Issue 23 2022 Term 3 Week 4 - 11 Aug 2022

From the Principal

As a physics educator, I am very much looking forward to introducing Professor Geraint F. Lewis, University of Sydney, to speak to students and staff on Friday. Professor Lewis’ research focuses on cosmology, gravitational lensing and galactic cannibalism, all with the goal of unravelling the dark side of the universe. He has published more than four hundred articles in astrophysics, as well as speaking to varied audiences on cosmology and the nature of the universe. He is visiting Redlands as an introduction to next week’s Secondary School Science Week celebrations, which include the opportunity for students and parents to view the night sky through the School’s telescopes from the roof of the Redlands Learning Hub (link to register). A range of other interesting activities include; a forensic science CSI session, viewing the planetarium, a guest speaker on solar energy, breakfast with a range of scientists, the Science Fair and the Year 12 HSC students presenting their Science Extension Research Projects.

There are also a number of exciting STEAM Week events and speakers scheduled on Junior Campus next week including Dr Noushin Nasiri, Head of NanoTech Laboratory at Macquarie University who will present to students at the Junior School Assembly and wildlife scientist Dr Vanessa Piotta who is presenting to Preparatory School students and parents next Friday morning.

Two recent Junior School events demonstrated the joy, connection and spirit of our students, who embrace the range of opportunities available to them. Last Thursday’s Junior Music Festival was a memorable celebration of the gift of music and it was moving to see so many students enjoy being on stage together to perform. It was also special to once again have parents involved in the audience. Student agency and leadership is evident across the School and in true Redlands style, the Junior School Arts Captains, Leo Campbell and Ina Guan, confidently compared the event with humour, energy and pride.

The spirit from the event seemed to carry over into the Junior School Athletics Carnival this week, with spontaneous group dancing and singing in Houses, while waiting for the final results to be confirmed and celebrated. What struck me most was the inclusiveness of the students and how they felt comfortable to have fun together in the moment. It will remain with me as a very fond memory, highlighting the positive culture of Redlands. What was also impressive was the fact that students still had the energy to sing and dance after a full day of competition. Congratulations to Roseby House for their victory on the day.

Mr Stephen Webber

Photo Caption: The Junior School Music festival was a resounding success and showcased some of the brilliant musical talent we have here at Redlands, well done to all involved!

Community Update

We are now only weeks away from launching the new Pulse environment. Our teams are busy testing the enhancements made and new features added, in alignment with the feedback received from our community.  Our new digital environment will improve our communications, simplify and centralise information and deliver a new personalised and customisable experience for all users.

The preparation for transition to our new digital experience commenced with the provision of individual accounts and logins for parents and carers, providing enhanced protection of personal and family information. As we move through each stage of the project, we will keep you informed of the enhancements made and provide you with support and guidance throughout. Thank you for your feedback within this important project and we encourage and welcome a continued engagement with our community as the enhancements go live. We look forward to sharing the new Pulse environment with you later this term.

Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to put their hand up in support of Spring Fair. Tickets are now on sale! Pre-purchase wristbands and coupons here to receive a special discount. Further details on the Spring fair can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of parent and carer events that connect our community.

During the holidays our Senior Cowper House Captains, Katina and Christian, had the opportunity to interview Redlander Sarah Cowper, who was the Sports Captain for Cowper in 1972.

Her surname is not a coincidence. Sarah’s great grandfather was for many years the Honorary Treasurer of the SCEGGS Group of Schools and after whom the house was named. The Cowper badge comprises a shield azure with three gold bezants. Bezants are ancient gold coins of Byzantine and on the badge they stand for Treasurership.

Q: How has the school changed since you attended Redlands?

There are so many different things you can do now at school which is different to when I attended Redlands – listening to you talk about Theatre Sports and Gala Arts, and the fact that now everyone is a Prefect and has the opportunity to lead and perform duties is very different and that’s great.

Class sizes are much larger too. The buildings and facilities have changed and look amazing with the state of the art building, and wonderful music rooms, and the gym.

