Issue 17 2022 Term 2 Week 7 - 09 Jun 2022

From The Principal

It has been wonderful to gather together for more regular assemblies this term. Highlights this week have been the musical performances shared by students, with a number of students playing high quality instrumental pieces prior to and at the conclusion of the Junior School assembly. At the Secondary School assembly, the Year 7 Rock Band had everyone clapping along to a Nirvana classic and the rapturous applause at the end said it all. It is always inspiring to see students take a risk and demonstrate courage when performing in front of their peers. I imagine that the band will long remember the rousing ovation.

The musical feast continues with the Vocal Competition this Friday evening, with the students being honoured to have Aria Award winning artist Meg Mac as the guest adjudicator. We are also looking forward to the Senior Music Festival the following Friday 17 June to be held at The Concourse in Chatswood. I was amazed at the standard of the performances last year and encourage you to attend if you can make it. Tickets are available HERE.

Another highlight this week was the Secondary School Swimming Carnival held at SOPAC, with the Junior School Swimming Carnival scheduled for next Wednesday. Our competitive swimmers have been patient in waiting for their opportunity to shine in the pool and with the focus on participation, it has been great to note student leaders strongly encouraging all students to get involved. The opportunity to swim at an Olympic standard venue is something to value.

Each year, Heritage Week provides the School with a wonderful occasion to celebrate our rich history and inspiring stories from our past. This week we pause to reflect and give thanks for 138 years of educating young people in NSW and for all who have given their service to Redlands, which has enabled the School to grow through times of adversity and to flourish into such a dynamic and vibrant school community. Happy 138th Birthday Redlands!

Redlands Spirit

This week has seen a huge surge of spirit across the Secondary School – from Assembly, to Cross Country to the Swimming Carnival, there have been a plentiful array of experiences from which to demonstrate Redlands spirit.

Spirit Assembly

Our extracurricular Rock Band program across both Junior and Senior campuses fosters the talents of our many aspiring performers in over 15 Rock Bands (and counting!). We are often looking for new ways to showcase the talents of all our musicians, and so for our Year 7-9 Spirit Assembly this week, Year 7 musicians performed ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. When the weather warms up, we’re looking forward to hosting more outdoor events for our Rock Bands to perform during lunch time, and hopefully even later this year at the Community Day. Sahara, Lucas, Charlie and James were outstanding and drew some very loud applause and sincere appreciation from students and teachers alike (our Principal and Deputy Principal were bopping along at the back of the gym).

Swimming Carnival Spirit

The Swimming Carnival was a wonderful success today – students demonstrated collective and competitive spirit in and out of the pool. Some records were set early on in the day! Congratulations to the following students who set records on the day:

Girls’ Junior 4x50m Freestyle Relay (Cowper) – Alice Franceschi, Charlotte Humphreys, Olivia Price-Pontifex and Annalyse Rowe

Girls’ Senior 4x50m Freestyle Relay (McDouall)

Erik Scott 18+ 50m Freestyle

Erik Scott 18+ 100m Freestyle

Erik Scott 18+ 50m Backstroke

Loch Wilding 17+ 50m Butterfly

Xander Halfen 15yr 50m Freestyle

Xander Halfen 15yr 50m Backstroke

Students had a great day, waving flags, cheering for their House and congratulating their friends who swam their hardest in the swimming races. In the middle of the day a House Cheer-Off saw Dumolo secure strongest House Spirit, closely followed by Roseby. A huge congratulations and thank you to Heads of House and Year 12 House Captains for their stellar leadership of this community event.

Our Year 12 students enjoyed their annual Novelty Race!

House Spirit

Our Houses showcased their new flags and signs at this year’s Swimming Carnival. Students showed great spirit by wearing the colours of their House this year, which created a special and celebratory atmosphere.

Community Spirit

Our students versus staff relay was exciting – the staff did a fantastic job of keeping up with the teenagers, who did their best to even out the playing field. Hats off to Year 12 student Finn Brooks who waited on the podium so he could commence the race at the same time as Mr Williams. Whilst the students won the relay fair and square, the teachers showed great resilience in the water.

