Issue 19 2022 Term 2 Week 9 - 23 Jun 2022

From the Principal

I trust you will have received my letter regarding the development of a new Three Campus Master Plan for the School and our engagement with EPM, one of Australia’s premier construction project management firms. The comprehensive Community Consultation process includes our students, staff, parents and carers and other key stakeholders. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to join various groups of students from the Junior and Secondary Schools in a series of recent workshops, during which they clearly articulated the types of facilities that best support their learning and enable them to thrive, with a view to future development priorities across the School. Students have also had the opportunity to provide feedback via a survey, along with a staff survey and workshop. We look forward to receiving your important input into the process early next term.

I enjoyed the opportunity to speak at the Preparatory, Junior and Secondary School assemblies this week, to thank our teachers and support staff for their dedication, care and commitment to the students. I asked the younger students to reflect on one word that would describe their teachers and through a roving microphone, shared a number of the responses. It was moving to hear so many positive words such as: kind, caring, humorous, compassionate, inspiring, smart, super-awesome and even one fashionista.

My thanks to all students and staff who were involved in creating such a memorable Senior Music Festival last Friday evening. The standard of music was exceptional and it was clear that the students thoroughly enjoyed performing and leading proceedings. Other Music treats today were the Junior Choral Celebration Concert and a very special Junior Campus performance of a Torres Strait Islander song to celebrate NAIDOC week.

We were blessed with a stunning day for the Secondary School Athletics Carnival this week and it was fantastic to see so many students competing, led by our Year 12 cohort, who are looking forward to finishing the term on a high, with their Year 12 Formal on Friday evening.

This term has been full of wonderful events and there is much to be thankful for and to celebrate in the life of the School. I thank all members of the school community for your ongoing support and wish you and your families a relaxing and reinvigorating school holiday period.

Mr Stephen Webber

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the second term of school. A big thank you to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) and all of our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) who continue to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life.

At the heart of Redlands Strategic Plan is a continued commitment to the development of Teaching and Learning spaces, along with sporting and cocurricular facilities for students and staff now and into the future. This commitment will be delivered through the development of a new Three Campus Master Plan (Senior, Junior and High Country Campuses), shaped through a comprehensive Community Consultation process that includes our staff, parents and carers, students and other key stakeholders.

Our Community Consultation commenced this term with feedback provided by our staff and students. In early Term 3, this process continues as we seek the opinions and insight of our parents and carers through a survey and workshop as follows:

  • All parents and carers will be invited to complete an online Master Plan Survey
  • The Workshop will include a broad representation of the Redlands parent and carer community

We are excited about the journey our School will take in the development of a new Master Plan, and we look forward to working with Redlands parents and carers in its development.

It is always a pleasure to hear what our alumni community have been up to and I was especially interested to read of Redlander Rob Sheppard’s (2012) journey through sports administration given my own corporate experience in this area. Rob’s story, along with an update from the Foundation team, can be enjoyed here.

A reminder to Save the Date – the Redlands Spring Fair is back and will take place on Saturday, 3 September. We will share further details on this much loved Redlands community event early next term.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful mid-year break with your family.

“We’ve got Spirit, Yes we do! We’ve got Spirit, How about you?!”

Over the last two weeks we have enjoyed watching students in fun competition at our annual Swimming & Athletics Carnivals. Congratulations to the champion athletes and the winning Houses.

Today students compete at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, however, over the years, Swimming Carnivals have taken place in other venues including the North Sydney Olympic Pool and the Warringah Aquatic Centre. During the 1980s students looked forward to ‘training’ at Balmoral Baths (now the Public Dining Room), and dodged jelly fish and other recreational swimmers before spending pocket money to buy a chocolate bar for the return bus trip to school.

Gergaynia Becket (Redlander 1957) competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics at 15 years of age, and again at the 1960 Summer Olympics. She was trained by her father (not a swimmer himself) in ocean pools around Manly and Middle Harbour.

The Athletics Carnival, which took place on Tuesday at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, was a wonderful reflection of House Spirit. In the 1950s students would travel to Moss Vale for Carnivals, and in the 1970s most novelty events took place at Mosman Oval, of which we have some wonderful footage from Sarah Cowper (Redlander 1972) who recently donated to our archives. It is after Sarah’s great grandfather that Cowper House is named. Mr Cowper was for many years the Honorary Treasurer of the SCEGGS Group.

A Redlander at the FIFA World Cup – Rob Sheppard (2012)

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games     2021 FIFA Club World Cup UAE.

After graduating from Redlands, I moved up to Queensland to study at Bond University and came away 4 years later with 3 degrees (Law, Communication and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice) and a whole heap of sunny memories. After about 1 year of working as a solicitor in Queensland I realised that the legal profession wasn’t the right fit and so decided to chase the dream I have had since I was a child and throughout my time at Redlands: International Sport.