When I was at school, the main playing field was Forsyth Park and we would hop on the bus for sports training. The sports carnival was held at Mosman Oval, and although there were running races we also did novelty races like egg and spoon and tunnel ball.

Q: How many sports teachers were there?

Not many. Probably 3, part time.

But department teachers would sometimes coach sport. So my English Teacher was my Hockey Teacher. She was a very good teacher.

Q: What are some of your fondest memories of Redlands?

I loved being the Cowper Sports Captain and a lot of my fondest memories involve sport, especially hockey which I went on played after school in first grade for North Sydney and Manly.

However, I also remember mentoring the young ones in Year 7 and 8, and they used to look up to me and I would take time out to help them. I was very proud to be able to do that.

My own year was fun as well! Always that healthy competition amongst the Houses.

We would like to thank Sarah for her time, and also for sharing some wonderful ‘home movies’ with footage of the school from her time here.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Julia Murphy, Daniel Close, Hadley Wintle, Marli Prado and Momo Elsworth who represented Redlands at the NSW Japanese Speech Contest via Zoom last weekend.

The aims of the contest were to encourage learners who are studying Japanese to showcase their language skills in a challenging context, and to advocate Japanese language learning in general.

Momo finished in 1st place and Marli finished in 2nd place!

Freya Gait (Yr 11) has been advocating for change and increased coverage of women’s sport in Australia

She has set up a petition to gather support and raise awareness in her pursuit to increase the coverage of women’s sport in Australia.

It’s something she’s been working on for a while and has already made some progress as she has at least one Hockeyroo signed so far and has now been invited to meet the SMH next week to discuss ideas with them.

Student Leadership Voting

Student leadership voting for 2022/2023 has now closed and we move into the next stage of the process with short-listing and interviews. Congratulations to the many Yr 11 students who nominated themselves and to the entire Redlands community for voting.

Trial Examinations

It was wonderful to see Yr 12 emerge from their study chrysalis on Monday for the Trial Examinations. There were certainly some nerves, lots of talking and some nervous laughter as they waited to move into the examination rooms in the Learning Hub. By all accounts the exams were ‘okay’ and ‘not as bad as I thought’ but we also heard ‘I forgot my quotes’ and ‘I ran out of time for the conclusion’ which is all to be expected at this stage in the IB and HSC year. Our Yr 12 students are on track for personal and collective success and we are very proud of their commitments. Dean of HSC Ms Lucy Benjamin, Dean of IB Mr Darren Taylor and Dean of Studies (7-10) Mrs Anna-Marie Rolon, were all available to counsel, provide last minute reassurance and advice, before the students ‘embraced’ the first day. Since then, the week of Trial Examinations has run smoothly and a range of staff have stepped in and out of the Learning Hub to galvanise the students as they move through one of the final stages of their school journey.

Jeans for Genes

Thank you all for your support once again this year! Redlands community had amazing contribution to Jeans for Genes Day this year. In total, Redlands has raised: $11k, surpassing their target and making us, once again, the number 1 School!

A special thank you goes to:

  • Y7 MB tutor group for Junior school bake sale with Yr 6Y class
  • Sausage sizzle success was a collaboration of Y7 MB, Service Captains Alex and Charlotte and Yr 12 Captains
  • Alex and Charlotte did an amazing job as Service Captains to promote this entire event
  • Rachael Riley and Sam O’Leary helped with cooking sausage sizzle – bbq’ers extraordinaire!
  • Sensei Abe for her stellar leadership of this initiative

Student Voice and Wellbeing

Over the past week, our Secondary School students have been using their voices in a variety of ways. They have been speaking in video content for the new Redlands Website, sharing their experiences in Middle Leader Meetings with staff, speaking at assemblies and advocating for change in their communities.