The Redlands Rhino has been very busy of late. He spent the Year 7-9 Spirit Assembly dancing to Smells Like Teen Spirit and was busy cheering on competitors at the Swimming Carnival, and generally lifting the spirits of all!

CIS Cross-Country Carnival which was held on Wednesday at the Sydney Motor Sport Park. Conditions were perfect for the Cross-Country and the course was fast because it was held on the actual race course this year. Finn Gurney (Year 7) qualified for the NSW All Schools to be held early next term. Amber Kusano and Isaac Brooks also had strong races to finish in 14th place.

The following students are to be congratulated for their success:

Finn Gurney – 12 Years boys – 9th place – km (Qualified for NSW All Schools XC)

Nicholas Meagher – 12 Years boys 3km – 37th place

Amber Kusano – 14 years girls 4km – 14th place

Landon Mansell – 14 years boys 4km – 38th place

Daniel Koppers – 15 years boys 4km – 31st place

Isaac Brooks – 16 years boys 6km – 14th place

Gianmarco Pradel – `16 years boys 6km – 36th place

Bronte Backhouse – 17 years girls – 4km – 35th place

Maddie D’Almeida – 17 years girls – 4km – 38th place

Community Update

It was lovely to experience the coming together of staff, students, staff, alumni, our Board and special guests in celebration of Heritage Week. As a community, we value the relationships we have with each other. Our students past and present, families, staff and members of local and global communities are valued and included through a shared connection with Redlands. Foundation Day, to be celebrated tomorrow, provides us with the unique opportunity to share and connect our past with the present and future of the School.

Our Liggins Building, a precious part of Redlands’ heritage, is the only remaining element of our school grounds that links almost 100 years of Redlanders. Originally known as Liggins House, the building was opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today. In preparation for the Liggins Building celebrating its centenary year in 2023, we are embarking on a significant restoration to help preserve its historic façade and refurbish the interior to provide an exceptional learning environment for our students and staff. For more information on how you can support this treasured building please visit our Foundation section.

As you know, we have been working on improving our parent, student and staff digital user experience, in particular our communication channels with families. We are excited to announce that in Term 3 we will be launching both a new website and a significantly enhanced Pulse and App that is more personalised. As we transition to these new platforms we will of course keep you informed of the enhancements made and provide you with support and guidance throughout. Thank you for your feedback within this important and exciting process and we encourage and welcome your continued advice as our digital enhancements are implemented.

At Redlands, we have a standing commitment to sustainably managing our resources whilst continually engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour. Last week we launched our Worn Up initiative that diverts old school uniforms from landfills and upcycles them into new products like school desks and acoustic tiles. For more information on this terrific initiative, as well as an update on other Redlands community activities and events please visit the RPFA section.

Save the date – we are delighted to announce that the Spring Fair is back and will take place on Saturday 3 September. We will share further details on this much loved Redlands community event early next term.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Foundation

Last week I attended a conference focusing on the Advancement side of schools and was very proud of our achievements here at Redlands. Our community has a strong and generous tradition of service and giving. Together we have made a difference which benefits current students and future generations.

Another opportunity is to support the restoration of a precious part of Redlands’ heritage, the Liggins Building, the only remaining element of our school grounds linking almost 100 years (next year!) of Redlanders.

Protecting our precious heritage: Liggins Restoration Appeal

The Liggins Building, originally known as Liggins House, opened on 9 May 1923 in honour of Redlands’ co-founder Elizabeth Liggins. First a boarding house, then kitchen, art room, laboratory, pottery workshop and during WWII, it even housed the School’s bomb shelter. Today, it comprises much loved Language classrooms and the Staff Common Room. Throughout its history, our community has generously supported some of its upgrades, including the 2007 Science Block/Liggins Atrium Project enjoyed by students today.

The proposed restoration will help preserve its historic façade, restore the roof and brickwork, refurbish the interior and provide an exceptional learning environment for our students.

Your support of the Liggins Restoration Appeal will help revive this treasured icon for generations of Redlanders to enjoy.

If you wish to secure a recognition plaque for your donation they are available in three sizes ($1,000, $5,000 or $10,000). Please contact me directly.

