Music

As Note Day arrives in your inbox this week, 441 Junior School students will be taking to the stage in Dunnet Hall to share their music with each other and a member of their family in the live audience.

Junior Music Festival 2022

The beloved Junior Music Festival is back in force after a 2-year hiatus, themed School of Rock and capably produced by our Head of Junior Campus Music, Ms Katherine Moses. Whilst this afternoon is set to be enormously fun, the students’ excitement even in the lead up to today has been palpable. Joyous singing has been resounding in Music lessons for months now!

I want to honour the work of our Junior Music Teachers and Specialist Music Tutors for enriching the lives of our students in this way – skilfully infusing complex curricular understandings and aural skill foundations within Freddie Mercury songs for the past term! (Like a parent hiding broccoli in a hastily devoured pizza!)   Our Music team are experts at what they do and I’m privileged to see them work their magic year-in, year-out. ‘Thank yous’ are also extended to Mr Guha and our Year 3-6 class teachers who have rallied in generous support of this event also. Today’s event has been a team effort of epic proportions and a testament to the dedication of our Redlands community.

A video is being produced of the event and we look forward to sharing this with families in due course.

Music Enrichment: Composing and Conducting

Further demonstrating the rich opportunities available to Redlands students, Year 11 HSC Music 2 students Joe & Marcus recently composed their first string quartets (both works aptly named ‘String Quartet No. 1’), and the were offered the baton of the String Ensembles on Monday afternoon to workshop these pieces – enriching for conductors, composers and strings players alike.

Senior Instrumental Competition 2022

The Redlands Senior Instrumental Competition for 2022 auditions have flooded in with perhaps our biggest intakes of submissions ever.  Whilst the submissions are now closed, the decision as to who will make it to the 2022 finals will take some deliberating by our audition panel. We look forward to announcing our finalists by late next week.

Yr 12 HSC & IB Performance showcases

Congratulations to our Yr 12 Music students who presented their year’s work for supportive audiences on Monday and Tuesday night. We wish these students all the best as they round the corner of their Yr 12 coursework.

Expert teaching and music-making in action!

We passionately believe that “those that can, should teach”.  As Year 9 launched their enquiry into the Music of the Romantic Period, students were treated to a magnificent ‘up close’ piano recital of the works of Chopin by our own Mr Mathew Owen (finalist in the Teachers’ Guild of NSW awards this year). Rich connections and foundations were laid in support of their own ‘Romantic’ style piano explorations this term. Term 3 represents an arrangement or composition assessment focus for all of our elective Music classes this term, and we can’t wait to see the creative application of learnt ideas that ensues!

Welcome to a New Member of Staff

As Mr Solomon Frank takes a term of leave to focus on his PhD thesis, we are delighted to welcome to Mr Rhys Mottley to our woodwind team (having landed in Australia from New Zealand on Tuesday)!  Rhys is an internationally regarded, tertiary qualified multi-instrumentalist whose contributions as Clarinettist, Saxophonist (and originally as a Jazz / Classical Guitarist) are well established.  A thoughtful and dedicated musician and educator, we are certain Mr Mottley will be a wonderful addition to our team of specialists as he teaches both private students and in ensembles across both campus.

He looks forward to meeting his students soon!  If you are interested in learning Clarinet, there are some remaining places in Mr Mottley’s studio. You will find all our sign up forms on Pulse should you wish to explore these wonderful extra music-making opportunities.

Have a great weekend and Week 4 to come!
