use of their food scraps by feeding our worm farm.

Calling all Budding Writers (aged 11-18 yrs)

Stanton Library in Mosman is excited to announce that this year’s Nan Manefield Young Writer’s Award is now open for entries. Students aged 11-18 years can easily upload their entries via their website any time before 5pm, Sunday 30 April, 2023.

The Nan Manefield Young Writers’ Award is judged in five age categories. Poetry and short stories are judged together. This year’s judges are all award-winning authors (Sue Whiting, Will Kostakis, Tim Sinclair, Ursula Dubosarasky and Erin Gough) and this is a great opportunity for students to have their stories read by these talented authors.

The awards presentation will be on Thursday 8 June and will be a celebration focused on the young people and their writing. Families will hear directly from the judges and the young writers themselves, with the winning entries being read aloud.

Prizes total over $3500 and all place-getters will also receive an invitation to a Writing Masterclass with one of the judges in the July school holidays.

Attached are posters advertising the award and information about the judges. Past winning entries and the online entry form is available on the website. Creative writing completed in class would be suitable as entries.

Cybersafety Education

Next week, Yrs 5 and 6 students and all staff will be involved in Cybersafety education sessions with our partners, ySafe. Our longstanding connection with ySafe, industry leaders in this important ever-changing landscape, has allowed us to continue to review and refine the educational experiences for our students, in particular, to ensure that these sessions are both relevant and impactful.

As I have mentioned before, I also encourage every parent to explore Redlands’ Cybersafety Hub which was set up in 2021 with ySafe and is a treasure-trove of valuable information.

Swimming Carnival – Wednesday 22 February

Next week sees our first House Carnival of 2023 as we head out to Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for our annual Swimming Carnival. We look forward to a day full of action and House spirit!

NAPLAN 2023

Parents of students in Yrs 3 and 5 would have received a letter this week from our Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Matt Bentley about the upcoming National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which is much earlier this year.

Previously held in mid-May, these national assessment of literacy and numeracy skills for all students in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 are sat by all NSW schools and will be online in 2022, except for Yr 3 Writing. This means the results should be in the hands of teachers earlier than has been previously to inform and guide our teaching and learning programs throughout the rest of the school year.

Redlands will be participating in NAPLAN between Wednesday 15 March to Monday 27 March 2023. In preparation for NAPLAN, our Yr 3 and Yr 5 students will also be participating in familiarisation assessments beforehand. This will help students to become familiar with the online platform, the style of questions and how they are to be answered.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in NAPLAN.

School Uniform Reminder

We are only in Week 3 but have some students not arriving in correct uniform. Please note that we will be addressing this with those students and ask that parents support the school expectations as well. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch

Just a reminder that each child has 3 breaks for food in the preschool each day – Crunch & Sip, Morning Tea and Lunch. Can we please ask that these containers are clearly labelled with the child’s name and are placed in the appropriate location. Often staff are spending a great deal of time sorting through lunch boxes to find morning tea for the children. Please ensure each of the items is placed in the correct location at the beginning of the day.

Crunch & Sip: ‘Crunch & Sip’ is a break during class time when the children can refuel on a fruit or vegetable snack only (that is packed in addition to Morning Tea and Lunch) and rehydrate with water. The ‘Crunch & Sip’ break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox. Children are also more likely to eat their fruit or vegetables and drink their water if their friends and peers are all doing it too! We ask that you provide this snack in a separately labeled container or zip-lock bag and place it in the basket on the sink in the classroom storeroom. Drink bottles will also be kept in here and the children will be able to refill their bottles at the sink as they need.

Morning Tea and Lunch are stored in separate containers in the fridge. Each class has a fridge door to open. Morning Tea containers are kept in the class basket in the fridge and Lunch boxes and stored on the shelf.

