Issue 27 2022 Term 3 Week 8 - 08 Sep 2022

From The Principal

This week has seen the commencement of a number of events scheduled to celebrate the Yr 12 Class of 2022 and their significant contribution to Redlands. It has been a pleasure to attend each of the House Morning Teas, to acknowledge the leadership of our House Captains, Heads of House and Tutors and the connection developed through the years of activities. We have enjoyed welcoming back a number of Redlanders to share their perspective as recent graduates and to offer encouragement to the students. My thanks to Hunter Auld (2021), Sarah Cowper (1972), Charlie Rogers (2017), Rebecca Faurby (2019) and Jeff Brown (2016) for joining us and supporting the 2022 graduates.

It is always impressive to learn about the various pathways and opportunities that Redlanders embrace upon leaving the school gates. As an example, Charlie Rogers recently received an R&A International Scholarship from the University of St Andrews which fully funds a year of international travel. “I intend to travel through remote regions of Western Australia and Central America, giving me the opportunity to live, learn and engage with people I would never ordinarily get the chance to meet. Continuing on from my previous work on social identity and environmentalism, I will be focusing specifically on how Indigenous environmental philosophies can help us to heal and connect with country.”

Charlie’s passions for social justice and climate change led her to produce a campaign for climate action which aired on Channel 9 in the second half of 2021. After graduating from Redlands in 2017, Charlie was awarded the inaugural International Excellence Scholarship to attend the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Having recently completed her MA (Hons) International Relations and Psychology there, she was  the recipient of the Malcolm Jeeves Award for Best Student Overall in Honours Psychology. Her energy, passion and drive are inspirational and it was wonderful to connect and learn about her desire to make a positive difference in the world.

Recently the School appointed Ms Robyn Priestley as a consultant to assist with a review of our current IB programs and pathways. Robyn is a well-known educator in the IB community and will be visiting the school periodically to conduct interviews with groups of students and staff members over the next six months. The review of academic programs forms part of our Strategic Plan (2021-25) and is focussed on ensuring that each of our students achieves personal excellence with their learning at Redlands.

My sincere thanks to members of the RPFA who have given an incredible amount of time and energy into preparation for the Spring Fair. While it was disappointing that the weather thwarted our plans last Saturday, the logistical work in planning for the Fair to occur on Senior Campus will be utilised when the new date is selected.

We are running an optional Friday morning training session for keen players or students that are needing to make up attendance for the season. Reminder students require 80% attendance to meet the requirements for Summer Representative Sport and receive their pockets. There are a number of students that have not attended any training so far this season.

There is a maximum of 16 students and the sign up is via a Google Form (please do not show up without signing the form as the sessions only run if we have confirmed numbers). Sign up will close on Thursday 12pm and an email will be sent out to players on the form to confirm the training. If you do not receive a confirmation email on Thursday night, training will not run on Friday.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.20pm and participate in sport based activities.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

Community Update

We value the relationships we build with our Alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School. I was delighted to attend a number of House Morning Teas this week where current and past House Captains spoke passionately about the strong bonds and connections made while at Redlands.  These important events mark significant milestones in the lives of our Year 12 cohort who have only a few weeks left on campus with us. Go well Class of 2022, you’ve got this. For more information on the House Morning Teas, along with information on the Melbourne Cup Luncheon and alumni reflections please visit the Foundation.

Sustainability is a focus that we pursue with rigorous and disciplined intent at Redlands, across our curriculum, our operations, our resources and our community. A key element of our community sustainability program includes our Worn Up and Second Hand Uniform Sales initiatives.  Our Second Hand Uniform Sales got underway this week with clean, pre-loved uniforms being donated through the Uniform Shop. Uniforms can continue to be dropped off up to and including Friday, 16 September. A sale of these uniforms will be held on the weekend of 17 and 18 September. This Redlands Parent and Friends Association led initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community while raising valuable funds for our means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. My thanks to the army of volunteers and our Uniform Shop for their assistance in delivering this important event.  For more information on this initiative, along with an update on the  Spring Fair and upcoming community events, please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

House Morning Teas for Yr 12

It was wonderful to celebrate with Yr 12 at the annual House Morning Teas this week. Each event was attended by past House Captains and Alumni representatives and students were presented with the gift of a Redlands Rhino.