After getting my first taste of the raw emotions of international sporting events at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games working in the local organising committee, I discovered that there was an entire global circuit of sporting event professionals who travel around to the 4 corners of the globe to plan and deliver international sporting events.

From there begun a global adventure that has spanned the last 6 years and me living and/or working in 6 different countries: Australia, Switzerland, Scotland, Italy, Qatar and the UAE. From soaking up the southern Italian sun in Naples to trying to learn Glaswegian in Scotland and enjoying the desert life in the Middle East, whilst creating events that left a mark on millions of people the world over, it truly has been a dream.

After all this fun I decided to put my head down again and head back to studies, completing my Master of Advanced Studies at AISTS in Switzerland (Master in Sport Management – AISTS – International Academy of Sport), the World’s #1 Masters in Sports Management. This involved a lot of work with international sporting bodies, for example with the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, for whom I did some consulting work to help make the world a better place through sport.

The adventure continued after this and I was lucky enough to be offered a position at FIFA, the global governing body for Football (soccer as we call it in Australia) in the central project management department of the Events Division, working on and creating memories for sport and football fans at events such as the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Olympic Games and Futsal and Beach Soccer World Cups. The work involved regular travel (with a pause during the peak of COVID) with very rarely having a month without international travel.

It’s a real treat to be able to help people experience outstanding sporting events and to work in and experience such different cultures as in Costa Rica, India, North America, the Middle East or even right in my backyard in Switzerland, where Swiss German is an adventure in itself to learn!

I am now back in Australia for a few months to work remotely from here, focussing on the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, that will take place from July to August 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, including in Sydney.

Redlands really allowed me to leverage my international background with not only a strong educational path but also a way forward in life outside of work, knowing that you should always chase the memories that you will look back on with fondness and that sometimes taking a risk will pay out tenfold down the line.

Never be afraid to be who you are and create as many positive memories as you can, every day – after all, isn’t that what life is about?

Another term is (almost) over! And it’s been a busy one. The Worn Up collections ended up packed tightly into over 20 boxes with a volume of around 2000L or 2 cubic metres of clothes not going into landfill! Thank you to everyone who donated, sorted and packed.

We hope that you all have a wonderful winter break. Safe travels to all those who are making trips both near and far. When you return, get ready for Pink Sock Gala Day on Sat 23 July and the Spring Fair on Sat 3 September! We will be looking for volunteers to help at both great events.

Pink socks (available for purchase from the Uniform Shop) will be worn at our AFL, Football and Rugby home games at Macquarie Uni where we will be helping run a cake stall and BBQ, with proceeds donated to Breast Cancer Network Australia. There will also be pink socks worn at our Hockey, Netball and Tennis games.

The highly anticipated Spring Fair is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and depth of students’ art-related activities.

Enjoy your holidays and see you in Term 3!

Student Highlights

The Senior Music Festival, held last Friday night at The Concourse, Chatswood, was an extraordinary evening of talent and joy. It may have even been ‘The Greatest of All Time’! A huge congratulations to the students and staff involved – it was an amazing experience for the students and a pleasure to watch.

On Monday morning I spent time with students engaged in Master Planning consultation. Students explored maps of the Senior Campus and the High Country Campus and shared their ideas and feelings about what works well for their learning and wellbeing. The students in Year 7 to 9 led the Project managers from EPM on a tour of their favourite and least favourite sites of the School. It was a positive experience for them and one they embraced with vigour and energy.

2022 Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival was a great day on Tuesday. Thankfully we had sunny weather and students were engaged, participating in a range of track and field events throughout the day. Personally, I enjoyed watching the High Jump (and so did year 7, some of whom are pictured below) and I also enjoyed the Students vs Staff Relay – mostly because the teachers won!

The week doesn’t end there! We also introduced the Student Leadership program to our Year 11 cohort, met with Year 12 about their Formal on Friday night and planned two large assemblies to conclude the term. On Friday Year 10 to 12 will engage in their Term 3 Assembly in the morning and Year 7-9 in the afternoon. At both events students will receive a range of merits and awards for academic, sporting and cocurricular pursuits.

It’s been an extraordinary term. The teachers and support staff have worked tirelessly in support of students and I’d like to acknowledge their sustained care and professionalism. My experience this term tells me that everyone is in need of a break these holidays – I do hope it is restful and restorative.  A Parent Holiday Guide from our Secondary School Counselling Team can be found below for your benefit.

Bonjour from France!

Lucile Thompson (Year 9) has spent this term in France living with a local family and studying at a French school. Her mum, Anne Moal, has been keeping us updated with her adventures and we look forward to hearing about them from her, in person, when she returns in Term 3.

Here is a recent message from Lucile:

Bonjour from France!