The staff, who always have the students’ wellbeing as their key priority, have been utilising the students’ experiences to discuss, review and plan for the future. On Monday afternoons, the Redlands Secondary School staff have meetings and this week we held a Pastoral Meeting with teams across Yr 7 to 12. As a starter exercise, all of our Pastoral Year Teams commenced by viewing the following video, collated by Dean of Students, Ms Jansons, and featuring a range of students from across the pastoral setting.

We’d love for you to hear what we hear every day!

You can watch the Student Voice Video here:

Our Yr 9 Pastoral Program is a wonderful example of how our Wellbeing leaders and Tutors support students in this space.

Term 3

Focus

Week 1 to 3

iGrow Conversations – Yr 9 students have 1:1 conversations with their Tutor using their ‘tree’ as a stimulus for provocation and questioning. Data is used to raise questions, not make judgements.

Students have really engaged with this process, utilising iGrow data to compose their Semester 2 process-goals

Week 4 to 5

Yr 9 have the opportunity to authentically engage with our community in a Service Learning Module.

Students actively engage with researching and participating in an offsite 2-day Service Learning program supporting a chosen charity.

Throughout Term 3 and 4, students work in small groups during Tutor Time to prepare, plan and consolidate their understanding of their service learning focus area.

Key areas of focus:

 Environmental Sustainability

  • Homelessness
  • Elderly
  • Children and young people
  • Families

Following the 2-day offsite program, students will collaborate on an internal presentation and ‘Learning Walk’ with invited School Executive and members of the Charity groups from the Service Learning Projects.

Winter School Update

Last week, I had the pleasure of spending a few days with the incredible group of Yr 10 students attending 2022 Winter School at the Redlands High Country Campus in Jindabyne. Numerous comments from the staff included how impressed they were with the students in attendance. Their willingness to step up and support their peers, support the staff, take ownership for their mistakes and their enthusiasm in contributing to team tasks were mentioned on several occasions. The students used class time wisely, spent their evening study time attending to upcoming assignments and students were embracing their time on the snow and their freedom and responsibilities in a dorm setting.

Several student comments were similar to these below:

” I realise how lucky I am to have this opportunity and I’m very thankful for this experience”

” I love the atmosphere at Winter School and how we support one another”

” I realise the new level of expectation and responsibility that comes along with this opportunity and am enjoying this new experience”

” The teachers and staff down here are really incredible and supportive, they are so nice!”

For me, I was extremely impressed with the genuine connections students made without their cell phones at dinner, their focus in completing class tasks when given individual time and their general ownership over keeping their space clean, their equipment in order and responsibly managing their intense timetable. I was able to join the beginners group and felt very much behind the incredible progress this group had already made in a short week on the snow. It has been a successful start to the term and I look forward to hearing about their progress and growth as the term unfolds.

Discord is a free communications app initially created by online gamers as a platform for other gamers to chat together while playing.

Discord is a free communications app initially created by online gamers as a platform for other gamers to chat together while playing. It has since evolved to be used by communities of almost any interest, ranging from friends wanting to catch up or stay in touch to special interest groups where members can come together and feel connected with like-minded individuals. Targeted towards teens and adults, users communicate with each other via voice, video, or text.

How is Discord downloaded and set up?

Discord can be downloaded onto Android and iOS devices, or accessed via a web browser. The app setup is relatively straightforward. Once downloaded, the user is required to provide either an email address or phone number before being invited to create their own username (real name not required) and password. The app signup requests a date of birth to determine the user’s age; however, it does not verify the input. Users can tick a check box authorization to allow anyone who has their mobile number stored in their contacts to find them. Lastly, a valid phone number, verified with a six-digit code, is required to finalize the app signup.

How does Discord work?

Discord users interact either by creating a server based around a topic of interest and inviting contacts to join, or by joining an established server through a contact invitation.

Servers are virtual spaces created within Discord by individual users based on a particular interest or specific purpose. Most servers are invite-only and consist of friends and contacts who form a group or community where members connect, hang out, message, chat, listen to music, game, or catch up with others of like mind. There are also a limited number of public servers that don’t require an invitation to join.