Worn Up Uniform Recycling – Deadline Extended

As part of our sustainability efforts, Redlands has partnered with Worn Up with the aim of diverting old school uniforms from landfill to be upcycled into new products. The RPFA will be collecting old Redlands branded uniforms that are not suitable for the second hand uniform until next Tuesday 14 June, with collection bins located in the Prep, Junior and Secondary School Receptions. Please do not send in current uniforms in good condition, which can be donated in Term 3, or non-Redlands branded items, as the RPFA has limited storage space and volunteers to sort through the items. Speaking of which, do let us know if you’re around to help sort and pack!

Yr 11 Careers Expo reflection

Last Thursday, Yr 11 participated in the Careers Expo at the Hordern Pavillion, Moore Park. It was pleasing to see so many of our Yr 11 students engaged in conversation with Universities, TAFE, Colleges and other organisations about their future studies. Many of our Yr 11 students came away feeling inspired, motivated, and for some, a much clearer vision of what their future career and education pathway looks like. Thank you to the Career Advisers, Ms Justine Fowler and Ms Claire Hurst for their organisation of the Careers Expo and to Ms Cressida Rigney for her assistance with administration in the lead up to the event.  Below are some thoughtful student reflections on the Careers Expo:

“The careers expo was a fantastic opportunity for us Yr 11 students to gain an idea of where we would like to go after school. It assisted me with deciding regarding study post-school life through the variety of displays and all the people who were willing to listen to our interests and give recommendations! I really enjoyed gaining an insight of where my friends were interested in and seeing all the opportunities that the different post-school options provide! Specific universities that caught my eye included the University of Tasmania because of the opportunities they provide for extracurricular sports including field hockey.” (Freya Gait)

“The recent Yr 11 Careers Expo was an exciting opportunity to learn more about the universities and courses available to me after I complete high school. The expo highlighted some potential career options that I hadn’t contemplated before and prompted me to think about that in terms of what courses would be required in the universities that I am considering. While the University of Sydney and UNSW were highlights for me, I enjoyed getting an overview of many different courses and universities. I was struck by the broad range of options available to us, and that each university had something slightly different to offer. I especially enjoyed the independence and free rein that we were given to talk to different universities of our choice and ask them questions specific to our individual situations.”
(Nicole Steffan)

“The Careers Expo was a great experience for me. It gave me a much greater understanding of the options I have when it comes to choosing both a career and university. As a student who not only recently joined Redlands, but also recently moved to Australia, the careers expo really helped me better understand not only the wide range of universities in this country, but also what they specialise in. It introduced me to professions and majors that I had never considered, or even never heard of. For example, Computer Science has always been an option for me when it came to choosing a career/major, but I have never considered Video Game design as another option for me before the Careers Expo. The Careers Expo was also a great way for me to meet new people in my year, and learn more about the dreams and aspirations of the people I already knew. In general, the Careers Expo was a great experience, allowing me to learn more about the universities and careers in Australia, but also allowing me to learn more about my peers.”
(Chirag Kowgli)

“The Careers Expo was an interesting and educational day, which was very helpful for our Year Group in understanding our options for after school. It showed us how varied our options really are, with 101 different stalls for different universities, as well as several seminars that we had the option to listen to. I am personally very interested in marine biology, and I really enjoyed talking to different schools about my options for courses, and especially University of Tasmania, James Cook University and the University of Newcastle, all of which have amazing marine biology courses. I really enjoyed seeing how wide my options are, and getting to see how other students are interested in the same areas as I am. It was a really great and very helpful experience, that I think will really help a lot of students to make decisions regarding our life after Redlands.”
(Lilly Hobbs)

Week 7 Year Assembly

Well done to the Yr 11 students who demonstrated their communication and leadership skills at the Week 7 Year Assembly. Below are the students who presented, along with their topics of choice:

  • Phoebe Barnett – Upcoming Arts Events
  • Lilly Hobbs and Hugo McKay – Peer Support
  • Daisy Oliver and Lucy Horton – Mocktrial Update
  • Oscar Whatmough and Matt Fry – Chess Club Update
  • Marina Viese Vivaldi – Climate Change/Humanitarian Crisis in India and Pakistan
  • Bronte Backhouse and  Sam Chubb – ISA XC Reflection