I hope that you’re all going well – so the term is nearly finished and I am so happy that I got this opportunity to study in another country. Right now, I am preparing for the Brevet which is a test done by all 3èmes (Yr 9s), it covers Maths, History, French and Science as well as an oral presentation. I’m only going to do the oral presentation because it’s too late for me to do the other parts, but it’s been really interesting to go to a new school and see how the system works there. There are a few differences though – they don’t have uniforms or many computers, apart from some in the library. The school is also much smaller, and when a teacher is absent you can leave school early or come to school later depending on when they are absent. It’s been really interesting to learn something new about a different school system and I can’t believe it’s nearly over. I hope you are all enjoying the end of term and hope you have fantastic holidays!

Lucile

Representative Sport Pockets

This week we distributed certificates recognising students’ ongoing commitment to Representative Sport both for last year’s Winter season and the recent Summer season which concluded last term.

Students for whom this is the first full season participating received a Merit Certificate. Those who have completed two or more years will have received Pocket, Half Colour or Full Colour authorisations depending on the number of years completed. Full Colours require a minimum of 4 years and are only awarded in Year 12.

Awards for non-sporting cocurricular activities are presented at the end of Semester 2, except for Year 12 who have just all received their final set of awards.

Students wishing to have awards embroidered on their blazers should drop the blazer and certificate with the Uniform Shop staff in Liggins Quad either after the final assemblies, at lunch or after school tomorrow. Unfortunately, we can’t send the blazer off without the certificate, nor can we print replacement certificates before the end of term.

All students receiving these awards are congratulated on their commitment to the school community and their peers by letting their light shine, and in living out the school values such as Respect and Responsibility through their actions in our varied sporting arenas.

Year 11 Shine At the Senior Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday, Yr 11 participated in the 2022 Senior Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. It was pleasing to see Yr 11 step outside their comfort zone and compete for their respective House across all the track and field events. The House Spirit was very evident on the day with Yr 11 cheering on all members of their House across the different Year Groups. In regards to the participation on the day, there were record heats for Year 11 in the track events and large numbers of competitors in the field events who signed up to ‘have a go’ at the event. The camaraderie by Yr 11 at the carnival was clearly evident and was a fine example of the cohort becoming even more cohesive as we head towards Yr 12.

Farewell Ms Katie Ebzery

Ms Katie Ebzery will sadly be leaving the Yr 11 Pastoral Team due to a move up to Tamworth with her husband who has just received a placement as a police officer. Ms Ebzery has been such a precious mentor and Tutor to her Dumolo Red Tutor Group and has valued each and every student throughout her time at Redlands. We wish Ms Ebzery the best of luck in her new endeavors.

Below is a farewell message to Ms Ebzery written by Josie Simpson and Riley Parton from 11 Dumolo Red.

“Ms Ebzery took the reigns of leading our Tutor Group at the beginning of this year and though we are sad to see her departure, we wish Ms Ebzery all the best with her future endeavors. I am very thankful that Ms Ebzery was able to form authentic connections with my peers and I am so thankful for her approachable and genuine nature. The absence of Ms Ebzery’s attentive and altruistic character during Tutor Time will be something our Tutor Group will never forget. Anyone who was lucky enough to know Ms Ebzery in her time here at Redlands will miss her dearly.”  (Josie Simpson)

“Ms Ebzery has been a kind Tutor and my Tutor Group has become closer under her leadership. We have really appreciated her presence and willingness to help our Tutor Group with all types of academic and pastoral issues. Our Tutor Group will really miss the fun activities that we did with Ms Ebzery and I would like to wish Ms Ebzery the best of luck with her move to Tamworth!” (Riley Parton)

Senior Music Festival Reflection by Lachlan Scott

“Last Friday evening, the Redlands Music Department put on their biggest annual event; the Senior Music Festival. This year’s theme was The Greatest of All Time (or GOAT for short), where the School’s ensembles and various solo performers displayed what they had been working on throughout the year. The event was held at The Concourse in Chatswood; a professional venue that allows us students to experience firsthand what it’s like to perform to large audiences with the support of lighting technicians, sound engineers, stage managers and of course the dedicated Redlands Music staff.

Yr 11 had a large representation at the festival in Concert Bands (Chirag Kowligi, Jamison Houchell, Lucy Baird, Alana Mansfield, Joe Griffiths, Jack Lazzarotto, Oscar Whatmough, Hadley Wintle, Patrick Walker and myself), Choir (Poppy Justice, Phoebe Barnett, Marcus Ogden, Charlotte Scamps, Issy Treloar, Tobias Bowgerald, Lily Hobbs, Maya Little and Elena Parker), Guitar Ensembles (Tess Miller Maliepaard and Sienna Wessels), Strings (Sahara Ali and Sabrina Blasco) and behind the scenes with Production (Liam Franklin, Angus Ryan, Oliver Noakes, Alex Tully and Jamie Gold).