We were privileged to be joined by Sarah Cowper, former Cowper Sports Captain (Redlander 1972), Cowper Redlander Charlie Rogers (Redlander 2017) visiting from Europe having recently completed her degree at St Andrews in Scotland, aspiring actor Hunter Auld (Cowper Captain 2021) and Rebecca Faurby (Dumolo Captain 2019) currently studying at ANU. Messages of support and the importance of staying connected with each other beyond the school gates were shared and we wish all students the very best over the coming weeks.

Incredible Memories of Redlands

It was an honour to spend time with Trish Rogers (Redlander 1955) who visited the School with special gifts for the Redlands Archives – her precious science workbook with exquisite scientific hand drawn diagrams, along with her prize books. Trish was the winner in 1954 of the prestigious ‘Nona Dumolo Prize for English Essay Competition’ – and received The Forsyth Saga by John Galsworthy, presented by the ‘Old Girls Union’, which is now known as the Redlander Alumni Association. The Association continues to endow this and several other Prizes to the Yr 12 cohort at Valedictory.

It was wonderful to hear Trish’s memories of Redlands, and the fun that was had in the lower level of Liggins which was used as a Hall for many gathering including school dances. Mischievous boys who were invited to attend these special occasions, would sneak out and turn the lights off in the hall using a switch at one of the Liggins Building, while at the other end stood the formidable Deputy Miss Steele who would turn them on again. Trish continues to love writing and is a life-long learning taking art classes and other opportunities to explore the things in life that she enjoys.

House Spirit Fair

On Thursday 15 September, the Yr 12 Student Leadership Team will be hosting the House Spirit Fair. Through this event Yr 12 hopes to promote House and School spirit while raising funds for the School’s scholarship fund and the class of 2022’s legacy gift.

Students have lots of fun activities planned, including dodgeball, 3v3 basketball, a lip sync battle, live music, the famed chess competition, and more! There will even be a few teacher vs student events, which always draw a crowd. Students are encouraged to gather a group of friends together to form teams, and sign-up via the QR codes provided on the promotion posters. these posters will be located around the school and available in Tutor period.

Online Safety Parent Updates

The recent Redlands Parent CyberSafety session supported parents to more meaningfully engage with, and understand, the complexities around teenagers and technology. At Redlands, staff value the important partnership between parents and the School when it comes to supporting and protecting young people in the digital space. It’s not simply the responsibility of any one entity – the School, the students and the parents share responsibility in this respect.

Two online platforms that parents should be aware of are Discord and BeReal.

Whilst Discord is marketed as a ‘place to hang out’ there is a great deal of highly offensive communication. Launched four years ago as a way for people to communicate while playing video games, Discord is free and accessible from mobile devices and computers. It allows users to talk to friends or strangers in real-time via voice, text or video chat. For these reasons, it is very appealing to young people. However, the chat groups are unmoderated and the language can be quite confronting with use of profanities or unsuitable topics for children/teens as well as enabling them to engage with strangers online. We strongly encourage you to dissuade your teenager from using this platform and if they do currently use it, to engage in regular monitoring, as an important protective factor.

BeReal is fast becoming the latest obsession for Gen Z and has started to make an appearance on the Senior Campus. BeReal was invented in 2020, but according to trending news website Social Media Today, downloads of the app have risen by 315% since the beginning of the year, now ranking fourth in the list of most downloaded social media apps, behind Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest.  BeReal users receive a notification at a random time once a day saying ‘Time to BeReal’. This opens up a two-minute window for the user to post a picture of what they are currently doing. The purpose of this is to capture an authentic, unfiltered snapshot of a user’s life – the opposite of the curated Instagram or SnapChat photos. When posting on BeReal, the app takes a picture using both the front and back camera, so other people can see what the user looks like and where they are. The user can only see other peoples’ posts after they have posted their own.