Please remember that we are an Allergy Friendly Centre (ie. allergy aware) and have a number of children with serious allergies. Therefore, we ask that any food your child brings to Preschool does not contain nuts or traces of nuts or shellfish. We have a number of resources containing nutritious and well-balanced lunch box ideas available in our parent library in the foyer for inspiration.

Secondary Sport

We have been unpacking the values in which Redlands Sport will be living by over the past few weeks, this week’s important value is ‘fun’. We should all have enjoyment in Sport, as this will create greater motivation, engagement and overall quality in all aspects of the Redlands community. We strive to create safe and supportive environments for all students to gain personal satisfaction form their individual and team improvement and growth. Empowering others to embrace all of our successes and celebrate them accordingly, which leads into some results from this past Saturday!

What a week we had in Sport! For the first time since we have played Touch Football the Girls 1st VI defeated Barker College. The pure joy and elation after the game on Saturday was absolutely AMAZING, the girls and coaches have been working so hard over the last few years with Barker being a benchmark for the Touch Football competition. A huge thanks must definitely go to Ms Jordy Parsonage for the work and effort she has put in over the last three years to get the Touch Football program to where it is today, the win on Saturday has put huge confidence in the girls leading into this weekend fixtures and the Finals in a few weeks, you couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces!

Basketball

We are headed into the tail end of the season, with our teams competing in Round 9 this Saturday 18 February. Please check the weekly fixtures on Redlands Pulse ahead of your game this weekend as there have been a number of changes to the original fixtures at the start of the season.

All students must arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time on the fixture and must be wearing Redlands Sports attire/Redlands Basketball uniform.

A number of our teams are travelling via bus this Saturday. All buses will depart from outside the Adams Centre on Military Rd. If you will be providing your own transport to the game, can you please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au so that the coaches are not waiting for you at the bus on Saturday.

Best of luck in Round 9!

Redlands “Fab 5” Girls (Round 8)

Charlotte Humphreys: Was super eager to step up and help the Seconds out and still gave 110% effort in her game afterwards. She wasn’t afraid to get to the basket and score, racking up some points in the first half. She was relentless on the glass and stepped up in the shooting department but also did a great job of sharing the ball with her teammates.

Mia Kwintner: She was the smallest player on court and still able to mark one of their tallest players. She made some great passes and found good space on offence in a tough first loss for the girls. Always positive and taking on feedback.

Maddie D’Almeida: Maddie was unreal at both ends of the floor, super consistent finishing around the rim and protecting the basket on defence. She did a great job at keeping her head when she was getting fouled under the basket and made some huge plays to get the team a lead.

Freja Nixey: Freja played hard on both ends of the floor and consistently scored some awesome points in both our games. Her leadership on and off the court was also epic, she really stepped up and helped out her teammates in a really positive and encouraging way!

Stella Nicholl: Stella played a full game and managed to help double Oxley’s score! Not once did she slow down and managed to keep up the pace the whole game. So incredibly proud of her efforts!

Redlands “Fab 5” Boys (Round 8)

Jack Hutchings: Jack returned to our team today after recovering from an injury. He stepped up big time and really bought into the team identity that we have been developing this season. He was incredible locking left when guarding the ball, made 3 threes all from paint touch kick outs and was a vocal leader in a hard-fought win against St Pats. So proud of his efforts and his positive interactions with teammates to contribute to a great team culture.

David Abineno: David was instrumental in motivating our players. His points and steals came at clutch times and helped start our team to an early lead. Even from the bench, he was constantly cheering and supporting the squad.

Spencer Farrell: Spencer had a monster game for the 1st Boys. He went 4/4 from the FT line in the last two minutes including an “And 1” play with 30 seconds to go to help us claw the lead back.

Jet Gwilliam: Jet had a great game. He made some fantastic drives to the basket and finished at the rim with confidence. He was a vocal leader on the court and communicated well with his teammates to get the team organised.