I’m sure that everyone involved would agree with me in saying that putting together the event was a strenuous task, particularly for the Music staff, but seeing how it all came together in the end was well worth all of the hours that everyone put in. We were able to walk away with the satisfaction of pulling off a great show. But not only that, we also walked away with lifelong memories and stronger friendships. I’ve been involved in the Festival every year since Year 7 and with every new year comes a new and exciting show, but my fondest memories remain off the stage. Cheering on your friends up in the stands, messing around on your instruments in the corridors and playing cards in the common rooms. The atmosphere of the Festival is something that I will never forget and I myself can’t wait for Yr 11’s final festival next year.”

Student Praise

Well done to all the Yr 11 students who assisted at the Redlands Senior School Open Morning. The Yr 11 assistants had the opportunity to meet and greet parents and spend time with new students. Yr 10 Steps Up Participation at the Athletics Carnival

Yesterday, the involvement from Yr 10 was impressive! Few students were in the stands as everyone found their event to participate in at the Athletics Carnival. Congratulations and well-deserved mentions will be included in the first Note Day for Term 3.  Below are some incredible memories from the last two carnivals.

Student Acknowledgements and Congratulations

Congratulations to Jess Van Extel who represented CIS for the State in Newcastle for Hockey!

We wish Kiana Walsh-Buckley all the best as she begins a new adventure at an IB school in Switzerland.  She has been an incredible addition to our cohort for this past year and she will be missed!

Best of luck to Alissandra Braden as she competes at the World Sailing Competition in Portugal next term after placing first at the Metropolitan Championships and winning the RSYS Summer Race series. Good luck to Alissandra! We look forward to updates and sharing her accomplishments when she returns.

We wish Daisy Thomas a fantastic Term 3 as she continues to compete at a high level throughout the winter season and continuing her academic studies through Snowy Mountains Grammar School. We look forward to updates and celebrating her accomplishments throughout Term 3 and welcoming her back in Term 4.  Good luck to Daisy!

Year 9

Farewell – Ms Vanessa Wang

We wish Ms Wang well as she embarks on a wonderful adventure to study overseas for a year. Ms Wang is a wonderful Assistant Year Advisor whose energy, positivity, and gentle approach with our Yr 9 students will be missed. We wish you the greatest success as you study and travel over the course of the next year and look forward to having you back with us in 2023. This is not a farewell, rather best wishes for your exciting adventure ahead.

Senior Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday, Yr 9 participated in the 2022 Senior Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. Participation rates were incredible, and the House spirit was fantastic. The excitement from the cohort as they engaged with several events across the course of the day was wonderful to note, and the comradeship for their peers was endearing.

Congratulations to all students who involved themselves throughout the day.

“The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit”.

It is hard to believe that Yr 8 are halfway through the year! For those families travelling these school holidays, we wish you a safe and happy holiday; and for those families having some “at home time”, we wish you a restful and happy break.

Senior Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday, Yr 8 participated with enthusiasm and grit in the 2022 Senior Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. It was wonderful to witness incredibly high participation in both the track and field events. As the sun shone, the stands were electric with House spirit and Yr 8 wildly cheering as their peers challenged themselves in a range of events. Yr 8 should be very proud of their efforts and how they conducted themselves at the carnival.

The following students are to be congratulated on their outstanding achievements:

U13 Boys: Runner Up – Ashley Corn

U14 Girls: Champion – Amber Kusano

U14 Boys: Champion – Landon Mansell

U14 Boys Runner-Up – Finnegan O’Sullivan

Senior Music Festival

Last Friday evening, the Redlands Music Department staged their biggest annual event; the Senior Music Festival. This year’s theme was ‘The Greatest Of All Time’ (GOAT), where the School’s outstanding variety of Music ensembles and various solo performers showcased what they have been working on over the year. The event was held at The Concourse in Chatswood, a professional venue that allows students to experience firsthand what it’s like to perform to large audiences with the support of lighting technicians, sound engineers, stage managers and the dedicated Redlands Music staff. Congratulations to the exceptionally talented Yr 8 students who shone on the stage while playing a variety of musical instruments in a range of ensembles.

A marvellous achievement by Sahara and Isabella.

Senior Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday, Yr 7 participated in the 2022 Senior Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. It was pleasing to see so many Yr 7 students step up and compete at their first Senior Athletics Carnival. Participation was incredibly high and not just on the track but in the field events too. As the sun shone, the stands were electric with House spirit. Yr 7 not only dressed the part but also cheered on their House peers throughout the day. Yr 7 should be very proud of their efforts and how they conducted themselves at the carnival.

Da Vinci Decathlon

During our Year Assembly this week, we recognised the Yr 7 Da Vinci Team: Abby Stante, Sam Ashby, Charlie Reeves, Elodie Melvin, Liliana Halfen, Sophia Liu and Samuel Turton. These students were awarded da Vinci certificates for 3rd place in the Cartography section. A wonderful achievement. Thank you to our Tutors Ms Elizabeth Keogh and Ms Rachel Wilson for the support of our Yr 7 students throughout the competition.

