Year 11

Yr 11 Careers Expo reflection

Last Thursday, Yr 11 participated in the Careers Expo at the Hordern Pavillion, Moore Park. It was pleasing to see so many of our Yr 11 students engaged in conversation with Universities, TAFE, Colleges and other organisations about their future studies. Many of our Yr 11 students came away feeling inspired, motivated, and for some, a much clearer vision of what their future career and education pathway looks like. Thank you to the Career Advisers, Ms Justine Fowler and Ms Claire Hurst for their organisation of the Careers Expo and to Ms Cressida Rigney for her assistance with administration in the lead up to the event.  Below are some thoughtful student reflections on the Careers Expo:

“The careers expo was a fantastic opportunity for us Yr 11 students to gain an idea of where we would like to go after school. It assisted me with deciding regarding study post-school life through the variety of displays and all the people who were willing to listen to our interests and give recommendations! I really enjoyed gaining an insight of where my friends were interested in and seeing all the opportunities that the different post-school options provide! Specific universities that caught my eye included the University of Tasmania because of the opportunities they provide for extracurricular sports including field hockey.” (Freya Gait)

“The recent Yr 11 Careers Expo was an exciting opportunity to learn more about the universities and courses available to me after I complete high school. The expo highlighted some potential career options that I hadn’t contemplated before and prompted me to think about that in terms of what courses would be required in the universities that I am considering. While the University of Sydney and UNSW were highlights for me, I enjoyed getting an overview of many different courses and universities. I was struck by the broad range of options available to us, and that each university had something slightly different to offer. I especially enjoyed the independence and free rein that we were given to talk to different universities of our choice and ask them questions specific to our individual situations.”
(Nicole Steffan)

“The Careers Expo was a great experience for me. It gave me a much greater understanding of the options I have when it comes to choosing both a career and university. As a student who not only recently joined Redlands, but also recently moved to Australia, the careers expo really helped me better understand not only the wide range of universities in this country, but also what they specialise in. It introduced me to professions and majors that I had never considered, or even never heard of. For example, Computer Science has always been an option for me when it came to choosing a career/major, but I have never considered Video Game design as another option for me before the Careers Expo. The Careers Expo was also a great way for me to meet new people in my year, and learn more about the dreams and aspirations of the people I already knew. In general, the Careers Expo was a great experience, allowing me to learn more about the universities and careers in Australia, but also allowing me to learn more about my peers.”
(Chirag Kowgli)

“The Careers Expo was an interesting and educational day, which was very helpful for our Year Group in understanding our options for after school. It showed us how varied our options really are, with 101 different stalls for different universities, as well as several seminars that we had the option to listen to. I am personally very interested in marine biology, and I really enjoyed talking to different schools about my options for courses, and especially University of Tasmania, James Cook University and the University of Newcastle, all of which have amazing marine biology courses. I really enjoyed seeing how wide my options are, and getting to see how other students are interested in the same areas as I am. It was a really great and very helpful experience, that I think will really help a lot of students to make decisions regarding our life after Redlands.”

Week 7 Year Assembly

Well done to the Yr 11 students who demonstrated their communication and leadership skills at the Week 7 Year Assembly. Below are the students who presented, along with their topics of choice:

  • Phoebe Barnett – Upcoming Arts Events
  • Lilly Hobbs and Hugo McKay – Peer Support
  • Daisy Oliver and Lucy Horton – Mocktrial Update
  • Oscar Whatmough and Matt Fry – Chess Club Update
  • Marina Viese Vivaldi – Climate Change/Humanitarian Crisis in India and Pakistan
  • Bronte Backhouse and  Sam Chubb – ISA XC Reflection

The Year Assemblies are the perfect opportunity for any student to practice their public speaking and presenting skills, particularly in the lead-up to the leadership process which will occur at the beginning of Term 3. There will be another Year Assembly coming up in Week 9 in the last week of school. I would like to encourage any Yr 11 student who is considering a leadership position to talk to Yr 11 about a topic of their choice whether that be to do with cocurricular activities, sports results, arts events or a humanitarian/service-learning initiative.