To help keep the server organized, topic categories are broadly divided into text or voice channels, then further into more specific channels relating to the topic. It is up to the server creator, and any administrators they appoint, to set up and manage the individual verification and authentication levels, special permissions, access to chats and channels, member roles, and content safety filters. Having a clear set of rules for behavior on each server is recommended but not enforced.

As Discord is a group chatting platform, not a social media platform, the content is entirely user-generated and driven by shared interests, not algorithms. The Discord community guidelines make it very clear that although they can monitor server content, they are under no obligation to do so. Consequently, any content uploaded to the server is the responsibility of the server administrators to ensure it meets the platform’s protocols.

Individual Discord users control their own safety and privacy settings, including who they interact with and how they interact, and they have the option to opt-out of electronic communication from Discord should they wish. Additionally, users can integrate Discord with several different apps and games.

How do children of different ages typically use Discord?

Discord is an incredibly popular app amongst young people as it provides an easy way for them to connect with their peers. Upper primary school children typically use it to stream and verbally communicate with friends while gaming. They also like using the text-to-speech and audio message options for general chats.

Teenagers primarily use Discord to communicate during gaming or to chat with friends, but they also use it for research. For example, teens will often join public or large private servers to learn more about a particular game, skill, or interest, such as cryptocurrency trading.

Is Discord safe?

Keep Me Safe mode

Discord’s creators aim for all users to have a positive experience on their platform; however, parents should be aware that Discord has very limited parental control features. To help protect their teen, parents should ensure that KMS (keep me safe) mode is enabled on their teen’s account. This means that Discord will automatically scan all DMs sent and filter out any inappropriate content. It is against the platform’s policy to share login details with anyone (including parents). Should they wish to delete their teen’s account, an email must be sent to Discord directly from the email address used to create the account, which could be problematic.

Interacting with strangers

Because Discord permits pseudonyms, a user can have an account without disclosing their true identity. Therefore, there is a genuine possibility that users could be misrepresenting themselves, exposing teens to grooming, predators and other potential online dangers.

Inappropriate content

The platform does have some safety features available for use by individuals and server administrators (including explicit media filters), but their implementation is entirely discretionary. The terms and conditions and community guidelines featured on Discord’s website outline a stringent set of rules that prohibit, among other things, the posting of objectionable material, bullying, intimidation, and offensive behavior. They also provide security warnings and suggestions for safe usage of the platform; however, these are not immediately obvious unless sought out. There is a real potential that users may hear or view inappropriate content, particularly if their account or the server does not have safety and explicit content filters set up correctly. It is up to users to report anything on the platform that does not meet the terms and conditions or community guidelines for Discord to investigate.

Incident reports

Discord provides a transparency report on their website covering statistics from the previous six months so parents can view the number and nature of incident reports made by users, the action rates taken, and the number of servers and accounts removed from the platform.

Adult content

All channels featuring adult content are required to have an NSFW (not safe for work) label, and any user accessing one of these channels will be greeted with a pop-up message advising them of the adult content and asking if they are over 18 years of age. Again, a positive response is not verified.

What is the minimum age to use Discord?

Discord requires users to be 13+ or the minimum age for digital consent in the user’s country (whichever is greater) to use the platform. Users aged between 13 and the age of majority in their country are required to have their legal guardian read and agree to Discord’s terms and conditions. Due to the diverse nature of content that could be discovered on the app (some of which is not appropriate for young users) and safety concerns, we recommend that users be at least 16 years of age and that there be a high level of parental supervision.

How can I make Discord safer for my teenager?

There are several things parents can do to help their teen minimize safety risks on Discord. Go through the terms and conditions and community guidelines together to help them understand exactly what is and isn’t acceptable and what they should do if they ever feel unsafe. Encourage them only to accept friend requests from, and join servers with, people they know and trust. Make sure they have set up the explicit content and safety filters in their account. Utilize the operating system’s parental controls on their device.

How much does Discord cost?

