Year 9
Arnhem Land
This has been a wonderful year for Yr 9 thus far. Currently with our focus and planning for a Service-Learning Project, the weeks ahead with have an emphasis on Camp preparation.
Weeks 9 & 10 of this term will prepare students practically for what will they need for camp. Building on this, we will delve into the cultural expectations of our students, connection to self, connection to others, and connection to country. There will be strong themes of cultural understanding, for students to develop an awareness of their cultural footprint for developing a respectful relationship with the Yolngu when we arrive. Students will learn how to listen and observe, to practice patience, what Yolngu time means, men and women’s business, kinship and skin names, language, and excitingly, Bungul (Dance Ceremony).
The Tutor Team, Abby and I are incredibly excited about the experience which awaits Year 9, and we do welcome any conversation with you over the next few days if you require this.
Yr 9 Service Learning Project – Vinnies Drive
As part of this Service Learning Project, we are asking students across the school to bring in personal hygiene items to create personal hygiene bags for those in need, however in addition, thought we would also reach out to the parent community to see if we could also ask for further donations.
Donation items include:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Band aids
- Hand sanitiser
- Deodorant
- Soap or body wash
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes
- Small tissue packs
- Hairbrush/hair ties
- Sanitary items – pads, tampons and panty liners.
A collection box will be located in the Secondary School Office every day during Week 8-10 this term where you are able to drop off your supplies.
Thanks for your support.
ISA Athletics Carnival
The ISA Athletics Carnival is taking place next Tuesday at Sydney Olympic Park. Students who have been selected for the ISA Athletics team, will need to meet at the Fahl Garden at 7am. The team will depart Sydney Olympic Park at 5:30pm and should arrive back to the Redlands Senior Campus at 6pm. There will be a team meeting and training session this coming Friday at Balmoral Oval after school with a bus dropping the team to the oval at 3:30 and a bus returning students back to school by 5:15. If there is rain on Friday, the team meeting/training will be moved to the Junior School. Best of luck to all students competing at the ISA Athletics Carnival.

Slam Poetry
Last week 9(O) engaged with a creative writing task to perform Slam? Protest poetry.
Slam! is a big poetry competition that is very popular in the USA in particular.
Ms Beggs’ class took it to heart and did an earnest job, protesting against such issues as Asian stereotyping; abortion rights; the impact of gaming culture on gun violence; and a range of mental health issues.
Some examples of students work:
Martha Sorenson focused on LGBT.
Hugo Baird, Liam Peterson and Zach Borness focused on: Environmental – Australia’s throw-away textile/fashion habits.
Remy Morriss, Freya Kittle and Abbie Sewell focused on self-esteem and anxiety.
Hiro Phillips and Charles Hargrave focused on the pervasive impact of screens on kids – addressing kids to make changes