There are positives and negatives to this platform. Because of the time restraint, photos aren’t as polished or aesthetic and there is less pressure to create the perfect scene and gain approval from followers, which is why it has been marketed as a refreshing way to use social media. Concerningly, BeReal has the possibility to disrupt a student’s concentration and focus, as the prompt appears at any time during the day. The purpose of BeReal image also causes issues with privacy as the post may capture other people in the frame who have not consented to be included in the post. The app also has a SnapMap type feature that allows the user to see where their contacts are throughout the world which may cause further issues for privacy. For these reasons, we also request that parents talk with their teenager about the risks of using BeReal, as we are doing at school via pastoral care conversations during Tutor period.

Kids Giving Back Program

Daniel Benoliel and Luka Gordon participated in the community programs at Kids Giving Back during the July School holidays. These two student are among over 500 young people who produced over 13,500 hot meals, soup, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs and decorated tote bags, with empathetic, positive messages, which were distributed to 13 charities around Sydney. Volunteering in the school holidays was especially valuable as the twice weekly soup kitchen provided almost 1000 servings of soup in the cold and rain, to those who needed warm food and support. The student volunteers were also especially helpful in folding and packing new clothes for over 12,000 vulnerable people, many of whom were affected by this year’s floods. We deeply appreciate their service to others and the kindness they have extended.

Yr 11 Camp

Yr 11 students have been letting us know their preferences for activities they will undertake on Yr 11 Camp in Week 1 of Term 4. An information letter has been emailed, and is available for parents on Pulse. It promises to be an exciting week down at our High Country Campus with activities including cross country skiing, snowshoeing, bushwalking, horse riding, rafting, biking and canoeing.

Please take a few moments to provide our Camp provider, OEG, with your child’s medical details via this link.

Yr 11 Exams

Well done to all of Yr 11 for completing their Yearly Exams. Students will be receiving exam feedback from their subject teachers over the next couple of weeks. This is a good opportunity for Yr 11 to use this feedback to look at areas of improvement in their subject areas as they transition into Yr 12 in Term 4. If students have any concerns about their marks or assessments, they are encouraged to speak directly with their subject teacher or organise a time to meet with their subject teacher outside of class time.

Year 12 Textbooks

Just a reminder that all Year 12 textbooks need to be purchased via Box of Books by tomorrow. If the order is not placed by tomorrow, students will not receive their textbooks for the start of Term 4 (Term 1, Year 12.).

Yr 11 Textiles UpCycle Major Works

Yr 11 Textiles and Design students took on the challenge to upcycle old furnishing into aesthetically pleasing wearable apparel. Each student investigated and explore various fabric testing and decorative techniques. These techniques ranged from laser cutting, digital printing, solvy, machine embroidery, heat gun fabrics and so much more. The practical was supported by folio documentation which showcased their design process and skills using CAD programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Yr 11 Camp Medical Information

As highlighted in the recent Yr 11 Camp Letter, the Yr 11 Camp is coming up from 10-14 October at High Country Campus, Jindabyne. It is essential that you complete the OEG Medical Form at your earliest convenience. Please click the link below to access the OEG medical forms. You may need to create an account. OEG are using a new tool for collecting medical information which we hope will streamline the process. Any parent or carer can create the account to provide information, and only one entry for each student needs to be made.

There is the facility to upload any anaphylaxis, asthma or other medical plans, submit dietary requirements and request a follow up if required. Please declare and provide information on any prescription medications your child will require during the camp.

Vinnies Drive

Yr 9 are running a service project this term that will involve students from across the Secondary School bringing in sanitary items for the homeless men of Sydney.

Could Yr 11 please get behind this cause by bringing in any of the following items:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Band-aids
  • Hand sanitiser

The items will go towards homeless men living in Sydney. It would be great if Yr 10 and Yr 11 students could bring any of these items to school so we are able to package them and give them to people in need.

A collection box will be located in the school office every day during Week 8 this term where you are able to drop off your supplies.

Healthy Relationships and Sex Education by Dr. Tessa Opie Reflection

Last week, Yr 10 students engaged in a Healthy Relationships Workshop led by Dr. Tessa Opie of InYourSkin. Tutor Groups explored healthy sexual relationships, consent, communication do’s and do not’s, impacts of pornography and sexual negotiation.

Feedback from students was positive. They appreciated the information shared, the time dedicated to discussing these topics and being able to share their concerns, their viewpoints, their understandings and clarifications with each other, their Tutors and our PDHPE staff. Conversations continued into this week during Tutor allowing for follow up questions and discussions, feedback and student voice, and to address some of the items that were brought up during the workshop.