The basic Discord platform is free to use. However, for extra and special server features, users can upgrade to Discord Nitro (USD99.99 per year or USD9.99 per month) or purchase ‘Server Boosting’ (costs vary).

Jeans for Genes Fundraising

Last Friday, in recognition of Jeans for Genes Day, 7 McDouall Blue organised a bake sale with students from 6Y in the Junior School. Our Yr 7 students also assisted with the sausage sizzle, preparing food and selling sausages. Collectively, these students raised $1280.50, making Redlands the highest School Fundraiser this year. It was wonderful to see our students commit to this cause with such enthusiasm.

Public Speaking Program

Ms Vyvian Kang is launching a Public Speaking Program which is open to students in Yrs 7-10. I have encouraged Yr7 students to express their interest in the program, as public speaking is a skill that will serve students well for their whole life, no matter the career path they take. It helps to build confidence, persuasive speaking skills and raise awareness of global issues. Students in the program will also have the opportunity to participate in various competitions.

If your son or daughter wishes to express their interest, there is a form on our Yr 7 Pastoral iLearn Page.

Head of Junior School

Junior Music Festival

This time last week, we were preparing for the return of the Junior Music Festival and it certainly did not disappoint. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and after a two-year hiatus, this certainly rang true for the Junior Music Festival and School of Rock had the audience tapping their feet to the sounds of the 80s!

Above everything, the sheer joy of the students performing was incredibly tangible and I had goosebumps at numerous times during the show, feeling the depth and quality of the performances. Of course, we know that this only happens with the expert guidance of some exceptional teachers and tutors, and we are blessed to have an abundance of these within our Music team, ably supported by the administrative talents of Jacqueline McGlade. I extend my gratitude to our Music teaching staff: Mrs Sue Anderson, Mr Joseph Montz, Ms Stephanie McInnes, Ms Nicole Roberts and Junior Campus Music Coordinator, Mrs Katherine Moses, who leads the team with grace, humility, and assuredness. As they also acknowledged, the collaboration and support of so many other Redlands staff before and during the show all culminated in the spectacle that we were able to enjoy.

The show was professionally recorded and in due course, this will be shared with families.

 Athletics Carnival

Another day, another whole of Junior School event, and yesterday saw the Sports department take the lead in organising another highly enjoyable and professionally run Athletics Carnival for the students to enjoy and participate in.

After the COVID restrictions of last year’s carnival, it was wonderful to feel the energy and hear the chants from the students in supporting one another and their Houses. Similar to the Music Festival, the opportunity for every Junior School student to be part of this event is important and as well as the quality of performance we saw throughout the day, of equal mention was the efforts of every student to simply try their best for themselves and their House and as I chatted to many students in the stands, so many mentioned that they had achieved personal bests.

And as for the spontaneous singing and dancing as we awaited the final scores, this was pure, unadulterated joy and spoke volumes for the environment that our students are an integral part of here at Redlands.

Congratulations to Roseby House who ended up victorious on the day and my thanks to Mr Dunne and Mr Sharma from Sport, ably assisted by sports coaches and Junior School staff to create another memorable day for the students.

Yr 5 Bathurst

In between the Music Festival and the Athletics Carnival, Year 5 enjoyed an experiential learning opportunity in their overnight excursion to Bathurst and Hill End connected to their study of the Gold Rush era. It was amazing to hear the descriptive details that the students were able to recall from the trip as they ‘lived’ the life on the 1850s goldfields. My thanks to the Year 5 teachers and Miss Donoghue for looking after the students and to Mr Brakell for his coordination and organisation of this trip.

$11,281 raised on Jeans for Genes Day!

As the Redlands community arrived last Friday morning donning the denim in support of Jeans for Genes Day, little did anyone know of the phenomenal amount that we would raise to support this research as we became the no.1 school in Australia for their fundraising this year.

Supported by a sausage sizzle on the Senior Campus, a bake sale in the Junior School, and sizeable donations across K-12, our Redlands community raised a staggering $11,281!