The Year Assemblies are the perfect opportunity for any student to practice their public speaking and presenting skills, particularly in the lead-up to the leadership process which will occur at the beginning of Term 3. There will be another Year Assembly coming up in Week 9 in the last week of school. I would like to encourage any Yr 11 student who is considering a leadership position to talk to Yr 11 about a topic of their choice whether that be to do with cocurricular activities, sports results, arts events or a humanitarian/service-learning initiative.

Student News – Yumeto Lee

Yumeto’s Team, the Ryde Hawks, participated in the Australian Junior Baseball League Championships held in Glenelg, South Australia, between 30 May-3 June. The team started strong with a win in the first game, but unfortunately suffered two heartbreaking walk off losses late in the final games which cost them the chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

A huge congratulations to Yumeto for his extraordinary achievements in Baseball.

YLead Altitude Day

A group of our Yr 9 students had the chance to explore their leadership potential in a fun, engaging and memorable way by attending Altitude Day last week, a leadership event crafted specifically for Yr 9 students and run by YLead. Students gained advice on how to make good choices, build their confidence and make a difference from three inspiring guest speakers, all whilst forming a strong network of peers from schools across the region. Altitude Day provided an environment where students could step outside the classroom to truly understand what it means to be a leader.

At Altitude Day, students:

  • Identified ways to have a positive impact at their school (with or without a badge)
  • Be challenged to step outside their comfort zone in a number of ways in a safe and supportive environment
  • Identified their current capacities and future opportunities
  • Reflect on the kind of leader they would like to be.

Student reflections from the day…

We learnt from Ben Pettingill that you can’t control what others are going to do, you can only control what you do.
Carolina Pedro Inacio.

From Ylead, we learned that the only limitation is your imagination and it’s important to dream big.
Remie Gibbs.

We learnt key steps to finding our greatest potential through engaging thinking patterns and steps.
Imogen Jeffery-Bilich.

From YLead we learnt that there will be many challenges throughout our life that we can not change but we can always change the way we react and the mindset we have towards it.
Jemima Hugman.

From the various speakers we heard today, we learnt that in any situation, you always have the choice to focus on the negatives or embrace it and make the most of any opportunity.
Ruby Wood.

Resilience and potential. Unlocked. YLead Altitude Day taught us that courage is what builds confidence. We set clear goals, discovered, and acquired a pathway of knowledge regarding our future. Our challenges are what make us stronger, build resilience and boost confidence throughout the curves of life. The recognition of others’ differences is key, and assisting peers, friends and family along the way forms the foundation of leaders in our society.
Krishna Gupta, Liam Petersen and Max Perry.

The YLead Altitude Day for Year 9 was an honour to participate in as it really helped us to unlock our true potential, create meaningful goals and developing strong relationships. It taught me that I could do anything that I put my mind to and that what I perceived as my flaws, could actually be my strengths. Another thing that I learned was that I can’t control others, only myself and that I needed to aspire, acquire and take-action. If we include people, create ideas and actually see them through, it is entirely possible for us to change our world for the better.
Abbie Sewell.

Heritage Week

This week, we have celebrated Redlands Heritage Week which has highlighted different chapters of the School’s rich history, the foundations of the School and our extraordinary culture and community.

Our focus for Heritage Week 2022 has been acknowledging and celebrating Science and Innovation at Redlands and connected to this, our Deputy Principal, Mr Corcoran, led an engaging summary of these aspects in the School’s history in our assembly this week.

Celebrating the School’s 138th birthday, there was also the opportunity to come together as a Junior School and enjoy the opportunity for us to sing Happy Birthday together, view the video here.

In addition, students have been reflecting on Heritage Week in Chapel this week and Ms McKenzie and Ms Michaels have created this delightful video for all to enjoy.

If you have not had done so, I encourage you to take a few moments to read about our history.

CIS Cross Country Carnival

On Wednesday, a number of Redlands students competed for HICES at the Combined Independent Schools of NSW Cross Country Carnival held at Eastern Creek.

