Senior Music Festival Wrapped!
We are so delighted to say that Senior Music Festival (SMF2022) was the joy-bringing event we hoped it would be! From the rousing Beethoven’s 9th massed opening to the 1990’s hip-hop Joyful Joyful at the finale, 180 students roared onto the stage in full life and colour – showing such commitment to their craft and to their collective vision. The audience-turned-choir for YMCA and Piano Man were in splendid voice also!
Yr 12 shone in their final SMF and the Music Captains’ reflections in our post-show celebration yesterday were insightful. Amidst her thanks to tutors and staff, our Captain of Bands, Eden Borrie made a comment that the Music program had been a place where she had ‘grown in confidence and self belief’, and found kindred friends with whom to share her schooling journey over the past six years. This is at the core of why we offer such rich and diverse collaborative music-making opportunities at Redlands – so that every student can find a place to belong and grow as young people.
We are so very proud of our students for their extraordinary work in this year’s Senior Music Festival, and we’re already dreaming for 2023! #EvenGOATer
Year 8 Elective Music | SSO Excursion
In support of our Year 8 explorations of Baroque and Classical periods, both Year 8 elective Music classes enjoyed an excursion to City Recital Hall on Wednesday evening to hear the Sydney Symphony Orchestra offer their concert on the same theme Inspired by Bach. A highlight was the direct address to Redlands students from the concertmaster in his emceeing, making the connection that the Mendelssohn works being performed were written when he was 12 as part of his study of ‘the masters’ – his ‘homework’ if you will! Poignant to our Year 8s who have been exploring fugue-writing this week also.

The return bus buzzed with students making connections to their learning, excited to have shared this remarkable experience altogether.
Junior Campus Music Cocurricular Photos
All students in Years 1-6 who are in a cocurricular ensemble will have their group photos taken in Week 1 of next term on Thursday 21st July. Please ensure students are wearing their full school uniform for the photo.
Junior Music Festival
Hits from Brahms to Queen and everything in between have been filling the corridors this term as students busily prepare for this exciting event! We encourage students to maintain their practice over the break so ensembles return to school refreshed and ready to perform in Week 3. Further details will be distributed next term.
Choral Celebration
“In times of hardship and challenge, we can always look to music to bring people together and make the world a better place…”
…offered one of our young singers as they introduced their curriculum choral item for our annual internal Choral Celebration. Students from Transition Gold to Year 6 performed beautifully in the Choral Celebration concert today, with impressive performances from our curriculum choral program and cocurricular choirs. A highlight was a special combined performance of ‘Sesere Eeye’, a Torres Strait Island song we learnt in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Keep an eye out on Seesaw and Google Classroom for recordings of the performances!
Especial thanks are owed to our wonderful Junior Campus teaching team who have created such a joy-filled culture of singing within our curriculum learning, and to both Katherine Moses (Head of Junior Music) and Nicole Roberts (Head of Choral) for their additional and exemplary leadership to this end.

Music at Winter School
Last year we trialled the offer of occasional ‘Zoom’-based Private Instrumental or Vocal Tuition sessions for Winter School attendees, in order to provide some continuity of learning for their instrumental learning, and we are pleased to offer the same in 2022. Though there are many timetabling logistics to navigate and lessons are not able to be guaranteed, if your child is attending Winter School and you would like us to investigate the possibility of occasional Instrumental or Vocal lessons with your tutor, please use this sign-up form to confirm your interest by Week 1 of Term 3.
Music Awards Dinner – Friday 26 August
Be sure to pencil this date in your diary. Friends of Music are hosting this joyous night with great food, and entertainment provided by our students in small ensemble arrangements. As well as celebrating the esteemed place that Music holds within our school community, students across our many co-curricular ensembles will be nominated for and presented awards in areas of Service, Leadership, Dedication and Excellence to the Music Program throughout 2022. We can’t wait to share this wonderful evening with you.