Rafferty Heard: Rafferty was killing it on the glass. Snatching rebounds all over the place and going back up strong. He has improved his defensive positioning and not only helped his teammates but made things tough for the opposition.

Coach of the Week (Round 8)

Mike Golding: It was a huge effort from Mike Golding in Round 8, helping the 1st Boys to get their first win of the ISA Season. With both teams trading baskets in the final minutes of the games it was a high stress environment for both players and coaches. Mike did a great job of keeping his composure and helping his team to get over the line.

The ISA Basketball trials were held earlier this week and it was great to see a number of Redlands Basketball players recognised for their efforts with selection into the ISA team. Congratulations to Oliver Kesby who has been selected into the 1st Boys ISA team. A further congratulations to Emilie Bessell, Eva Osborn, Alexandra Tanner and Madeleine D’Almeida who have been selected into the squad of 13 for the Open Girls team, and Annabelle Kesby who has been selected into the squad of 12 for the 16s Girls team. It is a fantastic achievement to see so many Redlands players recognised at such a high level. We wish these students the best of luck when they compete for the ISA team later this year.

Fitness Centre

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the Redlands Fitness Centre with great numbers across all sessions in the first week. Led by our brand new Year 7s, we have had a variety of circuit based training sessions blended alongside our individual sessions for our more senior athletes. I could not be more excited by what is to come within this space in the coming weeks and as we lead into the finals for our Summer Rep Sport.

For all students using the Fitness Centre space please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:45am with students able to join throughout the morning.

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep Sports at Redlands. Our aim at the Fitness Centre is to create an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and for all students to start their day off on a great note.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size, or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Keep an eye out for our Trainer of the Week which will be announced in Note Day. Our Week One and Week Two winners will be announced next week.

Rowing

Last weekend saw much of our program attend the NSW State Championships. This regatta has grown over the past 5 years to now have a level of competition that makes it effectively a miniature National Championships. While the level of competition is high, our students still achieved some strong results with Angus McInnes (Yr 10) winning both a Silver and Bronze medal.

Sailing

This week Redlands Sailing has a variety of conditions, with Thursday having a massive weather front coming through with a very active lightning storm, whilst on Saturday there is very little wind in the morning until the north-easterly filled in the afternoon. This meant that we were unable to spend much time on the water however we went through race theory and introduced all the new students to the boats and some basics of Sailing.

Tuesday Sailing – This week will be the first Tuesday session of the term and we will have Group A on the water please see the attached list.

Reminder that the YEAR 7s DO NOT COME TO TUESDAY SAILING.

Thursday and Saturday Sailing – These sessions will continue as normal.

Please remember for Saturdays that the meeting point is the Youth Training Room at 8am, not the front gate.

Friends of Sailing Breakfast

The Friends of Sailing parent group would like to welcome everyone to Term 1 2023 sailing by inviting Redlands Sailing families (and especially new families who have joined the program this year) to join us on the RSYS deck for coffee and breakfast this Saturday 18 February from 8am (right after drop-off). Junior Sport

Week 3

In what proved to be a beautiful Saturday we got under way with our Representative Sports Program with all matches taking place. Our newest students to the Junior School started their Representative Sport career with all of our Year 3 and Year 4 teams securing a win in Football. Our Year 5 and Year 6 Tennis team played some great single and double matches and securing a big win over Kings. Our mixed Basketball had a great start to their season playing at home and winning 4 from 6 teams. The teams also looked great in their new uniform. A reminder for those families to purchase the new basketball shorts if you have not done so already. Our Touch Football teams played two tough sides from Waverley and secured a win in the A team and a draw for the B team.

Some housekeeping matters from Saturday sport, Round 1 to focus on for Round 2;

  • Check Summer Sport team lists on Wednesday night for team changes
  • Players in be in full uniform (Redlands apparel only) with water bottle left next to coach’s kit bag prior to kick off
  • Meet coach 30min prior to start time
  • The final match at home requires that Basketball team to assist in packing up Dunnet Hall at the conclusion of the game
  • Players to stay thank you to coaches at the end of each game and to give 3 cheers for the opposition.