We are extremely proud of the large number of students involved who represented both Redlands and HICES in cold and windy conditions as listed below and mentioned in Mr Dunne’s section and in particular, we congratulate one of our Sports Captains, Olivia Law (Yr 6), who came 1st in her race from a field of 130 runners. This is a remarkable achievement and a first for Redlands at Junior School level. Olivia will now compete for the CIS team at the NSW event.

Ken Dalla Pozza, Charlotte Roy, Reina Sabharwal (all Yr 3);
Amelie Cadman, Amelia Svensson (Yr 4);
Charlie Hutchings, Kyler Simpson (Yr 5);

Car Line Arrival at 3.20pm

Again, I ask parents who use the moving car line pick up option on Allister Street to arrive as close to 3.20pm as possible or shortly afterwards. Our staggered pick-up times from K-6 are designed to allow for the smoothest flow of traffic. However, the safety of students is being compromised as some Junior School families are arriving anytime from 2.45pm and then causing both traffic and a safety risk to Prep parents arriving at their designated times.

Junior School Swimming Carnival Reminder

This rearranged event from Term 1 takes place next Wednesday 15 June at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. As per the information sent to families, all students should be at school for a 7.20am roll call in classrooms so that buses can depart promptly at 7.30am.

Monday Public Holiday

A reminder that next Monday is a public holiday for the Queen’s birthday. We look forward to seeing our students back on Tuesday heading into the last fortnight of term.

Semester Two Debating (Yrs 4-6)

Debating Club is open to new and additional students for Semester 2. Current debating students do not need to sign up again.

Why debating? Some of the benefits of debating, which translate into many aspects of a student’s personal and academic life, include:

  • learning how to structure persuasive arguments with evidence
  • improved understanding of the world by developing general knowledge
  • speaking concisely with minimal preparation including rebuttals
  • developing critical thinking skills
  • improving verbal and written confidence

If you would like your child to participate in debating club on Tuesdays between 3.30pm-4.30pm, please fill out this form or contact Mr Watkins for more information.

Happy Birthday Redlands

138 years old is quite an extraordinary birthday to be celebrating and we have certainly celebrated all week in Prep. Our students have been fascinated with the old picture display in Prep reception, these provided us all with conversation springboards when comparing old buildings to new ones and how life would have been very different all those years ago.

On Tuesday, our Kindergarten friends enjoyed listening to the Redlands archivist, Marguerite Gillezeau describe what life as a Redlands student was like all those years. They also dressed up in old uniforms, lots of giggles and fun.

On Thursday morning our Yrs 1 and 2 students walked over to the Senior Campus for a guided tour around key historical sites. Our students were so amazed at how much had changed but also how lucky they are to be part of such a school with such rich history to share.

Our Yr 2 leaders also made sure our student led Assembly was all about birthdays too. Mr Price helped us dance the ‘birthday flab’ dance while Mr Corcoran spoke to everyone about how important this week is to us all.

On behalf of all the staff and students in Prep, we want to thank Ms Gillezeau for spending time with us this week and for helping our learners to make connections to the past through stories and pictures.

Yr 2 Powerhouse Excursion

It has been a long time since our students were able to go outside of school grounds to explore their surroundings so hopping onto a bus and travelling to an excursion was a highlight for our Yr 2 students this week. They are currently exploring, investigating and comparing technologies of the past and present. No better place to see so many examples of this than the Powerhouse. Rich conversations drove the inquiry excursion as did the reoccurring ‘wow’ that we kept on hearing as they discovered different things around each corner. They couldn’t quite believe that phones were once plugged into walls or that the first computers were so big! Again, another way to connect the children’s learning to the past through visuals and stories.

Kindergarten Hydroponics

Last Friday, there was a buzz of excitement coming from the Kindergarten classrooms. There were squeals of excitement as our sleeves got rolled up and we were able to begin investigating hydroponics. This term, Kindergarten have been inquiring into the characteristics, needs and uses of animals and plants. The children were amazed to find that plants could grow without soil. Each child was able to pick their own plant, having a choice between lettuce, parsley, spring onions and flowers. Kindergarten gently cleaned the soil off their plants and planted them in small containers that they had filled with clay beads and coconut husks. These containers were placed in a tub of water. Following the planting, Kindergarten reflected on their learning. It was wonderful to hear the thoughtful developments in their own understanding.