Farewell to Ms Sandra Reidenbach

Yesterday, during our Yr 7 Assembly we farewelled 7 Dumolo Red’s Tutor Ms Sandra Reidenbach. Melissa Franco and Maritsa Radich spoke on behalf the Year Group, thanking Ms Reidenbach for her support and care over the course of the semester. Amelie Beeton and Charli Amm made a card which had been signed by the students of 7DR. It was heartening to see the students recognise Ms Reidenbach’s contribution and hear in their own words the impact she has had and how she helped to facilitate their transition into Secondary School. We wish Ms Reidenbach every success in her new endeavours.

End of Term

It has been another term of highlights and achievements and I extend my gratitude and appreciation to students, staff and families for the various roles we play in our School community. Both individually and collectively, the students continue to grow and in our final assembly at the start of the week, it was wonderful to reflect upon another purposeful and enjoyable term of learning and successes. Our Principal, Mr Webber, spoke to the students and recognised the staff for their sterling efforts over the semester and it was heartwarming to hear students share one word that best described their teacher as he walked around the hall with a roving microphone.

As we approach the mid-year break, I hope that families are able to take time for rest, relaxation and renewal. As is also the case for our staff, these times away from Redlands are very important for all of us as they then allow us to be at our very best when we are here. Rest, in whatever sense, is different for all of us which and I hope that the mid-year break allows you to relax and recharge. We also say goodbye to a few students and families and wish them all the very best and much happiness in the next chapter of their schooling.

As travel has opened up considerably, I know that many in our community will also be reconnecting with loved ones after an extended period of time so to those of you travelling near or far, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 19 July. Please note that the Junior School Office will reopen on Monday 18 July and I will send a detailed Term 3 letter towards the end of the holiday break.

Buddy Picnic Event

Gallery Walks

On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome Yr 3 families into classrooms as the students were able to showcase their learning with parents and celebrate a wonderful semester of learning. With every classroom brimming full of parents, the students were visibly enthralled to be able to share their thinking and learning experiences with both peers and adults. My thanks are extended to the Yr 3 teachers and students for their efforts to organise this opportunity.

Equally, we look forward to welcoming our Yr 5 parents in tomorrow morning and then Yrs 4 & 6 parents at the end of Term 3 (see Term 3 dates later in this section).

Staffing News

Currently on Long Service Leave, Literacy support teacher, Mrs Cheeseman will be leaving Redlands after 14 years of dedicated service to so many students in our learning support program and we have truly valued her expertise with countless students over this time. Mrs Cheeseman has been offered a wonderful opportunity with a new company to support students with learning difficulties across the wider Sydney area and further into regional and rural NSW and I know this new challenge is something that she is excited about. As has been the case this term, Mrs Melinda Griffin and our Learning Plus coordinator, Mrs Kate McAliece, will continue to teach the students that Mrs Cheeseman has been working with for the remainder of the year.

Due to his partner’s relocation to Darwin, we say goodbye to Mr Batten after a relatively short time at Redlands teaching in Yr 4 but wish him well on this unexpected adventure. Equally, we are delighted to welcome Ms Alison Taylor who joins us from Neutral Bay Public School, where she has led the Opportunity Class for many years.

We thank Ms Sawyer who has taught Yr 3 this semester whilst Mr Latimer has been on Long Service Leave and Ms Sawyer will be around from time to time as a casual teacher next semester. Mr Latimer will also resume his Yr 3 Coordinator responsibility and I thank Mrs McPhillips for stepping in so capably and assuredly in his absence.

We also wish Mrs Benneyworth well on her Long Service Leave next term and simultaneously welcome Ms Kennedy Proctor to teach her class in Yr 4.

Semester One Reports

Junior School student reports will be available to parents via Redlands Pulse next week. A notification will be sent to you when they have been uploaded for you to access. Back copies of your child’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse.

To access the reports, parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through the report with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will spend time with your child looking at aspects of goal setting for the second semester, which they will share at the Student-led Conferences in Week 5 (15-19 august).

Junior Campus Master Plan – Student Voice

Over the past week, Junior School students were given an opportunity to share their ideas and perspectives on the exciting possibilities of a future Junior Campus. From an optional activity, we were able to share the thoughts of 188 students with the project team at EPM who then facilitated an in-person workshop with a cross-section of students from each year group. Both Mr Webber and I attended this session too and along with EPM, we were highly impressed with the level of thinking and rich discussion amongst the group.

Save the Date – Junior Music Festival: Thursday 4 August 4.30pm – 6pm

All Junior School students in Yrs 3-6 are busily preparing for the return of our annual Junior Music Festival to be held in Week 3 of next term. With hits from Queen, A-ha and a range of other famous rock artists, it promises to be a spectacular show.