A few particular concerns for our young adults include: what to do if a friend experiences sexual assault and what is considered sexual assault, what exactly does consent look like and the new changes in consent laws in NSW. If you are interested in further information on these topics and positive sexual relationships education, consider following Dr. Tessa Opie’s Instagram @inyourskin.co.

Burn Bright Altitude Day 8 September

Today, Burn Bright presenters worked with Yr 10 students from 8:20am until noon delivering the Altitude Program. This program assists students in exploring and developing their own character. As students approach great heights in their academic journey, it’s crucial for students to explore the foundation of their character as this is what guides people in triumphs and challenges. The program includes the skills and reflections needed to achieve long term personal success, focusing on healthy and intentional relationships and the idea that success is cultivated from a strong support network and especially, a strong understanding of one’s character.

The cohort was asked to challenge their own ideas and their own comfort level in having difficult conversations, acknowleding their contribution to the cohort and allowing themselves and their peers to move forward together.

Tomorrow Woman 2 November

In November, we look forward to welcoming Tomorrow Woman to work with our Yr 10 students who identify as she/her.  The Her Code workshop aims to question the confines and expectations of modern womanhood.  Amidst a barrage of confusing messages coming from all angles, depression, anxiety, negative body image and low self-esteem are on the rise in women. Tomorrow Woman creates a space for women to practise their innate voice and learn to rise above social pressures and expectations, valuing being brave over being perfect.

Run by an experienced facilitator from Tomorrow Woman, this signature two hour experiential workshop creates a safe non-judgemental space in the virtual world to explore tricky topics in a relatable way and get to the heart of issues that women are facing every day. They train the skills that enable women to express their authentic selves beyond the room and beyond the screen and live their own version of a woman of tomorrow. Participants leave the space with strengthened resilience, self-confidence and connectedness to their peer group.

Year 9

Arnhem Land

This has been a wonderful year for Yr 9 thus far. Currently with our focus and planning for a Service-Learning Project, the weeks ahead with have an emphasis on Camp preparation.

Weeks 9 & 10 of this term will prepare students practically for what will they need for camp. Building on this, we will delve into the cultural expectations of our students, connection to self, connection to others, and connection to country. There will be strong themes of cultural understanding, for students to develop an awareness of their cultural footprint for developing a respectful relationship with the Yolngu when we arrive. Students will learn how to listen and observe, to practice patience, what Yolngu time means, men and women’s business, kinship and skin names, language, and excitingly, Bungul (Dance Ceremony).

The Tutor Team, Abby and I are incredibly excited about the experience which awaits Year 9, and we do welcome any conversation with you over the next few days if you require this.

Yr 9 Service Learning Project – Vinnies Drive

As part of this Service Learning Project, we are asking students across the school to bring in personal hygiene items to create personal hygiene bags for those in need, however in addition, thought we would also reach out to the parent community to see if we could also ask for further donations.

Donation items include:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Band aids
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Deodorant
  • Soap or body wash
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Small tissue packs
  • Hairbrush/hair ties
  • Sanitary items – pads, tampons and panty liners.

A collection box will be located in the Secondary School Office every day during Week 8-10 this term where you are able to drop off your supplies.

Slam Poetry

Last week 9(O) engaged with a creative writing task to perform Slam? Protest poetry.

Slam! is a big poetry competition that is very popular in the USA in particular.

Ms Beggs’ class took it to heart and did an earnest job, protesting against such issues as Asian stereotyping; abortion rights; the impact of gaming culture on gun violence; and a range of mental health issues.

Some examples of students work:

Martha Sorenson focused on LGBT.

Hugo Baird, Liam Peterson and Zach Borness focused on: Environmental – Australia’s throw-away textile/fashion habits.

Remy Morriss, Freya Kittle and Abbie Sewell focused on self-esteem and anxiety.

Hiro Phillips and Charles Hargrave focused on the pervasive impact of screens on kids – addressing kids to make changes

Father’s Day Coffee Morning

We were delighted to welcome a large number of dads back on campus for our annual Father’s Day Coffee morning. Blessed with blue skies, the event allowed for many parents to be back on campus for the first time in a while and enjoy the opportunity to reconnect with each other and the school. My thanks to our Events Manager, Rebecca Mackay, for her coordination of this important event.