“I learnt that plants could grow in water but that you need to feed the water.”  Peter Ward

“I discovered that plants could grow without soil.”  Chloe Fung

“I thought that plants need soil but then I looked at my plant and learnt that they can grow without it.”  Anniela Liu

What are we grateful for…?

Discussions this week centred mainly around looking at the past and comparing it to the future. Through pictures and stories, our students discovered that life’s simple tasks took a little longer in the past to undertake. At the centre of these comparisons, we need to be teaching and role modelling gratitude. Gratitude toward people who have gone before us for inventing things, changing things for the better and for preserving this history to share with generations to come.

Gratitude is at times a hard thing to teach young children as it can be talked and read about but until it is experienced first-hand, some just don’t quite understand it. Our Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie and the fabulous Julia Michaels have been talking with students this week about being grateful for things in their lives and for the love of God. Watch this beautiful video that they put together that expresses what they are grateful for this week.

Winter Sport

Netball

It was a weekend of mixed results for the netball program over the weekend, with a number of teams securing wins against some very challenging opposition. The Inter A, Inter D, Inter E and Jnr F teams made the trip up the M1 to Central Coast Grammar School, with the Inter teams all coming away with some strong victories, unfortunately the Jnr F team went down in close encounter. At home there was some great matches against Barker College with the 2nds and Jnr C teams coming away with close victories with both teams battling some illness. Our 1st showed great courage against a strong Oakhill 1st team, with a number of players sick for most the week they fought hard for the whole match eventually going down 34-57.

Best of luck to Ava Mills (Yr 9) who will be representing Northern Suburbs Netball Association this weekend at the U15 State Championships, with two years of COVID delays it is great that the girls are final able to represent Norths!

Waterpolo

The Seniors play their last game of the season this Friday evening, with the top 4 teams of each respective competition making it through to the finals. The Boys take on Balgowlah, whilst the Girls play each other. The Inter competition is really starting to heat up, we have a number of very strong players for both the boys and girls, we are really looking forward to the back end of their season.

Football

We are now officially past the halfway point of the ISA Football Season with all of our teams competing in Round 6 over the weekend. It was a fantastic round for both Girls and Boys Football. The 1st Girls had a huge 7-0 win over the Barker 2nd team. Meanwhile the Redlands 2nd Girls had an early start to catch a bus to the Blue Mountains where they were up against the BMGS 1st team. Playing well against some very strong competition the Redlands girls went down 2-1 at the final whistle. The Junior A side continued their fantastic form this season, remaining undefeated with a 4-0 win against St Spyridon and on the field next to them the Junior Blue Girls had a huge 10-0 win. Junior Gold Girls played hard but had a tough game against Oxley College Junior A, finishing with a 4-1 loss.

The 1st Boys Football had a fantastic game against St Spyridon 1st with a tight 1-1 first half. With a strong second half the Redlands boys came away with a 2-1 win, once again showing their extensive pre-season efforts are paying off. The 2nd Boys clearly seemed to be the better team on Saturday but couldn’t get another goal to the back of the net, finishing with a 1-1 draw. The 15A Boys showed some great signs against St Spyridon but just couldn’t hold off the top team in the competition. Redlands 14A Boys had a 4-3 loss against St Patrick’s College and the 14B/13B combined side had a tough game against St Patrick’s but continue to improve each week. The 13A team finished with a 4-1 loss they should continue to be proud of their efforts as they are making progress each week. The 13B Boys had a fantastic 3-1 win in their first win of the season which was great to see.  If you would like to see where your team stands on the ladder you can find these details on the ISA Website.

There will be no games over the June long weekend, and we will recommence in Term 2, Week 8 with Round 7 on Saturday 18th June.