Please note that the event will be staged in Dunnet Hall and every student will be involved in this show. On the day itself, students will remain at school from 3.20pm until the end of the concert at around 6pm. Detailed information including ticket sales will be distributed at the very start of next term.

Head of Preparatory School

As we wind down another great term in Prep, I wish everyone a lovely holiday break. I have been talking to many of our parents and students about plans made for the next few weeks, and it has been great to hear so many of you taking some time out to relax, catch up with family around the world and at home, attend the fabulous Vacation Care activities or to just enjoy a change of routine at home.

I encourage everyone to find a snippet of time to talk to your child and to reflect on this term. This term has been a unique one as we were able to return to a normal routine, have parents back on campus and resume and begin new teaching and learning experiences.

We were able to hold parent workshops, open classrooms, Mother’s Day activities and best of all, remove our masks if we felt comfortable to and see each other’s faces again – a connection that we had missed.

I am incredibly proud of the way our Prep students have re-engaged with face to face schooling this term. Their enthusiasm and resilience were admirable, so was their ability to reform and build connections and friendships again after being via zoom for so long.

Having our parents back on campus has made Prep complete. How wonderful it is to have families, grandparents and friends walk through the reception, say hello to staff and then to be able to sit together in the afternoons and catch up.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Jen Mast and the PCG group who have met fortnightly with myself and other staff members to discuss upcoming events and share ideas for out of school get togethers. This network is vitally important in keeping our prep community strong and supportive.

As we look towards next term, please take note of some key events that are in the planning stages for next term.

Week 10 Prep Games Day – parent picnic and lunchtime finish

What a Thursday!

Today we enjoyed a range of activities that celebrated our love of music, our K-6 peer buddy system and upcoming NAIDOC Week.

The K-6 Choral Celebration was a beautiful way to celebrate all things singing across the Junior Campus. TG to Year 6 students also gathered at lunchtime to share a special Torres Strait Island song that they have been learning and sang it together as a whole Junior Campus in celebration of NAIDOC week. It truly was a heart-warming sight and sound experience for us all.

That wasn’t the end of the day, after singing, our K-6 buddy classes shared lunch together and enjoyed each other’s company. Again, a wonderful return to peer support throughout the School and sharing the love of being at school.

A wonderful day and a big thank you to Mrs Clinton and Ms Moses for pulling the day together.

Farewell to Miss Heard

This week we will wish Miss Heard well, as she leaves to have her first baby. What a wonderful mother she will make. We know she will touch base with us as soon as the baby arrives. Mrs Deb Thomas will take over teaching Blue Class Seniors from Term 2, and Mrs Gilroy will teach Blue Class Juniors. Although I know many families and students will be sad to see Miss Heard go, I know many of you will be excited to hear of her replacements. Mrs Thomas and Mrs Gilroy are looking forward to getting to know the children and families better.

Welcome to Miss Caddick

We are very please and excited to welcome Janet Caddick to the Redlands House team. She brings a vast array of experience and expertise in early childhood education from her previous roles in various countries around the world. Football

Congratulations to all our Football players on a successful term of Redlands Football. It was fantastic to see all teams in action for Round 7 with some great results in both the Girls and Boys Football programs. The game of the week for Boys Football was the 13A Boys against St Andrew’s 13A, Redlands started the game down 4-1 but after a valiant effort in the second half finished with a 5-4 win in their first victory of the season! The Girls game of the week was the 2nd Girls Football team vs St Paul’s 1st Girls. Playing against a 1st team they were coming up against some very experienced players but managed to pull off a 2-1 win in a fantastic team effort!

There are three rounds remaining before the end of the regular season, with the top 4 teams in each division making it through to the semi-finals. If you would like to see where your team is currently sitting on the ladder you can check on the ISA website.

We will be offering some Football sessions over the holiday period, please click here to register for these sessions, open to all boys/girls players in the football program. The details can be found below:

Hockey

Congratulations to our Hockey teams on a fantastic Term 2! The 1st Girls team had a cracking start against Oxley in Round 7, dominating possession and managing to convert on two early chances. Unfortunately they were unable to hold out Oxley for the second half but showed some great signs early in the game with the final score not reflecting how close the two teams really are. The 2nd Girls had a huge win over Oxley the last time these two teams met. Unable to convert on a number of early chances and some strong goalkeeper work by Oxley saw Redlands gaining a 1-0 lead but unable to find the back of the goal. Some great efforts on the defensive end saw Redlands able to hold out Oxley for the duration of the game and add another win to their tally. Our 1st Girls are currently sitting in 4th position on the ladder and the 2nd Girls are in 2nd spot. With 3 rounds before semi-finals commence, we are hoping both teams can maintain a position in the top 4 to secure a place in the semi-finals. Wishing all Hockey students a fantastic day and we look forward to seeing you back in Term 3 to finish off the season.