As outlined last week, the draw (Saturday morning matches) for coaches, parents and staff will be ‘live’ in nature and will be available via this link which allows you to filter the draw by sport and even team. Sport draws and changes are never emailed to parents and due to changes that may come through, please do not print out. When changes to times and or grounds come through from host schools during the week these will automatically update this draw on your device. I have also included the addresses of the venues within the host school to save time and stress once you arrive at a venue with 25 playing fields and you have to find Field 1b. Please spend some time navigating and saving this document on your phone or device.

Hair for Dance

As we are teaching our Prep students the importance of having neat and tidy hair for Dance, could you please pack a hair net, hair grips and pins and a hairbrush each time they come to Dance, so our team can help them do their hair.

New Parent Pick-up Point for Redlands House and Prep Students

From Monday 20 February we have a new after class parent pick-up point for our Redlands House and Prep dancers. Please see the Junior Campus map below.

Please check the time your child’s dance class ends to ensure you are at the pick-up point on time.

Music

Better Together

One of the most rewarding pay-offs for any young musician is when they can join their music-making with the music-making of their peers. Time spent practising scales and parts in disciplined solitude at home, suddenly finds rich reward when their part is layered with another part and another part – creating something bigger and far more exciting than we can ever achieve on our own. Important life lessons are imbued in the ensemble context, and it’s no wonder that wellbeing benefits are proven and extensive, as we learn to take musical risks in a shared way – supporting, stretching and succeeding alongside our peers.

We are so fortunate at Redlands to have such support for the Arts, with rich and diverse opportunities for our students to develop themselves creatively. This week saw beaming smiles on faces, and a fresh, chatty buzz in corridors and classrooms as our ensembles from P-12 launched for 2023.

We’re planning and discussing all our big shows and festivals for 2023 in rehearsal, and can’t wait to share our Music with our community.

A wonderful year is in store. You won’t want to miss what we’ve got planned!

Wishing you the best week ahead.

Amy Richardson | Director of Music P-12

Friends of Music Gathering

Friends old and new from across the school are invited to join us in the Edwards auditorium next Thursday evening as we dream together for the year ahead.  We are deeply grateful for the support our Friends of Music and hope that the act of drawing alongside your children and supporting their music-making in whatever capacity you have (big or small) will be richly rewarding, and the source of wonderful memories to look back on in years to come!  If you’d like to find out more, please reach out to our President Lisa Connors via RedlandsFriendsofMusic@gmail.com or leave your contact information in the form below.

Battle of the Bands Auditions Open!

Our first competition in the series is Battle of the Bands on Senior Campus, which is set to take place on Monday 3 April. This is an incredible opportunity for our talented contemporary musicians to showcase their skills and compete against their peers in a thrilling ‘gig format’ in front of their friends and families. The theme for all entries this year is Australian Music, and we cannot wait to see how our performers interpret this theme in their music.

We have two sections available this year – Rock Band and Unplugged (for the solo and duo acts out there). As always, our Junior School Rock Bands will be our guest act, and we can guarantee that their performance will be a highlight of the evening.

Auditions are now open and are due by Friday 3 March via the iLearn Music Department Auditions page. We are excited to see the incredible talent that our students possess, and we are confident that this year’s competition will be an incredible showcase of our students’ musical abilities. We cannot wait to see what our rockers have in store for us!

Under the leadership of Choir Captain Phoebe Barnett, I would also like to congratulate our new Section Leaders to Senior Choir:

I look forward to a wonderful year ahead.

Have you downloaded the Redlands App?

Not just for parents! We are encouraging any student of phone-owning age to download the App so that they can build agency with managing their rehearsal and lesson times via the Calendar in the App. Download from your relevant App store and reach out to IT with questions.