Hockey

Round 6 was an unbelievable round for Redlands Hockey. The 1st Girls were up against Chevalier College who have been promoted to Division 1 after their dominant performance in Division 2 throughout the first half of the season. From prior years Chevalier have been a very strong ISA Hockey school so the 1st Girls knew they would have a tough game. With some fantastic team work and some of the best Hockey the 1st Girls have played to date, they finished the game with a huge 7-4 win and were in great spirits, showing that Redlands can complete among the top Division 1 Hockey schools, sitting in third spot after the first 6 rounds of the season. The 2nd Girls took momentum from the 1st Girls fantastic win and came out strong against Blue Mountains Grammar School. With some great teamwork they entered half time a massive 6 goals up. Finishing the day with another great win for Redlands Hockey, the 2nd Girls also find themselves sitting in third place on the ladder.

A reminder there are no games this Saturday 11 June due to the long weekend. Hockey training will start up again on Tuesday 14 June to prepare for Round 7 on Saturday 18 June.

Please save the date for the End of Season Hockey function which will be held on Thursday 25 August, we look forward to seeing our Hockey players and parents there!

Cross Country & Athletics Training

Tennis

It was a tough competition last weekend for our ISA teams against Oakhill and Barker but Team 5 and 8 were able to take a win! With 4 rounds left, the Internal Competition teams are neck in neck as well! Team Blue are on top of the leader board with Team Green in close second for the 8am session. For the 10am session, Team Orange are first with Lime and Maroon tied for second. We are excited to see who will make the finals over the next few weeks!

A reminder there are no Saturday matches or Development Squad this long weekend! For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong.

Rugby

Redlands Rugby celebrated our first home game on the weekend, playing matches across four Age-Groups against our long-time rival, Chevalier College.

You could see how much our parents, carers and supporters had missed being on the sidelines, with both Gwilliam and Campbell at Macquarie having some wonderful crowds camped around the fields.

Our Under 16s kicked off the day, being tunnelled out by our youngest team the Under 13s. Without a number of their strongest players, it was up to other members in the squad to step up physically. It was fantastic to see players such as Jay Sefton, Will Andrew and Henry Charles take on that higher workload, both defensively and in attack. Daniel Lev was playing his first match at fly half and, supported by the Under 16s Captain, Alfie Leach, he worked the team around the park whilst also being a leader with his defensive efforts. Against a strong and physical side, our Under 16s went down in a tightly contested match. As a group, we identified areas of focus, and can relish the opportunity to face this Chevalier side later in the season.

With a massive tunnel, our 1st XV were led out by our 2022 Redlands Rugby Captain, Hugh Sellar. This was a significant match, not just for Hugh, with our 1st XV having their first opportunity to wear our home 1st XV Jersey, the ‘Navy. The opening fifteen minutes of the 1st XV match was some of the most physical and brutal rugby I have seen in my time at Redlands, with both teams taking it to each other with and without the ball. Chevalier were camped on our line, but a fantastic open field tackle by Will Pearson forced the ball loose, with Sam Chubb capitalising with a brilliant solo run. Minutes later, off a set piece move, James Greer split the defence, scything through and putting on the final pass, try to Jamie Dawson-Damer and to Redlands. The game followed much of the same pattern with both teams trading long minutes of possession. Chevalier were able to put together longer phases of attack, exploiting some tired defence at times. Ultimately, Chevalier were the winners in a tight contest, with both teams exhausted and depleted by the end of it.

Our Under 14s started on fire, with some fantastic combinations in our backline linking up for two quick tries. For this squad, the big takeaway was how, when they have an opposition on the back foot, they cannot let up. Chevalier were able to flip the possession and start to make inroads against a defence that had lost connection. Credit must go to Otto Eden and Digby Scott who tackled themselves into exhaustion. With the long weekend, this will give this group a great opportunity to regroup as a squad and prepare for the back end of the season in Term 3.