There will be one Hockey training session and one gym session on offer for our Hockey players in the final week of the holidays:

Tuesday 12th July:          10:30am-12pm, Skills Session @ Junior School Oval

Thursday 14th July:        9am-10am, Gym Session @ Fitness Centre

Please click here to register for one/both of the sessions listed above.

Training will recommence in Term 3 on Tuesday 19 July. The annual Pink Sock Round will be held during the first week back in Term 3 (Saturday 23 July). Pink socks are now available for purchase via FlexiSchools or directly from the Uniform Shop.

The End of Season Hockey Celebration evening will be held on Thursday 25 August. We can’t wait to celebrate with all of our Hockey players and parents so please be sure to mark the date in your calendar! Further information and ticket sales will be available closer to the date.

Rugby

Blue Mountains vs Redlands

Our Under 16s returned to form this weekend, combining brilliantly in the second half to put away a spirited Blue Mountain side. Coming out in the first half, the Redlands squad immediately knew they were in the match, the Blue Mountains side launching out in defence and really taking it to our players. Against the run of play, Hugo Scott was able to scoop up a loose pass and run the length of the field, avoiding the chasing defence for a wonderful try in the corner. Redlands let the opposition straight back into the match, slipping off a number of tackles to let Blue Mountains score. With the try converted, Blue Mountains went into the half time break leading 7-5.

It was fantastic to see our the leaders in the group challenging the team to lift their defensive efforts and control the ball in attack more effectively, setting out clear targets for the second half. As the team ran out to start the second half, you could already feel the shift in intensity within the group. From the opening kick-off Redlands was in control. A devastating hit by Kane Thompson popped the ball loose and he quickly was able to regather, step a defender and score under the posts. A mere moment later, James Greer sliced through some lazy defence and ran the length of the field, leaving a trail of BMGS players in his wake. It did not stop there. Hugo Scott quickly was in for his second, Max Stepniak ran in two quick tries and Alfie Leach, one of the most vocal at halftime, got on the scoreboard as well. In just eight minutes, this incredible team ran in five tries, leaving the opposition crushed. Amazingly, they were not done yet, with Max getting his third, Hugo Scott also notching a hat trick and William De Saxe also getting another. In the end, the Redlands Under 16s went from a 7-5 deficit to a 11 try to 1 demolition job.

Elsewhere, our Under 15s, ably supported by a number of our stronger Under 14s, played a Barbarians side from St Pius X. The St Pius side had a number of the As players and, as to be expected from a Division One school, were very organised in both attack and defence. It was fantastic to see the way in which players lifted within the Redlands squad, with Max Perry and Hunter Wilson being two particular standouts, their efforts in defence amazing considering the level of attack. Zach Lark was back to his destructive best which was fantastic to see. Working off Harry Ashby in the backline, Zach was able to punch holes in the defence of St Pius and look for offloads. This Under 15s squad, although affected by injuries to a number of their key players, have been one of our hardest working squads and will, with continued development, see some fantastic results later in the season.

Special thanks must go to Alfie Leach, our Under 16s Captain, who stepped up to referee the Under 15s match. At the start of 2022, Alfie became a fully-fledged and registered referee with NSW and I could not be prouder to see one of our students take this pathway. The feedback from parents, students and the opposition coaches was so overwhelmingly positive describing Alfie as a mature and controlled ref. Again, a massive thank you to Alfie.

  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Time: 6:30pm

Location: tbc

More information on the venue, students involved in the performance and tickets will be announced soon.

Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy Annual End of Year Performance

All students of the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, Kindergarten – Year 12, are invited to take part in our End of Year Performance which will be presented to family and friends at The Concourse, Chatswood on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 November.

On 17 November you will get the chance to see two world premieres. The first piece is Pictures at an Exhibition curated by Gilly Revie and choreographed by Academy Teachers for Kindergarten-Year 6. This piece will bring Redlands Dance and Visual Art together through the collaboration of the Junior Visual Arts cocurricular syllabus. Then our Seniors will present Twelve Days of Christmas which has also been curated by Gilly Revie with a mixture of works choreographed by Academy Teachers and repertoire based on dances from famous ballets such as La Fille Mal Gardee, Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

On the 18  November the evening begins with a Grand Défilé (literally translated as Big Parade) arranged and choreographed by Kim Traynor and presenting all senior ballet dancers. Act 2 takes you on a Journey of Dance from Folk dancing to the Charleston, from Disco to Hip Hop and will include works by IB and HSC Curriculum dancers. The evening closes with Twelve Days of Christmas.

So, a lot of hard work and preparation is required from everyone during Term 3 to ensure a wonderful experience for all. Students will be given further information over the next few weeks regarding storylines and casting, and we would like you to put the following dates in the diary for our extra rehearsals during Semester 2.

