Why the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund?

This endowment fund provides opportunities to exceptional all-rounder students, who otherwise may not have the financial resources to attend Redlands. Currently, the fund has assets to provide four full-time scholarships, with a long-term goal to grant one means-tested full-time scholarship in the Secondary School annually.

During the holidays our Senior Cowper House Captains, Katina and Christian, had the opportunity to interview Redlander Sarah Cowper, who was the Sports Captain for Cowper in 1972.

Her surname is not a coincidence. Sarah’s great grandfather was for many years the Honorary Treasurer of the SCEGGS Group of Schools and after whom the house was named. The Cowper badge comprises a shield azure with three gold bezants. Bezants are ancient gold coins of Byzantine and on the badge they stand for Treasurership.

Q: How has the school changed since you attended Redlands?

There are so many different things you can do now at school which is different to when I attended Redlands – listening to you talk about Theatre Sports and Gala Arts, and the fact that now everyone is a Prefect and has the opportunity to lead and perform duties is very different and that’s great.

Class sizes are much larger too. The buildings and facilities have changed and look amazing with the state of the art building, and wonderful music rooms, and the gym.

When I was at school, the main playing field was Forsyth Park and we would hop on the bus for sports training. The sports carnival was held at Mosman Oval, and although there were running races we also did novelty races like egg and spoon and tunnel ball.

Q: How many sports teachers were there?

Not many. Probably 3, part time.

But department teachers would sometimes coach sport. So my English Teacher was my Hockey Teacher. She was a very good teacher.

Q: What are some of your fondest memories of Redlands?

I loved being the Cowper Sports Captain and a lot of my fondest memories involve sport, especially hockey which I went on played after school in first grade for North Sydney and Manly.

However, I also remember mentoring the young ones in Year 7 and 8, and they used to look up to me and I would take time out to help them. I was very proud to be able to do that.

My own year was fun as well! Always that healthy competition amongst the Houses.

We would like to thank Sarah for her time, and also for sharing some wonderful ‘home movies’ with footage of the school from her time here.