Thank you to all who contributed and it was wonderful to hear Ari Abe-Apostolou (Year 6) share his personal journey in Year 6 assembly and explain where the monies raised would assist further research.

Grandparents & Special Friends Day – Friday 26 August

The long-awaited return of Grandparents & Special Friends Day takes place on Friday 26 August and as per the invitation, Junior School guests should arrive at 11.15 where they will be guided towards classrooms. It is important that guests do not arrive too early as our Preschool and Prep special guests will be here before and parking will be at a premium.

For grandparents who are here for both the Preschool/Prep event and then the Junior School event, we will organise a morning tea to keep up the energy levels needed!

Book Week 2022 (22-26 August)

We are all set for Book Week later this term and have secured acclaimed author, Mark Greenwood, to speak to each year group. Mrs Wiebe will be providing a sheet of Children’s Book Week Council activities that students might also like to take part in.

We will again have a dress up theme on Friday 26 August and this year’s theme is “Dreaming with eyes open” so students are encouraged to dress up as something or somebody they dream of being.

The students will be introduced to the books on the Children’s Book Council shortlist and explore the Book Week theme in their library lessons with Mrs Wiebe.

Duty of Care – Parent support needed

We have had a few recent cases of students being picked up early and not attending after school activities such as Dance, Drama or Clubs. Whilst this is fine, the challenge and concerns arise when staff running those activities are not notified and time is spent looking for these students. Thank you for your support in this important duty of care matter.

Spring Fair

If you haven’t already heard, Redlands’ Spring Fair is back on Saturday 3 September with tons of food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and depth of students’ art-related activities. Tickets are now on sale! Pre-purchase wristbands and coupons here to receive a special discount. Orders before 26 Aug can be delivered directly to your child’s classroom.

Lost Property

Our lost property area has been growing and Mrs Fairfax has spent significant time trying to return belongings this week. One of the biggest challenges and concerns is just how much of our lost property (clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles are simply not named.  We would be grateful if you could ensure that this is addressed and is the perfect job for each student to undertake at home. If you are looking for unnamed clothing, do contact Mrs Fairfax directly via email or pop in as she has stored these in a separate area.

Dr Vanessa Pirotta is a wildlife scientist, science communicator and woman in STEM. Vanessa’s research uses innovative technologies for wildlife conservation. Her zoological background has taken her around the world for wildlife research. She is a passionate and experienced science communicator who loves making science accessible. Vanessa has represented Australia internationally as the national winner of a world-renowned science communication competition known as FameLab, where she placed second in the world. We are very excited to welcome Vanessa to the Prep School.

Week 6 Book Week

22-26 August

A message from our Librarian, Mrs Roberts

Book Week is fast approaching! This is a very exciting time for the students and staff as they get to celebrate all the good things about books and reading. It is a time too, for you to talk about books you liked as a child, Book Week activities that you took part in, to talk about the role of books and reading in your life and a time to do lots of shared reading.

At school we will celebrate in many ways. We will hear from authors and illustrators who have already published books. We will find out who has won prizes for the best picture books published in Australia last year. We will do even more reading than usual in our classrooms and… on Friday 26th August, we will dress up as someone we admire or aspire to be! It may be an actual person or a generic occupation, such as an artist, a fireman, a scientist, or a ballerina. Please ensure that you have talked to your child about who they have decided to be, what they will need to dress as that person and that they can tell everyone about why they admire them. If they have a book that helped them to decide, they may like to bring it too.

This year’s Parade will occur on Grandparents Day, which is also a special time for your child so if grandparents are visiting you or school, please include them in your child’s excitement about who they are dressing as. There will be a chance in the afternoon before picking up to come in and see your child’s class in their dress ups!