Leaving possibly the best till last, our mighty Under 13s. Fresh off their wonderful win against St Augustines the previous week and with the motivation of having the entire 1st XV tunnel them on, the energy within this squad was incredible. Straight from the outset they built pressure on the opposition. With bruising defence and even more physicality in their running game it was fantastic to see each player step up and make the effort for his team. The combination of Austin Durrant, Chase Hindmarsh and Charlie Reeves was again exceptional. Charlie Reeves was our Captain this week, with Freddie Hart away, and he did not miss a beat, leading our team around the park to perfection. They dragged Chevalier into a dog fight, forcing their opposition to try and attack out from their own half, forcing critical mistakes. Redlands was brilliant in turning these mistakes into points, with one length of the field effort coming from a missed pass, picked up and finished off by Austin Durrant. A phenomenal win by Redlands and a well-deserved reward for a group that is continuing to train to the highest level each week.

Could I also please finish off, by highlighting three boys in particular with James Greer, Kane Thompson and Miles Eden. These three boys were trialled and selected into our 1st XV, starting at Outside Centre, Openside Flanker and Lock respectively. I could not be more impressed with their attitude and efforts so far this season and they are so deserving of this opportunity.

With the long weekend off, we can now turn our attention to the Blue Mountains Round. I hope to see as many of you there as possible, with all teams continuing to develop and improve each and every week.

Touch Football

On Thursday, a combined team of Senior Touch Football girls and boys competed in the NSW All Schools Mixed Touch Football Gala day out at Tempe, playing of five total games on the day. Whilst the competition was tough and results didn’t go our way, we managed to enjoy the day and each other’s company, improving our skills in a mixed game environment. Massive thank you to Jordy and Mr Ellis for organising this day for us and thank you to the other coaches, Luke, Chloe, and Tom for supporting us on the day!

T-BALL

We have a number of students in Redlands who are involved in external sports. Georgia Darragh in Year 3 plays Representative TBall for Manly Warringah and on the weekend won the Under 10 State Championships after going undefeated all weekend.

And in another Redlands connection, Lauren Rolfe from Year 6 (was selected to be a Trainee Coach for the team. Pictures of Lauren and Georgia together below. It was pleasing to hear that Lauren gave up an enormous amount of her time to work with the other four coaches to train the girls.

The final picture below is of the girls pre–Grand Final pep talk – which they were lucky to receive from Jade Wall who is an Australian softballer who has represented Australia at the Olympics. Well done Georgia and Lauren.

Drama and Theatre

Last week, a few members of Drama staff attended the NSW Drama Conference. Drama staff from across the state came together to collaborate and share ideas for best teaching practices. The theme of the day was “Renaissance” and this word really encapsulates what students should be experiencing as they integrate themselves back into the classroom. We are shifting back to a time where we can personally share, collaborate and reflect on the past and re-awaken our creative pursuits in a collaborative and expressive environment. As we continue to push through the winter months and work together face-to-face, I look forward to the confidence and skills students will continue to build in the Drama space.

Gala Arts

Students are busily preparing and rehearsing for Gala Arts which will be on Friday 22 July. Submissions for the Gala Arts Photography are still open. All the information is below and can be found on iLearn. Please email drama@redlands.nsw.edu to be added to the page for the submission.

Gala Arts Tickets

Gala Arts tickets will go on sale next week.  A booking link will be available on Drama Pulse and an email will be sent home to competitors families.

Senior Curriculum Performance Images

This week Year 12 IB Theatre students performed the Solo Performance and Report which is 30% of their final grade. The students have explored the theories of Anne Bogart’s Viewpoints and have then applied chosen aspects of the theory to their own solo performances. Below are images from the two nights.

Senior Curriculum Performance Evenings

In the upcoming weeks, we have an array of senior curriculum performance evenings, showcasing their classwork over the semester. We encourage friends and family to attend to support all students involved. Please see the information below for these evenings.

Extra-subject Drama and Theatre

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

A few reminders below:

The Extra Subject Drama and Theatre Program automatically renews at the end of Semester 1. Parents do not need to contact the Drama office unless they wish to change their enrolment. Billing takes place prior to the commencement of Semester 2. Four weeks’ written notice to drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au is required if you wish to withdraw from the program.

Please communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. We have had cases where students are in the car line or their designated pick up spot and have needed to be located before class starts. Please ensure any absences are sent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu or your child’s class tutor prior to the lesson.