Primary Debating

Congratulations to our Primary A and Primary B Debating teams who have qualified for the Schools Debating Network semi-finals to be held on Friday evening. Both teams have had an incredible year of debating and shown impressive progress across all three competitions.

Primary A, having only lost one debate, are sitting at the top of the table and will debate against Riverview whilst Primary B will take on Wenona.

We wish Fergus, Georgia, Lauren, Eleanor, Aimee, Josh, Apollo, Kate, Ollie, Alexia, Charlie and Ivy the best luck in this knockout stage of the competition.

Yr 3 Camp

Our Yr 3 students are currently enjoying their first Junior School Camp at Vision Valley, a short drive north from Redlands. As I finish this week’s Note Day, I am currently in between sessions with the students who have been thoroughly engaged in a series of outdoor education activities. Many students have shared how they have forged some new friendships and connections with peers by simply being in the same activity group.

We have posted some pictures of the trip so far on the Yr 3 page on Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back at approximately 2.15pm on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the amazing team of teachers here caring for the group. It is a huge responsibility, but the meticulous planning of Mr Latimer and the team has helped with the smooth organisation of the trip yet again.

NAPLAN (Yrs 3 and 5) and Allwell (Yr 6) Assessment Results

Parents in Yrs 3 and 5 should receive your child’s NAPLAN results via post in the coming days. As we have started analysing the data, we are already seeing significant upward trends in our results and encouraging growth. Class teachers are also now reviewing individual student results to further support their planning and focus for each student.

Yr 6 students moving into Yr 7 who sat the recent Allwell Assessments as part of our academic transition program should also receive their results via post. If you do not receive these results in the coming days, please contact Ms Wilson, Junior Campus Administration and Operations Coordinator.

Junior Music Festival Video

As promised, we are thrilled to share the video recording of the 2022 Junior Music Festival School of Rock. As you will see, the quality of performance was outstanding and was such a joy to see our students enjoy performing to their loved ones.

Kids Giving Back

Head of Secondary School, Ms Van de Peer, and I were delighted to receive an email of acknowledgement, recognising Redlands students who had participated in community programs at Kids Giving Back during Term 2 of this year and the recent July school holidays.

These students were among over 500 young people who produced over 13,500 hot meals, soup, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs and decorated tote bags, with empathetic, positive messages, which were distributed to 13 charities around Sydney. Volunteering in the July school holidays was especially valuable as the organisation held a twice weekly soup kitchen, making and handing out almost 1000 servings of soup in the cold and rain, to those who needed warm food and support. Student volunteers were also especially helpful in folding and packing new clothes for over 12,000 vulnerable people, many of whom were affected by this year’s floods. These types of letters truly highlight how our students are living our School Values and I am thrilled to acknowledge Yr 5 students, Matt Sinpraseuth and Sasha Gordon. I will also make mention of their service in our next assembly.

R U OK Day

In our assembly, our student wellbeing leaders shared the significance of R U OK Day in our community and how we look out for each other. Sometimes, the messages can have greater impact coming from other students and in particular, the students talked about the importance of this being a conversation starter all year round and not just on this date when we shine more of a light on its significance.

No Playing on Equipment After School

Please can I remind all parents that as per the very clear signage, the various play equipment and oval are out of bounds for students after school, unless in a supervised activity with Redlands staff such as our After School Care program or one of our sports offerings. We have had concerns raised of students running around the campus unsupervised whilst parents are chatting in the piazza and there has also been challenges distinguishing between these students and those registered for our After School Care program. Thank you for your immediate attention and I will also remind students about this in our next assembly.

Code Camp – Holiday Camp 27 – 29 September (Yrs 2-6)

We are delighted to partner again with Code Camp to host an exclusive holiday program for Redlands students in Yrs 2-6 to design, code, problem solve and become storytellers and creators of technology, by creating games, websites, music and videos or flying drones! The program will take place in the first week of the September holiday break and booking information including an early bird rate are on the flyer below.