The Premier’s Reading Challenge Login site will close next week, so if you do plan to complete this challenge and still have books to enter for your child, please do this now. The certificates of completion will then be finalised, and they will be sent to us by the end of term 4. Thank you to everyone who read thirty books to or with their child. I hope you enjoyed that bonding time and found some new favourite books.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

The long-awaited return of Grandparents & Special Friends Day takes place on Friday 26 August and as per the invitation, Prep and RH guests should arrive in the Prep School no earlier than 9.00am where they will be guided towards the Book Parade seating on the oval. They will then watch the Parade and spend some time in classrooms until 10.30am.

For grandparents who are here for both the Preschool/Prep event and then the Junior School event, we will organise a morning tea to keep up the energy levels needed!

Water Polo

The Inter Water Polo teams are continuing to improve with each week they play, their season will continue into the summer season (with players only playing games and not having training), the last Thursday training for Water Polo will be Thursday 18 August, with summer sport starting in Term 3, Week 6.

Rugby

Redlands Rugby enjoyed an action-packed weekend of Rugby with matches for our Under 13s, Under 14s and our Opens against divisional rival St Andrews Cathedral School. With all matches played at our spiritual home of Campbell Field Macquarie, it was fantastic to see the number of parents, carers and other students who turned up to watch.

Our Under 13s, undefeated so far this season, started the day off in fine form with Danny Gordon stepping and weaving through defenders to score a try off the very first kick off!! This was immediately followed up by a brilliant run from Austin Durrant who, with a number of SACS players in his wake, sprinted through the midfield to score another quick try for Redlands. This set of a wave of tries for Redlands with Danny Gordon scoring another along with Raf Rolon, Rupert Perry and also Chase Hindmarsh also getting in on the action. What is so special about this Under 13 group is how they defend as a group and how they work together in attack and defence. It was fantastic to see players like Archie Farrell, Atticus Mitford-Burgess and Hector Maxwell get so involved with their tackles and ball carries. These boys set the platform for many of our tries, with tough yards through the middle creating space for our speed out wide.

Special mention must go to Samuel Haley who, with his grandparents and family all on the sideline, celebrated his birthday in true Redlands style. With a great run by Chase, backed up by quick ball movement from our half back Charlie Reeves, Sam exploded into in the clear and accelerated away from the defence, only stopping when he was able to dot the ball down behind for a try to Redlands. Sam continued to celebrate his birthday in the second half with a number of storming carries in attack and, with a try to Rupert Perry on the whistle, Sam would have easily converted the kick from in front had it not been for a rogue gust of wind that whipped the ball away in the last second.

Redlands 66 – SACS 0

Following on from this wonderful match, our Opens had the opportunity to compete against SACS in a modified 10s match. This allowed both teams to play some incredible running rugby with Josh Hicks jumping onto the scoreboard almost immediately. What followed was an extremely back and forth match, with both teams slugging it out with some amazing one on one tackles. In the second half, despite losing two of our players to injury, Redlands began to really push back against SACS. With tries to Jack Forrest and Ellery Prescott, Redlands was only down by a few points. SACS had some wonderful ball carriers in their team and, with an error from Redlands in the back field, were able to capitalise with a quick try to get that lead out to double digits. Many teams, already fatigued, would have dropped their heads and conceded but, it is a testament to this squad and the players coming through it, when we saw how our boys bounced back and fought to the bitter end. On weary legs, Vincas Lapinskas willed himself into his carries, smashing SACS players aside. Quick thinking from Samuel Chubbs led to a kick going through and, with a brilliant chase from Sam, the ball bounced perfectly into his waiting arms. A perfect 10 dive under the posts meant the scores finished as a narrow loss for Redlands but the heart shown by this group should be an inspiration to the rest of our program.

The Under 14s were next up and, having seen the efforts of our Opens and Under 13s, they were pumped. Henry Preece, supported by Hudson Kraus, led his troops out onto the field, the cheers of the tunnel echoing in their ears. With all that build up, it was not surprising to see our Under 14s dominate the opposition running away with an easy victory. This is a group of players who are continuing to develop as a group and, with new players coming into the squad for this year, the cohesiveness across the team is fantastic to see. Finn O’Sullivan was everywhere in attack, weaving through the defence like it was nothing. Wonderful work from Jack Koster and Otto Eden, in and around the rucks, allowed our attack to have such an easy platform to launch from.