Extra-subject Drama and Theatre

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

A few reminders below:

The Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Program automatically renews at the end of Semester 1. Parents do not need to contact the drama office unless they wish to change their enrolment. Billing takes place prior to the commencement of Semester 2. Four weeks’ written notice to drama@redlands.nsw.du.au is required if you wish to withdraw from the program.

Please communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. We have had cases where students are in the car line or their designated pick-up spot and have needed to be located before class starts. Please ensure any absences are sent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu or your child’s class tutor prior to the lesson.

Music

Senior Music Festival Wrapped!

We are so delighted to say that Senior Music Festival (SMF2022) was the joy-bringing event we hoped it would be! From the rousing Beethoven’s 9th massed opening to the 1990’s hip-hop Joyful Joyful at the finale, 180 students roared onto the stage in full life and colour – showing such commitment to their craft and to their collective vision. The audience-turned-choir for YMCA and Piano Man were in splendid voice also!

Yr 12 shone in their final SMF and the Music Captains’ reflections in our post-show celebration yesterday were insightful. Amidst her thanks to tutors and staff, our Captain of Bands, Eden Borrie made a comment that the Music program had been a place where she had ‘grown in confidence and self belief’, and found kindred friends with whom to share her schooling journey over the past six years. This is at the core of why we offer such rich and diverse collaborative music-making opportunities at Redlands – so that every student can find a place to belong and grow as young people.

We are so very proud of our students for their extraordinary work in this year’s Senior Music Festival, and we’re already dreaming for 2023!  #EvenGOATer

Year 8 Elective Music | SSO Excursion

In support of our Year 8 explorations of Baroque and Classical periods, both Year 8 elective Music classes enjoyed an excursion to City Recital Hall on Wednesday evening to hear the Sydney Symphony Orchestra offer their concert on the same theme Inspired by Bach. A highlight was the direct address to Redlands students from the concertmaster in his emceeing, making the connection that the Mendelssohn works being performed were written when he was 12 as part of his study of ‘the masters’ – his ‘homework’ if you will! Poignant to our Year 8s who have been exploring fugue-writing this week also.

The return bus buzzed with students making connections to their learning, excited to have shared this remarkable experience altogether.

Junior Campus Music Cocurricular Photos

All students in Years 1-6 who are in a cocurricular ensemble will have their group photos taken in Week 1 of next term on Thursday 21st July. Please ensure students are wearing their full school uniform for the photo.

Junior Music Festival

Hits from Brahms to Queen and everything in between have been filling the corridors this term as students busily prepare for this exciting event! We encourage students to maintain their practice over the break so ensembles return to school refreshed and ready to perform in Week 3. Further details will be distributed next term.

Choral Celebration

“In times of hardship and challenge, we can always look to music to bring people together and make the world a better place…”

offered one of our young singers as they introduced their curriculum choral item for our annual internal Choral Celebration.  Students from Transition Gold to Year 6 performed beautifully in the Choral Celebration concert today, with impressive performances from our curriculum choral program and cocurricular choirs. A highlight was a special combined performance of ‘Sesere Eeye’, a Torres Strait Island song we learnt in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Keep an eye out on Seesaw and Google Classroom for recordings of the performances!

Especial thanks are owed to our wonderful Junior Campus teaching team who have created such a joy-filled culture of singing within our curriculum learning, and to both Katherine Moses (Head of Junior Music) and Nicole Roberts (Head of Choral) for their additional and exemplary leadership to this end.

Senior Instrumental Competition 2022

The Redlands Senior Instrumental Competition for 2022 will be the next offering in our Competition series, and is to be held on Monday 19 September. The Music Department Auditions Page will be opened for audition video uploads in the first week of next term, to be submitted by 29 July, 5pm

Music at Winter School

Last year we trialled the offer of occasional ‘Zoom’-based Private Instrumental or Vocal Tuition sessions for Winter School attendees, in order to provide some continuity of learning for their instrumental learning, and we are pleased to offer the same in 2022. Though there are many timetabling logistics to navigate and lessons are not able to be guaranteed, if your child is attending Winter School and you would like us to investigate the possibility of occasional Instrumental or Vocal lessons with your tutor, please use this sign-up form to confirm your interest by Week 1 of Term 3.

Music Awards Dinner – Friday 26 August

Be sure to pencil this date in your diary. Friends of Music are hosting this joyous night with great food, and entertainment provided by our students in small ensemble arrangements. As well as celebrating the esteemed place that Music holds within our school community, students across our many co-curricular ensembles will be nominated for and presented awards in areas of Service, Leadership, Dedication and Excellence to the Music Program throughout 2022. We can’t wait to share this wonderful evening with you.

Have a lovely break!

The Music Department wishes you a safe and refreshing break, and we look forward to welcoming you back for a wonderful Semester 2 of music-making. Don’t forget to take your instruments home for the holidays! See you next term!