Father’s Day

Thank you to all the dads who came to our Junior Campus Father’s Day coffee morning on Tuesday. The coffee was flowing as was the conversation in the Piazza. It was truly a special time to welcome you all back to the campus and well done to the dads who dared to show their skipping abilities.

After coffee, our classrooms were buzzing with activity and sharing. Students loved showing their rooms, playing games and most of all spending quality time together with dads.

My favourite part of the morning was watching the dads walk out of the campus proudly wearing their cardboard ties! Thank you all for making the morning so fun and special.

Camp Week

The excitement is growing for the inaugural Prep Camp Week. Hopefully all our families in K -2 have gone onto to Pulse to read the information letters and fill in the permission form. Please let us know if you are experiencing any difficulties with this and we can help you navigate the page.

Students will be wearing their PE uniform on camp days but on other days during the week they are permitted to wear mufti or PE uniforms. Sandshoes are encouraged as the students will be doing a lot of outside activity. Please make sure that your child packs their hat, drink bottle and crunch and sip each day as normal. There are no lunch orders on camp days. Drop off and pick up times are the same throughout the week.

If your child has music lessons throughout the week, these will still go ahead. The music teachers will have access to the timetable and be able to find where your child is for their lesson.

Before we leave on our camp days, the students will be briefed on safety as well as behavioural expectations. If there are any issues or incidents that occur whilst on excursion, the staff member will call parents to pick up their child. We hope this doesn’t happen but as always, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our number one priority.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Celebrating Father’s Day

What a wonderful morning we had at Redlands House welcoming some of the special people in the children’s lives into play with us. The children so enjoyed showing off their preschool and really loved sending time with them engaging in a range of activities. Having everyone join us in the playground for our morning song was extra special and demonstrates to the children your value for their learning and education.

Redlands House Security

Please be aware that from now on the Redlands House black gate will remain closed at all times and will need to be opened by families as they enter and depart the Preschool. This gate as of late remained open, to assist with COVID protocols, but we now feel it is time to return to a more normal safety procedures.

Kaleidoscope Science Incursion

Once again, we welcomed Mitch from Kaleidoscope Science to the Redlands House. All of the Transition Gold and Senior students had the chance to experiment with a variety of resources. Science is about discovering the world, finding patterns and wondering “why?” This immersive workshop gives our early learners a safe, exciting and wonder-filled environment in which to explore, discover and be young scientists. The workshop features over twenty hands-on experiments designed to engage the senses plus an entertaining final show from Mitch that brings it all together

HSC Practical Examinations

We wish our Yr 12 HSC Music 1 & 2 students all the very best as they head into their external practicals across Weeks 8 & 9. You’ve worked hard, and we are confident that as you focus on making your best music on the day, the rest will fall into place. Cheering for you!

AMEB Examinations

We commenced the current round of practical AMEB exams on Monday and would like to wish all candidates the very best in their preparations. From Preliminary grade to Certificate of Music, we have a total of 58 students doing a practical exam in September (not to mention dozens of musicianship exams across the year too!) We also acknowledge the enormous efforts of Mrs Jacqueline McGlade for making the arrangements for the exams and our wonderful team of tutors who prepare our students so well for these opportunities.

Spotlight on Yr 5 Curriculum Music

This term Yr 5 are immersing themselves in the ‘Create and Sing’ Carmen experience from the Royal Opera House in London. Students are learning the art of expressive singing, are exploring the dramatic world of opera and are consolidating ensembles skills of singing together and telling a story through song. With a focus on three songs from Bizet’s opera Carmen (Habanera, Toreador and Children’s Chorus) students are enjoying the deep dive into the wonderful world of Opera!

Term 3 Composition Focus

Our Yr 12 composers are in the final stages of producing their final NESA / IB composition recordings, and Yrs 8-10 Music elective students are bringing their composition assessments home in Week 8, with some exciting explorations happening in the realms of Australian, Romantic & 20th/21st Century music styles.

On the theme of Composition in Term 3, we thank all those who submitted songs and works for consideration for the Redlands EP 2023! The panel are delighted by the record number of submissions and are busily making the hard decisions as to whose marvellous composition will win the prize of being Studio Recorded / Produced for release in 2023!