Special mention for the Under 14s must go to Hudson Kraus. To watch the effort this boy shows in defence is a sight to behold and I know for a fact some of the SACS boys are still nursing bumps and bruises from where Hudson hit them. This type of effort is a joy to watch and I could not be prouder of how Hudson has trained this year.

As a program, we now look to the last two weeks of the competition with matches this weekend against the always strong CCGS. For our Under 13s this clash of the only two undefeated teams will decide the ladder. Let’s get around that first game as a program and support these boys.

8:30am Kick Off – Under 13s start the day. Look forward to seeing you all there.

We will be commencing basketball trials in Term 3, Week 6. You can find the preliminary basketball information on the Redlands Pulse – Basketball Page for all of the key dates and details for the upcoming season. We hope you are looking forward to the 2022/23 Basketball Season!

Athletics Carnival

Our annual Junior School Athletics carnival took place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in beautiful conditions on Wednesday. In the final of our big 3 carnivals there was much excitement leading up to the day from all students. Credit to all students for their enthusiasm and participation both in the stands with war cries and cheering and on the track. Looking at the data the Athlete participation rate was 20% higher than the previous year which is excellent. Special mention must be made to those students who nominated to run in the 400m event as we had 4 hears across the age groups.

There was some great house spirit being demonstrated throughout the day. The house that stood out in this area was Cowper House led by Josh Svensson and Georgia Grace who sung and cheered their way to some bonus house spirit points including winning the war cry competition judged by Ms Wilson and Ms Jefferies.

With the entrant number system student used in conjunction with the timing gates and photo finish students were able to see their times and overall rankings on the digital score board after they finished their race. I was also impressed with how students knew their entrant number or had it on their arm as this meant we avoided any issues that would have resulted in races being re-run. This also allowed relay teams to be selected based on the times in the heats. The inclusion of the 50m sprint on the back straight allowed for greater participation and I was extremely impressed with the number of students who also opted in for this event at the end of a long days meet. In pre marshalling we had our way tug of war competition with Roseby winning quite a few of the age group competitions. Thanks to those Year 6 students who assisted here.

New Records

Congratulation to these new record holders, they will receive a certificate of commendation at our Sports Prize Giving Day next term.

Jake O’Sullivan, Boys 11 Years 200m with a time of 28.91 seconds breaking the record set in 2016. Other records will have published once times have been ratified.

McDouall Senior Girls 4x100m relay also set a new record with a time of 1:02.93 beating the Cowper record from 2020.

A big thank you the way all students looked on the day. Everyone got to wear the house race bibs this year when participating in track events. The ability to identify their peers representing their house from the grandstand really added to the carnival atmosphere. This was evident in our relays held at prior to the presentation.

With Cowper winning the carnival for 5 years in a row there was a huge reaction when Copwer were announced as 4th place.  Congratulations to Roseby House on their win for 2022 led by Zac Holgate and Saskia Jelley who captained the winning house on the day.

And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on a fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

This is a show that has proven itself over and over with a multitude of productions being staged globally. The original Broadway production ran for 722 performances.

AND NOW ITS OUR TURN REDLANDS.

Music

Junior Music Festival

The buzz of 450 Junior School students could be felt around the school last Thursday as students performed exceptionally in the annual Junior Music Festival. Showcasing cohort choral items and cocurricular ensembles, the concert was a thrilling demonstration of student commitment, practice and the joy of performing again after a 2 year hiatus. A particular highlight was the finale, in which all 450 students graced the stage in a triumph of logistics! Performing an Australian Rock Medley arranged by Ms McInnes, students moved the audience, sharing their love of music and the joy in brings. The Music Department are very proud of all students and thank Junior School staff for their contributions to the event. We also congratulate Arts Captains Leo and Ina for their wonderful leadership as comperes. The magic of music is alive and well in the Junior School!
